Quantifying relationships between watershed characteristics and hydroecological indices of Missouri streams

Quantifying climate, streamflow, and watershed control on water quality across Southeastern US watersheds

Identification of the key variables that influence spatial variation in stream water quality is crucial for designing sustainable water management strategies. In this study, we investigated the key variables that influence the spatial variability of stream of water quality, across multiple watersheds. This study uses water quality data collected over 19 years for 59 watersheds located in the Southeast Atlantic region of the United States, which includes the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. A conceptual modeling framework was developed to understand the linkage between the long-term mean water quality constituents (Total nitrogen, Total phosphorus, Turbidity, and pH) and the watershed characteristics (e.g., topography, land use/cover, soil type), streamflow data, and climatic variables (precipitation and temperature). The modeling results suggest that not only anthropogenic variables influence the mean water quality constituents, but other watershed characteristics, such as soil properties, have a significant impact. The natural watershed characteristics explain most of the spatial variability in the mean Turbidity and pH values in streams. The modeling results also suggest that once land use and soil properties are considered, watershed topography has a limited role to explain the variation in the mean water quality. Overall, the developed watershed models can be used to forecast stream water-quality responses to future land use, climate, soil, and land management changes within the study area.

A baseline assessment of hydrologic alteration degree for the Mexican catchments at gauged rivers (2016)

River regime has been modified in several freshwater bodies around the world. This alteration has led to species loss, water pollution, higher or lesser economic profits, changes in magnitude, timing, duration and rate change of flow, among others. Thus, hydrologic alteration assessment allows evaluating the regime parameters so that stakeholders, decision-makers, and dams managers may take efficient actions to mitigate or rehabilitate riparian ecosystems. In the present study, Hydrologic Alteration Indexes on Rivers (IAHRIS, for its acronym in Spanish) and the Mexican standard approach were considered to evaluate 1150 gauged catchments in Mexico and come up with an alteration baseline for 67.03% of the country surface. The comparison may assist stakeholders to propose potential changes in the Mexican standard approach. Results reveal that 232 analyzed catchments can be considered as non-altered according to IAHRIS. In stark contrast, there are 281 non-altered catchments in Mexico in agreement with the official standard approach. Altered catchments are mainly impacted by minimum flow metrics and connectivity discharge. Additionally, the correlation between alteration indexes and 5 socio-economic variables was checked to identify which variables may greatly impact hydrologic alteration evolution or mitigation. From the five selected variables, the Human Development Index is significatively correlated to extreme minimum metrics (p = 0.94) while the Gross Domestic Product to extreme maximum metrics (p = 0.90).

A Case-Study Application of the Experimental Watershed Study Design to Advance Adaptive Management of Contemporary Watersheds

Land managers are often inadequately informed to make management decisions in contemporary watersheds, in which sources of impairment are simultaneously shifting due to the combined influences of land use change, rapid ongoing human population growth, and changing environmental conditions. There is, thus, a great need for effective collaborative adaptive management (CAM; or derivatives) efforts utilizing an accepted methodological approach that provides data needed to properly identify and address past, present, and future sources of impairment. The experimental watershed study design holds great promise for meeting such needs and facilitating an effective collaborative and adaptive management process. To advance understanding of natural and anthropogenic influences on sources of impairment, and to demonstrate the approach in a contemporary watershed, a nested-scale experimental watershed study design was implemented in a representative, contemporary, mixed-use watershed located in Midwestern USA. Results identify challenges associated with CAM, and how the experimental watershed approach can help to objectively elucidate causal factors, target critical source areas, and provide the science-based information needed to make informed management decisions. Results show urban/suburban development and agriculture are primary drivers of alterations to watershed hydrology, streamflow regimes, transport of multiple water quality constituents, and stream physical habitat. However, several natural processes and watershed characteristics, such as surficial geology and stream system evolution, are likely compounding observed water quality impairment and aquatic habitat degradation. Given the varied and complicated set of factors contributing to such issues in the study watershed and other contemporary watersheds, watershed restoration is likely subject to physical limitations and should be conceptualized in the context of achievable goals/objectives. Overall, results demonstrate the immense, globally transferrable value of the experimental watershed approach and coupled CAM process to address contemporary water resource management challenges.
