Developing on-site paper colorimetric monitoring technique for quick evaluating copper ion concentration in mineral wastewater

Colorimetric sensing of Cu(II) ions in water on the basis of selective chemical etching of EDA-capped Ag nanoplates

Cu(II) ions are one of the essential mineral elements in the human body, but can pose a substantial health risk to people exposed to high concentrations of Cu(II) ions over a long period. Therefore, the ability to detect Cu(II) ions in drinking water is important. In this study, a novel colorimetric sensing probe for the easy and onsite detection of Cu(II) ions in drinking water was developed. The probe was constructed through selective chemical etching of triangular Ag nanoplates with tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. Ethylenediamine (EDA) was used as an organic capping agent to improve the chemical stability of triangular Ag nanoplates. Selective chemical etching of the EDA-capped Ag nanoplates in the presence of Cu(II) ions as a result of the formation of a coordination complex between the EDA and Cu(II) ions caused remarkable changes in the nanoplates' LSPR characteristics. On the basis of this phenomenon, a novel colorimetric sensing probe capable of detecting Cu(II) ions in drinking water at concentrations above the safety limit was developed. Our findings were also extended to develop a portable and paper-based sensing probe with good long-term stability to overcome the shortcomings of liquid-phase colorimetric sensors without requiring a spectrometer. The proposed colorimetric sensing probes provide accurate results even with a real sample and offer numerous advantages over conventional sensing platforms, including clearly distinguishable color changes that can be observed by the naked eye; thus, the proposed probes can be used for the selective, reliable, and low-cost point-of-care detection of Cu(II) ions in water.

Synthesis of strong magnetic response ZIF-67 for rapid adsorption of Cu2+

With the acceleration of industrialization and urbanization, global water resources have been polluted. Among the water pollutants, heavy metals have caused great harm to the environment and organisms. When the concentration of Cu2+ in water exceeds the standard, the intake of the human body will mainly damage the nervous system. We use MOF materials with high chemical stability, specific surface area, adsorption, and other unique properties to adsorb Cu2+. MOF-67 was prepared with various solvents, and a stronger magnetic response MOF-67 with the largest surface area and best crystal form were selected. It quickly adsorbs low-concentration Cu2+ in water to purify water quality. At the same time, it can be recovered promptly through an external magnetic field to avoid secondary pollution, which conforms to the concept of green environmental protection. When the initial concentration of Cu2+ is 50 mg/L for 30 min, the adsorption rate reaches 93.4%. The magnetic adsorbent can be reused three times.

Recent Advances and Applications in Paper-Based Devices for Point-of-Care Testing

Point-of-care testing (POCT), as a portable and user-friendly technology, can obtain accurate test results immediately at the sampling point. Nowadays, microfluidic paper-based analysis devices (μPads) have attracted the eye of the public and accelerated the development of POCT. A variety of detection methods are combined with μPads to realize precise, rapid and sensitive POCT. This article mainly introduced the development of electrochemistry and optical detection methods on μPads for POCT and their applications on disease analysis, environmental monitoring and food control in the past 5 years. Finally, the challenges and future development prospects of μPads for POCT were discussed.

Characterization of biochars derived from various spent mushroom substrates and evaluation of their adsorption performance of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution

A total of 16 biochar adsorbents were produced from four types of spent mushroom substrates to investigate the effect of pyrolysis temperature and raw material composition on the Cu(II) adsorption performance of the resulting biochars. It was determined that the pyrolysis temperature and substrate composition markedly influenced the thermal stability, the degree of carbonization, surface functional group content, and structural morphology of the biochars, but did not affect the adsorption isotherms or kinetics. Optimal results were obtained with an initial pH of 5, adsorbent dosage of 1 g/L, Cu(II) concentration of 50 mg/L, and temperature of 25 °C. The four best-performing biochars conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model and followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with maximum Cu(II) adsorption between 52.6 and 65.6 mg/g. Precipitation was the dominant mechanism for Cu(II) adsorption onto Lentinus edodes spent substrate-derived biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C (LESS600), whereas complexation with surface functional groups was the prominent mechanism of Cu(II) removal by Auricularia auricula spent substrate-derived biochar pyrolyzed at 500 °C (AASS500). The Flammulina velutipes and Pleurotus ostreatus spent substrate-derived biochars pyrolyzed at 600 °C (FVSS600 and POSS600, respectively) removed Cu(II) ions using both precipitation and Cu²⁺-π complexation interactions. The findings indicate that biochar derived from spent mushroom substrates containing abundant lignin and pyrolyzed at high temperatures (500 or 600 °C) demonstrate effective Cu(II) removal because of the various physico-chemical properties discussed herein.
