Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chronic kidney disease (CKD) significantly contributes to the socio-economic burden both in China and worldwide. Previous research has shown that experiencing childhood famine is linked to various chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and proteinuria. However, the long-term effects of early-life famine exposure on adult kidney function remain unclear. This study investigates whether exposure to the Chinese Great Famine (1959-1962) is associated with a decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) later in life. DESIGN AND METHODS China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study is a population-based observational study. We analyzed data from 8,828 participants in the 2011-2012 baseline survey, updated in 2014. Participants were categorized based on their birth year into fetal-exposed (1959-1962), childhood-exposed (1949-1958), adolescence/adult-exposed (1912-1948), and nonexposed (1963-1989) groups. The estimated GFR (eGFR) was calculated using the CKD-EPI-Cr-Cys equation (2021), with CKD defined as an eGFR below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. RESULTS Average eGFR values were 103.0, 96.8, 91.2, and 76.3 mL/min/1.73 m2 for the fetal-exposed, childhood-exposed, adolescence/adult-exposed, and nonexposed groups, respectively. The eGFR in the exposed groups was significantly lower compared to the nonexposed group. Specifically, famine exposure correlated with a lower eGFR (coefficient estimates [CE] -9.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] -9.46, -8.82), with the strongest association observed in the adolescence/adult-exposed group (CE -26.74, 95% CI -27.75, -25.74). Adjusting for variables such as demographics, physical and laboratory tests, complications, and personal habits like smoking and drinking did not qualitatively alter this association (CE -1.38, 95% CI -1.72, -1.04). Further stratification by sex, body mass index, alcohol consumption history, hypertension, diabetes, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression score, and education level showed that the association remained consistent. CONCLUSIONS Exposure to famine during different life stages can have enduring effects on GFR decline in humans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parental work-family conflict (WFC) and parental household income have been linked to negative outcomes for children. So far, no study has associated these two stressors with the hair concentration of cortisol (HCC) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in kindergarteners as a measurement of their objective stress. METHODS AND MEASURES 44 children (40.91% female) with a mean age of 5.16 years and their parents participated in this cross-sectional study. Children's cortisol and DHEA measurements reflected the hormones produced over the past two months. Parents filled out questionnaires concerning their WFC and parenting behavior. RESULTS Higher maternal WFC and a lower parental net household income were negatively associated with the DHEA and positively with HCC/DHEA ratio of their children. No significant associations were found between HCC and any included variables. Paternal WFC had no impact on the stress hormones and negatively affected parenting behavior of both parents. Levels of stress hormones were not correlated with parenting behavior. CONCLUSION The present results indicated a higher stress exposure in children of mothers with a higher WFC and lower net household income. Conceivably, this may have led to an accumulation of allostatic load. Potential influences of demographic variables on the children's hormones are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prolonged stress exposure is associated with alterations in cortisol output. The COVID-19 pandemic represented a stressor for many, including children. However, a high-quality caregiving environment may protect against psychological problems and possibly against elevations in cortisol. We examined adolescents' physiological stress responses to the pandemic and the role of attachment in two longitudinal samples from the Netherlands and the United States (https://aspredicted.org/HHY_8MK). METHODS Cortisol was assessed from hair samples before and during the pandemic, while attachment was self-reported prepandemic. Study 1 included a Dutch sample (N = 158; examined at ages 10 and later at 14 years old), whereas Study 2 included a US sample (N = 153; examined at ages 9-11 and again 2 years later) and an age-matched prepandemic sample (N = 29, 10-13 years old). Repeated-measures analyses of variance examined changes in cortisol from prepandemic to during the pandemic and the effect of attachment in each sample separately. RESULTS After accounting for age, both studies revealed nonsignificant changes in hair cortisol and a nonsignificant effect of attachment. A significant effect of sex emerged in Study 1, with Dutch girls showing a significant cortisol increase during the pandemic, which was not explained by puberty. CONCLUSION These findings suggest differential associations of the pandemic with hair cortisol increases by sex and country.

Abstract
Urban residency is associated with exposure to environmental factors, which can influence health in many ways. Neuroscientific research, as well as Public Health research, aim towards broadening evidence in the field of Urban Health. However, it is unclear whether the association between urban living and mental illnesses is causal rather than explainable by other selective effects. This review seeks to gather information on the current evidence regarding urban living and neurological outcomes to demonstrate how Public Health and Neuroscience could complement each other in the field of Urban Health. A scoping review was conducted in four electronic databases according to the PRISMA-statement guidelines. 25 empirical studies were included. Outcomes such as schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, social and cognitive functioning were scrutinised. Evidence was found for alteration of brain functioning and brain structure. Most studies researching cognitive functioning or cognitive decline displayed possible protective effects of urban living compared to rural living. The different study designs in Public Health and Neuroscience could profit from each other. Although the comparability of studies is limited by the inconsistent assessments of urbanity. Synergies and potentials to combine aspects of Public Health and Neuroscience in the field of Urban Health to improve population health became apparent.

Abstract
This study examined associations between hair, salivary, serum, and urinary cortisol concentration with adiposity-related indicators in children, and explored their potential effects modification by age, sex, cortisol measurement method, and country developmental context. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for studies examining at least one of the four aforementioned cortisol with objectively measured adiposity-related outcomes in children. Meta-analyses of cross-sectional studies revealed that hair cortisol concentration was associated with fat mass index (FMI)-standard deviation score (SDS)/FMI z-score (pooled-β = 0.04, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.08) and BMI/BMI z-score (pooled-β = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.25), and these associations were significant among children aged ≤ 12 years (pooled-β = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.05, 0.26) and >12 years (pooled-β = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.22), children from developed countries (pooled β = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.21) and developing countries (pooled-β = 0.193, 95% CI: 0.188, 0.198), and in studies extracting cortisol via LC-MS/MS (pooled-β = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.29) but not ELISA (pooled-β = 0.08, 95% CI: −0.06, 0.22). Meta-analyses of both cohort and cross-sectional studies revealed non-significant associations of morning salivary cortisol concentration and total daily cortisol output with BMI/BMI z-score. Serum cortisol concentration was not associated with BMI or waist circumference. Meta-analysis of urinary cortisol concentration and adiposity was hindered by insufficient data. These findings further corroborate understanding of chronic stress’ physiological contribution to increased pediatric obesity risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term glucocorticoids (HairGC) measured in scalp hair have been associated with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-hip-ratio (WHR) in several cross-sectional studies. We aimed to investigate the magnitude, strength, and clinical relevance of these relations across all ages. METHODS We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration CRD42020205187) searching for articles relating HairGC to measures of obesity. Main outcomes were bivariate correlation coefficients and unadjusted simple linear regression coefficients relating hair cortisol (HairF) and hair cortisone (HairE) to BMI, WC, and WHR. RESULTS We included k = 146 cohorts (n = 34,342 individuals). HairGC were positively related to all anthropometric measurements. The strongest correlation and largest effect size were seen for HairE-WC: pooled correlation 0.18 (95%CI 0.11-0.24; k = 7; n = 3,158; I2 = 45.7%) and pooled regression coefficient 11.0 cm increase in WC per point increase in 10-log-transformed HairE (pg/mg) on liquid-chromatography-(tandem) mass spectrometry (LC-MS) (95%CI 10.1-11.9 cm; k = 6; n = 3,102). Pooled correlation for HairF-BMI was 0.10 (95%CI 0.08-0.13; k = 122; n = 26,527; I2 = 51.2%) and pooled regression coefficient 0.049 kg/m2 per point increase in 10-log-transformed HairF (pg/mg) on LC-MS (95%CI 0.045-0.054 kg/m2 ; k = 26; n = 11,635). DISCUSSION There is a consistent positive association between HairGC and BMI, WC, and WHR, most prominently and clinically relevant for HairE-WC. These findings overall suggest an altered setpoint of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis with increasing central adiposity.

Abstract
Chronic biological stress may adversely affect adolescents' physical and mental health, but insight in the personal and environmental factors that determine chronic stress is limited. We measured 3-month cumulative hair cortisol concentration (HCC) in 419 adolescents, participating in the Flemish Environment and Health Study. Adolescents' health and lifestyle characteristics, household and neighborhood socio-economic status as well as neighborhood urbanicity were assessed as potential determinants of HCC, using multiple linear regression models. We additionally explored heterogeneity of our results by sex. HCC were significantly higher in boys from densely populated neighborhoods, the association was not significant in girls. Accordingly, boys living outside cities had significantly lower HCC than boys, living in cities. HCC was significantly lower in adolescents with an optimal vitality, a measure of a positive mental health status. In adolescent girls, menarcheal status (pre-/postmenarche) was a significant determinant of HCC. Our findings are the first to suggest that residential urbanicity may have an impact on chronic biological stress in a general population of adolescent boys.

Abstract
Hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) were studied in mother-child dyads of La Romana, Dominican Republic (DR), a low-income city, and of the surrounding bateyes, sugarcane plantation villages with inhabitants frequently of Haitian descent. Populations of low socioeconomic status (SES) experience hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation. Urban communities may be increasingly exposed to stressors such as crime and concentrated poverty whereas rural communities may be devoid of important community resources. As a result, the experience of stress in poverty may differ by place of residence. The goal of this study was to examine differences in HCC among urban and rural-dwelling mother-child dyads in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities surrounding La Romana, DR. Forty-five mother/child dyads were enrolled in La Romana and 45 at several bateyes surrounding La Romana. Mothers were ≥18 years and children were between 7 and 14 years. Mothers self-reported perceived stress and demographic factors. Hair samples were collected from mothers and children, and HCC was assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. General linear models examined associations between socioeconomic factors and HCC, and between maternal and child HCC. HCC were measured in 88 maternal and 87 child samples (N = 175). Mothers living in a batey had higher HCC than those living in La Romana (p = 0.001). HCC was positively associated among maternal-child dyads (p = 0.001). Further, Haitian-born mothers as a population who frequently live in a rural batey experienced higher HCC (p = 0.025) that may partially be explained by discriminatory practices in the DR. This research helps to elucidate the impact of urban and rural environmental settings on HCC.Lay summaryThis study focuses on chronic stress, measured by hair cortisol levels, among a low-income population of Dominican and Haitian mother-child pairs who live in urban and rural settings. We found that Haitian-born mothers, who frequently live in a rural batey, had higher hair cortisol levels than Dominican born mothers. Hair cortisol levels between mothers and their children were positively associated. This study addresses the impact of urban and rural environments on the stress response among socioeconomically disadvantaged persons living in an upper middle income country who bear an excessive burden of psychosocial stress.

Abstract
Much has been learned about the etiology and pathogenesis of schizophrenia since the term was first used by Eugene Bleuler over a century ago to describe one of the most important forms of major mental illness to affect mankind. Both nature and nurture feature prominently in our understanding of the genesis of the overall risk of developing schizophrenia. We now have a firm grasp of the broad structure of the genetic architecture and several key environmental risk factors have been identified and delineated. However, much of the heritability of schizophrenia remains unexplained and the reported environmental risk factors do not explain all the variances not attributable to genetic risk factors. The biggest problem at present is that our understanding of the causal mechanisms involved is still in its infancy. In this review, we describe the extent and limits of our knowledge of the specific genetic/constitutional and non-genetic/environmental factors that contribute to the overall risk of schizophrenia. We suggest novel methods may be required to understand the almost certainly immensely complex multi-level causal mechanisms that contribute to the generation of the schizophrenia phenotype.

Abstract
Elevated salivary cortisol levels have been documented in individuals who engage in self-injurious behavior (SIB), indicating acute physiological stress. Less is known about the chronicity of stress and SIB. We analyzed the relationship between parent ratings of problem behavior and hair cortisol concentrations (an index of chronic adrenocortical activity) in 23 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Parent ratings of problem behavior were not significantly correlated with hair cortisol concentrations. When children were categorized into groups based on the frequency and severity of SIB, participants with the greatest frequency and severity of SIB had higher hair cortisol concentrations compared to children without SIB. Frequent and severe SIB may be associated with altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity in children with ASD.

Abstract
The current body of research lacks a meta-analysis of the relationship between hair cortisol concentration (HCC) and anthropometry in children. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to examine this relationship and explore possible moderators between HCC and body mass index (BMI/BMI z-score). Eleven databases were searched: CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, PsycEXTRA, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, Social Sciences Full Text, Sociological Abstracts and Web of Sciences. Random-effects models and exploratory moderator analyses with mixed-effects models were performed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. The meta-analysis showed small positive correlations between HCC and BMI (r = 0.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.02, 0.14, n = 18, p = .009), BMI z-score (r = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.16, n = 12, p = .003), waist circumference (r = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.17, n = 10, p = .001) and body fat including fat mass index (r = 0.06, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.11, n = 3, p = .005). The relationship between HCC and BMI/BMI z-score was significantly moderated by children's sex. Results from this meta-analysis provide initial objective support for a small positive relationship between HCC and anthropometric factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human scalp hair is a valuable matrix for determining long-term cortisol concentrations, with wide-spread applicability in clinical care as well as research. However, pediatric reference intervals are lacking. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to establish age-adjusted reference intervals for hair cortisol in children and to gain insight into hair growth velocity in children up to 2 years old. METHODS A total of 625 healthy children were enrolled through recruitment in pregnancy, infant-welfare clinics, and school visits. Scalp hair cortisol levels were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Age-adjusted reference intervals were established in children from birth to 18 years old. Hair growth velocity was determined in children 0-2 years of age by measuring hair length at 4- to 10-week intervals. RESULTS Hair cortisol levels were high (162.4 pg/mg, 2.5th-97.5th percentile: 28.8-961) after birth with a sharp fall in the first 3 months of life. This is followed by lower values until age 6 and then by graduated and subtle higher values to adult concentrations are reached at the age of 18 years (3.0 pg/mg, 2.5th-97.5th percentile: 0.53-17.8). Average hair growth velocity measured in mm/month was significantly lower in infants 0-6 months of age compared to children 12-24 months (3.5 versus 9.4, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to provide age-adjusted reference intervals for hair cortisol in children from 0-18 years. Higher hair cortisol concentrations in infants might be explained by the significantly lower hair growth rate in the first year of life. The establishment of pediatric hair cortisol reference ranges broadens the potential applications of this biomarker in pediatric clinical care.
