Contrasting habitats but comparable microbial decomposition in the benthic and hyporheic zone

Effects of bioturbation by tubificid worms on biogeochemical processes, bacterial community structure and diversity in heterotrophic wetland sediments

Bioturbation activity of tubificid worms has been recognized as a key process influencing organic matter processing and nutrient cycling in benthic aquatic ecosystems. This activity is expected to modify benthic microbial communities by affecting the physical and chemical environment in sediments. Nevertheless, quantifications of bacterial community changes associated with bioturbation in freshwater ecosystems are still lacking. The present study aimed at evaluating the impact of tubificid worms on bacterial community structure using NGS approach (16S metabarcoding) and long (6 months) laboratory experiments on four heterotrophic wetland sediments. Worm bioturbation activity significantly stimulated biogeochemical processes at the water-sediment interface but only had a marginally significant effect on bacterial community structures. Yet, bacterial diversity was consistently reduced in presence of worms. Such decrease could be associated with the stimulation of organic matter mineralization by worms, leading to a reduction of the diversity of trophic niches available for bacterial species. The slight changes in bacterial community structures induced by bioturbation did not appear to control biogeochemical processes. Thus, the stimulation of biogeochemical processes by worm bioturbation was more associated with a stimulation of the initial bacterial community than with a drastic change in bacterial communities induced by worms.

Fate of selected neonicotinoid insecticides in soil-water systems: Current state of the art and knowledge gaps

The occurrence of emerging contaminants, such as: personal care products, medicines, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and their transformation products in the environment is of concern for human health and aquatic ecosystems due to their high persistence, toxicity and potential to bioaccumulation. Among pesticides, the main attention and thus our focus is on neonicotinoids: acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid and thiamethoxam, which are widely used classes of insecticides in agriculture. Determining the associated risk to humans and ecosystems from neonicotinoid insecticides requires detailed understanding of their fate and transport in the environment which is complex and includes diverse pathways and processes depending on environmental compartments in which they occur. This paper critically reviews the current state of the art about processes, parameters and phenomena influencing the fate of neonicotinoid insecticides in soil-water systems (i.e. soil and groundwater), and reveals existing knowledge gaps. Sorption, biodegradation, chemical transformations of neonicotinoid insecticides in the soil and leaching to the groundwater, as well as groundwater/surface water interactions are highlighted, as they determine their further migration from sources, through soils to groundwater systems and then to other environmental compartments posing ecological and human risks. A number of key knowledge gaps in fate of neonicotinoid insecticides in soil-water systems are identified, that concern mostly processes and pathways occurring in the groundwater, and require further research to assess the associated risk to humans and ecosystems.

Assessing the Functional Response to Streamside Fencing of Pastoral Waikato Streams, New Zealand

In New Zealand, streamside fencing is a well-recognised restoration technique for pastoral waterways. However, the response of stream ecosystem function to fencing is not well quantified. We measured the response to fencing of eight variables describing ecosystem function and 11 variables describing physical habitat and water quality at 11 paired stream sites (fenced and unfenced) over a 30-year timespan. We hypothesised that (1) fencing would improve the state of stream ecosystem health as described by physical, water quality and functional indicators due to riparian re-establishment and (2) time since fencing would increase the degree of change from impacted to less-impacted as described by physical, water quality and functional indicators. We observed high site-to-site variability in both physical and functional metrics. Stream shade was the only measure that showed a significant difference between treatments with higher levels of shade at fenced than unfenced sites. Cotton tensile-strength loss was the only functional measurement that indicated a response to fencing and increased over time since treatment within fenced sites. Our results suggest that stream restoration by fencing follows a complex pathway, over a space-for-time continuum, illustrating the overarching catchment influence at a reach scale. Small-scale (less than 2% of the upstream catchment area) efforts to fence the riparian zones of streams appear to have little effect on ecosystem function. We suggest that repeated measures of structural and functional indicators of ecosystem health are needed to inform robust assessments of stream restoration.
