Abstract
The rapid, precise, and high-throughput identification of multiple heavy metals ions holds immense importance in ensuring food safety and promoting public health. This study presents a novel smartphone-assisted colorimetric sensor array for the rapid and precise detection of multiple heavy metals ions. The sensor array is based on three signal recognition elements (AuPt@Fe-N-C, AuPt@N-C, and Fe-N-C) and the presence of different heavy metal ions affects the nanozymes-chromogenic substrate (TMB) catalytic color production, enabling the differentiation and quantification of various heavy metal ions. Combined with a smartphone-based RGB mode, the colorimetric sensor array can successfully identify five different heavy metal ions (Hg2+, Pb2+, Co2+, Cr6+, and Fe3+) as low as 0.5 μM and different ratios of binary and ternary mixed heavy metal ions in just 5 min. The sensor array successfully tested seawater and salmon samples with a total heavy metal content of 10 μM in the South China Sea (Haikou and Wenchang). Overall, this study highlights the potential of smartphone-assisted colorimetric sensor arrays for the rapid and precise detection of multiple heavy metal ions, which could significantly contribute to food safety and public health monitoring.

Abstract
Global population growth tremendously impacts the global food industry, endangering food safety and quality. Mycotoxins, particularly Ochratoxin-A (OTA), emerge as a food chain production threat, since it is produced by fungus that contaminates different food species and products. Beyond this, OTA exhibits a possible human toxicological risk that can lead to carcinogenic and neurological diseases. A selective, sensitive, and reliable OTA biodetection approach is essential to ensure food safety. Current detection approaches rely on accurate and time-consuming laboratory techniques performed at the end of the food production process, or lateral-flow technologies that are rapid and on-site, but do not provide quantitative and precise OTA concentration measurements. Nanoengineered optical biosensors arise as an avant-garde solution, providing high sensing performance, and a fast and accurate OTA biodetection screening, which is attractive for the industrial market. This review core presents and discusses the recent advancements in optical OTA biosensing, considering engineered nanomaterials, optical transduction principle and biorecognition methodologies. Finally, the major challenges and future trends are discussed, and current patented OTA optical biosensors are emphasized for a particular promising detection method.

Abstract
Bacterial infections are the second leading cause of death around the world, especially those caused by delayed treatment and misdiagnosis. Therefore, rapid discrimination and effective elimination of multiple bacteria are of great importance for improving the survival rate in clinic. Herein, a novel colorimetric sensor array for bacterial discrimination and elimination is constructed using programmable DNA-encoded iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) as sensing elements. Utilizing differential interactions of bacteria on DNA-encoded IONPs, 11 kinds of dental bacteria and 6 kinds of proteins have been successfully identified by linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Moreover, the developed sensing system also performs well in the quantitative determination of individual bacteria and identification of bacterial mixtures. More importantly, the practicability of this sensing strategy is further verified by precise differentiation of blind and artificial saliva samples. Furthermore, the sensor array is used for efficiently killing multiple bacteria, demonstrating great potential in clinical prophylaxis and therapy.

Abstract
In this study, an extremely highly sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on a newly produced monoclonal antibody (mAb) for the detection of ochratoxin A (OTA) in food samples was developed. OTA-Bovine serum albumin (BSA) conjugate was prepared and used as the immunogen for the production of the mAb. Among four hybridoma clones (8B10, 5C2, 9B7, and 5E11), the antibody from 8B10 displayed the highest affinity recognition for OTA. Based on the mAb (8B10), the IC50 and LOD of the ELISA for OTA were 34.8 pg mL-1 and 1.5 pg mL-1, respectively, which was 1.53~147 times lower than those in published ELISAs, indicating the ultra-sensitivity of our assay. There was no cross-reactivity of the mAb with the other four mycotoxins (AFB1, ZEN, DON, and T-2). Due to the high similarity in molecular structures among OTA, ochratoxin B (OTB), and ochratoxin C (OTC), the CR values of the mAb with OTB and OTC were 96.67% and 22.02%, respectively. Taking this advantage, the ELISA may be able to evaluate total ochratoxin levels in food samples. The recoveries of the ELISA for OTA in spiked samples (corn, wheat, and feed) were 96.5-110.8%, 89.5-94.4%, and 91.8-113.3%; and the RSDs were 5.2-13.6%, 8.2-13.0%, and 7.7-13.7% (n = 3), respectively. The spiked food samples (corn) were measured by ELISA and HPLC-FLD simultaneously. A good correlation between ELISA (x) and HPLC-FLD (y) with the linear regression equation of y = 0.918x - 0.034 (R2 = 0.985, n = 5) was obtained. These results demonstrated that the newly produced mAb-based ELISA was a feasible and ultra-sensitive analytical method for the detection of OTA in food samples.

Abstract
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a powerful mycotoxin present in a variety of food products, and its detection is important for human health. Here, a fluorescent aptasensor is reported for sensitive OTA determination. Specifically, the surface of bio-inspired passion fruit-like dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres-enriched quantum dots (MSNQs-apt) was first modified with the OTA aptamer as the recognition unit and fluorescence emitter, while the aptamer-complementary DNA (MNPs-cDNA) was linked with the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as the separation element. In the range of 2.56 pg/mL to 8 ng/mL, the proposed aptasensor exhibited satisfactory linearity and a detection limit of 1.402 pg/mL. The developed aptasensor achieved recoveries of 90.98-103.20% and 94.33-107.57 % in red wine and wheat flour samples, respectively. By simply replacing the aptamer, this aptasensor can be easily extended to detection of other analytes, suggesting its potential as a universal detection platform for mycotoxins in food products.

Abstract
Imidacloprid is one of the most commonly used insecticides for managing pests, thus, improving the quality and yield of vegetables. The abuse/misuse of imidacloprid contaminates the environment and threatens human health. To reduce the risk, a colorimetric enzyme-linked immunoassay assay (Co-ELISA) and chemiluminescence enzyme-linked immunoassay assay (Cl-ELISA) were established to detect imidacloprid residues in vegetables. The linear range of Co-ELISA ranged between 1.56 μg/L and 200 μg/L with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.56 μg/L. The values for Cl-ELISA were 0.19 μg/L to 25 μg/L with an LOD of 0.19 μg/L, which are lower than those of Co-ELISA. Fortifying Chinese cabbage, cucumber, and zucchini with imidacloprid at 10, 50, and 100 μg/L yielded recoveries between 81.7 and 117.6% for Co-ELISA and at 5, 10, and 20 µg/L yielded recoveries range from 69.7 to 120.6% for Cl-ELISA. These results indicate that Cl-ELISA has a high sensitivity and a rapid detection time, saving cost (antigen and antibody concentrations) and serving as a more efficient model for the rapid detection of imidacloprid residue.

Abstract
An immuno-separated assay for ochratoxin A detection coupled with a nano-affinity cleaning up for LC-confirmation was developed. Firstly, ochratoxin A was modified to quantum dot beads for immuno-fluorescent reporters. Secondly, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were conjugated with protein G for immuno-magnetic adsorbents. The immuno-separation of fluorescent reporters by magnetic adsorbents could be completed by ochratoxin A, so the fluorescent reporters released from the immune complex indicate a linear correlation with the concentration of ochratoxin A. Furthermore, the immuno-separated ochratoxin A can be eluted from magnetic adsorbent for LC-conformation. The optimized assay showed results as follows: the quantitative range of the immuno-separated assay was 0.03-100 ng mL-1 of ochratoxin A. The recoveries for spiked samples ranged from 78.2% to 91.4%, with the relative standard deviation (RSD) being 11.9%~15.3%. Statistical analysis indicated no significant difference between the HPLC-FLD results based on commercial affinity column and by nano-affinity cleaning up.

Abstract
This review summarises developments published in the period from mid-2020 to mid-2021 on the analysis of a number of diverse matrices for mycotoxins. Notable developments in all aspects of mycotoxin analysis, from sampling and quality assurance/quality control of analytical results, to the various detection and quantitation technologies ranging from single mycotoxin biosensors to comprehensive instrumental methods are presented and discussed. The summary and discussion of this past year’s developments in detection and quantitation technology covers chromatography with targeted or non-targeted high resolution mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, detection other than mass spectrometry, biosensors, as well as assays using alternatives to antibodies. This critical review aims to briefly present the most important recent developments and trends in mycotoxin determination, as well as to address limitations of the presented methodologies.

Abstract
A simple fluorescence and electrochemical dual-channel biosensor based on bifunctional Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) was proposed to detect Ochratoxin A (OTA). The bifunctional Zr-MOF, with photoluminescence properties and enormous electroactive ligands, was exploited to load OTA-specific aptamers for designing signal probes, greatly simplifying the probe-fabrication process and improving sensing reliability. Upon specific recognition of aptamer toward OTA, the anchored probe was released from the sensing interface into the reaction solution. In this circumstance, the increased amount of the signal probe in reaction solution led to an enhanced fluorescence response, while the decreased amount of the signal probe on the sensing interface resulted in a diminished electrochemical response. According to the dual-channel signal change with increasing OTA concentration, the visual fluorescence strategy was established for intuitive OTA detection, and meanwhile, sensitive electrochemical assay with a detection limit of 0.024 pg/mL was also achieved with the help of one-step electrodeposition as a sensing platform. Moreover, the proposed dual-channel assay has been successfully applied to determine OTA levels in corn samples with rapid response, superior accuracy, and high anti-interference capability, providing a promising method for food safety monitoring.

Abstract
A novel, simple and rapid colorimetric aptasensor for multiple mycotoxins (ochratoxin A (OTA) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)) detection was developed using unmodified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). In the work, the high affinities of OTA and AFB1 aptamers were employed as the recognition elements for the colorimetric determination of OTA and AFB1. In the absence of mycotoxins, the sulfhydryl-modified aptamers were directly adsorbed to the AuNP surface through Au-S bonds, further prohibiting the aggregation induced by a high concentration of salt, and the solutions remain red. In the presence of mycotoxins, the corresponding aptamer-target complexes were formed and the corresponding aptamers were detached from the surface of AuNPs, leading to the aggregation of AuNPs under the optimal salt solution and a color change. By spectroscopic quantitative analysis and visual analysis, the LODs of OTA and AFB1 were down to 0.005 ng mL-1 and 0.07 ng mL-1, respectively. Furthermore, the colorimetric aptasensor showed a high specificity in the presence of other interfering mycotoxins and metal ions. Finally, the developed aptasensor was applicable to detect OTA and AFB1 in rice samples with satisfactory performance. Our strategy has great potential for the rapid and sensitive detection of OTA and AFB1 for on-site analysis.

Abstract
A novel ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassay based on Au/CaCO3 was proposed for detecting ochratoxin A (OTA) in coffee. Au/CaCO3 nanocomposites synthesized using waste eggshells as the template with a large surface area and excellent electrochemical properties were applied for immobilizing a large amount of Ru(bpy)3 2+ and conjugating a high-affinity nanobody (prepared by the phage display technique). Coupling of the Au/CaCO3 nanocomposites and nanobody technologies provided an ultrasensitive and highly selective ECL immunosensor for OTA detection in the range of 10 pg/mL-100 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 5.7 pg/mL. Moreover, the as-prepared ECL immunosensor showed excellent performance and high stability. Finally, the proposed ECL sensor was applied to analyze OTA in coffee samples, confirming the desirable accuracy and practical applicability potential. Overall, this work presents a new nanomaterial for fabricating the sensing interface of immunosensors by harnessing natural waste as the source and a method for detecting toxic OTA in foods.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites that are known to be toxic to humans and animals. On the other hand, some mycotoxins and their analogues possess antioxidant as well as antitumor properties, which could be relevant in the fields of pharmaceutical analysis and food research. Omics techniques are a group of analytical tools applied in the biological sciences in order to study genes (genomics), mRNA (transcriptomics), proteins (proteomics), and metabolites (metabolomics). Omics have become a vital tool in the field of mycotoxins, especially contributing to the identification of biomarkers with potential use for the detection of mycotoxigenic species and the gathering of information about the biosynthetic pathways of mycotoxins in different environments. This approach has provided tools for the development of prevention strategies and control measures for different mycotoxins. Additionally, research has revealed important information about the impact of global warming and climate change on the prevalence of mycotoxin issues in society. In the context of foodomics, the aim is to apply omics techniques in order to ensure food safety. The objective of the present review is to determine the state of the art regarding the development of analytical techniques based on omics in the identification of biosynthetic pathways related to mycotoxin synthesis.

Abstract
Mycotoxins contamination is a global public health concern. Therefore, highly sensitive and selective techniques are needed for their on-site monitoring. Several approaches are conceivable for mycotoxins analysis, among which colorimetric methods are the most attractive for commercialization purposes thanks to their visual read-out, easy operation, cost-effectiveness, and rapid response. This review covers the latest achievements in the last five years for the development of colorimetric methods specific to mycotoxins analysis, with a particular emphasis on their potential for large-scale applications in food industries. Gathering all types of (bio)receptors, main colorimetric methods are critically discussed, including enzyme-linked assays, lateral flow-assays, microfluidic devices, and homogenous in-solution strategies. This special focus on colorimetry as a versatile transduction method for mycotoxins analysis is comprehensively reviewed for the first time.
