Abstract
A sensor for non-enzymatic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection was developed based on silicon quantum dots (SiQDs). The fluorescent SiQDs were synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method. The SiQDs were made water-soluble and pH-stable by covering their surfaces with amino and hydroxyl groups. Additionally, the prepared SiQDs had a large Stokes shift (131 nm), excellent photostability (442 min), and hypotoxicity (e.g., 99% cell viability was retained after a 24 h-treatment at 8.0 mg mL-1 of SiQDs). The dynamic quenching effect induced by H2O2 effectively suppresses the blue fluorescence of SiQDs. Under the optimum conditions, the SiQD-based H2O2 sensor exhibited a wide linear range (10-1000 μM), high sensitivity and selectivity, and good anti-interference ability. The detection limit and relative standard deviation were 1.7 μM and 4.5% (c = 20 μM, n = 7), respectively. Accordingly, a simple, enzyme-free, and highly efficient method was established for detecting H2O2 in aqueous solutions. Moreover, this eco-friendly fluorescent sensor successfully determined the H2O2 concentration in human serum samples with 92.0-102.4% recoveries.

Abstract
Mercury ion (Hg2+) pose a significant hazard to the natural environment. Conventional techniques like Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, among others, pose some disadvantages as they demand a lot of money, need trained employees, and cannot provide on-site detection in real-time. A smartphone sensing technique based on silicon quantum dots (Si-QDs) was presented to detect Hg2+ in the environment without the usage of sophisticated equipment. Meanwhile, the technology was built by utilizing a smartphone to capture gray values of fluorescent images of the Si-QDs-Hg2+ system. Microwave-assisted Si-QDs with tiny particle size, high fluorescence, and good optical stability were created. The fluorescence of the Si-QDs was gradually quenched by raising the Hg2+ concentration from 0.5 μmol/L to 5.0 μmol/L for fluorescent detection with a detection limit of 28 nmol/L. The 94.8-97.1 % recovery demonstrated the viability of the Si-QDs approach for detecting Hg2+. Meanwhile, a smartphone sensing strategy was built by recording the gray value of the fluorescent images of the Si-QDs-Hg2+ systems using a smartphone, and the detection limit of the established approach was 3 nmol/L. The accuracy and reliability of the smartphone strategy were verified with the recovery rates of 80.3-92.5 % in tap water and 87.6-109 % in river water. Electron transfer quenching mechanism between Si-QDs and Hg2+ was evidenced by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, fluorescent decay curves, cyclic voltammetry, and Zeta potential. Finally, the suggested approach was used to detect Hg2+ in water samples from various environments.

Abstract
The development of biosensors mediated by synergistic quenching effect is of great significance for rapid and accurate clinical diagnosis. Hence, we prepared a cyan-emitting fluorescent Si dots for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) detection through the synergistic quenching effect of inner filter effect (IFE) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET). Si dots were prepared by microwave-assisted method, which displayed high quantum yield (28.7%), as well as good physiochemical properties, such as photo-stability, pH stability, and chemical stability. As the hydrolysate of 4-nitrophenyl phosphate disodium salt hexahydrate catalyzed by ALP, both IFE and PET of 4-nitrophenyl to Si dots were used for the turn-off mode detection of ALP. The linear relationships were established between the change of fluorescence intensity and ALP concentration in the range of 0.05 U L-1 to 5.0 U L-1, and 5.0 U L-1 to 80.0 U L-1, respectively. The detection limit was 0.01 U L-1. The synergistic quenching effect caused the turn-off mode detection to be more sensitive, and it can also be used for the accurate detection of ALP in human serum, thereby showing great anti-interference ability in complex environments.

Abstract
Herein, a novel ionic fluorescent probe for mercury(II) detection is presented consisting of a functional quinoline-based IL. Interestingly, the probe displayed high sensitivity (0.8 nM) and selectivity through the regulation function of electrostatic attraction, where its performance was significantly superior to that of quinoline probes without negative charge. Furthermore, the probe was found to exhibit two different fluorescent signals and colorimetric signals in the presence of different concentrations of mercury(II), which was consistent with the reaction mechanisms of the generation of large conjugated systems and the formation of anion-mercury(II) complexes. Moreover, this probe could be further loaded on a simple filter paper to serve as a visual paper sensor due to its adequate response time of less than 5 s. This regulation function strategy of electrostatic attraction has excellent potential for use in the precise detection of targeted analytes in real complex samples with improved accuracy and selectivity.

Abstract
Yellow fluorescent silicon quantum dots (y-SiQDs) with 22.2% fluorescence quantum yield were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method using 3-glycidoxypropyl triethoxysilane (GOTS) and m-aminophenol. The excitation wavelength is 550 nm with an emission wavelength of 574 nm, which effectively avoids the interference of biological autofluorescence. Notably, the synthesis approach does not require any post-modification and the y-SiQDs can be directly used for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) quantification due to static quenching. It exhibits high sensitivity and excellent selectivity for H2S with a 0.2-10 μM (R2 = 0.9953) linear range and detection limit of 54 nM. y-SiQDs have excellent stability and biocompatibility and can be used for H2S imaging in living cells and onion tissues.

Abstract
With the development of nanotechnology, fluorescent silicon nanomaterials have been synthesized and applied in various areas. Among them, silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) are a new class of zero-dimensional nanomaterials with outstanding optical properties, benign biocompatibility, and ultra-small size. In recent years, SiQDs have been gradually utilized for constructing high-performance fluorescent sensors for chemical or biological analytes. Herein, we focus on reviewing recent advances in SiQD-based fluorescent biosensors from a broad perspective and discussing possible future trends. First, the representative progress for synthesizing water-soluble SiQDs in the past decade is systematically summarized. Then, the latest achievement of the design and fabrication of SiQD-based fluorescent biosensors is introduced, with a particular focus on analyte-induced photoluminescence (fluorescence) changes, hybrids of SiQDs with other materials or molecules, and biological ligand-modification methods. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of this field are highlighted.

Abstract
Mercury contamination is a major environmental concern. In this work, we used a cleavable phosphorothioate (PS) fluorescence probe quenched by UiO-66-NH2 to develop a "signal-on" fluorescent biosensor for Hg2+ detection. The probe was bound to UiO-66-NH2 through π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding, thereby extinguishing the fluorescence of the FAM-labelled probe. The PS site was cleaved in the presence of Hg2+, releasing the FAM group and significantly enhancing the fluorescence signal. The intensity of the fluorescence linearly rose as the Hg2+ concentration increased in the range of 1-100 nM (R2 = 0.994), and the limit of detection was 0.118 nM (S/N = 3). This biosensor demonstrated high selectivity for Hg2+ and was effectively applied to quantification of Hg2+ in various water samples with acceptable recovery rates. These results suggest that this practical, straightforward technology is a good option for monitoring mercury ions in the environment.

Abstract
Sulfhydryl functionalized silicon quantum dots (S-SiQDs) with a fluorescence quantum yield of 38.5% were synthesized using 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and m-phenylenediamine by a simple one-pot method. It is worth noting that by oxidizing the surface sulfhydryl groups and statically quenching, the fluorescence of S-SiQDs at 492 nm (excitation at 383 nm) can be selectively quenched by hypochlorite (ClO-) in a linear range of 0.05 to 1.8 μM with a low detection limit of 13 nM. The reaction was completed in 10 s with no interference from other ROS, metal ions, anions and reducing species. The silicon source containing sulfhydryl groups was used to synthesize silicon quantum dots for the first time, and the surface of the S-SiQDs was provided with sulfhydryl groups and reacted rapidly and sensitively with ClO-. The S-SiQDs have good photostability and biocompatibility, and can be further used for ClO- imaging in MCF-7 cells and zebrafish, showing great promise in biological imaging. The proposed assay demonstrates that 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane is a good choice to obtain a functionalized fluorescent nanoprobe for redox species.

Abstract
Potassium ferricyanide (K3 [Fe (CN)6 ]) could directly oxidize silicon quantum dots (Si QDs) to generate chemiluminescence (CL) under alkaline condition. It was noteworthy that in the Si QDs-K3 [Fe (CN)6 ]-NaOH CL system, the Si QDs worked as a new luminescent material. Besides, the signal intensity of this CL system could be weaken with the addition of uric acid (UA). Based on these, we exploited a new painless and convenient determination method of UA. This method only needed to filter and dilute the UA, without other pretreatment. The constructed system exhibited a linear relationship ranged from 0.50 to 4.50 mmol·L-1 , with 0.24 mmol·L-1 of detection limit, and this system had been successfully demonstrated the detection of UA in human urine. Meanwhile, this work had also broaden the application of the Si QDs in CL research.

Abstract
Efficient preconcentration is critical for sensitive and selective electrochemical detection of metal ions, but rapid specific enrichment with depressed absorption of interfering ions at the electrode is challenging. Here, we proposed an electric field-induced specific preconcentration to boost the analytical performance of DNA-based electrochemical sensors for Hg2+ detection. As for such preconcentration, a positive external electric field was first used to enrich Hg2+ at an electrode assembled with T-rich DNA, thus boosting T-Hg2+-T recognitions. The following applied inverse electric field strips the nonspecifically absorbed Hg2+ and other interfering ions, thus depressing matrix interferences via self-cleaning. Based on this principle, we designed a portable device to realize programmable control of electric fields; a T-Hg2+-T recognition-based electrochemical sensor was thus fabricated as a model platform to assess the feasibility of electric field-induced preconcentration. The experimental results revealed that such a strategy decreased the time of T-Hg2+-T-based recognition from 60 to 20 min and led to detection with better reproducibility by depressing the influence of free Hg2+ as well as interfering ions. This strategy offered Hg2+ detection limits of 0.01 pM─three-fold better than that without preconcentration─within 22 min. The proposed preconcentration strategy offers a new way to enhance the analytical performance of sensing at the solid-liquid interface.

Abstract
We have presented a hydrothermal approach for synthesizing fluorescent silicon nanoparticles (F-SiNPs) with yellow-green emission. The obtained F-SiNPs exhibited excellent stability and good biocompatibility. By virtue of the specific reaction between S2- and 5,5'-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB), colorimetric assay of S2- was realized with a good linear range of 0-100 μM. The colorimetric detection system could be further combined with F-SiNPs to construct a probe for fluorescence turn-off sensing S2- in aqueous solution due to inner filter effect. In the fluorescent detection system, a good linearity with S2- concentration in the range of 0-50 μM was accomplished. And as low as 0.1 μM S2- was successfully detected. Moreover, the F-SiNPs displayed low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, and was further utilized for cell imaging. These results demonstrated the promising applications of F-SiNPs in S2- analysis and bioimaging.
