Abstract
An electrochemical sensing approach was developed for the detection of the agricultural antibiotic drug kasugamycin. The method involves the construction of an electrochemical sensor comprising molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) embedded within a carbon paste (CP) matrix. The MIPs are designed to have imprinted sites that match the size and geometry of the Cu(II)-kasugamycin coordinated complex. Upon removal of kasugamycin, cavities suitable for the drug's entrance are formed within the MIPs. The presence of Cu(II) facilitates the detection of the drug by generating a redox signal of Cu(II)-Cu(I), which can be easily detected using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The signal response of Cu(II)-Cu(I) increases in the presence of the drug, promoting the accumulation of Cu(II) ions within the imprinted cavities. Under optimized conditions, the anodic peak (Ipa) signal of Cu(II)-Cu(I) exhibits an increase proportional to the concentration of kasugamycin within the range of 0.15-140 μM. The detection limit (LOD, S/N = 3) achieved is 0.046 μM. The proposed sensor demonstrates several characteristic features including good stability, reliable performance, a low detection limit, and excellent selectivity. The Cu(II)-MIP@CP sensor proved effective in detecting kasugamycin within complex samples like meat, milk, and cucumber, yielding recovery% ranging from 96.0 to 103.8%. Additionally, the relative standard deviation % (RSD%) fell within the range of 2.2% to 4.0%, indicating good precision and reliability.

Abstract
Cocoa (Theobroma cacao, L.) represents an important market that gained relevance and became an esteemed commodity thanks to cocoa powder, chocolate, and other related products. This work analyzed 59 cocoa powder samples from the European market. Three distinct subgroups were identified: organic or conventional, alkalized or not alkalized, and raw or roasted processing. The impact of the technological process on their pH, color, and compositional traits, as well as their content of biogenic amines and salsolinol, was evaluated. The phenolic fraction was also investigated through both common and emerging methods. The results depict that the influence of the agronomical practices (organic/conventional) did not significantly (p < 0.05) affect the composition of the cocoa powders; similarly, the roasting process was not a determinant of the compounds traced. On the other hand, the alkalinization process greatly impacted color and pH, no matter the cocoa's provenience or obtention or other processes, also resulting in reducing the phenolic fraction of the treated samples. Principal component analysis confirmed that the alkali process acts on pH, color, and phenolic composition but not on the content of other bioactive molecules (biogenic amines and salsolinol). All the samples were safe, while the alkalized powders saw a great reduction in beneficial biocompounds. A novel strategy could be to emphasize on the label whether cocoa powder is non-alkalized to meet the demand for more beneficial products.

Abstract
The production of 2D/2D heterostructures (HTs) with favorable electrochemical features is challenging, particularly for semiconductor transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). In this studies, we introduce a CO2 laser plotter-based technology for the realization of HT films comprising reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and 2D-TMDs (MoS2, WS2, MoSe2, and WSe2) produced via water phase exfoliation. The strategy relies on the Laser-Induced production of HeterosTructures (LIHTs), where after irradiation the nanomaterials exhibit changes in the morphological and chemical structure, becoming conductive easily transferable nanostructured films. The LIHTs were characterized in detail by SEM, XPS, Raman and electrochemical analysis. The laser treatment induces the conversion of GO into conductive highly exfoliated rGO decorated with homogeneously distributed small TMD/TM-oxide nanoflakes. The freestanding LIHT films obtained were employed to build self-contained sensors onto nitrocellulose, where the HT works both as a transducer and sensing surface. The proposed nitrocellulose-sensor manufacturing process is semi-automated and reproducible, multiple HT films may be produced in the same laser treatment and the stencil-printing allows customizable design. Excellent performance in the electroanalytical detection of different molecules such as dopamine (a neurotransmitter), catechin (a flavonol), and hydrogen peroxide was demonstrated, obtaining nanomolar limits of detection and satisfactory recovery rates in biological and agrifood samples, together with high fouling resistance. Considering the robust and rapid laser-induced production of HTs and the versatility of scribing desired patterns, the proposed approach appears as a disruptive technology for the development of electrochemical devices through sustainable and accessible strategies.

Abstract
Nowadays, the adoption of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) techniques is undergoing an impressive increase. In light of this, one of the most promising strategies is the novel use of non-physiological materials and naturally derived compounds for advanced sperm preparation methods. Here, sperm cells were exposed during capacitation to MoS2/Catechin nanoflakes and catechin (CT), a flavonoid with antioxidant properties, at concentrations of 10, 1, 0.1 ppm. The results showed no significant differences in terms of sperm membrane modifications or biochemical pathways among the groups, allowing the hypothesis that MoS2/CT nanoflakes do not induce any negative effect on the parameters evaluated related to sperm capacitation. Moreover, the addition of CT alone at a specific concentration (0.1 ppm) increased the spermatozoa fertilizing ability in an IVF assay by increasing the number of fertilized oocytes with respect to the control group. Our findings open interesting new perspectives regarding the use of catechins and new materials obtained using natural or bio compounds, which could be used to implement the current strategies for sperm capacitation.

Abstract
A new sustainable route to nanodispersed and functionalized carbon black in water phase (W-CB) is proposed. The sonochemical strategy exploits ultrasounds to disaggregate the CB, while two selected functional naturally derived compounds, sodium cholate (SC) and rosmarinic acid (RA), act as stabilizing agents ensuring dispersibility in water adhering onto the CB nanoparticles’ surface. Strategically, the CB-RA compound is used to drive the AuNPs self-assembling at room temperature, resulting in a CB surface that is nanodecorated; further, this is achieved without the need for additional reagents. Electrochemical sensors based on the proposed nanomaterials are realized and characterized both morphologically and electrochemically. The W-CBs’ electroanalytical potential is proved in the anodic and cathodic window using caffeic acid (CF) and hydroquinone (HQ), two antioxidant compounds that are significant for food and the environment. For both antioxidants, repeatable (RSD ≤ 3.3%; n = 10) and reproducible (RSD ≤ 3.8%; n = 3) electroanalysis results were obtained, achieving nanomolar detection limits (CF: 29 nM; HQ: 44 nM). CF and HQ are successfully determined in food and environmental samples (recoveries 97–113%), and also in the presence of other phenolic classes and HQ structural isomers. The water dispersibility of the proposed materials can be an opportunity for (bio) sensor fabrication and sustainable device realization.

Abstract
The outstanding electronic properties of carbon black (CB) and its economic advantages have fueled its application as nanostructured electrode material for the development of new electrochemical sensors and biosensors. CB-based electrochemical sensing devices have been found to exhibit high surface area, fast charge transfer kinetics, and excellent functionalization. In the present work, we set forth a comprehensive review of the recent advances made in the development and application of CB-based electrochemical devices for pharmaceutical and biomedical analyses - from quantitative monitoring of drug formulations to clinical diagnoses - and the underlying challenges and constraints that need to be overcome. We also present a thorough discussion about the strategies and techniques employed in the development of new electrochemical sensing platforms and in the enhancement of their analytical properties and biocompatibility for anchoring active biomolecules, as well as the combination of these sensing devices with other materials aiming at boosting the performance and efficiency of the sensors.

Abstract
In this work, a redox-graphene (Rx-Gr) film with electron-mediating ability has been integrated into a modular flexible pocket device, giving rise to a reusable biosensing platform. The Rx-Gr has been obtained in water from graphite taking advantage of catechin, a redox-antioxidant, able to assist the sonochemical layered-material exfoliation, conferring electron mediating feature. A film composed exclusively of Rx-Gr has been transferred via thermal rolling onto a flexible PET-support that was used as the biosensor base. The biosensing platform, composed of office-grade materials, was then fabricated using a cutter-plotter and assembled by thermal lamination; an interchangeable paper-based strip was used to host the enzymatic reaction and drive the capillary flow. An acetylcholinesterase-based inhibition assay has been optimized onboard the pocket device to determine chlorpyriphos, a widespread environmental pesticide. The proposed set-up allows the determination of chlorpyriphos at low overpotential (0.2 V) with satisfactory sensitivity (LOD = 0.2 ppb), thanks to the straightforward electroactivity of the Rx-Gr film towards thiocholine (enzymatic product). The modular design allows 5 consecutive complete inhibition assays (control + inhibition measure) retaining the performance (RSD = 5.4%; n = 5). The coupling of bench-top technologies and a new functional graphene film resulted in the development of a cost-effective, reusable, transportable, and within everyone's reach biosensing platform.

Abstract
A new green and effective sonochemical liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) is proposed wherein a flavonoid compound, catechin (CT), promotes the formation of conductive, redox-active, water-phase stable graphene nanoflakes (GF). To maximize the GF-CT redox activity, the CT concentration and sonication time have been studied, and the best performing nanomaterial-fraction selected. Physicochemical and electrochemical methods have been employed to characterize the morphological, structural, and electrochemical features of the GF-CT nanoflakes. The obtained GF intercalated with CT exhibits fully reversible electrochemistry (ΔEp = 28 mV, ipa/ipc = ⁓1) because of the catecholic adducts. GF-CT-integrated electrochemistry was generated directly during LPE of graphite, with no need of graphene oxide production, nor activation steps, electropolymerization, or ex-post functionalization. The GF-CT electro-mediator ability has been proven towards hydrazine (HY) and β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by simply drop-casting the redox-material onto screen-printed electrodes. GF-CT-based electrodes by using amperometry exhibited high sensitivity and extended linear ranges (HY: LOD = 0.1 µM, L.R. 0.5-150 µM; NADH: LOD = 0.6 µM, L.R. 2.5-200 µM) at low overpotential (+ 0.15 V) with no electrode fouling. The GF-CT electrodes are performing significantly better than commercial graphite electrodes and graphene nanoflakes exfoliated with a conventional surfactant, such as sodium cholate. Recoveries of 94-107% with RSD ≤ 8% (n = 3) for determination of HY and NADH in environmental and biological samples were achieved, proving the material functionality also in challenging analytical media. The presented GF-CT is a new functional redox-active material obtainable with a single-pot sustainable strategy, exhibiting standout properties particularly prone to (bio)sensors and cutting-edge device development.

Abstract
Because of numerous inherent and unique characteristics of phytochemicals as bioactive compounds derived from plants, they have been widely used as one of the most interesting nature-based compounds in a myriad of fields. Moreover, a wide variety of phytochemicals offer a plethora of fascinating optical and electrochemical features that pave the way toward their development as optical and electrochemical (bio)sensors for clinical/health diagnostics, environmental monitoring, food quality control, and bioimaging. In the current review, we highlight how phytochemicals have been tailored and used for a wide variety of optical and electrochemical (bio)sensing and bioimaging applications, after classifying and introducing them according to their chemical structures. Finally, the current challenges and future directions/perspective on the optical and electrochemical (bio)sensing applications of phytochemicals are discussed with the goal of further expanding their potential applications in (bio)sensing technology. Regarding the advantageous features of phytochemicals as highly promising and potential biomaterials, we envisage that many of the existing chemical-based (bio)sensors will be replaced by phytochemical-based ones in the near future.

Abstract
An exponential increase of scientific works dealing with the use of polyphenol-rich 'natural products' for the synthesis of bioactive AgNPs is in progress. However, a lack of fundamental studies on phytochemical compounds involved, and their role is evident. In this work, a comprehensive study of the antifungal performances of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized exclusively with phenolic compounds (PCs) with different structures and different antioxidant capacity is presented. The experimental hypothesis is that AgNPs@PCs produced with different PCs can exert different toxicity. In particular, di-hydroxylic and tri-hydroxylic phenolic acids (caffeic acid and gallic acid) and flavonoids (catechin and myricetin) were compared. A room temperature rapid and simple AgNPs synthesis was carefully optimized, obtaining stable and reproducible colloids. AgNPs@PCs suspensions were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, ς-potential, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. AgNPs@PCs radical scavenging capacity was also assessed. Finally, the AgNPs@PCs antifungal effect was tested against Aspergillus niger, particularly on spore germination and mycelial growth. The different antifungal activity was attributed to the different PCs' ability to generate/stabilize AgNPs with different shells, residual antioxidant capacity, and capacity to interact and aggregate during their 'attack' to A. niger hyphae. This work paves the way for the rational use of PCs and PCs rich-products for AgNPs-based applications.

Abstract
A novel benchtop approach to fabricate xurography-enabled thermally transferred (XTT) carbon nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors is proposed. Filtered nanomaterial (NM) films were transferred from Teflon filters to polyethylene terephthalate-ethylene vinyl acetate (PET-EVA) substrates by a temperature-driven approach. Customized PET-EVA components were xurographically patterned by a cutting plotter. The smart design of PET-EVA films enabled us to selectively transfer the nanomaterial to the exposed EVA side of the substrate. Hence, the substrate played an active role in selectively controlling where nanomaterial transfer occurred allowing us to design different working electrode geometries. Counter and reference electrodes were integrated by a stencil-printing approach, and the whole device was assembled by thermal lamination. To prove the versatility of the technology, XTT materials were exclusively made of carbon black (XTT-CB), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (XTT-MWCNTs), and single-walled carbon nanotubes (XTT-SWCNTs). Their electrochemical behavior was carefully studied and was found to be highly dependent on the amount and type of NM employed. XTT-SWCNTs were demonstrated to be the best-performing sensors, and they were employed for the determination of l-tyrosine (l-Tyr) in human plasma from tyrosinemia-diagnosed patients. High analytical performance toward l-Tyr (linear range of 0.5-100 μM, LOD = 0.1 μM), interelectrode precision (RSD ip,a = 3%, n = 10; RSD calibration slope = 4%, n = 3), and accurate l-Tyr quantification in plasma samples with low relative errors (≤7%) compared to the clinical declared values were obtained. The proposed benchtop approach is cost-effective and straightforward, does not require sophisticated facilities, and can be potentially employed to develop pure or hybrid nanomaterial-based electrodes.

Abstract
Cocoa beans are the main raw material for the manufacture of chocolate and are currently gaining great importance due to their antioxidant potential attributed to the total phenolic content (TPC) and the monomeric flavan-3-ols (epicatechin and catechin). The objective of this study was to determine the degradation kinetics parameters of TPC, epicatechin, and catechin during the roasting process of Criollo cocoa for 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 min at 90, 110, 130, 150, 170, 190, and 200 °C. The results showed a lower degradation of TPC (10.98 ± 6.04%) and epicatechin (8.05 ± 3.01%) at 130 °C and 10 min of roasting, while a total degradation of epicatechin and a 92.29 ± 0.06% degradation of TPC was obtained at 200 °C and 50 min. Reaction rate constant (k) and activation energy (Ea) were 0.02–0.10 min−1 and 24.03 J/mol for TPC and 0.02–0.13 min−1 and 22.51 J/mol for epicatechin, respectively. Degradation kinetics of TPC and epicatechin showed first-order reactions, while the catechin showed patterns of formation and degradation.
