Abstract
As the initial stage of the sewage treatment system, the degradation of pollutants inevitably involves an entropy change process. Microorganisms play a vital role, where they interact with pollutants and constantly adjust own ecosystem. However, there is a lack of research on the entropy change and external dissipation processes within the sewer system. In this study, considering the characteristics of microbial population changes in the biofilm within the urban sewage pipe network, entropy theory is applied to characterize the attributes of different microorganisms. Through revealing the entropy change of the microbial population and chemical composition, a coupling relationship between the functional bacteria diversity, organic substances composition, and external dissipation in the pipeline network is proposed. The results show that the changes of nutrient availability, microbial community structure, and environmental conditions all affect the changes of information entropy in the sewer network. This study is critical for assessing the understanding of ecological dynamics and energy flows within these systems and can help researchers and operation managers develop strategies to optimize wastewater treatment processes, mitigate environmental impacts, and promote sustainable management practices.

Abstract
Nitrogen removal is often limited in municipal wastewater treatment due to the lack of sufficient carbon source. Utilizing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from waste activated sludge (WAS) fermentation broth as a carbon source is an ideal alternative to reduce the cost for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and improve denitrification efficiency simultaneously. In this study, an anaerobic system was applied for simultaneous denitrification and WAS fermentation and the addition of magnetic microparticles (MMP) were confirmed to enhance both denitrification and WAS fermentation. Firstly, the addition of MMP increased the nitrate reduction rate by over 25.36% and improve the production of N2. Additionally, the equivalent chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the detected VFAs increased by 7.06%-14.53%, suggesting that MMP promoted the WAS fermentation. The electron transfer efficiency of denitrifies was accelerated by MMP via electron-transporting system (ETS) activity and cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments, which might result in the promotional denitrification and WAS fermentation performance. Furthermore, the high-throughput sequencing displayed that, MMP enriched key microbes capable of degrading the complex organics (Chloroflexi, Synergistota and Spirochaetota) as well as the typical denitrifies (Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17 and Denitratisoma). Therefore, this study provides a novel strategy to realize simultaneous WAS utilization and denitrification for WWTPs.

Abstract
Polystyrene (PS) and magnetic polystyrene (MPS) materials have been used extensively in wastewater treatment. In this research, a 55-day anaerobic/oxic process was carried out to evaluate the effects of PS and MPS on microorganisms under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed differences in the entanglement state of the sludge with the biocarrier due to differences in surface morphology. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the microbial communities differed considerably in the presence of PS and MPS addition under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The highest abundance and diversity were observed in the PS reactor, with 929 observed species and a PD_whole_tree index of 91.58 under anaerobic conditions. MPS promoted the enrichment of bacteria related to nitrogen recycling such as Nitrospirota which increased from 1.13% in the seeding sludge to 3.48% and 10.07% in the aerobic reactors with PS and MPS, respectively. Moreover, advanced analysis showed that PS inhibited many microbial functions (e.g., protein export, nitrogen metabolism), and MPS alleviated this inhibition. This study provides significant insights into the microbial effects of PS and MPS and may shed light on biocarrier selection in future studies.

Abstract
Water, sediments, and biofilms are the typical microbial carriers in natural water environments. However, comparative analysis of the distribution of bacterial and fungal communities in different carriers within the same habitat is relatively lacking. Therefore, this study employed 16 S and ITS rRNA gene sequencing to identify bacterial and fungal community structures in water, sediments, and biofilm. The results show that (1) the OTUs numbers revealed that the bacterial abundance, at the levels of species, genus, and family, followed the order of sediments > water > biofilms, while the fungal abundance order was water > sediments > biofilms. In addition, bacteria were mainly present in sediments, while fungi were mainly present in water. (2) The α diversity index (Shannon, ACE, Simpson, and Chao1) order, for bacteria was: sediments > water > biofilms, indicating that the diversity and homogeneity of bacteria in sediments were relatively higher; for fungi was: water > sediments > biofilms, indicating that the diversity and abundance of fungi in water were high. (3) The core phylum of bacterial in the water, sediments, and biofilms was Cyanobacteria (31.3-46.1%) and Actinobacteria (27.6-36.1%); Proteobacteria (35.0-41.8%), Cyanobacteria (14.7-36.6%); and Proteobacteria (63.3-69.2%), respectively. (4) The mainly colonized fungal phyla in biofilms in the water, sediments, and biofilms were Basidiomycota (29.3-38.7%) and Ascomycota (16.2-27.7%); Zygomycota (13.1-17.5%), Basidiomycota (5.6-17.6%); and Zygomycota (23.8-44.2%). (5) There were significant species differences in bacterial and fungal communities in water, sediments, and biofilm by NMDS analysis. Findings are useful for guiding significance for the Biogeochemical cycle of elements, the environmental fate of pollutants, and the study of water ecosystems.

Abstract
Traditional indigo dyeing through anaerobic fermentation has recently gained worldwide attention in efforts to address concerns regarding the sustainability of industrial indigo dyeing and the impact of toxic reducing agents such as sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4) on human health and the ecological environment. Intriguingly, changes in the microbiota during indigo fermentation are known to potently affect the onset of indigo reduction, and thus elucidation of the microbial community transitions could help develop methods to control the initiation of indigo reduction. Here, we investigated the microbiota associated with the traditional indigo dyeing practiced in Hunan, China. Specifically, we identified the bacterial and fungal components of the microbiota at distinct stages in the indigo fermentation process by analyzing 16S rRNA gene and internal transcribed spacer sequences. Our analyses revealed two substantial changes in the microbiota during the traditional indigo fermentation process. The first change, which was probably caused by the introduction of Chinese liquor (featuring a high alcohol concentration), resulted in decreased bacterial diversity and increased proportions of Pseudomonas, Stenotrophomonas, and Bacillaceae family members. The second change, which could be attributed to the addition of specific plant species, led to an increase in the abundance of Alkalibacterium, Amphibacillus, the obligate anaerobe Turicibacter, the facultative anaerobe Enterococcus, and ZOR0006, as well as to a decrease in the pH and redox potential values. Our results indicate that the specific plant mixture included in the procedure here could be used as an effective additive to accelerate the initiation of indigo reduction during the fermentation process. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report revealing the fungal diversity during the indigo fermentation process and, furthermore, showing that the fungal diversity has remained in transition despite the relatively stable bacterial diversity in the proper indigo fermentation process. Although traditional indigo fermentation in China is challenging to manage, we can benefit from local knowledge of the fermentation process, and understanding the scientific bases of traditional indigo fermentation will facilitate the development of environmentally friendly procedures. IMPORTANCE Chemical reducing agents included in modern indigo dyeing to initiate indigo reduction can be harmful to both human health and the environment. Given that traditional indigo dyeing involves natural fermentation in a dye vat using natural organic additives without the use of toxic chemicals and that changes in the microbiota during traditional indigo fermentation potently affect the onset of indigo reduction, elucidation of these microbial community transitions could help develop methods to control the initiation of indigo reduction. This study on the microbiota associated with the traditional indigo dyeing practiced in Hunan, China, has identified the bacterial and fungal communities at distinct stages of the indigo fermentation process. Notably, the addition of specific plant species might yield the desired microbial communities and appropriate fermentation conditions, which could be used as an effective additive to accelerate the initiation of indigo reduction. This study has also revealed the fungal diversity during the indigo fermentation process for the first time and shown that the fungal diversity has remained in transition despite the relatively stable bacterial diversity. Thus, this work provides new insights into the traditional indigo fermentation process used in China and substantially enhances current efforts devoted to designing environmentally friendly methods for industrial indigo dyeing.
