Catalytic dehydrochlorination of lindane by nitrogen-containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (N-MWCNTs)

Air monitoring of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in Bursa Türkiye: Levels, temporal trends and risk assessment

Monitoring concentration levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is required to evaluate the effectiveness of international regulations to minimize the emissions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) into the environment. In this manner, we evaluated the spatial and temporal variations of 22 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) using polyurethane foam passive air samplers at ten stations in Bursa in 2017 and 2018. The highest concentration value for Σ22OCPs was detected in Ağaköy (775 pg/m3) and Demirtaş (678 pg/m3) sampling sites, while the lowest value was observed in Uludağ University Campus (UUC, 284 pg/m3) site. HCB, γ-HCH, Endo I, and Mirex were the most frequently detected OCPs, which shows their persistence. Diagnostic ratios of β-/(α + γ)-HCH have pointed to historical and possible illegal OCP usage in the study area. The seasonality of air concentrations (with spring and summer concentrations higher than winter and autumn concentrations) was well exhibited by α-HCH, β-HCH, ɣ-HCH, HCB, Endo I, and Mirex but not aldrin, dieldrin, and α-chlordane (CC). Levels of OCPs detected in ambient air in the current study were relatively similar to or lower than those reported in previous studies conducted in Türkiye. Back trajectory analysis was applied to identify the possible sources of OCPs detected in the sampling regions. The Clausius-Clapeyron approach was used to investigate the temperature dependence of OCP gas-phase atmospheric concentrations. The data showed that long-range atmospheric transport affects ambient air OCP concentrations in the study area.

Atmospheric concentration, spatial variations, and source identification of persistent organic pollutants in urban and semi-urban areas using passive air samplers in Bursa, Turkey

In this study, the concentration of ambient persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured for 12 months in urban and semi-urban areas using a passive air sampler. During the sampling period, a total of 14 PAH (∑₁₄PAH) concentrations measured in urban and semi-urban areas were found to be 54.4 ± 22.6 ng/m³ and 51.7 ± 34.3 ng/m³, respectively. Molecular diagnostic ratios (MDRs) were used to determine PAH sources. According to the MDR values, combustion sources were the most important PAH sources in both sampling areas. However, since the urban area is close to the industrial zone, the combustion sources occurred at high temperatures (> 800 °C), while the sources in the semi-urban area generally consisted of petrogenic fuel combustion. ∑₅₀PCB concentrations measured in the urban and semi-urban areas were found to be 522.5 ± 196.9 pg/m³ and 439.5 ± 166.6 pg/m³, respectively. Homologous group distributions were used to determine the source of PCBs. According to the homologous group distributions, tri-, tetra-, and penta-chlorinated PCBs were dominant in both sampling areas. ∑₁₀OCP concentrations measured in urban and semi-urban areas were found as 242.5 ± 104.6 pg/m³ and 275.9 ± 130.9 pg/m³, respectively. Also, α-HCH/γ-HCH and β-/(α + γ)-HCH ratios were used to determine the source of OCPs. Lindane was the predominant OCP in both sampling areas.

Ultrafine Re/Pd nanoparticles on polydopamine modified carbon nanotubes for efficient perchlorate reduction and reusability

This study synthesized nanocomposite catalysts via a modification of Re/Pd codoped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different concentrations of polydopamine (PDA), which were used for perchlorate (ClO₄^-) reduction. The loads, dispersion and reducibility of Re/Pd nanoparticles increased yet their particle sizes significantly decreased with the increase of PDA concentrations. The average diameter of Re/Pd codoped D₂CNT (CNT modified by 2 mg/mL PDA) with a narrow size distribution was measured to be 2 nm. The ultrafine Re/Pd codoped D₂CNT catalysts represented outstanding catalytic reduction activity for the conversion of ClO₄^- to Cl^- with TOF of 17.34 h^-1 under the room H₂ atmospheric pressure, which was about 8 times than that of the unmodified catalysts. Furthermore, PDA modification minimized the dissociation of Re by chemical bonding between Re and CNTs carrier and maintained good stability of nanocomposite. This study inspires us to apply green bionic methods to enhance the catalytic reduction of perchlorate by changing the physical properties of Re/Pd nanoparticles.

Complete dechlorination of lindane over N-doped porous carbon supported Pd catalyst at room temperature and atmospheric pressure

Transfer hydrogenation is highly effective for dechlorinating priority organic pollutants in wastewater. Lindane could be completely dechlorinated at room temperature and atmospheric pressure via transfer hydrogenation, in which Pd (3.1 wt%) supported on chitosan-derived porous carbon (3.1Pd@A600) and formic acid (FA) were used as catalyst and hydrogen source, respectively. Favorable catalytic activity of 3.1Pd@A600 is attributed to pyridinic N of the support that allowed Pd nanoparticles to be well-dispersed in the solid and to pyridinic N-Pd interactions that enhanced FA decomposition over that observed for commercial carbon supported Pd catalyst (5Pd@AC). In the reaction system containing 3.1Pd@A600 and FA, 99.7% lindane conversion and 100% dechlorination efficiency could be achieved at 25 °C and atmospheric pressure within 60 min. Benzene and cyclohexane were identified as end-products of lindane dechlorination. The transfer hydrogenation strategy developed in this study has wide application to chlorinated organic pollutants contained in actual waste streams.

Assessment of hexachlorcyclohexane biodegradation in contaminated soil by compound-specific stable isotope analysis

Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) was firstly applied to explore the biodegradation of hexachlorcyclohexane (HCH) isomers in contaminated soil. Concentrations and compound-specific carbon isotope ratio profiles of HCH in different specific ex-situ pilot-scale contaminated soil mesocosms were determined. The addition of nutrients and Sphingobium spp. significantly enhanced the degradation of HCH in contaminated soils within 90 days. Isomer specific biodegradation of HCHs was observed with α- and γ-HCH being more degradable than β and δ-HCH. Stable carbon isotope fractionation of HCH was observed and the δ¹³C values shifted from -28.8 ± 0.3‰ to -24.8 ± 0.7‰ upon 87.3% removal, -27.9 ± 0.2‰ to -25.9 ± 0.5‰ upon 72.8% removal, -29.4 ± 0.3‰ to -19.9 ± 0.6‰ upon 95.8% removal, and -27.8 ± 0.5‰ to -23.6 ± 0.7‰ after 96.9% removal for α, β, γ, and δ-HCH, respectively. Furthermore, the enrichment factor ε for α, β, γ, and δ-HCH biodegradation in soil was obtained for the first time as -2.0‰, -1.5‰, -3.2‰, and -1.4‰, which could play a critical role in assessing in situ biodegradation of HCH isomers in field site soil. Results from ex-situ pilot-scale experiments clearly demonstrated that CSIA could be a promising tool to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate in situ biodegradation of HCH in contaminated field site.

Chemical oxidation and reduction of hexachlorocyclohexanes: A review

Lindane (γ-hexachlorocyclohexane) and its isomers (HCH) are some of the most common and most easily detected organochlorine pesticides in the environment. The widespread distribution of lindane is due to its use as an insecticide, accompanied by its persistence and bioaccumulation, whereas HCH were disposed of as waste in unmanaged landfills. Unfortunately, certain HCH (especially the most reactive ones: γ- and α-HCH) are harmful to the central nervous system and to reproductive and endocrine systems, therefore development of suitable remediation methods is needed to remove them from contaminated soil and water. This paper provides a short history of the use of lindane and a description of the properties of HCH, as well as their determination methods. The main focus of the paper, however, is a review of oxidative and reductive treatment methods. Although these methods of HCH remediation are popular, there are no review papers summarising their principles, history, advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, recent advances in the chemical treatment of HCH are discussed and risks concerning these processes are given.

Nitrogen-doped porous carbon derived from chitosan for the enhanced dehydrochlorination of lindane under mild conditions

Dehydrochlorination of lindane is commonly conducted in homogeneous alkaline solutions, possessing a series of problems such as corrosion and poor recyclability. In order to overcome the pervasive problems concerning homogeneous catalysts, heterogeneous catalysts have been increasingly employed in the applications. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous carbons (NPCs) were developed by a simple way in which chitosan and ZnCl₂ were employed as the precursor and activation agent, respectively. NPCs exhibited high surface area (1111-1497 m²/g) and large porosity (0.464-0.621 cm³/g), resulting in a great adsorption affinity to lindane and the by-products. As solid bases, NPCs displayed an enhanced catalytic activity on lindane dehydrochlorination. This was closely related to the amount of pyridinic nitrogen on the pore surface, which could be tuned by the synthesis temperature. The optimal removal efficiency of lindane was up to 99.9% in presence of A800 (a NPC catalyst) at moderate pH (9.0) and mild temperature (45 °C) after incubation for 24 h. The rate constant for A800 suspension was improved by 2-3 orders of magnitude in comparison with that obtained in homogeneous solution at moderate pH (9.0) and mild temperatures (25-45 °C). The reusability of the material was evaluated by cycling for three times without noticeably reduced catalytic activity. This study provides a novel strategy to achieve partial dechlorination of chlorinated organic pollutants.
