Abstract
Sheehan's syndrome is a rare and under-recognized disorder that may be encountered in a variety of clinical settings. The diagnosis of the condition is challenging due to its rarity and the fact that it is often overlooked in differential diagnoses. In addition, there are no characteristic clinical features or routine laboratory tests that immediately inform the diagnosis. We report the case of a 50-year-old woman diagnosed with an anxiety-depressive state, who had marked and progressive symptoms, which resolved more rapidly following treatment with escitalopram oxalate and recurred after discontinuation of the medication. Further examination revealed abnormalities in hormone levels and pituitary augmentation MRI, based which the patient was finally diagnosed with Sheehan's syndrome. This case emphasizes the rarity of patients with Sheehan's syndrome presenting with anxiety and depression, thereby presenting a diagnostic challenge to clinicians. The objective of this case report is to emphasize the necessity for heightened awareness among healthcare professionals regarding patients with rare clinical presentations and the significance of timely and collaborative treatment strategies.

Abstract
Background Salivary cortisol has garnered increasing attention; the aim of this study was to employ bibliometric analysis to identify key papers in this research field and to explore its current status and trends. Methods Data were sourced from Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science core database, utilizing the search terms 'TS = ('Salivary cortisol') AND (Human) NOT (animal)'. All articles published from January 1, 2004, to September 30, 2024, were included. Results A total of 876 articles were identified. The United States has made a significant contribution to this field, with the highest number of publications at 291. The University of California system leads this research area, having published 40 articles. Professor Clemens Kirschbaum has authored 21 articles in this domain. The journal Psychoneuroendocrinology published the largest number of articles, totaling 99, which accounts for 11.3% of the overall articles. Additionally, Psychoneur-oendocrinology was the most cited journal, with 3,681 citations. High-frequency keywords reveal the developmental status and future trends of human salivary cortisol. As a biomarker and signaling molecule, salivary cortisol is closely linked to human gender, personality, psychology, and physiology. We identified that "mental health," "circadian rhythm," and "assay" may become focal points of interest in the coming years. Conclusion Global publications related to human salivary cortisol were systematically reviewed. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were utilized to analyze their bibliometric characteristics, identify the most cited articles in the field, and determine the leading countries, authors, and institutions, along with the interconnections among them. This analysis aims to elucidate the current status, hotspots, and trends in global research, while providing future development directions for scientific inquiry and medical practitioners.

Abstract
Previous resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) research has identified several brain networks impacted by depression and cortisol, including default mode (DMN), frontoparietal (FPN), and salience networks (SN). In the present study, we examined the effects of cortisol administration on rsFC of these networks in individuals varying in depression history and severity. We collected resting-state fMRI scans and self-reported depression symptom severity for 74 women with and without a history of depression after cortisol and placebo administration using a double-blind, crossover design. We conducted seed-based rsFC analyses for DMN, FPN, and SN seeds to examine rsFC changes after cortisol vs. placebo administration in relation to depression history group and severity. Results revealed a main effect of depression group, with lower left amygdala (SN)-middle temporal gyrus connectivity in women with a history of depression. Cortisol administration increased insula (SN)-inferior frontal gyrus and superior temporal gyrus connectivity. We also found that greater depression severity was associated with increased PCC (DMN)-cerebellum connectivity after cortisol. These results did not survive Bonferroni correction for seed ROIs and should be interpreted with caution. Our findings indicate that acute cortisol elevation may normalize aberrant connectivity of DMN and SN regions, which could help inform clinical treatments for depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subthreshold depression is a highly prevalent mood disorder in young adults. Mind-body exercises, such as Tai Chi, have been adopted as interventions for clinical depressive symptoms. However, the possible effect and underlying mechanism of Tai Chi on subthreshold depression of young individuals remain unclear. This randomized controlled study aimed to evaluate the effects of Tai Chi training and tested the combined stress and reward circuitry model for subthreshold depression. RESULTS A total of 103 participants completed this trial, with 49 in the 12-week 24-style Tai Chi group and 54 participants in control group. Our results showed significantly lower scores on depressive symptoms (P = 0.002) and anxiety symptoms (P = 0.009) and higher scores on quality of life (P = 0.002) after Tai Chi training. There were significant reductions in salivary cortisol levels (P = 0.007) and putamen gray matter volume (P < 0.001) in the Tai Chi group. The changes in cortisol levels and putamen gray matter volume had direct (bootstrapping confidence interval [- 0.91, - 0.11]) and indirect effects (bootstrapping confidence interval [- 0.65, - 0.19]) on the changes induced by Tai Chi training on depressive symptoms, respectively. CONCLUSION The stress-reward complex results indicated an interaction between lowering stress levels and increasing reward circuitry activity associated with the alleviation of depressive symptoms among participants. The 12-week Tai Chi training was effective in improving the symptoms and quality of life of young adults with subthreshold depression. Abstract
Substance use increases throughout adolescence, and earlier substance use may increase risk for poorer health. However, limited research has examined whether stress responses relate to adolescent substance use, especially among adolescents from ethnic minority and high-adversity backgrounds. The present study assessed whether blunted emotional and cortisol responses to stress at age 14 related to substance use by ages 14 and 16, and whether associations varied by poverty status and sex. A sample of 277 Mexican-origin youth (53.19% female; 68.35% below the poverty line) completed a social-evaluative stress task, which was culturally adapted for this population, and provided saliva samples and rated their anger, sadness, and happiness throughout the task. They also reported whether they had ever used alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes, and vaping of nicotine at age 14 and again at age 16. Multilevel models suggested that blunted cortisol reactivity to stress was associated with alcohol use by age 14 and vaping nicotine by age 16 among youth above the poverty line. Also, blunted sadness and happiness reactivity to stress was associated with use of marijuana and alcohol among female adolescents. Blunted stress responses may be a risk factor for substance use among youth above the poverty line and female adolescents.

Abstract
Emotional eating is commonly defined as the tendency to (over)eat in response to emotion. Insofar as it involves the (over)consumption of high-calorie palatable foods, emotional eating is a maladaptive behavior that can lead to eating disorders, and ultimately to metabolic disorders and obesity. Emotional eating is associated with eating disorder subtypes and with abnormalities in emotion processing at a behavioral level. However, not enough is known about the neural pathways involved in both emotion processing and food intake. In this review, we provide an overview of recent neuroimaging studies, highlighting the brain correlates between emotions and eating behavior that may be involved in emotional eating. Interaction between neural and neuro-endocrine pathways (HPA axis) may be involved. In addition to behavioral interventions, there is a need for a holistic approach encompassing both neural and physiological levels to prevent emotional eating. Based on recent imaging, this review indicates that more attention should be paid to prefrontal areas, the insular and orbitofrontal cortices, and reward pathways, in addition to regions that play a major role in both the cognitive control of emotions and eating behavior. Identifying these brain regions could allow for neuromodulation interventions, including neurofeedback training, which deserves further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serious psychological distress (SPD) is common and more prevalent in women, older adults, and individuals with a low-income. Prior studies have highlighted the role of low neighborhood social cohesion (nSC) in potentially contributing to SPD; however, few have investigated this association in a large, nationally representative sample of the United States. Therefore, our objective was to investigate the overall and racial/ethnic-, sex/gender-, self-rated health status-, age-, and household income-specific relationships between nSC and SPD. METHODS We used data from survey years 2013 to 2018 of the National Health Interview Survey to investigate nSC and SPD among Asian, Non-Hispanic (NH)-Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and NH-White men as well as women in the United States (N = 168,573) and to determine modification by race/ethnicity, sex/gender, self-rated health status, age, and annual household income. nSC was measured by asking participants four questions related to the trustworthiness and dependability of their neighbors. nSC scores were trichotomized into low (< 12), medium (12-14), and high (15-16). SPD was measured using the Kessler 6 psychological distress scale with scores ≥ 13 indicating SPD. After adjusting for sociodemographic, health behavior, and clinical confounders, we used Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Among 168,573 participants, most were Non-Hispanic (NH)-White (69%), and mean age was 47 ± 0.01 years. After adjustment, low vs. high nSC was associated with a 75% higher prevalence of SPD overall (PR = 1.75 [1.59-1.92]), 4 times the prevalence of SPD among Asian men (PR = 4.06 [1.57-10.50]), 2 times the prevalence of SPD among participants in at least good health (PR = 2.02 [95% CI: 1.74-2.35]), 92% higher prevalence of SPD among participants ≥ 50 years old (PR = 1.92 [1.70-2.18]), and approximately 3 times the prevalence of SPD among Hispanic/Latinx participants with household incomes ≥ $75,000 (PR = 2.97 [1.45-6.08]). CONCLUSIONS Low nSC was associated with higher SPD in the overall population and the magnitude of the association was higher in Asian men, participants who reported good health, older participants, and Hispanic/Latinx adults with higher household incomes. Future research should continue to examine how neighborhood contexts can affect health across various sociodemographic groups, especially among groups with multiple marginalized social identities.

Abstract
Depression, a common mental illness that seriously affects the psychological health of patients, is also thought to be associated with abnormal brain functional connectivity. This study aimed to explore the differences in the sleep-state functional network topology in depressed patients. A total of 25 healthy participants and 26 depressed patients underwent overnight 16-channel electroencephalography (EEG) examination. The cortical networks were constructed by using functional connectivity metrics of participants based on the weighted phase lag index (WPLI) between the EEG signals. The results indicated that depressed patients exhibited higher global efficiency and node strength than healthy participants. Furthermore, the depressed group indicated right-lateralization in the δ band. The top 30% of connectivity in both groups were shown in undirected connectivity graphs, revealing the distinct link patterns between the depressed and control groups. Links between the hemispheres were noted in the patient group, while the links in the control group were only observed within each hemisphere, and there were many long-range links inside the hemisphere. The altered sleep-state functional network topology in depressed patients may provide clues for a better understanding of the depression pathology. Overall, functional network topology may become a powerful tool for the diagnosis of depression.

Abstract
Cortisol, the end product of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, regulates cognitive function and emotion processing. Cushing's disease, which is characterized by a unique excess of cortisol upon clinical diagnosis, serve as an excellent in vivo “hyperexpression” model to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms of cortisol in the human brain. Previous studies have shown the association between cortisol and functional connectivity within an a priori brain network. However, the whole-brain connectivity pattern that accompanies endogenous cortisol variation is still unclear, as are its associated genetic underpinnings. Here, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in 112 subjects (60 patients with Cushing's disease and 52 healthy subjects), we performed a voxel-level brain-wide association analysis to investigate the functional connectivity pattern associated with a wide variation in cortisol levels at 8 a.m. The results showed that the regions associated with cortisol as of 8 a.m. were primarily distributed in brain functional hubs involved in self-referential processing, such as the medial prefrontal cortex, anterior and posterior cingulate cortex, and caudate. We also found that regions in the middle temporal, inferior parietal and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, which is important for social communication tasks, and in the visual and supplementary motor cortex, which is involved in primary sensorimotor perception, were adversely affected by excessive cortisol. The connectivity between these regions was also significantly correlated with neuropsychiatric profiles, such anxiety and depression. Finally, combined neuroimaging and transcriptome analysis showed that functional cortisol-sensitive brain variations were significantly coupled to regional expression of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors. These findings reveal cortisol-biased functional signatures in the human brain and shed light on the transcriptional regulation constraints on the cortisol-related brain network.

Abstract
Childhood trauma is a risk factor for psychotic and mood disorders that is associated with abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function in response to stress and abnormal social brain function. Here, we aimed to determine whether childhood trauma exposure would differently moderate associations between cortisol reactivity and social brain function, among cases with schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD) and in healthy individuals (HC). Forty cases with SZ, 35 with BD and 34 HCs underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while performing an emotional face-matching task. Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and cortisol reactivity (i.e. the slope indexing the within-subject difference between pre- and post-imaging salivary cortisol levels) was determined. The severity of childhood trauma moderated the relationship between cortisol reactivity and brain activation in the bilateral temporo-parieto-insular junctions, right middle cingulum, right pre/postcentral gyri, left cerebellum and right lingual gyrus, differently depending on the clinical group. When exposed to high levels of trauma, the cortisol slope was negatively associated with activation in these regions in HC, while the cortisol slope was positively associated with activation in these regions in SZ cases. Similarly, there were differences between the groups in how trauma severity moderated the relationship between cortisol reactivity and functional connectivity between the amygdala and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. In addition to reflecting typical associations between cortisol reactivity and emotional brain function when not exposed to childhood trauma, these findings provide new evidence that trauma exposure disrupts these relationships in both healthy individuals and in cases with SZ or BD.

Abstract
Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) often report pain; however, the pain-related brain mechanism that contributes to MDD with pain remains largely unclear. In the current study, we aimed to observe the cortical responses by employing fMRI technique combined with thermal stimulation paradigm in 17 major depressive disorder patients with pain (MDDP), 19 major depressive disorder patients without pain (MDDNP), and 25 age- and gender-matched healthy control (HC) subjects. Participants completed the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 (HAMD-17) and provided pain intensity ratings in response to noxious heat (51 °C) during task-fMRI scanning by visual analogue scale (VAS). In our results, there was no difference in pain intensity ratings during tonic heat stimulation between the HC group and MDDNP group (p > 0.05), while the MDDNP group had significantly higher HAMD scores compared with the HC group (p < 0.001). The MDDNP group had decreased brain activation in the postcentral gyrus (PCG) compared with the HC group, implying abnormal activation of the PCG may associate with the characterized depressive mood of painless MDD (p < 0.05). Additionally, there was no difference in HAMD scores between the MDDP group and MDDNP group (p > 0.05), while the MDDP group had significantly greater pain during tonic heat stimulation compared with the MDDNP group (p < 0.01). The MDDP group showed enhanced activation in the PCG compared with the MDDNP group (p < 0.05), which may relate to the abnormal regulation of pain in painful MDD. Our results suggested that higher PCG activation may play an important role in facilitating the occurrence of pain in depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Youth with bipolar disorder (BD) and offspring of individuals with BD (BD-OFF) are characterized by higher levels of impulsive and overt aggression. The cognitive basis underlying these aggressive behaviors are not clarified in this population. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive alterations and aggressive behavior in youth with BD and BD-OFF. METHODS Forty-two youth with BD, 17 BD-OFF and 57 healthy controls (HCs) were administered the Modified Overt Aggression Scale (MOAS), the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and the Children's Depression Rating Scale (CDRS). Multiple linear regression analyses were performed in the three groups separately. In each group, tests scores from the CANTAB were predictors. MOAS subscale scores and MOAS total scores were dependent variables. Results are corrected for age, IQ and mood state. RESULTS Both youth with BD and BD-OFF showed positive correlations between impairment in executive functions and levels of verbal aggression. In youth with BD, altered processing of either positive and negative stimuli positively correlated with MOAS total scores, whereas in BD-OFF, such relationship was negative. CONCLUSIONS Impulsive aggressive behaviors in youth with BD arise from a combination of altered affective processing and executive dysfunction. The negative relationship between affective processing and aggression in BD-OFF suggested the presence of possible mechanisms of resilience in this population.

Abstract
Childhood trauma (CT) has been repeatedly linked to earlier onset and greater severity of bipolar disorder (BD) in adulthood. However, such knowledge is mostly based on retrospective and cross-sectional studies in adults with BD. The first objective of this selective review is to characterize the short-term effects of CT in the development of BD by focusing on studies in young people. The second objective is to describe the longer-term consequences of CT by considering studies with adult participants. This review first outlines the most prominent hypotheses linking CT exposure and the onset of BD. Then, it summarizes the psychological and biological risk factors implicated in the development of BD, followed by a discussion of original studies that investigated the role of CT in young people with early-onset BD, youths at increased risk of developing BD, or young people with BD with a focus on subclinical and clinical outcome measures. The review considers additional biological and psychological factors associated with a negative impact of CT on the long-term course of BD in later adulthood. Finally, we discuss how the integration of information of CT can improve ongoing early identification of BD and mitigate severe clinical expression in later adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood trauma is an important early social risk factor for the development of the major depressive disorder (MDD). Both childhood trauma and depression are associated with dysfunctional attitudes and dysregulation in stress hormones. We aimed to clarify the path from childhood trauma to depression and identify potential predictors of antidepressant treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVES One hundred and thirty-nine MDD patients and 112 healthy controls were included at baseline. Depressive symptoms were assessed with both self-reported and expert-rated scales. Childhood trauma and dysfunctional attitudes were evaluated and blood cortisol levels were assayed. Patients received an open-label antidepressant trial with paroxetine and their depressive symptoms were monitored by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) during 6 months of treatment. After 6 months, 94 patients received the same assessments as the baseline. RESULTS At baseline, the influence of childhood trauma on depression diagnosis was mediated by dysfunctional attitudes. In patients with MDD, the influence of childhood trauma on depression severity was mediated by both dysfunctional attitudes and cortisol levels. Baseline childhood trauma predicted the antidepressant treatment outcome during early treatment phase and baseline cortisol levels predicted the antidepressant treatment outcome at later treatment phase. After 6-month antidepressant treatment, a significant remission by time effect was found on dysfunctional attitudes and depression severity but not on cortisol levels. CONCLUSION Effect of childhood trauma on depression onset was mediated by dysfunctional attitudes. The relationship between childhood trauma and depressive symptoms was mediated by dysfunctional attitudes and cortisol levels in MDD patients. Baseline childhood trauma and cortisol levels may be moderators for antidepressant treatment response at different treatment phase.

Abstract
The possible effects of stress and neurobiological stress mechanisms on visuospatial abilities remain largely unknown. In the current study, we examined the combined effect of sex hormones and both the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis (HPA-A) and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) on stress-induced changes in visuospatial performance. A total of 107 participants completed a mental rotation task and were subsequently exposed to either to the Trier social stress test (TSST) or to a control condition before completing the mental rotation task again. HPA-A and SNS reactivity of the participants were evaluated by measuring salivary alpha amylase (sAA; an SNS activation marker) and cortisol in four saliva samples. Pre-stress levels of sex hormones (progesterone, estradiol, and testosterone) were also measured. The TSST enhanced mental rotation performance, and this enhancement was negatively correlated with baseline estradiol levels and positively correlated with the level of cortisol reactivity among men. In addition, controlling for baseline levels of testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone diminished this effect of stress. These results imply that the stress-induced facilitation of mental rotation performance is modulated by baseline sex hormones and provide preliminary support to the notion that a complex interaction between sex hormones and neuroendocrine stress mechanisms mediates the influence of stress on visuospatial performance.

Abstract
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common but complex condition that is poorly understood and multifactorial in aetiology. It is a condition that can compromise the mother's care for her infant, which may pose challenges to the formation of the mother-infant bond and the infant's overall development. Past research has looked at abnormalities in the brain circuitry and hormonal profiles of mothers with PPD compared to non-depressed mothers. However, abnormalities in PPD that may specifically affect the mother's care of her infant have not been clearly assessed. Thus, the present review aims to synthesise studies of altered brain and hormonal responses in mothers with PPD in relation to their care of their infant. First, we review maternal brain responses and their relation to PPD symptomatology, focusing on the salience/fear network, reward/attachment network and default mode network. Next, we discuss oxytocin and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hormones in the context of maternal behaviour and PPD. Finally, we synthesise these findings and propose how future studies may benefit from the combined study of both neural and hormonal activity to better understand the underlying neurobiology of maternal care in PPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We have previously demonstrated that pre-scan salivary cortisol is associated with attentuated frontal-subcortical brain activation during emotion processesing and semantic list-learning paradigms in depressed subjects. Additionally, altered functional connectivity is observed after remission of acute depression symptoms (rMDD). It is unknown whether cortisol also predicts altered functional connectivity during remission. METHODS Participants were 47 healthy controls (HC) and 73 rMDD, 18-30 years old who provided salivary cortisol samples before and after undergoing resting-state fMRI. We tested whether salivary cortisol by diagnosis interactions were associated with seed-based resting connectivity of the default mode (DMN) and salience and emotion (SN) networks using whole-brain, cluster-level corrected (p < .01) regression in SPM8. RESULTS Pre-scan cortisol predicted decreased (HC) and increased (rMDD) cross-network connectivity to the dorsal anterior cingulate, dorso-medial and lateral- prefrontal cortex, brain stem and cerebellum (all seeds) and precuneus (DMN seeds). By and large, pre/post-scan cortisol change predicted the same pattern of findings. In network analyses, cortisol predominantly predicted enhanced cross-network connectivity to cognitive control network regions in rMDD. CONCLUSIONS The association of cortisol with connections of default and salience networks to executive brain networks differs between individuals with and without a history of depression. Further investigation is needed to better understand the role of cortisol and related stress hormones as a potential primary and interactive driver of network coherence in depression.

Abstract
Background:
The major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic illness with major manifestations
in cognitive, social and occupational functions. The pathophysiological model is an intrigue
issue for scientists to understand the origin of MDD.
Objective:
In the beginning, the cortico-limbic-striato-pallidal-thalamic model has been proposed to
link the clinical symptoms with the abnormalities in brain structure and function. However, the
model is still evolving due to recent advances in the neuroimaging techniques, especially for functional
magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The recent findings in the fMRI studies in MDD showed
the importance of fronto-limbic model for the modulations between cognitive function and primitive
and negative emotions.
Method:
This review will focus on the literature of fMRI studies in MDD with findings not in the
fronto-limbic structures.
Results:
Additional regions beyond the fronto-limbic model have been observed in some literature of
MDD. Some regions in the parietal, temporal and occipital lobes have been shown with the alterations
in gray matter, white matter and brain function. The importance of sensory detection, visuospatial function,
language reception, motor response and emotional memories in these regions might provide the
clues to understand the cognitive misinterpretations related to altered reception of outside information,
behavioral responses related to biased cognition and emotional memories and clinical symptoms related
to the significant alterations of interactions between different brain regions.
Conclusion:
Future studies to establish a more comprehensive model for MDD will be warranted,
especially for the model beyond the fronto-limbic structures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Decreased volume and disrupted function in neural structures essential for memory formation (e.g. medial temporal lobe and prefrontal cortex) are common among individuals with depression. Hypothalamic-pituitary-axis function, as reflected by measurement of cortisol levels, is linked to neural activity during memory encoding in healthy people. However, it is not as well understood whether cortisol is associated with alterations in fronto-temporal recruitment during memory encoding in depression. METHODS In this pilot study, we evaluated associations between cortisol and neural activation during memory encoding in 62 adults (18-65 years) with mood disorders (MD; n = 39, 66.7% female), including major depression (n = 28) and bipolar I disorder (n = 11), and healthy controls (HC; n = 23, 43.5% female). Participants provided salivary cortisol samples before and after completing a semantically-cued list-learning task during 3-Tesla fMRI. Links between pre-scan cortisol (and cortisol change) and activation during encoding were evaluated using block and event-related models. RESULTS Overall, pre-scan cortisol level was positively associated with greater engagement of fronto-limbic activation during the encoding block. However, in MD, pre-scan cortisol was associated with attenuated activation during encoding in medial frontal, superior and middle temporal gyri, insula, lingual gyrus, and claustrum relative to HCs. Cortisol-related attenuation of activation in MD was also observed during encoding of words subsequently recalled in the ventral anterior cingulate, hypothalamus, and middle temporal gyrus. By and large, cortisol change (pre/post scan) predicted the same pattern of findings in both block and event-related contrasts. LIMITATIONS Although analyses accounted for variations in scanner time of day, circadian alterations in cortisol may have introduced variability into the results. CONCLUSIONS Pre-scan cortisol may selectively interfere with recruitment of important fronto-temporal memory circuitry in mood disorders. The inverted associations between cortisol and neural function in MD relative to HC also elucidate potentially unique pathophysiological markers of mood disorders.

Abstract
Aggression is a common entity in psychiatric disorders, particularly psychotic disorders. Glucocorticoid hypofunction has been linked to abnormal forms of aggressive behavior in various studies in a 'possibly causal' role. We hypothesise that aggression, even among those having psychosis is associated with glucocorticoid alterations similar to those who are aggressive but not psychotic. To our knowledge, this is the first study attempting to look at the cortisol functioning in relation to both aggression and psychosis. The present study included 80 participants divided into four groups depending upon presence or absence of aggression and psychosis. Morning cortisol, afternoon cortisol and their variability were measured using ELISA. The groups were compared on measures of aggression, psychosis, morning cortisol, afternoon cortisol and their variability using standard statistical instruments. The present study found lower levels of morning cortisol, afternoon cortisol and cortisol variability among the aggressive group (vs. non aggressive group) and among the diseased group (vs. non diseased group). The differences were most marked for cortisol variability which was related to both aggression and psychosis independently. There were statistically significant correlation between cortisol variability and aggression, which was retained even after controlling for psychosis. There was no significant correlation of cortisol variability with psychosis severity (after controlling for aggression score) or with age, gender or duration of psychosis. We conclude that aggression, even among patients with psychosis, is an independent entity characterized by lower levels of morning cortisol and cortisol variability. The etio-pathology may lie in some altered neuro-immune parameters executed by cortisol and psychosis as trigger.

Abstract
Translation as a notion and procedure is deeply embodied in medical science and education. Translation includes the possibility to translate data across disciplines to improve diagnosis and treatment procedures. The evidence accumulated using translation serves as a vehicle for reification of medical diagnoses. There are promising, established post hoc correlations between the different types of clinical tools (interviews and inventories) and neuroscience. The various measures represent statistical correlations that must now be integrated into diagnostic standards and procedures but this, as a whole, is a step forward towards a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying psychopathology in general and depression in particular. Here, we focus on functional magnetic resonance imaging studies using a trans-disciplinary approach and attempt to establish bridges between the different fields. We will selectively highlight research areas such as imaging genetics, imaging immunology and multimodal imaging, as related to the diagnosis and management of depression.

Abstract
In psychopathology research, endophenotypes are a subset of biomarkers that indicate genetic vulnerability independent of clinical state. To date, an explicit expectation is that endophenotypes be specific to single disorders. We evaluate this expectation considering recent advances in psychiatric genetics, recognition that transdiagnostic vulnerability traits are often more useful than clinical diagnoses in psychiatric genetics, and appreciation for etiological complexity across genetic, neural, hormonal and environmental levels of analysis. We suggest that the disorder-specificity requirement of endophenotypes be relaxed, that neural functions are preferable to behaviors as starting points in searches for endophenotypes, and that future research should focus on interactive effects of multiple endophenotypes on complex psychiatric disorders, some of which are ‘phenocopies’ with distinct etiologies.
