A novel metal organic gel with superior oxidase-like activity for efficient and sensitive chemiluminescence detection of uric acid

An Encyclopedic Compendium on Chemosensing Supramolecular Metal-Organic Gels

Chemosensing, an interdisciplinary scientific domain, plays a pivotal role ranging from environmental monitoring to healthcare diagnostics and (inter)national security. Metal-organic gels (MOGs) are recognized for their stability, selectivity, and responsiveness, making them valuable for chemosensing applications. Researchers have explored the development of MOGs based on different metal ions and ligands, allowing for tailored properties and sensitivities, and have even demonstrated their applications as portable sensors such as paper-based test strips for practical use. Herein, several studies related to MOGs development and their applications in the chemosensing field via UV-visible or luminance along with electrochemical approach are presented. These papers explored MOGs as versatile materials with their use in sensing bio or environmental analytes. This review provides a foundational understanding of key concepts, methodologies, and recent advancements in this field, fostering the scientific community.

Bimetallic CuFe Prussian blue analogue cubes enhanced luminol chemiluminesence and its application

In this paper, bimetallic CuFe Prussian blue analogue (CuFe PBA) was discovered to have oxidase-like activity. Luminol can be oxidized under alkaline conditions without adding other oxidants. The chemiluminescence (CL) intensity produced is more than 1000 times that of the original luminol-NaOH system. Thus, a novel luminol-NaOH-CuFe PBA CL sensor was constructed. The CL intensity of the system would drastically decrease with the addition of uric acid (UA), it served as the foundation for the creation of an enzyme-free CL sensor for the determination of UA. The CL signal intensity of the system showed a linear connection with the square of the UA concentration in the range of 0.25 to 0.45 mmol·L-1, and the limits of detection was 0.10 mmol·L-1. This system could be used to construct an efficient CL sensor for the detection of UA in human serum.

Carbon Vacancy-Enhanced Activity of Fe-N-C Single Atom Catalysts toward Luminol Chemiluminescence in the Absence of H2O2

The classic luminol-H2O2 chemiluminescence (CL) systems suffer from easy self-decomposition of H2O2 at room temperature, hindering the practical applications of the luminol-H2O2 CL system. In this work, unexpectedly, we found that the carbon vacancy-modified Fe-N-C single atom catalysts (VC-Fe-N-C SACs) can directly trigger a luminol solution to generate strong CL emission in the absence of H2O2. The Fe-based SACs were prepared through the conventional pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. The massive carbon vacancies were readily introduced into Fe-N-C SACs through a tannic acid-etching process. Carbon vacancy significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of Fe-N-C SACs on the CL reaction of luminol-dissolved oxygen. The VC-Fe-N-C SACs performed a 13.4-fold CL enhancement compared with the classic luminol-Fe2+ system. It was found that the introduction of a carbon vacancy could efficiently promote dissolved oxygen to convert to reactive oxygen species. As a proof of concept, the developed CL system was applied to detect alkaline phosphatase with a linear range of 0.005-1 U/L as well as a detection limit of 0.003 U/L. This work demonstrated that VC-Fe-N-C SAC is a highly efficient CL catalyst that can promote the analytic application of the luminol CL system.

Cu/Au nanoclusters with peroxidase-like activity for chemiluminescence detection of α-amylase

Herein, a novel chemiluminescence method was developed for efficient and sensitive detection of α-amylase activity. α-Amylase is closely related to our life, and α-amylase concentration is a marker for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. In this paper, Cu/Au nanoclusters with peroxidase-like activity were prepared using starch as a stabilizer. Cu/Au nanoclusters can catalyze H₂O₂ to generate reactive oxygen species and increase the CL signal. The addition of α-amylase makes the starch decompose and causes the nanoclusters to aggregate. The aggregation of the nanoclusters caused them to increase in size and decrease in the peroxidase-like activity, resulting in a decrease in the CL signal. α-Amylase was detected by the CL method of signal changes caused by dispersion-aggregation in the range of 0.05-8 U mL^-1 with a low detection limit of 0.006 U mL^-1. The chemiluminescence scheme based on the luminol-H₂O₂-Cu/Au NC system is of great significance for the sensitive and selective determination of α-amylase in real samples, and the detection time is short. This work provides new ideas for the detection of α-amylase based on the chemiluminescence method and the signal lasts for a long time, which can realize timely detection.

Enhanced Luminol Chemiluminescence with Oxidase-like Properties of FeOOH Nanorods for the Sensitive Detection of Uric Acid

FeOOH nanorods, as one-dimensional nanomaterials, have been widely used in many fields due to their stable properties, low cost, and easy synthesis, but their application in the field of chemiluminescence (CL) is rarely reported. In this work, FeOOH nanorods were synthesized by a simple and environmentally friendly one-pot hydrothermal method and used for the first time as a catalyst for generating strong CL with luminol without additional oxidant. Remarkably, luminol-FeOOH exhibits about 250 times stronger CL than the luminol-H₂O₂ system. Its CL intensity was significantly quenched by uric acid. We established a simple, rapid, sensitive, and selective CL method for the detection of uric acid with a linear range of 20-1000 nM and a detection limit of 6.3 nM (S/N = 3). In addition, we successfully applied this method to the detection of uric acid in human serum, and the standard recoveries were 95.6-106.4%.

This review summarizes recent progress in the development and applications of metal–organic gels (MOGs) and their hybrids and derivatives dividing them into subclasses and discussing their synthesis, design and structure–property relationship.

Enzyme-mimicking capacities of carbon-dots nanozymes: Properties, catalytic mechanism, and applications - A review

Nanozymes, novel engineered nanomaterial-based artificial enzymes, have been developed to overcome intrinsic drawbacks exist in natural enzymes including high-cost storage, structural instability, and chemical sensitivity. More recently, carbon dots (CDs) have received significant attention due to their biocompatibility, high catalytic activity, and simple surface functionalization, thus emerging as possible alternatives for biomedical and environmental applications. In this review, we analyze methods and precursors used to synthesize CDs with enzyme-mimicking behaviors. In addition, approaches such as doping or constructing hybrid nanozymes are included as possible strategies to enhance the catalytic performance of CDs. Recent studies have reported CDs that mimic different oxidoreductases, exhibiting peroxidase-, catalase-, oxidase/laccase-, and superoxide dismutase-like activities. Therefore, this review presents a detailed discussion of the mechanism, recent advances, and application for each oxidoreductase-like activity reported on nanozymes based on CDs nanomaterials. Finally, current challenges faced in the successful translation of CDs to potential applications are addressed to suggest research directions.

AIEgens-based fluorescent covalent organic framework in construction of chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer system for serum uric acid detection

A covalent organic framework (COF) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property was successfully synthesized through in situ marriage of a commonly used AIE molecule tetraphenylethylene (TPE) with Schiff base network (SNW-1) through a simple one-pot method. The TPE@SNW-1 was characterized with different techniques of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption experiments. The fluorescence of the TPE@SNW-1 strongly depends on the composition of tetrahydrofuran-water binary system. The AIE property of TPE@SNW-1 was directly supported with particle size distribution by dynamic light scattering technique. With the TPE@SNW-1 as an energy acceptor, a chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) system was constructed with bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate (TCPO)-hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) reaction as an energy donor. The chemiluminescence (CL) signal displays a good linear relationship with concentration of H₂O₂ in the 5.0-1000.0 μmol·L^-1 range, and a detection limit of 2.34 μmol L^-1. The system was further exploited to determine uric acid based on the fact that equal stoichiometric amount of H₂O₂ can be concurrently generated under the catalysis of uricase. The procedure exhibits a linear response to uric acid concentration in the range 10.0-150.0 μmol·L^-1 and a detection limit of 4.94 μmol·L^-1. The practicability of the method was demonstrated  in the determination of uric acid in human serum samples.
