Abstract
The World Health Organization loosened the air quality guideline for daily sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations from 20 μg/m3 to 40 μg/m3. However, the guideline for SO2 concentrations in 2021 raised public concerns since there was no sufficient evidence that low-concentration SO2 exposure is harmless to the population's health, including mental health. We analyzed the associations between low-concentration SO2 exposure and incidence risks of total and cause-specific mental disorders, including depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia spectrum disorder. 245,820 urban participants with low-concentration SO2 exposure (<8 μg/m3) at baseline were involved in the analyses from the UK Biobank. SO2 exposure (2006-2022) was estimated using high-resolution annual mean concentration maps from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Mental disorders and corresponding symptoms were identified using healthcare records and an online questionnaire, respectively. Associations were examined using both time-independent (2006-2010) and time-dependent (from 2006 to 2022) Cox regression models and logistic regression models with full adjustments for potential confounders. Stratification analyses were further conducted to identify vulnerable populations. Long-term exposure to low-concentration SO2 (per 1.36 μg/m3) was associated with increased risks of mental disorders, depressive disorder, and anxiety disorder with hazard ratios of 1.02 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.00, 1.03), 1.11 (95% CI: 1.07, 1.16), and 1.10 (95% CI: 1.06, 1.14) in the time-independent model, respectively. Associations were stronger for younger individuals. Additionally, the low-concentration SO2 exposure was linked to several psychiatric symptoms, such as trouble concentrating and restlessness, with odds ratios of 1.07 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.10) and 1.11 (95% CI: 1.07, 1.14), respectively. This study demonstrated significant associations of long-term exposure to low-concentration SO2 with mental disorders, highlighting the need for stricter regulations for SO2 to better protect public health and improve air quality in urban areas, in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep loss and sleep deprivation (SD) cause deleterious influences on health, cognition, mood and behaviour. Nevertheless, insufficient sleep and SD are prevalent across many industries and occur in various emergencies. The deleterious consequences of SD have yet to be fully elucidated. This study aimed to assess the extensive influences of SD on physiology, vigilance, and plasma biochemical variables. Methods Seventeen volunteers were recruited to participate in a 32.5-h SD experiment. Multiple physiological and cognitive variables, including tympanic temperature, blood oxygen saturation (SaO2), and vigilance were recorded. Urinal/salivary samples were collected and subjected to cortisol or cortisone analysis, and plasma samples were subjected to transcriptomic analysis of circular RNA (circRNA) expression using microarray. Plasma neurotransmitters were measured by targeted metabolic analysis, and the levels of inflammatory factors were assessed by antibody microarray. Results The volunteers showed significantly increased sleepiness and decreased vigilance during SD, and the changes in circadian rhythm and plasma biochemistry were observed. The plasma calcium (p = 0.0007) was induced by SD, while ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA, p = 0.0030) and total bile acid (TBA, p = 0.0157) decreased. Differentially expressed circRNAs in plasma were identified, which are involved in multiple signaling pathways including neuronal regulation and immunity. Accordingly, SD induced a decrease in 3-hydroxybutyric acid (3OBH, p = 0.0002) and an increase in thyroxine (T4, p < 0.0001) in plasma. The plasma anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was downregulated while other ten inflammatory factors were upregulated. Conclusion This study demonstrates that SD influences biochemical, physiological, cognitive variables, and the significantly changed variables may serve as candidates of SD markers. These findings may further our understanding of the detrimental consequence of sleep disturbance at multiple levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Earlier studies showed a negative correlation between life's simple 7 (LS7) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), but no association has been found between life's essential 8 (LE8), an improved version of LS7, and hs-CRP. HYPOTHESIS This study investigated the association between LE8 and hs-CRP utilizing data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. METHODS A total of 7229 adults were incorporated in our study. LE8 was scored according to American Heart Association guidelines, and LE8 was divided into health behaviors and health factors. Serum samples of the participants were used to measure hs-CRP. To investigate the association between LE8 and hs-CRP, weighted linear regression, and restricted cubic spline were utilized. RESULTS Among 7229 participants, the average age was 48.03 ± 16.88 years, 3689 (51.2%) were females and the median hs-CRP was 1.92 (0.81-4.49) mg/L. In adjusted weighted linear regression, a negative correlation was observed between the LE8 score and hs-CRP. Compared with the low LE8 score, the moderate LE8 score β was -0.533 (-0.646 to -0.420), and the high LE8 score β was -1.237 (-1.376 to -1.097). Health behaviors and health factors were also negatively associated with hs-CRP. In stratified analyses, the negative correlation between LE8 and hs-CRP remained consistent across subgroups. CONCLUSION There was a negative correlation between LE8 as well as its sub-indicator scores and hs-CRP. Maintaining a positive LE8 score may be conducive to lowering the level of hs-CRP.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Growing evidence linked inflammation with sleep. This study aimed to evaluate the associations and causal effects of sleep traits including insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and sleep duration (short: <7 h; normal: 7-9 h; long: ≥9 h), with levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukins. METHODS Standard procedures of quantitative analysis were applied to estimate the expression differences for each protein in compared groups. Then, a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to explore their causal relationships with published genome-wide association study summary statistics. The inverse-variance weighted was used as the primary method, followed by several complementary approaches as sensitivity analyses. RESULTS A total of 44 publications with 51 879 participants were included in the quantitative analysis. Our results showed that the levels of CRP, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and TNF-α were higher from 0.36 to 0.58 (after standardization) in insomnia compared with controls, while there was no significant difference between participants with EDS and controls. Besides, there was a U/J-shaped expression of CRP and IL-6 with sleep durations. In MR analysis, the primary results demonstrated the causal effects of CRP on sleep duration (estimate: 0.017; 95% confidence intervals [CI], [0.003, 0.031]) and short sleep duration (estimate: -0.006; 95% CI, [-0.011, -0.001]). Also, IL-6 was found to be associated with long sleep duration (estimate: 0.006; 95% CI, [0.000, 0.013]). These results were consistent in sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS There are high inflammatory profiles in insomnia and extremes of sleep duration. Meanwhile, elevated CRP and IL-6 have causal effects on longer sleep duration. Further studies can focus on related upstream and downstream mechanisms.

Abstract
Chronic sleep deficiency (CSD) poses a threat to physical health, mental well-being, and social functioning. The concept of behaviorally induced CSD has not changed much since it was first introduced four decades ago. Behaviorally induced CSD is currently referred to as insufficient sleep syndrome (ISS). In the latest edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-3, 2014), ISS is considered a disorder of central hypersomnolence with diagnostic codes ICD-9-CM 307.44 and ICD-10-CM F51.12. In this review, we will describe the biological importance of sleep, the ramifications of CSD on the individual and society, the nosological status and diagnostic features of ISS, and the apparent lack of attention to ISS in contemporary medical practice and public health programs. The last three decades have seen a global rise in voluntary sleep curtailment such that ISS may already be the leading cause of CSD, not only in adults but also in school-aged children and adolescents. Acknowledging ISS as a public health priority is a necessary first step in our response to the global threat of CSD and CSD-related health consequences. It is only by confronting ISS directly that we can hope to develop and implement effective educational and advocacy programs, along with more responsible public health policies and regulations.

Abstract
Background Sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality contribute to increases in oxidative stress, antioxidant imbalance, and a pro-inflammatory state which may predispose to a higher risk of diabetes. Our objective was to estimate the contributions of C-reactive protein (CRP), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), and micronutrient antioxidants (bilirubin, carotenoids, uric acid, vitamins A, C-E?) to the relationships between sleep-fasting insulin concentration and -glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Methods Data from the 2005/06 US National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey were used (N = 1,946; 20 y+). Sleep quality and quantity was assessed by the Sleep Disorders Questionnaire, and fasting blood was collected to quantify CRP, GGT, antioxidant micronutrients, insulin concentration, and HbA1c. The bootstrap method was used to estimate the amount of mediation or contribution of these mediators to the sleep-insulin concentration and -HbA1c relationships, which were quantified as large (≥0.25) or moderate (≥0.09). Results The sleep duration-fasting insulin relationship was mediated by GGT, carotenoids, uric acid, and vitamins C and D, whereas CRP and bilirubin were non-significant mediators of a moderate effect size. Similarly, the sleep quality-fasting insulin relationship was mediated by CRP, bilirubin and vitamin C, whereas GGT, carotenoids, uric acid, and vitamin D were non-significant large-to-moderate mediators. To a lesser degree, these micronutrients mediated for the relationship between sleep-HbA1c levels. Conclusion Several factors related to inflammation, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status were found to lie on the pathway of the sleep-insulin and -glycemic control relationships. Sleep hygiene, reduced systemic inflammation/oxidative stress, and optimal antioxidants intake are potentially beneficial targets for managing diabetes risk.
