Assessing the risk spillover effects between the Chinese carbon market and the US-China energy market

Pollution caused by environmental problems has aggravated the problem of resource scarcity, and the destruction of the ecological environment by mankind has shown serious consequences. Countries around the world are actively launching various carbon emission reduction and energy transformation policies to face this predicament. This paper investigates the risk spillover effects of China's carbon trading market with China's energy market and the U.S. energy market from the first quarter of 2018 to the first quarter of 2022. This paper uses the optimal ARMA-GARCH to fit the marginal distribution of each market and selects the optimal Copula function for the calculation of CoVaR to obtain more accurate risk measurement results. The results of this paper are as follows. First, there is a bidirectional risk spillover effect between each market in China and the U.S. At the same time, the risk spillover is time-varying, and the extreme return brings more risk. Second, the overall trend of risk spillover from China's carbon market to the U.S.-China energy market has not increased significantly, but the risk of China's energy market to China's carbon market has increased significantly over time. Third, the risk spillover situation in China's carbon trading market is not smooth. Compared to the energy market, it is also more prone to violent reactions in the face of risks. This paper provides policy recommendations to promote the coordinated development of energy and carbon markets.

Urban resilience under the COVID-19 pandemic: A quantitative assessment framework based on system dynamics

The COVID-19 pandemic, which lasted for three years, has had a great impact on the public health system, society and economy of cities, revealing the insufficiency of urban resilience under large-scale public health events (PHEs). Given that a city is a networked and multidimensional system with complex interactions, it is helpful to improve urban resilience under PHEs based on system thinking. Therefore, this paper proposes a dynamic and systematic urban resilience framework that incorporates four subsystems (governance, infrastructures, socioeconomy and energy-material flows). The composite index, system dynamics and epidemic simulation model are integrated into the framework to show the nonlinear relationships in the urban system and reflect the changing trend of urban resilience under PHEs. Then, urban resilience under different epidemic scenarios and response policy scenarios is calculated and discussed to provide some suggestions for decision-makers when faced with the trade-off between the control of PHEs and the maintenance of city operation. The paper concludes that control policies could be adjusted according to the characteristics of PHEs; strict control policies under a severe epidemic could lead to a significant decrease in urban resilience, while a more flexible control strategy can be adopted under a mild epidemic scenario to ensure the normal operation of urban functions. Moreover, the critical functions and impact factors of each subsystem are identified.

Unintended consequences of COVID-19 public policy responses on renewable energy power: evidence from OECD countries in the EU

Since 2020, governments around the world have implemented many types of public policies in response to the outbreak of COVID-19. These dramatic public policies have substantially changed production and consumption activities, thereby temporarily lowering electricity use and greenhouse gas emissions. This study argues that pandemic-induced public policies have unintentionally slowed the transition to renewable energy use in the EU since the decline in greenhouse gas emissions due to the lockdowns helped countries temporarily reduce their total emissions. We employ a fixed-effect model to investigate the effects of different types of COVID-19 public policy responses on electricity production, consumption, and net imports in 12 OECD countries in the EU, and we mainly focus on the share of electricity production from renewable energy sources. Among several public policy responses, stringent lockdown policies, such as workplace closures, stay-at-home requirements, and restrictions on gathering size, have negative and statistically significant impacts on electricity generation and consumption. Furthermore, countries with stringent lockdown policies are more likely to import electricity from other countries to mitigate the electricity shortages in their domestic markets. Importantly, we find that lockdown events have negative and statistically significant effects on the share of renewables in electricity production while increasing the share of fossil fuels in electricity production. In contrast, economic support policies such as income support, debt relief, and economic stimulus programs help reduce the share of fossil fuels in electricity production and decrease the net import of electricity from other countries. Our results indicate that the public policies implemented in response to the outbreak of COVID-19 have mixed effects on the transition to renewable energy sources in the EU, suggesting that the current decline in greenhouse gas emissions comes from the reduction in electricity use due to lockdown events instead of the adoption of renewable energy use and discouraging the transition to renewable energy sources.

Economic modelling of electricity generation: long short-term memory and Q-rung orthopair fuzzy sets

The main goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of population mobility on electricity generation in Russian cities in the conditions of the spread of COVID-19, and identify hotspots. Furthermore, the evaluation is also conducted using hybrid fuzzy decision-making modelling. In this context, q-ROF DEMATEL and TOPSIS methods are taken into consideration. Additionally, a comparative evaluation is also performed with the help of Intuitionistic and Pythagorean fuzzy sets. The results are quite similar that allows to conclude that the findings are reliable and coherent. The study proves the hypothesis that human behavior changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and electricity consumption is declining in major cities around the world. The biggest fall in energy generation was in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. In St. Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod, the fall in energy generation is no so crucial because these cities have low building density. The study uses Long Short-Term Memory models with many different parameters. The Q-Rung Orthopair Fuzzy Sets model forecasts new COVID-19 using ten parameters. This study identifies factors influencing the spread of COVID-19 based on the theory of "broken windows" and outlines directions in limiting population mobility, which can form the basis of state policy. According to the analysis the air temperature is the variable that most affects this process.

Analysis of Air and Soil Quality around Thermal Power Plants and Coal Mines of Singrauli Region, India

Singrauli region is known as the energy capital of India, as it generates nearly 21 GW of electricity, supplied to various parts of the northern India. Many coal-based Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) using coal from several nearby coal mines, and numerous industries are set up in this region which has made it as one of the highly polluted regions of India. In the present study, detailed temporal analysis and forecast of carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and methane (CH₄) concentrations retrieved from satellite data have been carried out for the periods 2005-2020. Based on the classical multiplicative model and using linear regression, the maximum concentration of CO₂, NO₂, SO₂, and CH₄ in the year 2025 is found to be 422.59 ppm, 29.28 ppm, 0.23 DU, and 1901.35 ppbv, respectively. Detailed analysis shows that carbon dioxide has a 95% correlation with all other trace gases. We have also carried out the geo-accumulation index for the presence of various contaminants in the soil of this region. The geo-accumulation index shows that soil in and around thermal power plants and coal mines is contaminated by heavy metals. The cumulative index shows that soil around Hindalco industries, Bina coal mines, Khadia coal mines, and coal-based TPPs (Anpara and Vindhayachal) are highly polluted and a threat to human population living in the region.

Application of Rhamnolipids as Dispersing Agents for the Fabrication of Composite MnO2-Carbon Nanotube Electrodes for Supercapacitors

The high theoretical capacitance of MnO2 renders it a promising material for the cathodes of asymmetric supercapacitors. The good dispersion of MnO2 and conductive additives in a nanocomposite electrode is a key factor for efficient electrode performance. This article describes, for the first time, the application of rhamnolipids (RL) as efficient natural biosurfactants for the fabrication of nanocomposite MnO2-carbon nanotube electrodes for supercapacitors. RL act as co-dispersants for MnO2 and carbon nanotubes and facilitate their efficient mixing, which allows for advanced capacitive properties at an active mass of 40 mg cm-2 in Na2SO4 electrolytes. The highest capacitance obtained from the cyclic voltammetry data at a scan rate of 2 mV s-1 is 8.10 F cm-2 (202.6 F g-1). The highest capacitance obtained from the galvanostatic charge-discharge data at a current density of 3 mA cm-2 is 8.65 F cm-2 (216.16 F g-1). The obtained capacitances are higher than the capacitances of MnO2-based electrodes of the same active mass reported in the literature. The approach developed in this investigation is simple compared to other techniques used for the fabrication of electrodes with high active mass. It offers advantages of using a biocompatible RL biosurfactant.
