Reconciling monitoring and modeling: An appraisal of river monitoring networks based on a spatial autocorrelation approach - emerging pollutants in the Danube River as a case study

Source apportionment and specific-source-site risk of quinolone antibiotics for effluent-receiving urban rivers and groundwater in a city, China

There is a large surface-groundwater exchange downstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and antibiotics upstream may influence sites downstream of rivers. Thus, samples from 9 effluent-receiving urban rivers (ERURs) and 12 groundwater sites were collected in Shijiazhuang City in December 2020 and April 2021. For ERURs, 8 out of 13 target quinolone antibiotics (QNs) were detected, and the total concentration of QNs in December and April were 100.6-4,398 ng/L and 8.02-2,476 ng/L, respectively. For groundwater, all target QNs were detected, and the total QNs concentration was 1.09-23.03 ng/L for December and 4.54-170.3 ng/L for April. The distribution of QNs was dissimilar between ERURs and groundwater. Most QN concentrations were weakly correlated with land use types in the system. The results of a positive matrix factorization model (PMF) indicated four potential sources of QNs in both ERURs and groundwater, and WWTP effluents were the main source of QNs. From December to April, the contribution of WWTP effluents and agricultural emissions increased, while livestock activities decreased. Singular value decomposition (SVD) results showed that the spatial variation of most QNs was mainly contributed by sites downstream (7.09%-88.86%) of ERURs. Then, a new method that combined the results of SVD and PMF was developed for a specific-source-site risk quotient (SRQ), and the SRQ for QNs was at high level, especially for the sites downstream of WWTPs. Regarding temporal variation, the SRQ for WWTP effluents, aquaculture, and agricultural emissions increased. Therefore, in order to control the antibiotic pollution, more attention should be paid to WWTP effluents, aquaculture, and agricultural emission sources for the benefit of sites downstream of WWTPs.

Water, Water Everywhere, but Every Drop Unique: Challenges in the Science to Understand the Role of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in the Management of Drinking Water Supplies

The protection and management of water resources continues to be challenged by multiple and ongoing factors such as shifts in demographic, social, economic, and public health requirements. Physical limitations placed on access to potable supplies include natural and human-caused factors such as aquifer depletion, aging infrastructure, saltwater intrusion, floods, and drought. These factors, although varying in magnitude, spatial extent, and timing, can exacerbate the potential for contaminants of concern (CECs) to be present in sources of drinking water, infrastructure, premise plumbing and associated tap water. This monograph examines how current and emerging scientific efforts and technologies increase our understanding of the range of CECs and drinking water issues facing current and future populations. It is not intended to be read in one sitting, but is instead a starting point for scientists wanting to learn more about the issues surrounding CECs. This text discusses the topical evolution CECs over time (Section 1), improvements in measuring chemical and microbial CECs, through both analysis of concentration and toxicity (Section 2) and modeling CEC exposure and fate (Section 3), forms of treatment effective at removing chemical and microbial CECs (Section 4), and potential for human health impacts from exposure to CECs (Section 5). The paper concludes with how changes to water quantity, both scarcity and surpluses, could affect water quality (Section 6). Taken together, these sections document the past 25 years of CEC research and the regulatory response to these contaminants, the current work to identify and monitor CECs and mitigate exposure, and the challenges facing the future.

Spatiotemporal evolution of habitat quality and its response to landscape patterns in karst mountainous cities: a case study of Guiyang City in China

Habitat quality heterogeneity is one of the concrete manifestations of landscape pattern changes caused by human activities, which is of great significance to improve habitat quality by optimizing landscape pattern, thus scientifically protecting biodiversity and promoting ecological civilization construction. The coupling of rapid urbanization and ecological restoration measures has had a significant influence on the habitat quality of fragile and fragmented karst mountainous cities in recent years. In this study, spatiotemporal dynamics and heterogeneity of habitat quality and the impact of landscape patterns on habitat quality are analyzed in Guiyang, a typical karst mountain city in southwest China, mainly using the key methodologies such as the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model, Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA), and hierarchical partitioning (HP). We found that the habitat quality index of Guiyang City improved from 0.6643 to 0.6988 during 2000-2019; the distribution of habitat quality has significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity and spatial aggregation effect with the low values or the decreased areas concentrated in and around the built-up areas or urbanization expansion areas. Landscape composition had greater contribution than landscape configuration to habitat quality. The increased areas of natural habitat have had a positive effect on habitat quality. Moreover, each landscape configuration had a significant positive or negative correlation with the habitat quality. Therefore, implementing ecological protection and restoration measures in karst mountainous cities might be an effective strategy to improve habitat quality during rapid urbanization. Furthermore, optimizing habitat patterns, reducing the habitats loss, and protecting the natural habitat integrity are crucial to improving and maintaining biodiversity in the study area.

Benchmarking the Persistence of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients in River Systems

Assessing the persistence of organic micropollutants from field data has been notoriously laborious, requiring extensive data including emissions and chemical properties, and the application of detailed mass-balance models, which often contain parameters that are impossible to measure. To overcome some of these obstacles, we developed the concept of persistence benchmarking for large rivers that receive numerous emissions and provide enough residence time to observe the dissipation of compounds. We estimated the dissipation rate constants of 41 compounds (mostly active pharmaceutical ingredients) from five measurement campaigns in the Rhine and Danube rivers using concentration rate profiles with respect to carbamazepine. Dissipation rates clearly distinguished between known fast- and slow-degrading compounds, and campaign-specific boundary conditions had an influence on a minor subset of compounds only. Benchmarking provided reasonable estimates on summer total system half-lives in the Rhine compared to previous laboratory experiments and a mass-balance modeling study. Consequently, benchmarking can be a straightforward persistence assessment method of continuously emitted organic micropollutants in large river systems, especially when it is supported by field monitoring campaigns of proper analytical quality and spatial resolution.

Occurrence, data-based modelling, and risk assessment of emerging contaminants in an alluvial aquifer polluted by river recharge

This research presents the occurrence and fate of 121 contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in an urban aquifer polluted by river recharge through a data-base modelling. Afterwards, risk quotients (RQs) are computed to determine the risk posed by CECs to human health. To this end, groundwater and river water samples were collected in four campaigns conducted from February to May 2021. Results show that 46 CECs are ubiquitous in groundwater and their concentrations vary several orders of magnitude, ranging from below the limit of quantification to 44.5·10³ ng/L for iopamidol. Transformation products (TPs) are usually detected at lower concentrations than those of the parent substances but there are some exceptions (i.e., fipronil sulphide, fipronil sulfone and O-desmethylvenlafaxine). River concentrations are higher than those detected in groundwater for some CECs, indicating the occurrence of natural attenuation processes when river water infiltrates the aquifer. A data-based advection-reaction modelling is proposed and tested for ca. 40 substances with detection frequencies higher than 90%. It provides useful quantitative information regarding the dynamic behaviour of the variables monitored, expressed in terms of characteristic length, entropy and synchronized state contribution. Finally, risk quotients (RQs) are used to assess the human health risk posed by the ubiquitous CECs in groundwater. Most CECs do not pose any risk to the different life stages considered, as the RQs evaluated are lower than 0.01. However, the pharmaceuticals valsartan and its TP valsartan acid show RQs higher than 1, indicating that these substances might be harmful to human beings.

An advection-reaction model of emerging contaminants in ground and surface waterbodies with known topology: a data-based approach

A simple data-based advection-reaction (reactive transport) model applicable to both rivers and aquifers monitoring networks is proposed. It is built on (a) available monitoring data, and (b) graph-theoretical concepts, specifically making use of the Laplacian matrix to capture the network topology and the advection process. The method yields useful information regarding the dynamic spatial behavior of the variables monitored, expressed in terms of quantitative parameters like characteristic length, entropy, first-order decay constants, synchronization between sites, and the external inputs/outputs to the system. The model was tested in an unconfined shallow aquifer located in the lower Besòs River (Spain), in which 37 pharmaceutical compounds were monitored at 7 sites, alongside two campaigns (February and May 2021). Characteristic lengths were, on average, of the same order (24.5 m) as the mean distance between consecutive monitoring sites (33.6 m), thus reflecting an adequate monitoring network design. From an estimated mean advection velocity (0.24 m·h^-1), first-order decay constants were calculated for each compound and campaign, with mean values of 0.025 h^-1 (February) and 0.005 h^-1 (May). Whereas entropy was generally slightly larger values in February than in May (mean values of 1.02 and 0.9 entropy units respectively), synchronization showed the opposite trend (mean values of 62.4% and 68.8% respectively). The input/output profiles were generally site-dependent, regardless of the compound, and campaign considered. • A new advection-reaction modeling approach directly based on experimental data obtained from monitoring campaigns together with the network topology is proposed. • The method yields new quantitative information regarding the dynamic behavior of the variables monitored, useful for both research and management purposes.

Engineered microbes as effective tools for the remediation of polyaromatic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals

Heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have become a major concern to human health and the environment due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. Traditional treatment measures for removing toxic substances from the environment have largely failed, and thus development and advancement in newer remediation techniques are of utmost importance. Rising environmental pollution with HMs and PAHs prompted the research on microbes and the development of genetically engineered microbes (GEMs) for reducing pollution via the bioremediation process. The enzymes produced from a variety of microbes can effectively treat a range of pollutants, but evolutionary trends revealed that various emerging pollutants are resistant to microbial or enzymatic degradation. Naturally, existing microbes can be engineered using various techniques including, gene engineering, directed evolution, protein engineering, media engineering, strain engineering, cell wall modifications, rationale hybrid design, and encapsulation or immobilization process. The immobilization of microbes and enzymes using a variety of nanomaterials, membranes, and supports with high specificity toward the emerging pollutants is also an effective strategy to capture and treat the pollutants. The current review focuses on successful bioremediation techniques and approaches that make use of GEMs or engineered enzymes. Such engineered microbes are more potent than natural strains and have greater degradative capacities, as well as rapid adaptation to various pollutants as substrates or co-metabolizers. The future for the implementation of genetic engineering to produce such organisms for the benefit of the environment andpublic health is indeed long and valuable.

Management implications of spatial-temporal variations of net anthropogenic nitrogen inputs (NANI) in the Yellow River Basin

It is an important content of environment management to accurately identify the time change and spatial distribution of net anthropogenic nitrogen inputs (NANI) in the river basin. In order to develop a unified management and diverse control strategy that fits the characteristics of the basin, this study establishes the NANI-S model combining the NANI model with the spatial autocorrelation analysis method, which is a quantification-analysis-control process, and takes the 70 prefecture-cities in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) as the study area. The result shows that (1) the NANI of YRB increased first and then decreased with an average NANI value of 6787.59 kg/(km²·a), showing that the overall N pollution situation of the YRB shows a trend of improvement in nitrogen (N) fertilizer input as the main source, and the average contribution rate was 47.45%. (2) There were obvious spatial differences in the NANI in the YRB because the global Moran's I fluctuated between 0.67 and 0.78. Cities with high NANI clustered in the middle and lower reaches, while low NANI clustered in the upper reaches. (3) Improving fertilizer utilization rate and industrial and domestic sewage treatment capacity was the key point of N control. Based on the results, practical policy recommendations for water pollution management were constructed, which provides a scientific basis for pollution prevention and high-quality development in the basin. In addition, this analysis method can also be applied to other basin N management studies.

Spatial autocorrelation and temporal variation of contaminants of emerging concern in a typical urbanizing river

The distribution and fate of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) was studied in relation to hydrological conditions, land use characteristics, and spatial contiguity in Houxi River. Thirty-four CECs were detected in the surface water during a three-year sampling campaign. Caffeine was most prevalent (99% frequency), while bisphenol A had the highest median concentration (78.2 ng/L) among the detected CECs. Caffeine and the other prevalent CECs lincomycin and bisphenol A, with median concentrations of 3.89 ng/L, 0.26 ng/L, and 78.2 ng/L, respectively, were positively correlated with land use types related to anthropogenic activities (grass, barren, built up, and cropland areas and landscape indexes for human activities). The analysis of similarities revealed significant annual variations, with increasing trends in both the concentrations and detection frequencies of CECs. Spatial variations were demonstrated by higher concentrations and detection frequencies downstream compared to upstream. The singular value decomposition analysis revealed that the downstream sites were the major contributors (55.6%-100%) to the spatial variability of most CECs. Moran's I analysis based on downstream contiguity indicated strong spatial autocorrelation among the connected sites for most CECs. This was further supported by longer correlation lengths for 18 CECs than the average distance between the sampling sites. The spatial autocorrelation can be attributed to the physicochemical properties of CECs and local hydrological dynamics, including temperature, wind speed, and sunshine hours. For most CECs, local contribution predominated over neighbor influence with an average value of 75.5%. The results of this study provide new insight to evaluate CEC distributions, which will be beneficial to policymakers for the management and prioritization of CEC contaminants in the Houxi watershed.

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the Danube and drinking water wells: Efficiency of riverbank filtration

Surface waters are becoming increasingly contaminated by pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), which is a potential risk factor for drinking water quality owing to incomplete riverbank filtration. This study examined the efficiency of riverbank filtration with regard to 111 PhACs in a highly urbanized section of the river Danube. One hundred seven samples from the Danube were compared to 90 water samples from relevant drinking water abstraction wells (DWAW) during five sampling periods. The presence of 52 PhACs was detected in the Danube, the quantification of 19 agents in this section of the river was without any precedent, and 10 PhACs were present in >80% of the samples. The most frequent PhACs showed higher concentrations in winter than in summer. In the DWAWs, 32 PhACs were quantified. For the majority of PhACs, the bank filtration efficiency was >95%, and not influenced by concentrations measured in the river. For carbamazepine lidocaine, tramadol, and lamotrigine, low (<50%) filtration efficiency was observed; however, no correlations were observed between the concentrations detected in the Danube and in the wells. These frequently occurring PhACs in surface waters have a relatively even distribution, and their sporadic appearance in wells is a function of both space and time, which may be caused by the constantly changing environment and micro-biological parameters, the dynamic operating schedule of abstraction wells, and the resulting sudden changes in flow rates. Due to the changes in the efficiency of riverbank filtration in space and time, predicting the occurrence and concentrations of these four PhACs poses a further challenge to ensuring a safe drinking water supply.

Quantitative Evaluation of Spatial Differentiation for Public Open Spaces in Urban Built-Up Areas by Assessing SDG 11.7: A Case of Deqing County

Urban public open spaces refer to open space between architectural structures in a city or urban agglomeration that is open for urban residents to conduct public exchanges and hold various activities. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11.7 in the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development clearly states that the distribution characteristics of public open spaces are important indicators to measure the sustainable development of urban ecological society. In 2018, in order to implement the sustainable development agenda, China offered the example of Deqing to the world. Therefore, taking Deqing as an example, this paper uses geographic statistics and spatial analysis methods to quantitatively evaluate and visualize public open spaces in the built area in 2016 and analyzes the spatial pattern and relationship of the population. The results show that the public open spaces in the built-up area of Deqing have typical global and local spatial autocorrelation. The spatial pattern shows obvious differences in different parts of the built area and attributes of public open spaces. According to the results of correlation analysis, it can be seen that the decentralized characteristics of public open spaces have a significant relationship with the population agglomeration, and this correlation is also related to the types of public open spaces. The assessment results by SDG 11.7.1 indicate that the public open spaces in the built-up area of Deqing conform to the living needs of residents on the whole and have a humanized space design and good accessibility. However, the per capita public open spaces of towns and villages outside the built area are relatively low, and there is an imbalance in public open spaces. Therefore, more attention should be paid to constructing urban public open spaces fairly.

Emerging pollutants in water environment: Occurrence, monitoring, fate, and risk assessment

The occurrence of emerging pollutants (EPs) is continuously reported worldwide. Nevertheless, only few of these compounds are toxicologically evaluated due to their vast numbers. Reliable analytical methods and toxicity assessment methods are the basis of either the management or the elimination of EPs. In this paper, literature published in 2018 on EPs were reviewed with special regard to their occurrence, detection methods, fate in the environment, and ecological toxicity assessment. Particular focus was placed on practical considerations, novel processes, and new solution strategies. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Literature published in 2018 on emerging pollutants were reviewed. The Spatial and Temporal Research on the Coupling and Coordinated Relationship between Social Economy and Energy Environment in the Belt and Road Initiatives

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was presented by China’s central government to achieve regional economic cooperation under the background of economic globalization. Energy and environmental problems, as by-products of economic success, are fundamental concerns in this grand project. An integrated method that combined the coupling coordinated degree model, Moran’s I, and the spatial panel data model was used in the research zone. Results of the coupling coordinated degree model indicated that the statuses of the social economy and the energy environment of the countries in the research zone improved from 1997 to 2014, with the changes in China and Eastern Europe being particularly significant. From the spatial econometric perspective, the coupling coordinated degrees of the countries in the research zone appeared in the spatial cluster in accordance with Moran’s I. The result of the spatial panel data model indicated that the coupling coordinated degree of one country positively affected those of its neighboring countries.

Shifts of environmental and phytoplankton variables in a regulated river: A spatial-driven analysis

The longitudinal structure of the environmental and phytoplankton variables was investigated in the Ebro River (NE Spain), which is heavily affected by water abstraction and regulation. A first exploration indicated that the phytoplankton community did not resist the impact of reservoirs and barely recovered downstream of them. The spatial analysis showed that the responses of the phytoplankton and environmental variables were not uniform. The two set of variables revealed spatial variability discontinuities and river fragmentation upstream and downstream from the reservoirs. Reservoirs caused the replacement of spatially heterogeneous habitats by homogeneous spatially distributed water bodies, these new environmental conditions downstream benefiting the opportunist and cosmopolitan algal taxa. The application of a spatial auto-regression model to algal biomass (chlorophyll-a) permitted to capture the relevance and contribution of extra-local influences in the river ecosystem.
