Abstract
In the present study, the influence of spatial confinement on the bond length as well as dipole moment, polarizability and (hyper)polarizabilities of HeH+ ion was analyzed. The effect of spatial confinement was modelled by cylindrically symmetric harmonic oscillator potential, that can be used to mimic high pressure conditions. Based on the conducted research it was found that the spatial confinement significantly affects the investigated properties. Increasing the confinement strength leads to a substantial decrease of their values. This work may be of particular interest for astrochemistry as HeH+ is believed to be the first compound to form in the Universe.

Abstract
Contemporary design of new organic non-linear optical (NLO) materials relies to a large extent on the understanding of molecular and electronic structure-property relationships revealed during the years by available computational approaches. The progress in theory-hand-in-hand with experiment-has enabled us to identify and analyze various physical aspects affecting the NLO responses, such as the environmental effects, molecular vibrations, frequency dispersion, and system dynamics. Although it is nowadays possible to reliably address these effects separately, the studies analyzing their mutual interplay are still very limited. Here, we employ density functional theory (DFT) methods in combination with an implicit solvent model to examine the solvent effects on the electronic and harmonic as well as anharmonic vibrational contributions to the static first hyperpolarizability of a series of push-pull α,ω-diphenylpolyene oligomers, which were experimentally shown to exhibit notable second-order NLO responses. We demonstrate that the magnitudes of both vibrational and electronic contributions being comparable in the gas phase significantly increase in solvents, and the enhancement can be, in some cases, as large as three- or even four-fold. The electrical and mechanical anharmonic contributions are not negligible but cancel each other out to a large extent. The computed dynamic solute NLO properties of the studied systems are shown to be in a fair agreement with those derived from experimentally measured electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation (EFISHG) signals. Our results substantiate the necessity to consider concomitantly both solvation and vibrational effects in modeling static NLO properties of solvated systems.

Abstract
![]()
The molecular origin
of two- (2PA) and three-photon absorption
(3PA) activity in three experimentally studied chromophores, prototypical
dipolar systems, is investigated. To that end, a generalized few-state
model (GFSM) formula is derived for the 3PA transition strength for
nonhermitian theories and employed at the coupled-cluster level of
theory. Using various computational techniques such as molecular dynamics,
linear and quadratic response theories, and GFSM, an in-depth analysis
of various optical channels involved in 2PA and 3PA processes is presented.
It is found that the four-state model involving the second and third
excited singlet states as intermediates is the smallest model among
all considered few-state approximations that produces 2PA and 3PA
transition strengths (for S0 → S1 transition)
close to the reference results. By analyzing various optical channels
appearing in these models and involved in studied multiphoton processes,
we found that the 2PA and 3PA activities in all the three chromophores
are dominated and hence controlled by the dipole moment of the final
excited state. The similar origins of the 2PA and the 3PA in these
prototypical dipolar chromophores suggest transferability of structure–property
relations from the 2PA to the 3PA domain.

Abstract
Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is commonly used in chemical laboratories to study the geometrical structure of molecules and molecular complexes. The analysis of experimental IR spectra can nowadays be reliably supported by the results of quantum-chemical computations as vibrational frequencies and corresponding vibrational transition intensities are routinely calculated using harmonic approximation by virtually all quantum chemistry packages. In the present study we combine the methodology of computing vibrational spectra using high-level electron correlation treatments with an analytical potential-based approach to take into account spatial confinement effects. Using this approach, we perform a pioneering analysis of the impact of the spatial confinement caused by a cylindrical harmonic oscillator potential on the harmonic vibrational transition intensities and frequencies of two hydrogen-bonded complexes: HCN…HCN and HCN…HNC. The emphasis is put on the largest-intensity bands, which correspond to the stretching vibrations. The obtained results demonstrate that embedding the molecular complexes in an external confining potential causes significant changes of transition intensities and vibrational frequencies.

Abstract
In this theoretical study, we report on the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) of titled molecules confined by repulsive potentials of cylindrical symmetry mimicking a topology. Our calculations show that the spatial restriction significantly changes the picture of the MEP of molecules in a quantitative and qualitative sense. In particular, the drastic changes in the MEP as a function of the strength of spatial confinement are observed for the BrCN molecule. This preliminary study is the first step in the investigation of the behavior of the MEP of molecular systems under orbital compression.

Abstract
The concept of effective one-electron potentials (EOPs) has proven to be extremely useful in efficient description of electronic structure of chemical systems, especially extended molecular aggregates such as interacting molecules in condensed phases. Here, a general method for EOP-based elimination of electron repulsion integrals is presented, that is tuned toward the fragment-based calculation methodologies such as the second generation of the effective fragment potentials (EFP2) method. Two general types of the EOP operator matrix elements are distinguished and treated either via the distributed multipole expansion or the extended density fitting (DF) schemes developed in this work. The EOP technique is then applied to reduce the high computational costs of the effective fragment charge-transfer (CT) terms being the bottleneck of EFP2 potentials. The alternative EOP-based CT energy model is proposed, derived within the framework of intermolecular perturbation theory with Hartree-Fock noninteracting reference wavefunctions, compatible with the original EFP2 formulation. It is found that the computational cost of the EFP2 total interaction energy calculation can be reduced by up to 38 times when using the EOP-based formulation of CT energy, as compared to the original EFP2 scheme, without compromising the accuracy for a wide range of weakly interacting neutral and ionic molecular fragments. The proposed model can thus be used routinely within the EFP2 framework.

Abstract
Excitation energy transfer (EET) is a ubiquitous process in life and materials sciences. Here, a new and computationally efficient method of evaluating the electronic EET couplings between interacting chromophores is introduced that is valid in a wide range of intermolecular distances. The proposed approach is based on the effective elimination of electron repulsion integrals from the excitonic Hamiltonian matrix elements via the density-fitting approach and distributed multipole approximation. The excitonic Hamiltonian represented in a basis including charge transfer (CT) states is re-cast in terms of the effective one-electron potential functions (EOPs) and adapted into the effective fragment parameter (EFP) framework. Calculations for model systems indicate that the speedup of at least three orders of magnitude, as compared to the state-of-the-art methods, can be achieved while maintaining the accuracy of the EET couplings even at short intermolecular distances.

Abstract
An extended set of 37 exchange correlation functionals, representing different DFT approximations, has been evaluated on a difficult playground represented by the dipole moment (μz), polarizability (αzz), first hyperpolarizability (βzzz), and the corresponding interaction-induced electrical properties (Δμz, Δαzz, Δβzzz) of spatially confined hydrogen bonded (HB) dimers. A two-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential was used to exert the effect of spatial restriction. The performance of DFT methods in predicting hydrogen bond lengths in the studied molecular complexes upon confinement has also been examined. The data determined using a high-level CCSD(T) method serve as a reference. The conducted analyses allow us to conclude that methods rooted in DFT constitute a precise tool for the calculation of μz and αzz as well as Δμz and Δαzz, as most of the tested functionals provide results affected by rather small relative errors. On the other hand, an accurate description of the nonlinear optical response of the studied HB systems remains a great challenge for most of the analyzed DFT functionals, both in vacuum and in the presence of an analytical confining potential. Some of the tested DFT methods are found to be prone to catastrophic failure in the prediction of βzzz as well as Δβzzz. The obtained results indicate that there is no great chasm in performance between functionals belonging to different DFT approximations or functionals including different amount of Hartree-Fock exchange when the values of dipole moment and first hyperpolarizability as well as the corresponding interaction-induced electrical properties are considered. However, a higher fraction of Hartree-Fock exchange improves the quality of predictions of αzz and Δαzz. Additionally, it has been shown that only three functionals from the examined set, namely B2PLYP, B3LYP and ωB97X-D, provide highly accurate structural parameters for the investigated systems. Of significant importance is the conclusion that the ωB97X-D functional, representing a modern and highly parametrized range-separated hybrid, demonstrates the most coherent behavior, showing rather small deviations from the reference data in the case of μz, αzz, Δμz and Δαzz as well as the structural parameters of the studied HB dimers. Moreover, our results indicate that the presence of spatial confinement has a rather small effect on the performance of DFT methods.

Abstract
We present a systematic evaluation of the performance of a wide range of exchange-correlation functionals and related dispersion correction schemes for the computation of dipole moments of endohedral complexes, formed through the encapsulation of an AB molecule (AB = LiF, HCl) inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of different diameter. The consistency and accuracy of (i) generalized gradient approximation, (ii) meta GGA, (iii) global hybrid, and (iv) range-separated hybrid density functionals are assessed. In total, 37 density functionals are tested. The results obtained using the highly accurate pair natural orbitals based explicitly correlated local coupled cluster singles doubles (PNO-LCCSD-F12) method of Werner and co-workers [Schwilk et al., J. Chem. Theory Comput., 2017, 13, 3650; Ma et al., J. Chem. Theory Comput., 2017, 13, 4871] with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set serve as a reference. The static electric dipole moment is computed via the finite field response or, when possible, as the expectation value of the dipole operator. Among others, it is shown that functionals belonging to the class of range-separated hybrids, provide results closest to the coupled cluster reference data. In particular, the ωB97X as well as the M11 functional may be considered as a promising choice for computing electric properties of noncovalent endohedral complexes. On the other hand, the worst performance was found for the functionals which do not include the Hartree-Fock exchange. The analysis of both the coupled cluster and the DFT results indicates a strong coupling of dispersion and polarization that may also explain why lower level DFT methods, as well as Hartree-Fock and MP2, cannot yield dipole moments beyond a qualitative agreement with the higher order reference data. Interestingly, the much smaller and less systematically constructed basis sets of Pople of moderate size provide results of accuracy at least comparable with the extended Dunning's aug-cc-pVTZ basis set.

Abstract
The solvatochromism of the dyes was analyzed based on the four-parameter scale including: polarizability (SP), dipolarity (SdP), acidity (SA) and basicity (SB) parameters by method proposed by Catalán. The change of solvent to more polar caused the red shift of absorption and fluorescence band position. The frequency shifts manifest the change in the dipole moment upon excitation. The ground-state dipole moment of the difluoroboranyls was estimated based on changes in molecular polarization with temperature. Moreover, the Stokes shifts were used to calculate the excited state dipole moments of the dyes. For the calculation, the ground-state dipole moments and Onsager cavity radius were also determined theoretically using density functional theory (DFT). The experimentally determined excited-state dipole moments for the compounds are higher than the corresponding ground-state values. The increase in the dipole moment is described in terms of the nature of the excited state.

Abstract
We developed a new methodology for determining charge concentration dependent mobility from organic field-effect transistor (OFET) characteristics, applicable for semiconducting polymers with structural and energy disorder. We show that basic formulae recommended by the "IEEE Standard for Test Methods for the Characterization of Organic Transistors and Materials" for the determination of the field-effect mobility as obtained from the slope ISD1/2vs. VSG (in the saturation regime) or from the transconductance dISD/dVSG (in the linear regime) are not suitable for materials with concentration dependent charge carrier mobility. We propose alternative expressions, which can be directly analytically derived from the drift-diffusion equation with the mobility explicitly dependent on the charge concentration. This methodology for mobility determination was used for analysis of the experimental data obtained for a poly(3-hexylthiophene)-based OFET with the bottom gate-bottom SD electrode configuration.

Abstract
We introduced a molecular-scale description of disordered on-chain charge carrier states into a theoretical model of the charge carrier transport in polymer semiconductors. The presented model combines the quantum mechanical approach with a semi-classical solution of the inter-chain charge hopping. Our model takes into account the significant local anisotropy of the charge carrier mobility present in linear conjugated polymers. Contrary to the models based on the effective medium approximation, our approach allowed avoiding artefacts in the calculated concentration dependence of the mobility originated in its problematic configurational averaging. Monte Carlo numerical calculations show that, depending on the degree of the energetic and structural disorder, the charge carrier mobility increases significantly with increasing charge concentration due to trap filling. At high charge carrier concentrations, the effect of the energetic disorder disappears and the mobility decreases slightly due to the lower density of unoccupied states available for the hopping transport. It could explain the experimentally observed mobility degradation in organic field-effect transistors at high gate voltage.

Abstract
In photobiocatalytical processes involving the simultaneous oxidation of water and reduction of specific organic molecules (e.g., cofactors), the lack of physical separation of the redox half-reactions adversely affects the product stability. This is largely because organic molecules are generally less stable within harsh oxidative environments. In general, surface co-catalysts are able to improve the selectivity of photocatalysts towards water oxidation. However, harsh oxidative environments reduce the chemical stability of the organic molecules. Herein, we show that the use of Co3O4 as a surface co-catalyst on silver orthophosphate improve water photo-oxidation in the presence of organic dye molecules, such as methylene blue, that typically exhibits susceptibility toward photodegradation. The presence of Co3O4 on the photocatalyst surface prevents the adsorption of the organic dye, thus reducing its degradation rate. These findings provide a promising scenario for the visible light-driven reduction of organic molecules using water as an electron donor.

Abstract
We have examined several approaches relying on the Polarizable Embedding (PE) scheme to predict optical band shapes for two chalcone molecules in methanol solution. The PE-TDDFT and PERI-CC2 methods were combined with molecular dynamics simulations, where the solute geometry was kept either as rigid, flexible or partly-flexible (restrained) body. The first approach, termed RBMD-PE-TDDFT, was employed to estimate the inhomogeneous broadening for subsequent convolution with the vibrationally-resolved spectra of the molecule in solution determined quantum-mechanically (QM). As demonstrated, the RBMD-PE-TDDFT/QM-PCM approach delivers accurate band widths, also reproducing their correct asymmetric shapes. Further refinement can be obtained by the estimation of the inhomogeneous broadening using the RBMD-PERI-CC2 method. On the other hand, the remaining two approaches (FBMD-PE-TDDFT and ResBMD-PE-TDDFT), which lack quantum-mechanical treatment of molecular vibrations, lead to underestimated band widths. In this study, we also proposed a simple strategy regarding the rapid selection of the exchange-correlation functional for the simulations of vibrationally-resolved one- and two-photon absorption spectra based on two easy-to-compute metrics.

Abstract
This study focuses on the theoretical description of the influence of spatial confinement on the electronic and vibrational contributions to (hyper)polarizabilities of two dimeric hydrogen bonded systems, namely HCNHCN and HCNHNC. A two-dimensional analytical potential is employed to render the confining environment (e.g. carbon nanotube). Based on the results of the state-of-the-art calculations, performed at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory, we established that: (i) the influence of spatial confinement increases with increasing order of the electrical properties, (ii) the effect of spatial confinement is much larger in the case of the electronic than vibrational contribution (this holds for each order of the electrical properties) and (iii) the decrease in the static nuclear relaxation first hyperpolarizability upon the increase of confinement strength is mainly due to changes in the harmonic term, however, in the case of nuclear relaxation second hyperpolarizability the anharmonic terms contribute more to the drop of this property.

Abstract
The quality of the static electronic dipole (hyper)polarizabilities (α and γ) calculated using the coupled cluster with singles and doubles (CCSD) method and various basis sets for the isolated hydrogen anion (H-) was verified against highly accurate results obtained within the variation-perturbation scheme with the optimized explicitly correlated Gaussian functions. Moreover, the influence of spatial confinement on α and γ of H- was analyzed. The effect of confinement (orbital compression) was modeled by the spherically symmetric harmonic oscillator potential. Our results demonstrate that in order to obtain the value of α with a relative error less than 10% and correct order of magnitude of γ for the unconfined H- at the CCSD level of theory, at least triply augmented correlation consistent basis set (t-aug-cc-pVXZ, X = D,T,Q,5,6) has to be used. Furthermore, it was found that the spatial confinement significantly affects α and γ of H-.

Abstract
Nowadays, much attention is put toward the description of noncovalent complexes exposed to the high pressure or embedded in confining environments. Such conditions may strongly modify the physical and chemical properties of molecular systems. This study focuses on the theoretical description of the confinement induced changes in geometry and energetic parameters of the halogen bonded FCl⋯CNF complex. A model analytical potential is applied to render the effect of orbital compression. In order to analyze the nature of halogen bond interaction, in the presence of spatial confinement, the supermolecular approach together with the symmetry-adapted perturbation theory is used. Furthermore, a thorough analysis of topological parameters, characterizing the halogen bond upon orbital compression, is performed within the quantum theory of atoms in molecules. The calculations are carried out using the ωB97x and CCSD(T) methods in connection with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set. Among others, the obtained results indicate that the spatial confinement not only modifies the nature of halogen bond interaction but also induces the appearance of a completely new form of the studied FCl⋯CNF system.

Abstract
In the present contribution we study the influence of spatial restriction on the two-photon dipole transitions between the X1Σ+ and A1Σ+ states of lithium hydride. The bond-length dependence of the two-photon absorption strength is also analyzed for the first time in the literature. The highly accurate multiconfiguration self-consistent field (MCSCF) method and response theory are used to characterize the electronic structure of the studied molecule. In order to render the effect of orbital compression we apply a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential, mimicking the topology of cylindrical confining environments (e.g. carbon nanotubes, quantum wires). Among others, the obtained results provide evidence that at large internuclear distances the TPA response of lithium hydride may be significantly enhanced and this effect is much more pronounced upon embedding of the LiH molecule in an external confining potential. To understand the origin of the observed variation in the two-photon absorption response a two-level approximation is employed.

Abstract
In this work, we examine, by means of computational methods, the mechanism of Zn(2+) sensing by a bipyridine-centered, D-π-A-π-D-type ratiometric molecular probe. According to recently published experimental data [Divya, K. P.; Sreejith, S.; Ashokkumar, P.; Yuzhan, K.; Peng, Q.; Maji, S. K.; Tong, Y.; Yu, H.; Zhao, Y.; Ramamurthy, P.; Ajayaghosh, A. A ratiometric fluorescent molecular probe with enhanced two-photon response upon Zn(2+) binding for in vitro and in vivo bioimaging. Chem. Sci. 2014, 5, 3469-3474], after coordination to zinc ions the probe exhibits a large enhancement of the two-photon absorption cross section. The goal of our investigation was to elucidate the mechanism behind this phenomenon. For this purpose, linear and nonlinear optical properties of the unbound (cation-free) and bound probe were calculated, including the influence of solute-solvent interactions, implicitly using a polarizable continuum model and explicitely employing the QM/MM approach. Because the results of the calculations indicate that many conformers of the probe are energetically accessible at room temperature in solution and hence contribute to the signal, structure-property relationships were also taken into account. Results of our simulations demonstrate that the one-photon absorption bands for both the unbound and bound forms correspond to the bright π → π* transition to the first excited state, which, on the other hand, exhibits negligible two-photon activity. On the basis of the results of the quadratic response calculations, we put forward a notion that it is the second excited state that gives the strong signal in the experimental nonlinear spectrum. To explain the differences in the two-photon absorption activity for the two lowest-lying excited states and nonlinear response enhancement upon binding, we employed the generalized few-state model including the ground, first, and second excited states. The analysis of the optical channel suggests that the large two-photon response is due to the coordination-induced increase of the transition moment from the first to the second excited state.

Abstract
In this theoretical work we analyze the noncovalent interactions of molecular complexes formed between the hydrogen bonded HF dimer and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of different diameters. In particular, the interaction energies of: (i) spatially confined hydrogen fluoride molecules and (ii) HF dimer and the exterior or interior of SWCNTs are investigated. The computations are carried out in a supermolecular manner using the M06-2X exchange-correlation functional. In order to establish the influence of mutual orientation of the hydrogen fluoride dimer and molecular carbon cages on the analyzed energetic parameters energy scans are performed. Furthermore, changes in the charge distribution of the investigated endo- and exohedral complexes are studied employing the Natural Bond Orbital analysis. Among others, the position of the HF dimer with respect to the carbon cages proves to have a significant influence on the analyzed quantities. The results of our study also indicate that the HF dimer interacts stronger with the interior rather than the exterior of SWCNTs. Moreover, a substantial enhancement of the basis set superposition error is disclosed.

Abstract
We establish the relationships between the metric of charge transfer excitation (Δr) for the bright ππ* state and the two-photon absorption probability as well as the first hyperpolarizability for two families of push-pull π-conjugated systems. As previously demonstrated by Guido et al. (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2013, 9, 3118-3126), Δr is a measure for the average hole-electron distance upon excitation and can be used to discriminate between short- and long-range electronic excitations. We indicate two new benefits from using this metric for the analyses of nonlinear optical properties of push-pull systems. First, the two-photon absorption probability and the first hyperpolarizability are found to be interrelated through Δr; if β ∼ (Δr)(k), then roughly, δ(TPA) ∼ (Δr)(k+1). Second, a simple power relation between Δr and the molecular hyperpolarizabilities of push-pull systems offers the possibility of estimating properties for longer molecular chains without performing calculations of high-order response functions explicitly. We further demonstrate how to link the hyperpolarizabilities with the chain length of the push-pull π-conjugated systems through the metric of charge transfer.

Abstract
We report on the nonlinear optical properties measurements and quantum-chemical calculations of a well-known photochromic system consisting of spiropyran and the merocyanine photoproduct. The study of nonlinear absorption and refraction properties of the molecules dissolved in chloroform were performed with the Z-scan technique, using femtosecond pulses in a wide range of wavelengths. Maxima in the two-photon absorption spectrum at 700 and 1050 nm were found for the merocyanine form, and the corresponding two-photon absorption cross section is 80 GM and 20 GM, respectively. The latter feature does not vanish completely in the nonlinear spectrum of the spiropyran form, possibly because of the existence of some photoconversion caused by the laser beam during the measurements. A nonlinear absorption peak at 900 nm is found in the spiropyran form with an effective cross section of about 20 GM; it is likely due to three-photon absorption or to absorption by some intermediate species. The experimental data are supported by calculations performed with the use of a hybrid quantum mechanics-molecular mechanics approach.

Abstract
We examined solvent effect on the IR and Raman spectra of MK in several solvents of different polarity and proticity, for understanding of intermolecular interactions, focusing on solvent effect in detail. It has been found that change of solvent polarity has an ambiguous influence on solvatochromism of MK. We have observed that not only vibrations of carbonyl group are affected by the solvent polarity, but also mode ν(CN) and ν(CC) in IR and Raman spectra of MK. Experimental investigations have been supported by the quantum-mechanical computations to gain more insight into the solvatochromic behavior of Michler's ketone. Calculations have been carried using Kohn-Sham formulation of Density Functional Theory (DFT) and the Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) was employed to account for solute solvent interactions.

Abstract
This article reports on a comprehensive study of the two-photon absorption (2PA) properties of six novel push-pull octupolar triarylamine compounds as a function of the nature of the electron-withdrawing groups. These compounds present an octupolar structure consisting of a triarylamine core bearing two 3,3′-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl arms and a third group with varying electron-withdrawing strength (H < CN < CHO < NO2 < Cyet < Vin). The 2PA cross-sections, measured by using the femtosecond open-aperture Z-scan technique, showed significant enhancement from 45 up to 125 GM for the lowest energy band and from 95 up to 270 GM for the highest energy band. The results were elucidated based on the large changes in the transition and permanent dipole moments and in terms of (i) EWG strength, (ii) degree of donor-acceptor charge transfer and (iii) electronic coupling between the arms. The 2PA results were eventually supported and confronted with theoretical DFT calculations of the two-photon transition oscillator strengths.

Abstract
A set of exchange-correlation functionals, including BLYP, PBE0, B3LYP, BHandHLYP, CAM-B3LYP, LC-BLYP, and HSE, has been used to determine static and dynamic nonresonant (nuclear relaxation) vibrational (hyper)polarizabilities for a series of all-trans polymethineimine (PMI) oligomers containing up to eight monomer units. These functionals are assessed against reference values obtained using the Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory (MP2) and CCSD methods. For the smallest oligomer, CCSD(T) calculations confirm the choice of MP2 and CCSD as appropriate for assessing the density functionals. By and large, CAM-B3LYP is the most successful, because it is best for the nuclear relaxation contribution to the static linear polarizability, intensity-dependent refractive index second hyperpolarizability, static second hyperpolarizability, and is close to the best for the electro-optical Pockels effect first hyperpolarizability. However, none of the functionals perform satisfactorily for all the vibrational (hyper)polarizabilities studied. In fact, in the case of electric field-induced second harmonic generation all of them, as well as the Hartree-Fock approximation, yield the wrong sign. We have also found that the Pople 6-31+G(d) basis set is unreliable for computing nuclear relaxation (hyper)polarizabilities of PMI oligomers due to the spurious prediction of a nonplanar equilibrium geometry.

Abstract
In this Letter, we explored the use of polarized two-photon absorption (2PA) spectroscopy, which brings additional information when compared to methods that do not use polarization control, to investigate the electronic and molecular structure of two chromophores (FD43 and FD48) based on phenylacetylene moieties. The results were analyzed using quantum chemical calculations of the two-photon transition strengths for circularly and linearly polarized light, provided by the response function formalism. On the basis of these data, it was possible to distinguish and identify the excited electronic states responsible for the lowest-energy 2PA-allowed band in both chromophores. By modeling the 2PA circular-linear dichroism, within the sum-over-essential states approach, we obtained the relative orientation between the dipole moments that are associated with the molecular structure of the chromophores in solution. This result allowed to correlate the V-shape structure of the FD48 chromophore and the quantum-interference-modulated 2PA strength.

Abstract
Static longitudinal electric dipole (hyper)polarizabilities are calculated for six medium-sized π-conjugated organic molecules using recently developed LPol-n basis set family to assess their performance. Dunning's correlation-consistent basis sets of triple-ζ quality combined with MP2 method and supported by CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ results are used to obtain the reference values of analyzed properties. The same reference is used to analyze (hyper)polarizabilities predicted by selected exchange-correlation functionals, particularly those asymptotically corrected.
