Optimization of electrocoagulation process parameters for the treatment of oil industry drill site wastewater

The effluent from the oil drilling site is a complex mixture of hazardous chemicals that causes environmental impacts on its disposal. The treatment of oil drill-site wastewater has not been explored much, and understanding its characteristics and optimizing the treatment process are required. In the present study, we have optimized the electrocoagulation process with aluminum electrodes for drill-site wastewater treatment. A multi-level factorial center composite design using response surface methodology is applied to optimize the effect of current density (CD), pH, and inter-electrode distance (IED) on chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. The increasing current density shows a significant increase in COD removal, and a similar trend was observed with a decreased pH. It was found that with current density and inter-electrode distance, the maximum COD removal achieved was 70% at the CD of 19.04 mA cm-2 and IED 2.6 cm. By varying pH and current density, the COD removal reached up to 90% at pH 6 and CD 19.04 mA cm-2. The study shows that the current density is the dominant factor for the process's energy consumption and operating cost, followed by pH. This study's findings could be effectively used to develop large-scale treatment processes through electrocoagulation.

Interaction between Illite and a Pseudomonas stutzeri-Heavy Oil Biodegradation Complex

Illite is a widely distributed clay mineral with huge reserves in Earth's crust, but its effect on heavy oil biodegradation is rarely reported. This study made an investigation of the interactions between illite and a Pseudomonas stutzeri-heavy oil complex (PstHO). Results showed that, although illite exerted a negative effect on P. stutzeri degrading heavy oil by inhibiting the biodegradation of 64 saturated hydrocarbons (SHs) and 50 aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs), it selectively stimulated the biodegradation of 45 AHs with a specific structure, and its biogenic kaolinization at room temperature (35 °C) and pressure (1 atm) was observed in PstHO for the first time. The finding points out for the first time that, in PstHO, illite may change the quasi-sequential of AHs biodegradation of heavy oil, as well as its kaolinization without clay intermediate.

Multi-Temperatures Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography: A Rapid Method to Differentiate Microorganisms

The identification of microorganisms using single-temperatures pyrolysis gas chromatography (ST-PyGC) has limitations, for example, the risk of missing characteristic peaks that are essential to the chemotaxonomic interpretation. In this paper, we proposed a new multi-temperature PyGC (MT-PyGC) method as an alternative to ST-PyGC, without sacrificing its speed and quality. Six bacteria (three Gram-positive and three Gram-negative), one micro-fungus and one archaeon, representing microorganisms from different domains, were analyzed by MT-PyGC. It is found that MT pyrograms cover a more complete range of characteristic peaks than ST. Coupling with thermogravimetric analysis, chemotaxonomic information extracted from pyrograms by MT-PyGC have the potential for the differentiation of microorganisms from environments including deep subterranean reservoirs and biomass conversion/biofuel production.

Microbial characteristics of the leachate contaminated soil of an informal landfill site

Because informal landfills are not constructed in a regulated manner, they will inevitably become a source of leachate pollution to the surrounding environment over time. Microbes are an important part of the soil system, playing a vital role in maintaining the normal functionality of soil. This study investigated the microbial composition and co-occurrence pattern in the leachate contaminated soil of an informal landfill site. The landfill leachate underwent horizontal and vertical migration through the contaminated soil, resulting in significant differences in the microbial compositions of horizontal surface soil (CS) and vertical subsurface soil (DS and ES) compared to uncontaminated soil (S). The microbial diversity of CS, DS, and ES was lower than that of S. Due to the migration of landfill leachate, the microbial composition of the surface soil was substantially changed. The dominant phyla in S included Proteobacteria (26.88%), Chloroflexi (23.68%), Actinobacteroita (17.36%), and Acidobacteroita (16.86%), but in contaminated soils, Firmicutes (35.27-86.68%) were the dominant bacteria. A network analysis indicated that Bacilli, Clostridia, and Thermacetogeniazai of the Firmicutes were the keystone taxa and played a vital role in maintaining the stability of the soil ecosystem. A functional annotation of prokaryotic taxa (FAPROTAX) analysis showed that the microbes involved in the C-, N-, and S-cycles in contaminated soil were significantly different to those in uncontaminated soil. The proportion of (aerobic)-chemoheterotrophy and cellulolysis functional communities in contaminated soils was significantly reduced, while there was an increase in functional communities, such as anammox and denitrification, which are not conducive to soil nitrogen fixation. This negatively affected the maintenance of normal soil ecological functions. This study identified the microbial characteristics in leachate contaminated soil and the results will be beneficial for the remediation of contaminated soil in informal landfill sites.
