Microplastic formation and simultaneous release of phthalic acid esters from residual mulch film in soil through mechanical abrasion

The combined effects of azoxystrobin and different aged polyethylene microplastics on earthworms (Eisenia fetida): A systematic evaluation based on oxidative damage and intestinal function

Pesticides and microplastics are common pollutants in soil environments, adversely affecting soil organisms. However, the combined toxicological effects of aged microplastics and pesticides on soil organisms are still unclear. In this study, we systematically studied the toxicological effects of azoxystrobin and four different aged polyethylene (PE) microplastics on earthworms (Eisenia fetida). The purpose was to evaluate the effects of aging microplastics on the toxicity of microplastics-pesticides combinations on earthworms. The results showed that different-aged PE microplastics promoted azoxystrobin accumulation in earthworms. Meanwhile, combined exposure to azoxystrobin and aged PE microplastics decreased the body weight of earthworms. Besides, both single and combined exposure to azoxystrobin and aged PE microplastics could lead to oxidative damage in earthworms. Further studies revealed that azoxystrobin and aged PE microplastics damage the intestinal structure and function of earthworms. Additionally, the combination of different aged PE microplastics and azoxystrobin was more toxic on earthworms than single exposures. The PE microplastics subjected to mechanical wear, ultraviolet radiation, and acid aging exhibited the strongest toxicity enhancement effects on earthworms. This high toxicity may be related to the modification of PE microplastics caused by aging. In summary, these results demonstrated the enhancing effects of aged PE microplastics on the toxicity of pesticides to earthworms. More importantly, aged PE microplastics exhibited stronger toxicity-enhancing effects in the early exposure stages. This study provides important data supporting the impact of different aged PE microplastics on the environmental risks of pesticides.

Comparative evaluation of soil accumulation of light stabilizers from biodegradable mulching films versus conventional polyethylene ones

Light stabilizers are commonly used as additives in mulching films and have environmental persistence, bioaccumulation and ecotoxicity. However, their occurrence and distribution in mulching films and accumulation in mulched soils are seldom reported. This study firstly presents a comprehensive screening of 19 light stabilizers in 65 mulching films and 30 farmland soils collected in China, of which five and eight light stabilizers were 100% detected, respectively. The light stabilizer concentration in biodegradable mulching films was significantly higher than that in polyethylene ones, with median concentrations of 1.75 × 106 μg/kg and 4.86 × 103 μg/kg, respectively. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between the light stabilizer concentration in mulching films and in soils. This indicates that mulching films play a critical role in the accumulation of light stabilizers in farmland soils, and biodegradable mulching films significantly increase benzotriazole light stabilizers in soils. Although the light stabilizer concentration in farmland soil is relatively low, the sustainable quantities of mulching film input and the long-term accumulation will still pose a threat to the ecological environment and organism health. Consequently, our work reveals the occurrence and environmental risk of light stabilizers in mulching films and farmland soils and brings attention to light stabilizers in the soil environment.

Insights into the effect of hydrochar-derived dissolved organic matter on the sorption of diethyl phthalate onto soil: A pilot mechanism study

Biowaste-derived hydrochar is an emerging close-to-natural product and has shown promise for soil improvement and remediation, but the environmental behavior of the dissolved organic matter released from hydrochar (HDOM) is poorly understood. Focusing on the typical mulch film plasticizer diethyl phthalate (DEP), we investigated the effect of HDOM on the sorption behavior of DEP on soil. The relatively low concentration of HDOM (10 mg L-1, 25 mg L-1) decreases the sorption quantity of DEP on soil, while it increases by a relatively high concentration, 50 mg L-1. The transformation from multilayer to monolayer sorption of DEP on soil occurs as the concentration of HDOM increases. The tryptophan-like substance is the main component of HDOM sorbed to soil, reaching 49.82 %, and results in competition sorption with DEP. The soil pores are blocked by HDOM, which limits the pore filling and mass transfer of DEP, but partitioning is significantly enhanced. The surface functional groups in HDOM are similar to those in soil, and chemical sorption, mainly composed of hydrogen bonding, exists but is not significantly strengthened. We identified the specific impact of HDOM on the sorption of organic pollutants on soil and provide new insights into the understanding of the environmental behavior of hydrochar.

Evaluation of niche, diversity, and risks of microplastics in farmland soils of different rocky desertification areas

The occurrence, sources, effects, and risks of microplastics (MPs) in farmland soils have attracted considerable attention. However, the pollution and ecological characteristics of MPs in farmland soils at different levels of rocky desertification remain unclear. We collected and analyzed farmland soil samples from rocky desertification areas in Guizhou, China, ranging from no to heavy risks. We explored differences and migration of MPs across these areas, unveiled the relationship between diversity, niche, and risks of MPs, and determined influencing factors. The average abundance of soil MPs was 8721 ± 3938 item/kg, and the abundance and contamination factor (CF) of MPs escalated with the increase in rocky desertification level. Diversity, niche, and risk of soil MPs in different rocky desertification areas were significantly different. Rocky desertification caused both MP community differences and linked MP communities at different sites. Diversity and niche significantly affected MP risk (p < 0.05). Environmental factors with significant correlations (p < 0.05) with the abundance and ecological characteristics of MPs varied significantly in soils of different rocky desertification areas. This study advances our comprehension of MP pollution in farmland soils within rocky desertification areas, offering essential data and theoretical insights for the development of control strategies.

The reciprocity principle in mulch film deterioration and microplastic generation

Plastic film mulching stands as a globally employed agricultural technology pivotal to agricultural progress. Nevertheless, the environmental degradation of plastic mulch films underscores their role as a major source of secondary plastic pollutants, particularly microplastics. While a growing body of research has drawn attention to the rising issue of microplastic pollution and its environmental implications stemming from the use of plastic mulch films, there remains a significant knowledge gap regarding the kinetics and rate-limiting mechanisms governing the generation of microplastics during processes driven by plastic photodegradation. Moreover, a comprehensive quantification of the connection between mulch deterioration and the behavior of microplastic release and accumulation has yet to be fully realized. In this study, a kinetic equation was formulated to characterize the degradation of plastic mulch films and the subsequent release and accumulation of microplastics under light exposure. The results demonstrate that with increasing irradiation time, the change in the release rate exhibits a bell-shaped Gaussian probability distribution, while the cumulative alteration of microplastics follows a Gaussian distribution. Remarkably, once the exposure time reaches μ + 3σ, the accumulation plateaus at 99.7%. This research establishes a theoretical framework for the prospective assessment of plastic mulch lifespan and its environmental repercussions. Moreover, the findings provide valuable insights for optimizing plastic mulch design and devising strategies to mitigate microplastic pollution.

Characterization of the degradation products of biodegradable and traditional plastics on UV irradiation and mechanical abrasion

Biodegradable plastics are popular alternatives to traditional plastics in packaging, mulch sheets, and other applications. However, there are concerns regarding the potential for pollution as a result of their abiotic degradation. In this study, we investigated the degradation of biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate/polylactic acid (PBAT/PLA) and traditional polyethylene (PE) plastic under two typical abiotic conditions: ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and mechanical abrasion (MA) for up to nine months. The physical and chemical properties of the two plastics during the degradation period were assessed. In addition, quantitative analysis of the degradation products was carried out using a new method called membrane filtration and total organic carbon determination (MF-TOCD). The results revealed that PBAT/PLA underwent a greater number of changes in surface morphology, thermal stability, and mass loss compared to PE when exposed to UV and MA during the test period. Further analysis of the released products revealed that PBAT/PLA released more products than PE. Overall, PE mainly produced microplastics (MPs) larger than 0.22 μm, whereas PBAT/PLA produced products <0.22 μm (nanoplastics and soluble molecules) on UV exposure. In contrast, when subjected to MA, PBAT/PLA produced MPs larger than 0.22 μm, and these accumulated gradually; this behavior is similar to that of PE. By combining the mass loss and the TOC data for the degradation products, we determined that long-term UV irradiation generated a large number of smaller particles from PBAT/PLA that could further degrade rather than accumulate in the environment. In summary, we established a new method to separate and characterize MPs as well as nanoplastics and soluble molecules, and provided new insights into the fate of PBAT/PLA during abiotic degradation.

Role of soil organic matter on the retention and mobility of common plastic additives, Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, bisphenol A and benzophenone, in soil

The objectives of this study were to assess the role of soil organic matter on retaining plastic additives, Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Bisphenol A (BPA) and Benzophenone (BP), to postulate the retention mechanisms and mobility in soil. Batch experiments were conducted for red yellow podzolic soil (OM) and soil subjected to high temperature oxidation at 600 °C for 2 h to remove total organic matter (OMR). Pristine soil, which contains organic matter abbreviated as OM (soil with organic matter) whereas total organic matter removed soil is abbreviated as OMR (organic matter removed soil). The pH edge and kinetic experiments were conducted with 20 g/L soil suspension spiked with 10 mg/L of each additive, whereas 1-20 mg/L concentration range was used in isotherm experiments and analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography. DEHP demonstrated the highest retention, 331 and 615.16 mg/kg in OM and OMR soils respectively, at pH 6.6. However, BPA and BP showed highest retentions of 132 and 128 mg/kg, respectively around pH 4.3 in pristine soil. DEHP interaction with soil OM indicated weak physical bonding whereas chemisorption to OMR soil. In the case of BPA, physisorption governed its interaction with both soil organic matter and mineral fraction. Nevertheless, BP demonstrated chemical interactions with OM and minerals. Desorption of DEHP was close to 100% however, BPA and BP were <15%. Overall, DEHP and BPA could be easily released into soil water and possibly be available for plant uptake while, BP is immobilized in soil.
