Impact of wildfire recurrence on soil properties and organic carbon fractions

The recurrence and severity of wildfire is on the rise due to factors like global warming and human activities. Mediterranean regions are prone to significant wildfire events, which cause extensive damage to ecosystems and soil properties. This study focuses on the municipality of Allande in south-western Asturias (Spain), a region highly affected by recurrent wildfires. In this regard, we sought to examine how the recurrence of such fires influences soil organic carbon fractionation and other soil parameters, such as nitrogen fractionation, pH, and cation exchange capacity. The study involved six sampling plots with between varying fire recurrence levels, from 0 to 4 events between 2005 and 2022. The results revealed some significant effects of wildfires recurrence on soil texture, inorganic elemental composition and CEC, but not on pH and CE. In soil affected by recurrent fires, labile carbon fractions (cold-water extractable & hot-water extractable), and fulvic acid concentrations decreased by up to 36%, 5%, and 45%, respectively in comparison with undisturbed soil. In contrast, humic acid concentration remained stable or increased in soils damaged by fire. Additionally, nitrogen species in soil were observed to decrease significantly in high recurrence scenarios, especially nitrate. On the basis of our findings, we conclude that wildfires impact the distinct fractions of organic carbon and nitrogen in soils and that this effect is aggravated by increasing recurrence.

Effects of the application of nanoscale zero-valent iron on plants: Meta analysis, mechanism, and prospects

In order to determine the ideal conditions for the application of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) in agricultural production, this review studies the effects of nZVI application on plant physiological parameters, presents its mechanism and prospective outcomes. In this research, it was observed that the application of nZVI had both favorable and unfavorable effects on plant growth, photosynthesis, oxidative stress, and nutrient absorption levels. Specifically, the application of nZVI significantly increased the biomass and length of plants, and greatly reduced the germination rate of seeds. In terms of photosynthesis, there was no significant effect for the application of nZVI on the synthesis of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll and carotenoids). In terms of oxidative stress, plants respond by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzyme under mild nZVI stress and trigger oxidative burst under severe stress. In addition, the application of nZVI significantly increased the absorption of nutrients (B, K, P, S, Mg, Zn, and Fe). In summary, the application of nZVI can affect the plant physiological parameters, and the degree of influence varies depending on the concentration, preparation method, application method, particle size, and action time of nZVI. These findings are important for evaluating nZVI-related risks and enhancing nZVI safety in agricultural production.

High resilience of soil bacterial communities to large wildfires with an important stochastic component

Wildfires alter the structure and functioning of ecosystems through changes in their biotic and abiotic components. A deeper understanding recovery process concerning diverse communities and properties within these components can provide valuable insights into the ecological effects of wildfires. Therefore, it is appropriate to enhance our understanding of the resilience of bacterial communities after wildfires within Mediterranean ecosystems. In this research, soil bacterial community resilience was evaluated in three types of ecosystems for two fire severities, two years after a large wildfire in Mediterranean ecosystems. The resilience of the soil bacterial community refers to its ability to return to original state after disturbance. This capacity can be estimated by the study of its recovery over time. In this study we evaluated the resilience using the variables: alpha diversity, beta diversity and the changes in abundance of both OTUs (Operational Taxonomic Units) and principal bacterial taxa (phyla, classes or orders). Our results showed that resilience depends on fire severity and type of ecosystem. We studied three ecosystems with different stage in the secondary succession: low maturity shrublands and heathlands, and high maturity oak forests. In general, high resilience in the soil bacterial community was observed in heathlands under low and high fire severity conditions. The other two ecosystems were resilient only under low fire severity. Stochastic replacement of the abundance of the OTUs was observed in all three ecosystems, with a notable impact on oak forests, under during high-severity conditions.
