Is the term “Carbene” justified for remote N-heterocyclic carbenes (r-NHCs) and abnormal N-heterocyclic carbenes (aNHCs/MICs)?

Quantification of σ-Acceptor and π-Donor Stabilization in O, S and Hal Analogues of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes (NHCs) on the Magnetic Criterion

The spatial magnetic properties, through-space NMR shieldings (TSNMRSs), of stable O, S and Hal analogues of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been calculated using the GIAO perturbation method employing the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) concept and the results visualized as iso-chemical-shielding surfaces (ICSSs) of various sizes and directions. The TSNMRS values (actually the anisotropy effects measurable in ¹H NMR spectroscopy) are employed to qualify and quantify the position of the present mesomeric equilibria (carbenes ↔ ylides). The results are confirmed by geometry (bond angles and bond lengths), IR spectra, UV spectra, and ¹³C chemical shifts of the electron-deficient carbon centers.

A 2,2'-diphosphinotolane as a versatile precursor for the synthesis of P-ylidic mesoionic carbenes via reversible C-P bond formation

A metal-templated synthetic route to cyclic (aryl)(ylidic) mesoionic carbenes (CArY-MICs) featuring an endocyclic P-ylide is presented. This approach, which requires metal templates with two cis-positioned open coordination sites, is based on the controlled cyclisation of a P,P'-diisopropyl-substituted 2,2'-diphosphinotolane (1) and leads to chelate complexes coordinated by a phosphine donor and the CArY-MIC carbon atom. The C-P bond formation involved in the former partial cyclisation of 1 proceeds under mild conditions and was shown to be applicable all over the d-block. In the presence of a third fac-positioned open coordination site, the P-C bond formation was found to be reversible, as shown for a series of molybdenum complexes. DFT modelling studies are in line with an interpretation of the target compounds as CArY-MICs.

The Heck reaction of allylic alcohols catalysed by an N-heterocyclic carbene-Pd(ii) complex and toxicity of the ligand precursor for the marine benthic copepod Amphiascoides atopus

The palladium-catalysed reaction of aryl halides and allylic alcohols is an attractive method for obtaining α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones, which represent key intermediates in organic synthesis. In this context, a 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (aNHC)-based palladium(ii) complex formed in situ has been found to be a selective catalyst for the syntheses of building blocks from the corresponding aryl halides and allylic alcohols, with yields ranging from 50% to 90%. The lack of toxic effects of the ligand precursor (1,2,3-triazolium salt) of the palladium(ii) complex for the harpacticoid copepod Amphiascoides atopus allowed us to contrast the efficiency of the catalytic system with the potential impact of the principal waste chemical in global aquatic ecosystems, which has not been previously addressed.

A 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (aNHC)-based palladium(ii) complex formed in situ has been found to be an efficient catalyst in the formation of C–C bonds.

Bent Allenes or Di-1,3-betaines-An Answer Given on the Magnetic Criterion

The spatial magnetic properties, through-space NMR shieldings (TSNMRS), of bent allene 1, the corresponding C-extended 1,3-butadiene derivative 2, and a number of related compounds 3-20 have been calculated using the gauge-independent atomic orbital perturbation method, employing the nucleus-independent chemical shift concept and visualized as isochemical shielding surfaces of various sizes and directions. Prior to that, both structures and ¹³C chemical shifts were calculated and compared with available experimental bond lengths and δ(¹³C)/ppm values (also, as a quality criterion for the computed structures). Bond lengths, the δ(¹³C)/ppm, and the TSNMRS values are employed to qualify and quantify the electronic structure of the studied compounds in terms of dative or classical electron-sharing bonds.
