Nano-Micron Combined Hydrogel Microspheres: Novel Answer for Minimal Invasive Biomedical Applications

Hydrogels, key in biomedical research for their hydrophilicity and versatility, have evolved with hydrogel microspheres (HMs) of micron-scale dimensions, enhancing their role in minimally invasive therapeutic delivery, tissue repair, and regeneration. The recent emergence of nanomaterials has ushered in a revolutionary transformation in the biomedical field, which demonstrates tremendous potential in targeted therapies, biological imaging, and disease diagnostics. Consequently, the integration of advanced nanotechnology promises to trigger a new revolution in the realm of hydrogels. HMs loaded with nanomaterials combine the advantages of both hydrogels and nanomaterials, which enables multifaceted functionalities such as efficient drug delivery, sustained release, targeted therapy, biological lubrication, biochemical detection, medical imaging, biosensing monitoring, and micro-robotics. Here, this review comprehensively expounds upon commonly used nanomaterials and their classifications. Then, it provides comprehensive insights into the raw materials and preparation methods of HMs. Besides, the common strategies employed to achieve nano-micron combinations are summarized, and the latest applications of these advanced nano-micron combined HMs in the biomedical field are elucidated. Finally, valuable insights into the future design and development of nano-micron combined HMs are provided.

Non-contact monitoring of glucose concentration and pH by integration of wearable and implantable hydrogel sensors with optical coherence tomography

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging technique with large penetration depth into the tissue, but limited chemical specificity. By incorporating functional co-monomers, hydrogels can be designed to respond to specific molecules and undergo reversible volume changes. In this study, we present implantable and wearable biocompatible hydrogel sensors combined with OCT to monitor their thickness change as a tool for continuous and real-time monitoring of glucose concentration and pH. The results demonstrate the potential of combining hydrogel biosensors with OCT for non-contact continuous in-vivo monitoring of physiological parameters.

The microspheres/hydrogels scaffolds based on the proteins, nucleic acids, or polysaccharides composite as carriers for tissue repair: A review

There are many studies on specific macromolecules and their contributions to tissue repair. Macromolecules have supporting and protective effects in organisms and can help regrow, reshape, and promote self-repair and regeneration of damaged tissues. Macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides, can be constructed into hydrogels for the preparation of slow-release drug agents, carriers for cell culture, and platforms for gene delivery. Hydrogels and microspheres are fabricated by chemical crosslinking or mixed co-deposition often used as scaffolds, drug carriers, or cell culture matrix, provide proper mechanical support and nutrient delivery, a well-conditioned environment that to promote the regeneration and repair of damaged tissues. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in the construction of macromolecules into hydrogels and microspheres based on the proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides and other polymer and their application in tissue repair. We then discuss the latest research trends regarding the advantages and disadvantages of these composites in repair tissue. Further, we examine the applications of microspheres/hydrogels in different tissue repairs, such as skin tissue, cartilage, tumor tissue, synovial, nerve tissue, and cardiac repair. The review closes by highlighting the challenges and prospects of microspheres/hydrogels composites.

Micromolding-Assisted Production of SERS-Active Microcylinders for Size- and Charge-Selective Molecular Detection

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an effective technique for amplifying the Raman signal of molecules by using metal nanostructures. However, these metal surfaces are susceptible to contamination by undesirable adhesives in complex mixtures, typically necessitating a time-consuming and costly sample pretreatment. In order to circumvent this, metal nanoparticles have been uniformly embedded within microgels by using microfluidics. In this work, we introduce a simple, scalable micromolding method for creating SERS-active cylindrical microgels designed to eliminate the need for pretreatment. These microcylinders are created through the simultaneous photoreduction and photo-cross-linking of precursor solutions. These solutions are optimized for consistent, high-intensity Raman signals as well as molecular size and charge selectivity. A sequential micromolding method is employed to design dual-compartment microcylinders, offering additional functionalities such as optical encoding, magnetoresponsiveness, and dual-charge selectivity. These SERS-active microcylinders provide robust Raman signals of small molecules, even in the presence of adhesive proteins, without compromising sensitivity. To demonstrate this capability, we directly detect pyocyanin in saliva and tartrazine in whole milk without any need for sample pretreatment.
