Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable and bio-based polymer that has gained significant attention as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. In clinical treatment, biocompatible and non-toxic PLA materials enhance safety and reduce tissue reactions, while the biodegradability allows it to breakdown over time naturally, avoiding a second surgery. With the emergence of nanotechnology and three-dimensional (3D) printing, medical utilized-PLA has been produced with more structural and biological properties at both micro and macro scales for clinical therapy. This review summarizes current applications of the PLA-based biomaterials in drug delivery systems, orthopedic treatment, tissue regenerative engineering, and surgery and medical devices, providing viewpoints regarding the prospective medical utilization.

Abstract
Lactic acid (LA) is a crucial chemical which has been widely used for industrial application. Microbial fermentation is the dominant pathway for LA production and has been regarded as the promising technology. In recent years, many studies on LA production from various organic wastes have been published, which provided alternative ways to reduce the LA production cost, and further recycle organic wastes. However, few researchers focused on industrial application of this technology due to the knowledge gap and some uncertainties. In this review, the recent advances, basic knowledge and limitations of LA fermentation from organic wastes are discussed, the challenges and suitable envisaged solutions for enhancing LA yield and productivity are provided to realize industrial application of this technology, and also some perspectives are given to further valorize the LA fermentation processes from organic wastes. This review can be a useful guidance for industrial LA production from organic wastes on a sustainable view.

Abstract
Lactic acid (LA) is an important chemical with broad market applications. To optimize LA production, food waste has been explored as feedstock. Due to the wide variety of food waste types, most current research studies have obtained different conclusions. This study focuses on carbohydrate-rich fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) and lipid-rich kitchen waste (KW), and the effect of inoculum, temperature, micro-oxygen, and initial pH were compared. FVW has a greater potential for LA production than KW. As an inoculum, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) significantly increased the maximum LA concentration (27.6 g/L) by 50.8 % compared with anaerobic sludge (AS). FVW exhibited optimal LA production at 37 °C with micro-oxygen. Adjustment of initial pH from 4 to 8 alleviated the inhibitory effect of accumulated LA, resulting in a 46.2 % increase in maximum LA production in FVW. The expression of functional genes associated with metabolism, genetic information processing, and environmental information processing was higher at 37 °C compared to 50 °C.

Abstract
High-salt content in food waste (FW) affects its resource utilization during biotransformation. In this study, adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE), gene editing, and artificial consortia were performed out to improve the salt-tolerance of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens for producing lipopeptide under FW and seawater. High-salt stress significantly decreased lipopeptide production in the B. amyloliquefaciens HM618 and ALE strains. The total lipopeptide production in the recombinant B. amyloliquefaciens HM-4KSMSO after overexpressing the ion transportor gene ktrA and proline transporter gene opuE and replacing the promoter of gene mrp was 1.34 times higher than that in the strain HM618 in medium containing 30 g/L NaCl. Lipopeptide production under salt-tolerant consortia containing two strains (HM-4KSMSO and Corynebacterium glutamicum) and three-strains (HM-4KSMSO, salt-tolerant C. glutamicum, and Yarrowia lipolytica) was 1.81- and 2.28-fold higher than that under pure culture in a medium containing FW or both FW and seawater, respectively. These findings provide a new strategy for using high-salt FW and seawater to produce value-added chemicals.

Abstract
An annual production of about 500 million tons of household food waste (HFW) has been documented, resulting in significant implications for human health and the environment in the absence of appropriate treatment. The anaerobic fermentation of HFW in an open system offers the potential to recover high value-added products, lactic acid (LA), thereby simultaneously addressing waste treatment and enhancing resource recovery efficiency. Most of LA fermentation studies have been conducted under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions, with limited research on the production of LA through anaerobic fermentation under hyperthermophilic conditions. This study aimed to produce LA through anaerobic fermentation from HFW under hyperthermophilic conditions (70 ± 1 °C), while varying pH values (5.0 ± 0.1, 7.0 ± 0.1, and 9.0 ± 0.1), and compare the results with LA production under mesophilic (35 ± 1 °C) and thermophilic (52 ± 1 °C) conditions. The findings of this study indicated that the combination of hyperthermophilic conditions and a neutral pH (pH7_70) yielded the highest concentration of LA, measuring at 17.75 ± 1.51 g/L. The mechanism underlying the high yield of LA at 70 °C was elucidated through the combined analysis of organics dissolution, enzymes activities, and 16S rRNA microbiome sequencing.

Abstract
This study investigated the optimum pH, temperature, and food-to-microorganisms (F/M) ratio for regulating the formation of electron acceptors and donors during acidogenic fermentation to facilitate medium-chain carboxylic acids (MCCAs) production from food waste. Mesophilic fermentation at pH 6 was optimal for producing mixed volatile fatty acids (719 ± 94 mg COD/g VS) as electron acceptors. Under mesophilic conditions, the F/M ratio (g VS/g VS) could be increased to 6 to generate 22 ± 2 g COD/L of electron acceptors alongside 2 ± 0 g COD/L of caproic acid. Thermophilic fermentation at pH 6 was the best condition for producing lactic acid as an electron donor. However, operating at F/M ratios above 3 g VS/g VS under thermophilic settings significantly reduced lactic acid yield. A preliminary techno-economic evaluation revealed that converting lactic acid and butyric acid generated during acidogenic fermentation to caproic acid was the most profitable food waste valorization scenario and could generate 442-468 €/t VS/y. The results presented in this study provide insights into how to tailor acidogenic fermentation reactions to desired intermediates and will help maximize MCCAs synthesis.

Abstract
Self-produced lactic fermentation (SPLF) is a new valued utilization technology, but its impact on gas emission remains unclear. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of replacing the H2SO4 additive with SPLF on greenhouse gas (GHG), and volatile sulfur compound (VSC) emissions from swine slurry storage in a laboratory-scale study. In this study, SPLF is directed toward producing lactic acid (LA) through the anaerobic fermentation of slurry and apple waste under the most suitable conditions, with the LA concentration kept at 10,000-52000 mg COD/L and the pH remaining within 4.5 during the following 90 days of slurry storage. Compared with that in the slurry storage treatment (CK), the GHG emissions decreased by 86% and 87% in the SPLF and H2SO4 groups, respectively. The low pH (i.e., less than 4.5) inhibited the growth of Methanocorpusculum and Methanosarcina and resulted in very low mcrA gene copies in the SPLF group, leading to a reduction in CH4 emissions. The methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, and H2S emissions in the SPLF group were reduced by 57%, 42%, 22%, and 87% and increased by 2206%, 61%, 173%, and 1856% in the H2SO4 group, respectively. Therefore, SPLF can be an innovative bioacidification technology for effectively reducing GHG and VSC emissions from animal slurry storage.

Abstract
The demand for lactic acid and lactic acid-derived products in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries is increasing year by year. In recent decades, the synthesis of lactic acid by microbials has gained much attention from scientists due to the superior optical purity of the product, its low production costs, and its higher production efficiency compared to chemical synthesis. Microbial fermentation involves the selection of feedstock, strains, and fermentation modes. Each step can potentially affect the yield and purity of the final product. Therefore, there are still many critical challenges in lactic acid production. The costs of feedstocks and energy; the inhibition of substrates and end-product; the sensitivity to the inhibitory compounds released during pretreatment; and the lower optical purity are the main obstacles hindering the fermentation of lactic acid. This review highlights the limitations and challenges of applying microbial fermentation in lactic acid production. In addition, corresponding solutions to these difficulties are summarized in order to provide some guidance for the industrial production of lactic acid.

Abstract
The production of lactic acid (LA) from agricultural wastes attracts great attention because of the sustainability and abundance of lignocellulosic feedstocks, as well as the increasing demand for biodegradable polylactic acid. In this study, we isolated a thermophilic strain Geobacillus stearothermophilus 2H-3 for use in robust production of L-(+)LA under the optimal conditions of 60 °C, pH 6.5, which were consistent with the whole-cell-based consolidated bio-saccharification (CBS) process. Sugar-rich CBS hydrolysates derived from various agricultural wastes, including corn stover, corncob residue, and wheat straw, were used as the carbon sources for 2H-3 fermentation by directly inoculating 2H-3 cells into the CBS system, without intermediate sterilization, nutrient supplementation, or adjustment of fermentation conditions. Thus, we successfully combined two whole-cell-based steps into a one-pot successive fermentation process to efficiently produce LA with high optical purity (99.5%), titer (51.36 g/L), and yield (0.74 g/gbiomass). Abstract
Biogenic municipal solid waste (BMSW) and food waste (FW) with high energy density are ready to tap renewable resources for industrial scale ethanol refinery foreseen for establishing bio-based society. Circular economy has occupied limelight in the domain of renewable energy and sustainable chemicals production. The present review highlights the importance of BMSW/FW as newer feed reserves that can cater as parent molecules for an array of high-visibility industrial products along with bioethanol upon implementing a judicious closed-cascade mass-flow mechanism enabling ultimate feed and waste stream valorisation. Though these organics are attractive resources their true potential for energy production has not been quantified yet owing to their heterogeneous composition and associated technical challenges thus pushing waste refinery and industrial symbiosis concepts to backseat. To accelerate this industrial vision, the novel bioprocessing strategies for enhanced and low-cost production of bioethanol from BMSW/FW along with other commercially imperative product portfolio have been discussed.
