Abstract
A novel type of phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin was prepared by utilizing the liquefaction products liquefied by phenol under acidic conditions and then reacted with formaldehyde under alkaline conditions. The relationship between the liquefaction behavior of cassava starch and the properties of modified PF resin wood adhesive was studied. The effects of the liquid–solid ratio of phenol to cassava starch, sulfuric acid usage, and liquefaction time on the liquefaction residue rate and relative crystallinity of cassava starch were determined. The results showed that the bonding strength of modified PF resin decreased gradually with the decrease of the liquid–solid ratio. It was a great surprise that bonding strength still met the requirement of the national standard of 0.7 MPa when the liquid–solid ratio was 1.0. The detailed contents were analyzed through FT-IR, SEM, and XRD. In terms of the utilization of bio-materials for liquefaction to synthesize wood adhesive, cassava starch may be superior to the others.

Abstract
The cooperativity effects of the H-bonding interactions in HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazacyclooctane)∙∙∙HMX∙∙∙FA (formamide), HMX∙∙∙HMX∙∙∙H2O and HMX∙∙∙HMX∙∙∙HMX complexes involving the chair and chair-chair HMX are investigated by using the ONIOM2 (CAM-B3LYP/6-31++G(d,p):PM3) and ONIOM2 (M06-2X/6-31++G(d,p):PM3) methods. The solvent effect of FA or H2O on the cooperativity effect in HMX∙∙∙HMX∙∙∙HMX are evaluated by the integral equation formalism polarized continuum model. The results show that the cooperativity and anti-cooperativity effects are not notable in all the systems. Although the effect of solvation on the binding energy of ternary system HMX∙∙∙HMX∙∙∙HMX is not large, that on the cooperativity of H-bonds is notable, which leads to the mutually strengthened H-bonding interaction in solution. This is perhaps the reason for the formation of different conformation of HMX in different solvent. Surface electrostatic potential and reduced density gradient are used to reveal the nature of the solvent effect on cooperativity effect in HMX∙∙∙HMX∙∙∙HMX. Abstract
We investigate the molecular structure, vibrational and electronic absorption spectra, and electronic hyperpolarizabilities of trans and cis isomers of 4-hydroxyazobenzene (HOAB) via density functional theory. Results show that the azo dye exhibits a high third-order nonlinear optical response and good optical transparency. Both the basis set and the functional are important influences on the results obtained when calculating the absorption spectrum and NLO response. We also study the effect of the solvent on the electronic absorption spectrum to assess the ability of the functional to reproduce the experimental spectrum in combination with a suitable solvent model. Our calculations show that the SMD model of Truhlar et al. handles the electrostatic and the non-electrostatic effects of hydrogen-bonding solvents on the absorption spectrum better than the traditional polarizable continuum model does. In addition, our results indicate that the dye trans-HOAB exhibits a high second hyperpolarizability and excellent optical transparency. Also, although the second hyperpolarizability of cis-HOAB is much lower than that of trans-HOAB, it is non-negligible when calculating the optical nonlinearity of HOAB under an optical pump. We also examine the effect of frequency dispersion on second harmonic generation. This study provides the basis for further research on the spectroscopic and nonlinear optical properties of novel azo dyes and other π-conjugated compounds.

Abstract
The electronic absorption, excitation and fluorescence properties of two 3-amino-substituted-thieno[2,3-b]pyridine/quinolin-2-yl)(phenyl)methanones; (referred to as compounds 1-2: where 3-amino-4,5,6-trimethyl-thieno[2,3-b]pyridin-2-yl)(phenyl)methanone (1); and 3-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-thieno[2,3-b]quinolin-2-yl)(phenyl)methanone (2)) have been investigated in solvents of various polarity and hydrogen-bonding abilities. Results based on the electronic absorption, excitation and emission study of these compounds; indicated that singlets (S1 and S2) excited-states are populated in non-polar and polar protic/aprotic solvents giving dual fluorescence with weak charge transfer separation. The experimental results were interpreted with the aid of quantum chemistry calculations carried out with the DFT and TD-DFT/B3lyp/6-31 + G(d,p) methods. Based on these calculations, compounds 1-2 exist in two rotamers: anti and syn, separated by ca. 5-6 kcal mol(-1) energy barriers in favor of the anti-conformer. The anti-structure, was shown to be stabilized through existence of intramolecular NH…O hydrogen bond (H-b), which plays a dominant role in affecting the energy of the HOMO-1 molecular orbital. Further, methyl/alkyl substitution in the pyridyl-thiophene ring was shown to involve in σ-π hyper-conjugation and destabilization of the HOMO-1 MO's.

Abstract
We examined solvent effect on the IR and Raman spectra of MK in several solvents of different polarity and proticity, for understanding of intermolecular interactions, focusing on solvent effect in detail. It has been found that change of solvent polarity has an ambiguous influence on solvatochromism of MK. We have observed that not only vibrations of carbonyl group are affected by the solvent polarity, but also mode ν(CN) and ν(CC) in IR and Raman spectra of MK. Experimental investigations have been supported by the quantum-mechanical computations to gain more insight into the solvatochromic behavior of Michler's ketone. Calculations have been carried using Kohn-Sham formulation of Density Functional Theory (DFT) and the Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) was employed to account for solute solvent interactions.

Abstract
The solvatochromic behavior of trimethoprim (TMP) was analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy and DFT methods in neat and binary aqueous solvent mixtures. The effects of solvent dipolarity/polarizability and solvent-solute hydrogen bonding interactions on the absorption maxima were evaluated by means of the linear solvation energy relationship concept of Kamlet and Taft. This analysis indicated that both interactions play an important role in the position of the absorption maxima in neat solvents. The simulated absorption spectra of TMP and TMP:(solvent)n complexes in ACN and H2O using TD-DFT methods were in agreement with the experimental ones. Binary aqueous mixtures containing as co-solvents DMSO, ACN and EtOH were studied. Preferential solvation was detected as a nonideal behavior of the wavenumber curve respective to the analytical mole fraction of co-solvent in all binary systems. TMP molecules were preferentially solvated by the organic solvent over the whole composition range. Index of preferential solvation, as well as the influence of solvent parameters were calculated as a function of solvent composition.
