Abstract
Carbon nanofillers in general and graphene in particular are considered as promising potential candidates in catalysis due to their two-dimensional (2D) nature, zero bandwidth, single atom thickness with a promising high surface area: volume ratio. Additionally, graphene oxide via result of tunable electrical properties has also been developed as a catalytic support for metal and metal oxide nanofillers. Moreover, the possession of higher chemical stability followed by ultrahigh thermal conductivity plays a prominent role in promoting higher reinforcement of catalytically active sites. In this review we have started with an overview of carbon nanofillers as catalyst support, their main characteristics and applications for their use in heterogeneous catalysis. The review article also critically focusses on the catalytic properties originating from both functional groups as well as doping. An in-depth literature on the various reaction catalysed by metal oxide based nanoparticles supported on GO/rGO has also been incorporated with a special focus on the overall catalytic efficiency with respect to graphene contribution. The future research prospective in the aforementioned field has also been discussed.

Abstract
An efficient metal-free single-step protocol has been developed for the direct synthesis of flavones from 2-hydroxyacetophenone and substituted benzaldehydes. This chemical transformation is exclusively promoted by the iodonium-triiodide ion couple formed through iodine and PEG-400 complexation. The triiodide anion not only helps in the abstraction of a proton from the acetophenone but also promotes the cyclization of intermediate chalcone to the corresponding flavones. The flavones were obtained in very high yields without using any toxic metal catalysts or harsh reaction conditions. The reaction mechanism was established through a series of test reactions and entrapping of reaction intermediates. The developed protocol provides direct access to flavones in high yields under milder reaction conditions with great substrate compatibility, including hydroxylated derivatives.

Abstract
The [4 + 2] annulation of β-formyl ketones with an indole has been developed for the regioselective synthesis of diphenyl-substituted carbazoles in the presence of a catalytic amount of iodine. The 1,4-dicarbonyl compound containing a phenyl group at the α-position of an aldehyde group reacts more readily with indoles to form carbazole derivatives. Using this method, a variety of carbazole derivatives can be readily accessed under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
We report herein an efficient polyphosphoric acid (PPA) promoted one-pot protocol for the synthesis of flavanone derivatives from 2-hydroxyacetophenones and benzaldehydes. A variety of flavanones were produced in moderate to excellent yields and evaluated for their neuroprotective effects against N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA)-induced excitotoxicity in PC12 cells. Derivatives bearing electron-donating groups exhibited better neuroprotective activity. Compound 3m demonstrated the best protective potency and reversed the intracellular calcium (Ca2+) influx caused by NMDA, suggesting that flavanones protected the PC12 cells against NMDA-induced neurotoxicity via inhibition of Ca2+ overload.

Synthesis and Investigation of Flavanone Derivatives as Potential New Anti-Inflammatory Agents. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27061781. Abstract
Flavonoids are polyphenols with broad known pharmacological properties. A series of 2,3-dihydroflavanone derivatives were thus synthesized and investigated for their anti-inflammatory activities. The target flavanones were prepared through cyclization of 2'-hydroxychalcone derivatives, the later obtained by Claisen-Schmidt condensation. Since nitric oxide (NO) represents an important inflammatory mediator, the effects of various flavanones on the NO production in the LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophage were assessed in vitro using the Griess test. The most active compounds were flavanone (4G), 2'-carboxy-5,7-dimethoxy-flavanone (4F), 4'-bromo-5,7-dimethoxy-flavanone (4D), and 2'-carboxyflavanone (4J), with IC50 values of 0.603, 0.906, 1.030, and 1.830 µg/mL, respectively. In comparison, pinocembrin achieved an IC50 value of 203.60 µg/mL. Thus, the derivatives synthesized in this work had a higher NO inhibition capacity compared to pinocembrin, demonstrating the importance of pharmacomodulation to improve the biological potential of natural molecules. SARs suggested that the use of a carboxyl-group in the meta-position of the B-ring increases biological activity, whereas compounds carrying halogen substituents in the para-position were less active. The addition of methoxy-groups in the meta-position of the A-ring somewhat decreased the activity. This study successfully identified new bioactive flavanones as promising candidates for the development of new anti-inflammatory agents.

Abstract
Structural derivatization of natural products has been a continuing and irreplaceable source of novel drug leads. Natural phenols are a broad category of natural products with wide pharmacological activity and have offered plenty of clinical drugs. However, the structural complexity and wide variety of natural phenols leads to the difficulty of structural derivatization. Skeleton analysis indicated most types of natural phenols can be structured by the combination and extension of three common fragments containing phenol, phenylpropanoid and benzoyl. Based on these fragments, the derivatization strategies of natural phenols were unified and comprehensively analyzed in this review. In addition to classical methods, advanced strategies with high selectivity, efficiency and practicality were emphasized. Total synthesis strategies of typical fragments such as stilbenes, chalcones and flavonoids were also covered and analyzed as the supplementary for supporting the diversity-oriented derivatization of natural phenols.

Abstract
A series of novel quinoline derivatives (6-phenyl-6H-chromeno[4,3-b]quinoline) have been
prepared by using 4-chloro-2-phenyl-2H-chromene-3-carbaldehyde and various substituted isocyanides
as starting materials in the presence of HClO4-SiO2 and Methanol. We screened eighteen compounds
of this novel series (6a-r) in six different cancer cell lines (A549 (lung cancer cells), DU145 (prostate
cancer cells), PC3 (prostate cancer cells), MCF7 (lung cancer cells), HT 29, HCT 116 (colon cancer
cells). Most of the compounds showed anti-cancer activity and compound 6b showed good cytotoxicity
IC50 = 2.61±0.34 μM against colon cancer on HT29 cell line among all. The key property of cell migration
was observed while treatment cells with 6b. Apoptosis in HT29 cells confirmed by annexin V
staining, acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB), DAPI, induced by 6b. This method is operationally
simple and works with a diverse range of substrates. These results indicate the anticancer potential
of these series and warrants future investigations for further anticancer drug development.

Abstract
The broomrapes (Orobanche and Phelipanche spp.) and witchweeds (Striga spp.) are a class of parasitic weeds, which are distributed widely in the tropical, subtropical, and temperate areas of the globe. Since they have completely consistent lifecycles with the host plants, it is difficult to control them selectively through using the conventional herbicides. Inducing suicidal germination of these weed seeds by small molecular signaling agents proved to be a promising strategy for the management of parasitic weeds. As a class of naturally occurring terpenoid metabolites, strigolactones (SLs) show significant biological activities including stimulation germination of weed seeds, inhibition of shoot-branching, and so on. However, the widespread application of these natural SLs is greatly limited by their extremely low natural abundance and complex molecular structures. Design and synthesis of the simplified analogues as natural SLs alternatives provide a viable avenue for the efficient control of these parasitic weeds. We herein disclose the development of a novel class of SLs analogues derived from dihydroflavonoids as potent seed germinators of parasitic weeds. It was shown that one of them displayed a higher potential toward the seed germination of the broomrapes than the positive control GR24. The structure-activity relationship of these SLs analogues was further validated on the basis of the binding affinity experiment to strigolactone receptor protein HTL7 by using a YLG fluorescent probe method.

Abstract
A catalyst-free one-pot synthetic methodology was developed for the preparation of 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithione derivatives through three-component reactions of arylaldehydes, thiourea, and orthoformates. The procedure tolerated a diverse range of arylaldehydes and orthoformates and provided a rapid entry to a variety of 4-aryl-6-(alkylthio)-3,4-dihydro-1,3,5-triazine-2(1H)-thiones (29 examples). The synthetic strategy relies on the dual role of thiourea in the cyclization with the aldehydes and the alkylation via an intermediate imidate formation. The structures of 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithione derivatives were characterized by spectroscopic techniques as well as by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The Heck-oxyarylation of racemic 2-(1-naphthyl)- and 2-(2-naphthyl)-2H-chromene derivatives were carried out resulting diastereoselectively in (6S*,6aR*,11aR*)-6-(1-naphthyl)- and 6-(2-naphthyl)-pterocarpans as major products and bridged (6R*,12R*)-6,12-methanodibenzo[d,g][1,3]dioxocine derivatives as minor products. Antiproliferative activity of two 6-naphthylpterocarpans was identified by MTT assay against A2780 and WM35 human cancer cell lines with low micromolar IC50 values. The measured 0.80 and 3.51 μM IC50 values of the (6S*,6aR*,11aR*)-6-(1-naphthyl)pterocarpan derivative with 8,9-methylenedioxy substitution represent the best activities in the pterocarpan family. Enantiomers of the pterocarpan and dioxocine derivatives and their chiral 2-naphthylchroman-4-one and 2-naphthyl-2H-chromene precursors were separated by HPLC using chiral stationary phase. HPLC-ECD spectra were recorded and absolute configuration and low-energy solution conformations were determined by TDDFT-ECD calculations. Characteristic ECD transitions of the separated enantiomers were correlated with their absolute configuration.

Abstract
In this paper, an easy-operational, high-yielding method for the gram-scale synthesis of 3-sulfonyl flavanones is described by a one-pot straightforward POCl3 mediated intermolecular (5 + 1) annulation of the β-ketosulfones with an o-hydroxyaryl group (dual nucleophile) and arylaldehydes (dual electrophile) in refluxing toluene for 3 h. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed. This protocol provides a highly effective annulation via one carbon-oxygen (C-O) and one carbon-carbon (C-C) bond formations.

Abstract
An efficient, green, and sustainable synthesis of new hybrid molecules containing flavanone with triazole by merging the Michael addition and Click reaction using a copper oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite in one pot is reported. The catalyst can easily be recycled and reused in seven consecutive runs without compromising the product yields. Other notable advantages include using water as a reaction medium and obtaining good to excellent yields, low catalyst loading, high atom efficiency, high substrate variation, and good results in the gram scale reaction.

Abstract
Photoredox catalysis has experienced a revitalized interest from the synthesis community during the past decade. For example, photoredox/Ni dual catalysis protocols have been developed to overcome several inherent limitations of palladium-catalyzed cross-couplings by invoking a single-electron transmetalation pathway. This Perspective highlights advances made by our laboratory since the inception of the photoredox/Ni cross-coupling of benzyltrifluoroborates with aryl bromides. In addition to broadening the scope of trifluoroborate coupling partners, research using readily oxidized hypervalent silicates as radical precursors that demonstrate functional group compatibility is highlighted. The pursuit of electrophilic coupling partners beyond (hetero)aryl bromides has also led to the incorporation of several new classes of C(sp2)-hybridized substrates into light-mediated cross-coupling. Advances to expand the radical toolbox by utilizing feedstock chemicals (e.g., aldehydes) to access radicals that were previously inaccessible from trifluoroborates and silicates are also emphasized. Additionally, several organic photocatalysts have been investigated as replacements for their expensive iridium- and ruthenium-based counterparts. Lastly, the net C-H functionalization of the radical partner in an effort to improve atom economy is presented. An underlying theme in all of these studies is the value of generating radicals in a catalytic manner, rather than stoichiometrically.

Abstract

Utilizing
photoredox/nickel dual catalysis, diverse flavanones
have been synthesized by coupling novel 2-trifluoroboratochromanone
building blocks with aryl and heteroaryl bromide partners. The newly
reported trifluoroboratochromanones can be easily accessed
from the corresponding chromones on multigram scale. This represents
a general route for accessing natural and unnatural flavanones that
were previously formed through a synthetically more restrictive ring
closure route from chalcone precursors.

Abstract
A series of 1 H-thieno[2,3-c]chromen-4(2 H)-one derivatives were synthesised through Knoevenagel condensation of substituted flavanones with thiazolidine-2,4-dione in ethanol in the presence of piperidine. The mechanism of the reaction was proposed. All synthesised compounds were characterised by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS, and elemental analysis. The structure of 2-(3-chlorophenyl)-1 H-thieno[2,3- c]chromen-4(2 H)-one was confirmed by a single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. A preliminary antitumour screening showed that 2-(2-fluorophenyl)-1 H-thieno [2,3- c]chromen-4(2 H)-one had moderate to good activity against A549, BGC-823, HCT116 and MDA-MB-453 cancer cell lines, and 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-1 H-thieno[2,3- c]chromen-4(2 H)-one displayed similar activity against these four kinds of cancer cells compared with the reference drug.

Abstract
Two broad approaches for the syntheses of a series of 4-aminoflavanes are used in this study, and they have been prepared in 30-99% overall yields using the reductive condensation of flavanone with primary amine, as a key step. By this methodology, the formyl derivatives of several secondary amines were obtained in good to excellent yields. The structures of all new products have been confirmed by spectral experiences (IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR). However, the present non-stereoselective synthesis results in a mixture of 2-7: diastereomers, which differ from the configuration of the flavanone atom asymmetric center. Since each diastereomer may have different biological activity and pharmacokinetic profile, analytical methods have to be developed for their separation. The 4-aminoflavanes diastereomers were separated using polysaccharide chiral stationary phases columns consisting of cellulose (Chiralcel® OD-H and Chiralcel®OJ) by high-performance liquid chromatography; the separation was affected by the nature and concentration of the alcohol modifiers in the mobile phase. Separations were carried out under normal phase mode on the Chiralcel®OJ column. This method can properly separate the two diastereoisomers (Rs > 2) within an analysis time of <50 min.
