Use of vibrational spectroscopy to study 2-[4-(N-dodecanoylamino)phenyl]-5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole: a combined theoretical and experimental approach

Synthesis of 4-(4-ethyl-phenyl)-3-(4-methyl-phenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5(4H)-one and 4-(4-ethyl-phenyl)-3-(4-methyl-phenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole-5(4H)-thione and solvent effects on their infrared spectra in organic solvents

In the present study novel 4-(4-ethyl-phenyl)-3-(4-methyl-phenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5(4H)-one (compound (4)) and 4-(4-ethyl-phenyl)-3-(4-methyl-phenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole-5(4H)-thione (compound (5)) were synthesized. These oxadiazole ring derivatives were characterized by IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and HRMS analyses. The solvent effects on CO, CN and CS stretching vibrational frequencies (ν(CO), ν(CN) and ν(CS)) of synthesized compounds were investigated experimentally using attenuated total reflection (ATR) infrared spectroscopy and compared with the theoretical results assigned using the potential energy distribution (PED) contributions. Furthermore, the ν(CO), ν(CN) and ν(CS) of compound (4) and compound (5) were correlated with empirical solvent parameters such as the solvent acceptor numbers, the Swain equation, the Kirkwood-Bauer-Magat equation, and the linear solvation energy relationships. Apart from the linear effects investigated in similar studies, solvent-induced vibrational shifts were investigated using the quadratic equation. The prediction capabilities of empirical solvent parameters were statistically compared. It was found that the linear solvation energy relationships show better correlation than the other empirical solvent parameters. Additionally, the quadratic equation provided more accurate predictions for the vibrational frequency locations than the Swain and the linear solvation energy relationships equations.

Molecular characteristics of a fluorescent chemosensor for the recognition of ferric ion based on photoresponsive azobenzene derivative

Metal ion recognition is of great significance in biological and environmental detection. So far, there is very few research related to the ferric ion sensing based on photoresponsive azobenzene derivatives. In this work, we report a highly selective fluorescent "turn-off" sensor for Fe³⁺ ions and the molecular sensing characteristics based on an azobenzene derivative, N-(3,4,5-octanoxyphenyl)-N'-4-[(4-hydroxyphenyl)azophenyl]1,3,4-oxadiazole (AOB-t8). The binding association constant was determined to be 6.07×10³M^-1 in ethanol and the stoichiometry ratio of 2:2 was obtained from Job's plot and MS spectra. The AOB-t8 might be likely to form the dimer structure through the chelation of ferric ion with the azobenzene moiety. Meanwhile, it was found that the photoisomerization property of AOB-t8 was regulated by the binding with Fe³⁺. With the chelation of Fe³⁺, the regulated molecular rigidity and the perturbed of electronic state and molecular geometry was suggested to be responsible for the accelerated isomerization of AOB-t8 to UV irradiation and the increased fluorescence lifetime of both trans- and cis-AOB-t8-Fe(III). Moreover, the reversible sensing of AOB-t8 was successfully observed by releasing the iron ion from AOB-t8-Fe(III) with the addition of citric acid.

Spectroscopic investigation (FT-IR, FT-Raman), HOMO-LUMO, NBO analysis and molecular docking study of 2-[(4-chlorobenzyl)sulfanyl]-4-(2-methylpropyl)-6-[3-trifluoromethyl)-anilino]pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile, a potential chemotherapeutic agent

FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of 2-[(4-chlorobenzyl)sulfanyl]-4-(2-methylpropyl)-6-[3-trifluoromethyl)-anilino]pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile were recorded and analyzed. The vibrational wave numbers were computed using DFT quantum chemical calculations. The data obtained from wave number calculations are used to assign vibrational bands obtained in infrared and Raman spectra. Potential energy distribution was done using GAR2PED program. The NH stretching wave number is red shifted by 102 cm(-1) in IR from the computed wave number, which indicates the weakening of the NH bond. The geometrical parameters (DFT) of the title compound are in agreement with the XRD results. NBO analysis, HOMO-LUMO, first hyperpolarizability and molecular electrostatic potential results are also reported. From the MEP map it is evident that the negative electrostatic potential regions are mainly localized over the CN and CF3 groups and are possible sites for electrophilic attack and positive regions are localized around NH group, indicating possible sites for nucleophilic attack. The preliminary docking results suggest that the title compound might exhibit inhibitory activity against GPb and may act as a potential anti-diabetic compound.

Molecular structure and vibrational spectra of 2-Ethoxymethyl-6-ethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1,2,4-triazine-3,5-dione, a potential chemotherapeutic agent, by density functional methods

In this work, the vibrational spectral analysis was carried out using FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy for 2-Ethoxymethyl-6-ethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1,2,4-triazine-3,5-dione, which is a potential chemotherapeutic agent derivative. Theoretical calculations were performed by density functional methods. The complete vibrational assignments of the wavenumbers were made on the basis of potential energy distribution. The results of the calculations were applied to simulated spectra of the title compound, which show excellent agreement with the observed spectra. The frontier orbital energy gap and related properties of the molecule illustrates the high reactivity of the title compound. The first order hyperpolarizability, dipole moment and polarizability are also calculated. Stability of the molecule arising from hyper-conjugative interactions and charge delocalization has been analyzed using natural bond orbital analysis. Molecular electrostatic potential map is also constructed. The calculated geometrical parameters are in agreement with the XRD results.

Theoretical investigations on the molecular structure, vibrational spectra, HOMO-LUMO analyses and NBO study of 1-[(Cyclopropylmethoxy)methyl]-5-ethyl-6-(4-methylbenzyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine-2,4-dione

The FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of 1-[(Cyclopropylmethoxy)methyl]-5-ethyl-6-(4-methylbenzyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine-2,4-dione were recorded. In this work, experimental and theoretical study on the molecular structure and vibrational wavenumbers of the title compound are presented. The vibrational wavenumbers were obtained theoretically at the DFT level and were compared with the experimental results. The study is extended to calculate the HOMO-LUMO energy gap, NBO, mapped molecular electrostatic potential and first hyperpolarizability. The calculated first hyperpolarizability of the title compound is 9.15 times that of urea and hence the title compound and the series of compounds it represents are attractive candidates for further studies in non linear optical applications. In the title compound, the HOMO of π nature is delocalized over the phenyl ring while the LUMO is located over the pyrimidine ring. The inter-molecular hydrogen bonding at O7 and N1H25 positions in each monomer give rise to a C2-symmetry dimer which is predicted to be about 10kcalmol(-1) more stable than the monomeric form.

Molecular structure (monomeric and dimeric) and hydrogen bonds in 5-benzyl 2-thiohydantoin studied by FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations

In the present work the structural and spectral characteristics of 5-benzyl-2-thiohydantoin (5-BTH) have been studied by methods of infrared, Raman spectroscopy and quantum chemistry. Electrostatic potential surface, optimized geometry, harmonic vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities and activities of Raman scattering were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) employing B3LYP with complete relaxation in the potential energy surface using 6-311G++(d,p) basis set. Our results support the hydrogen bonding pattern proposed by reported crystalline structure. Stability of the molecule arising from hyperconjugative interactions, charge delocalization have been analyzed using natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts of the molecule are calculated by the gauge independent atomic orbital (GIAO) method and compared with experimental results. UV-vis spectrum of the compound was recorded in methanol solvent. The TD-DFT calculations have been performed to explore the influence of electronic absorption spectra in the gas phase, as well as in solution environment using PCM and 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. In addition, the thermodynamic properties of the compound were calculated at different temperatures and corresponding relations between the properties and temperature were also studied.

Experimental and theoretical (FT-IR, FT-Raman, UV-vis, NMR) spectroscopic analysis and first order hyperpolarizability studies of non-linear optical material: (2E)-3-[4-(methylsulfanyl) phenyl]-1-(4-nitrophenyl) prop-2-en-1-one using density functional theory

A combined experimental and theoretical investigation on FT-IR, FT-Raman, NMR, UV-vis spectra of a chalcone derivative (2E)-3-[4-(methylsulfanyl) phenyl]-1-(4-nitrophenyl) prop-2-en-1-one (4N4MSP) has been reported. 4N4MSP has two planar rings connected through conjugated double bond and it provides a necessary configuration to show non-linear optical (NLO) response. The molecular structure, fundamental vibrational frequencies and intensity of the vibrational bands are interpreted with the aid of structure optimizations and normal coordinate force field calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) with B3LYP functional and 6-311++G(d,p) basis set combination. The analysis of the fundamental modes was made with the help of potential energy distribution (PED). Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface was plotted over the geometry primarily for predicting sites and relative reactivities towards electrophilic and nucleophilic attack. The delocalization of electron density of various constituents of the molecule has been discussed with the aid of NBO analysis. The electronic properties, such as excitation energies, oscillator strength, wavelengths, HOMO and LUMO energies, were calculated by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and the results complement the experimental findings. The recorded and calculated 1H chemical shifts in gas phase and MeOD solution are gathered for reliable calculations of magnetic properties. Thermodynamic properties like heat capacity (C°p,m), entropy (S°m), enthalpy (H°m) have been calculated for the molecule at the different temperatures. Based on the finite-field approach, the non-linear optical (NLO) parameters such as dipole moment, mean polarizability, anisotropy of polarizability and first order hyperpolarizability of 4N4MSP molecule are calculated. The predicted first hyperpolarizability shows that the molecule has a reasonably good nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior.

Vibrational spectroscopic studies (FT-IR, FT-Raman) and quantum chemical calculations on 5-(Adamantan-1-yl)-3-[(4-fluoroanilino)methyl]-2,3-dihydro-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione, a potential chemotherapeutic agent

The optimized molecular structure, vibrational frequencies, corresponding vibrational assignments of 5-(Adamantan-1-yl)-3-[(4-fluoroanilino)methyl]-2,3-dihydro-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione are investigated experimentally and theoretically using Gaussian09 software package. Potential energy distribution of normal modes vibrations was done using GAR2PED program. The HOMO and LUMO analysis are used to determine the charge transfer within the molecule. The stability of the molecule arising from hyper-conjugative interaction and charge delocalization has been analyzed using NBO analysis. The calculated geometrical parameters are in agreement with the XRD data. The calculated first hyperpolarizability is high and the title compound is an attractive candidate for further studies in non-linear optical applications. To estimate the chemical reactivity of the molecule, the molecular electrostatic potential is calculated for the optimized geometry of the molecule.

Quantum chemical study on influence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding on the geometry, the atomic charges and the vibrational dynamics of 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile

FT-IR (4000-400 cm(-1)) and FT-Raman (4000-200 cm(-1)) spectral measurements on solid 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (2,6-DCBN) have been done. The molecular geometry, harmonic vibrational frequencies and bonding features in the ground state have been calculated by density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311++G (d,p) level. A comparison between the calculated and the experimental results covering the molecular structure has been made. The assignments of the fundamental vibrational modes have been done on the basis of the potential energy distribution (PED). To investigate the influence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding on the geometry, the charge distribution and the vibrational spectrum of 2,6-DCBN; calculations have been done for the monomer as well as the tetramer. The intermolecular interaction energies corrected for basis set superposition error (BSSE) have been calculated using counterpoise method. Based on these results, the correlations between the vibrational modes and the structure of the tetramer have been discussed. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) contour map has been plotted in order to predict how different geometries could interact. The Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis has been done for the chemical interpretation of hyperconjugative interactions and electron density transfer between occupied (bonding or lone pair) orbitals to unoccupied (antibonding or Rydberg) orbitals. UV spectrum was measured in methanol solution. The energies and oscillator strengths were calculated by Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) and matched to the experimental findings. TD-DFT method has also been used for theoretically studying the hydrogen bonding dynamics by monitoring the spectral shifts of some characteristic vibrational modes involved in the formation of hydrogen bonds in the ground and the first excited state. The (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts of the molecule were calculated by the Gauge independent atomic orbital (GIAO) method and compared with experimental results. Standard thermodynamic functions have been obtained and changes in thermodynamic properties on going from monomer to tetramer have been presented.
