BACKGROUND

Increasing attention has been paid to sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) detection because it could cause damage to human body and environmental water. For example, SDBS must not be detected on tableware surface according to national standard of China (GB 14934-2016). However, there is no report heretofore addressing SDBS sensing on surfaces. More importantly, the interferents often affect the sensing performance of analytical approaches. Hence, there is an urgent need to establish a method with good anti-interference ability for SDBS detection both on tableware surfaces and in water.

RESULTS

Inspired by a finding that SDBS could cause the generation of white turbidity in (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS, an aminosilane) aqueous solution, APTMS modified Mn doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and fluorescent (FL) whitening agent (FWA) were constructed as a ratiometric probe for FL and visual sensing of SDBS. The modified QDs aggregated and settled in presence of SDBS, which was likely to be connected to the stimulatory effect of SDBS on the APTMS self-condensation and the electrostatic attraction. The FL emission from the QDs at 605 nm then decreased dramatically, whereas that at 425 nm was virtually constant owing to FWA. SDBS sensing could be achieved by calculating the ratio change of their FL intensities. The detection limits of FL and visual methods were found to be 0.011 and 10 μg/L, respectively, making it one of the most sensitive approaches in literature. Finally, it was successfully utilized for SDBS detection on tableware surfaces and in water.

SIGNIFICANCE

Herein, the specific interaction between SDBS and APTMS was reported and the reaction mechanisms were explored for the first time. The proposed probe based on the effect described above provided a promising potential for SDBS analysis owing to high sensitivity, selectivity, anti-interference ability, and stability (in 20 days).

A facile synthesis of multifunctional carbon dots as fluorescence 'turn on' and 'turn off' probes for selective detection of Al3+ and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol

Carbon dots (CDs) have drawn increasing interests due to their unique optical properties and promising application in various fields. In this study, citric acid (CA) and 5-chloromethyl-8-hydroxyquinoline (LQ) were used to synthesize nitrogen-doped CDs as novel fluorescent probes using a one-step solvothermal route. The as-prepared CDs had strong blue-white fluorescence emission when excited at 405 nm wavelength with a quantum yield (QY) of 25%, behaving with high ion concentration stability. Water-soluble CDs with a 8-hydroxyquinoline structure on their surface could be used to detect Al³⁺ using a 'turn on' mechanism and trinitrophenol (TNP) using a 'turn off' mechanism with detection limits of 229 nM and 44.4 nM, respectively. Al³⁺ enhances the fluorescence of CDs by forming a coordination complex to generate a fluorescence synergistic role and limit CD nonradiative transition. TNP quenched the fluorescence with high selectivity and sensitivity, which was attributed to the inner filter effect and static quenching. These results indicated that these CDs with their unique 'turn on' and 'turn off' nature have potential application in the environmental protection field and in prevention of terrorist threats.

Carbon quantum dots as a fluorophore for “inner filter effect” detection of metronidazole in pharmaceutical preparations

With houttuynia cordata as carbon source, photoluminescent carbon quantum dots (CDs) were obtained via a one-step hydrothermal procedure. The absorption band of metronidazole (MNZ, maximum absorption wavelength at 319 nm) can well overlap with the excitation bands of CDs (maximum excitation wavelength at 320 nm). A fluorescent approach has been developed for detection of MNZ based on the inner filter effect (IFE), in which as-prepared CDs act as an IFE fluorophore and the MNZ as an IFE absorber. We have investigated the mechanism of quenching the fluorescence of CDs and found that the IFE leads to an exponential decay in fluorescence intensity of CDs with increasing concentration of MNZ, but showed a good linear relationship (R² = 0.9930) between ln(F₀/F) with the concentration of MNZ in the range of 3.3 × 10⁻⁶ to 2.4 × 10⁻⁴ mol L⁻¹. Due to the absence of surface modification of the CDs or establishing any covalent linking between the absorber (MNZ) and the fluorophore (CDs), the developed method is simple, rapid, low-cost and less time-consuming. Meanwhile, it possesses a higher sensitivity, wider linear range, and satisfactory selectivity and has potential application for detection of MNZ in pharmaceutical preparations.

CDs were prepared using Houttuynia cordata via hydrothermal process, the absorption band of MNZ can well overlap the excitation bands of CDs, a simple, rapid approach for detection of MNZ was established on the basis of IFE.
