Bispidine Chelators for Radiopharmaceutical Applications with Lanthanide, Actinide, and Main Group Metal Ions

Octadentate and specifically nonadentate ligands with a bispidine scaffold (3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane) are known to be efficiently coordinated to a range of metal ions of interest in radiopharmaceutical chemistry and lead to exceedingly stable and inert complexes. Nonadentate bispidine L2 (with a tridentate bipyridine acetate appended to N3 and a picolinate at N7) has been shown before to be an ideal chelator for 111In3+, 177Lu3+, and 225Ac3+, nuclides of interest for diagnosis and therapy, and a proof-of-principle study with an SSTR2-specific octreotate has shown potential for theranostic applications. We now have extended these studies in two directions. First, we present ligand derivative L3, in which the bipyridine acetate is substituted with terpyridine, a softer donor for metal ions with a preference for more covalency. L3 did not fulfill the hopes because complexation is much less efficient. While for Bi3+ and Pb2+ the ligand is an excellent chelator with properties similar to those of L2, Lu3+ and La3+ show very slow and inefficient complexation with L3 in contrast to L2, and 225Ac3+ is not fully coordinated, even at an increased temperature (92% radiochemical yield at 80 °C, 60 min, [L3] = 10-4 M). These observations have led to a hypothesis for the complexation pathway that is in line with all of the experimental data and supported by a preliminary density functional theory analysis, which is important for the design of further optimized bispidine chelators. Second, the coordination chemistry of L2 has been extended to Bi3+, La3+, and Pb2+, including solid state and solution structural work, complex stabilities, radiolabeling, and radiostability studies. All complexes of this ligand (La3+, Ac3+, Lu3+, Bi3+, In3+, and Pb2+), including nuclides for targeted α therapy (TAT), single-photon emission computed tomography, and positron emission tomography, are formed efficiently under physiological conditions, i.e., suitable for the labeling of delicate biological vectors such as antibodies, and the complexes are very stable and inert. Importantly, for TAT with 225Ac, the daughter nuclides 213Bi and 209Pb also form stable complexes, and this is important for reducing damage to healthy tissue.

Chlorinated polyhedral selenaboranes revisited by joint experimental/computational efforts: the formation of closo-1-SeB9Cl9 and the crystal structure of closo-SeB11Cl11

The recent success in the formation of chlorinated telluraboranes and the reactivities of pnictogenaboranes prompted us to re-examine the vacuum co-pyrolysis of B2Cl4 with Se2Cl2 at various molar ratios and temperatures in order to search for the generation of other polyhedral selenaboranes than closo-SeB5Cl5 (1a) and closo-SeB11Cl11 (1b), the latter being observed earlier. Interestingly, a new compound with the elemental composition SeB9Cl9 (2) was detected, this time by high- and low-resolution mass spectrometry. Further characterization by 1- and 2-D 11B-NMR spectroscopy suggests that 2 should adopt a closed bicapped square-antiprismatic geometry with selenium at the apical position. Moreover, vacuum sublimation gave suitable crystals of 1b, which were subjected to single-crystal X-ray structure determination. Crystallographic data analysis confirmed that 1b, consistent with its 26 skeletal electron count, adopts a distorted icosahedral structure close to the symmetry of C5v. Computations at the DFT-D3 level have revealed that 33% of the total computed binding motifs in the grown 1b crystals are due to the very strong chalcogen bonding. Moreover, SAPT decomposition has shown that the bonding motifs in the crystals are stabilized mainly by dispersion and electrostatic terms. Homodecoupling and high resolution 11B NMR and 77Se NMR experiments have resolved both coupling constants 1J(11B11B) and 1J(77Se11B) as well as the 77Se chemical shift of 1a and 1b, which are in reasonable agreement with the corresponding computed values. The computed 11B chemical shifts of 2 were determined by the well-established DFT/GIAO/NMR structural tool based on its B3LYP/6-311+G** internal coordinates. They agree well with the experimental values and provide a good representation of the molecular structure of 2 in solution. The extraordinary downfield 11B NMR chemical shift of B(10) in 2 has been ascribed to the intensive paramagnetic contribution to the shielding tensor in this bicapped square-antiprismatic motif. Calculations of the synproportionation free energies of smaller (n - 1) closo-selenaboranes with larger-sized (n + 1) ones support the extraordinary stability of octahedral, bicapped square-antiprismatic and icosahedral closo motifs in the SeBnCln family (n = 4-12).

Reactivities of iron(IV)-oxido compounds with pentadentate bispidine ligands

The Fe^IVO complexes of bispidines (3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane derivatives) are known to be highly reactive oxidants - with the tetradentate bispidine, the so far most reactive ferryl complex has been reported and two isomeric pentadentate ligands also lead to very reactive high-valent oxidants. With a series of 4 new bispidine derivatives we now try to address the question why the bispidine scaffold in general leads to very reactive oxidants and how this can be tuned by ligand modifications. The study is based on a full structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical analysis of the iron(II) precursors, spectroscopic data of the iron(IV)-oxido complexes, a kinetic analysis of the stoichiometric oxidation of thioanisole by five different bispidine‑iron(IV)-oxido complexes and on product analyses of reactions by the five ferryl oxidants with thioanisole, β-methylstyrene and cis-stilbene as substrates.

Mn2+ Bispidine Complex Combining Exceptional Stability, Inertness, and MRI Efficiency

As an essential metal ion and an efficient relaxation agent, Mn²⁺ holds a great promise to replace Gd³⁺ in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent applications, if its stable and inert complexation can be achieved. Toward this goal, four pyridine and one carboxylate pendants have been introduced in coordinating positions on the bispidine platform to yield ligand L³. Thanks to its rigid and preorganized structure and perfect size match for Mn²⁺, L³ provides remarkably high thermodynamic stability (log K_MnL = 19.47), selectivity over the major biological competitor Zn²⁺ (log(K_MnL/K_ZnL) = 4.4), and kinetic inertness. Solid-state X-ray data show that [MnL³(MeOH)](OTf)₂ has an unusual eight-coordinate structure with a coordinated solvent molecule, in contrast to the six-coordinate structure of [ZnL³](OTf), underlining that the coordination cavity is perfectly adapted for Mn²⁺, while it is too large for Zn²⁺. In aqueous solution, ¹⁷O NMR data evidence one inner sphere water and dissociatively activated water exchange (k_ex²⁹⁸ = 13.5 × 10⁷ s^-1) for MnL³. Its water proton relaxivity (r₁ = 4.44 mM^-1 s^-1 at 25 °C, 20 MHz) is about 30% higher than values for typical monohydrated Mn²⁺ complexes, which is related to its larger molecular size; its relaxation efficiency is similar to that of clinically used Gd³⁺-based agents. In vivo MRI experiments realized in control mice at 0.02 mmol/kg injected dose indicate good signal enhancement in the kidneys and fast renal clearance. Taken together, MnL³ is the first chelate that combines such excellent stability, selectivity, inertness and relaxation properties, all of primary importance for MRI use.

Terminal N2 Dissociation in [(PNN)Fe(N2 )]2 (μ-N2 ) Leads to Local Spin-State Changes and Augmented Bridging N2 Activation

Nitrogen fixation at iron centres is a fundamental catalytic step for N₂ utilisation, relevant to biological (nitrogenase) and industrial (Haber-Bosch) processes. This step is coupled with important electronic structure changes which are currently poorly understood. We show here for the first time that terminal dinitrogen dissociation from iron complexes that coordinate N₂ in a terminal and bridging fashion leaves the Fe-N₂ -Fe unit intact but significantly enhances the degree of N₂ activation (Δν≈180 cm^-1 , Raman spectroscopy) through charge redistribution. The transformation proceeds with local spin state change at the iron centre (S= 1 / 2 ${{ 1/2 }}$ →S=³ /₂ ). Further dissociation of the bridging N₂ can be induced under thermolytic conditions, triggering a disproportionation reaction, from which the tetrahedral (PNN)₂ Fe could be isolated. This work shows that dinitrogen activation can be induced in the absence of external chemical stimuli such as reducing agents or Lewis acids.

Peri-Decoration of a Tetraazaperylene with Urea Units: Chiral Octaazaperopyrenedioxides (OAPPDOs) and Their Optical and Chiroptical Properties

Octaazaperopyrenedioxides (OAPPDOs) are a new class of fluorescent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons based on a tetraazaperylene core that is formally condensed with N-substituted urea units in the two opposite peri positions. Here, we report the synthesis of series of substituted OAPPDO derivatives with different N-substitution patterns (H, alkyl, benzyl) in the peri positions, including bay-chlorinated OAPPDOs. Starting from the latter, a series of bay-arylated OAPPDOs was synthesized by Suzuki cross coupling, which resulted in the formation of helically chiral OAPPDO derivatives. The electrochemical and photophysical properties were investigated by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry. The P and M enantiomers of a phenylated OAPPDO were separated by semipreparative HPLC and further analyzed by CD spectroscopy. The frontier orbital energies, the mechanism of the isomerization, the electronic excitation and the CD spectrum (TD-DFT) were computed and compared to the experimental data. The reversible 1e^- oxidation of the OAPPDOs generates the corresponding radical cations, one of which was characterized by EPR spectroscopy. The reversible oxidation process was also systematically investigated by spectro-electrochemistry.

Peri‐Functionalized Tetraazaperylenes: Strong Emitters for Molecular Polaritonics

The functionalization of the peri position of the bay chlorinated tetraazaperylene was investigated by varying the donor behavior of the substituents to assess the resulting photophysical and electrochemical properties. To accomplish this, electron donating alkyl- and arylsulfido substituents, methoxy and methyl groups were selectively introduced into the peri position via a nucleophilic aromatic substitution of the perchlorinated tetraazaperylene. Both the alkylated and benzylated thioethers displayed high fluorescence quantum yields of up to 80 %. Compounds from the latter group were integrated in resonant optical microcavities to achieve strong light-matter coupling. The formation of exciton-polaritons was observed by angle-dependent reflectivity and photoluminescence that could be tuned by variation of the concentration of the fluorophores and of the thickness of the cavity.

Metal-Ligand Cooperativity in Iron Dinitrogen Complexes: Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Disproportionation and an Anionic Fe(0)N2 Hydride

Metal-ligand cooperativity and redox-active ligands enable the use of open-shell first-row transition metals in catalysis. However, the fleeting nature of the reactive intermediates prevents direct inspection of the relevant catalytic species. By employing phosphine α-iminopyridine (PNN)-based complexes, we show that chemical and redox metal-ligand cooperativity can be combined in the coordination sphere of iron dinitrogen complexes. These systems show dual activation modes either through deprotonation, which triggers reversible core dearomatization, or through reversibly accepting one electron by reducing the imine functionality. (PNN)Fe(N₂) fragments can be obtained under mildly reducing conditions. Deprotonation of such complexes induces dearomatization of the pyridine core while retaining a terminally coordinated N₂ ligand. This species is nevertheless stable in solution only below -30 °C and undergoes unusual ligand-assisted redox disproportionation through proton-coupled electron transfer at room temperature. The origin of this phenomenon is the significant lability of the α-imine C-H bonds in the dearomatized species, where the calculated bond dissociation free energy is 48.7 kcal mol^-1. The dispropotionation reaction yields an overreduced iron compound, demonstrating that the formation of such species can be triggered by mild bases, and does not require harsh reducing agents. Reaction of the dearomatized species with dihydrogen yields a rare anionic Fe hydride that binds dinitrogen and features a rearomatized core.

Towards Nitrogen‐Rich N‐Heteropolycycles: Synthesis of Octaazaperopyrenes (OAPP)

Ortho substituted octaazaperopyrenes (OAPPs) are a new class of functional dyes characterized by their strong electron‐accepting behavior. Herein, the synthesis, as well as the electrochemical and photo physical properties of an OAPP dye, is reported. The OAPP target was prepared via selective nucleophilic substitution at the peri position of a bay chlorinated tetraazaperylene by introduction of four amino‐substituents. The resulting tetraminoperylene was reacted with different acyl chlorides and anhydrides to give the twisted bay chlorinated OAPP derivatives which were isolated in their reduced dihydro‐form. The OAPP target could be obtained via a palladium catalyzed dehalogenation and a subsequent oxidation. The eightfold isosteric [CH→N] replacement within the peropyrene core structure results in a large decrease of the frontier orbital energies, rendering the target compound a potent oxidant while preserving the planarity of the aromatic core. The radical anion was obtained by reduction of the OAPP with KC₈ and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. A general discussion of the number and location of [CH→N] replacements in peropyrene structures and their frontier orbital energies is provided.

Exceptional Manganese(II) Stability and Manganese(II)/Zinc(II) Selectivity with Rigid Polydentate Ligands

While Mn^II complexes meet increasing interest in biomedical applications, ligands are lacking that enable high Mn^II complex stability and selectivity vs. Zn^II, the most relevant biological competitor. We report here two new bispidine derivatives, which provide rigid and large coordination cavities that perfectly match the size of Mn^II, yielding eight‐coordinate Mn^II complexes with record stabilities. In contrast, the smaller Zn^II ion cannot accommodate all ligand donors, resulting in highly strained and less stable six‐coordinate complexes. Combined theoretical and experimental data (X‐ray crystallography, potentiometry, relaxometry and ¹H NMR spectroscopy) demonstrate unprecedented selectivity for Mn^II vs. Zn^II (K_MnL/K_ZnL of 10⁸–10¹⁰), in sharp contrast to the usual Irving–Williams behavior, and record Mn^II complex stabilities and inertness with logK_MnL close to 25.

Martin's Phosphino-Triol Revisited: Unexpected P-C Bond Cleavage Reactions and Their Suppression via Complexation of Al3+ and Sc3

A revised synthesis of Martin's phosphino-triols (two derivatives) is reported. Once isolated, these thermally sensitive triols were shown to disassemble selectively via an unexpected P-C bond cleavage reaction. This degradation pathway was effectively suppressed via complexation of Al³⁺ and Sc³⁺. In the resulting half-cage complexes, the ligand scaffold is bound to each metal (Al³⁺ and Sc³⁺, respectively) via all four donor atoms. So far, this κ⁴-P,O,O',O″-coordination mode has not been observed for any other phosphino-triol.

Redox Activity of Iron Diazine-Diimine Carbonyl and Dinitrogen Complexes: A Comparative Study of the Influence of the Heterocyclic Ring

A detailed investigation of the electronic structure of diazinediimine iron complexes and their comparison with the pyridine analogues reveals subtle but important differences, imparted by the supporting heterocycle. In the case of LFe(CO)₂ complexes (L = pyrazine- and pyrimidinediimine), the characterization of three available redox states confirmed that whereas the nature of the electron-transfer processes is similar, the differences in π-acidity of the supporting heterocycle significantly affect the redox potentials. The reduction of LFe(CO)₂ can yield either a ligand-centered radical (for L = pyrimidine) or a C-C-bonded dimer (for L = pyrazine), supported by a dearomatized core. In the latter case, the C-C bond can be reversibly cleaved oxidatively. Compared to the carbonyl analogues, employing weak-field N₂ ligands triggers changes in electronic structure for the neutral and reduced LFe(N₂) complexes (L = pyrimidinediimine). En route to the synthesis of the nitrogen complexes, the square-planar LFeCl (L = pyrimidinediimine) was isolated. The monoradical character of the supporting chelate triggers the asymmetric distribution of electron density around the heterocycle.

Molybdenum-Mediated N2 -Splitting and Functionalization in the Presence of a Coordinated Alkyne

A new [PCCP]‐coordinated molybdenum platform comprising a coordinated alkyne was employed for the cleavage of molecular dinitrogen. The coordinated η²‐alkyne was left unaffected during this reduction. DFT calculations suggest that the reaction proceeds via an initially generated terminal N₂‐complex, which is converted to a dinuclear μ‐(η¹:η¹)‐N₂‐bridged intermediate prior to N−N bond cleavage. Protonation, alkylation and acylation of the resulting molybdenum nitrido complex led to the corresponding N‐functionalized imido complexes. Upon oxidation of the N‐acylated imido derivative in MeCN, a fumaronitrile fragment was built up via C−C coupling of MeCN to afford a dinuclear molybdenum complex. The key finding that the strong N≡N bond may be cleaved in the presence of a weaker, but spatially constrained C≡C bond contradicts the widespread paradigm that coordinated alkynes are in general more reactive than gaseous N₂.

Excited State Properties of Lanthanide(III) Complexes with a Nonadentate Bispidine Ligand

EuIII , TbIII , GdIII and YbIII complexes of the nonadentate bispidine derivative L2 (bispidine=3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane) were successfully synthesized and their emission properties studied. The X-ray crystallography reveals full encapsulation by the nonadentate ligand L2 that enforces to all LnIII cations a common highly symmetrical capped square antiprismatic (CSAPR) coordination geometry (pseudo C4v symmetry). The well-resolved identical emission spectra in solid state and in solution confirm equal structures in both media. As therefore expected, this results in long-lived excited states and high emission quantum yields ([EuIII L2 ]+ , H2 O, 298 K, τ=1.51 ms, ϕ=0.35; [TbIII L2 ]+ , H2 O, 298 K, τ=1.95 ms, ϕ=0.68). Together with the very high kinetic and thermodynamic stabilities, these complexes are a possible basis for interesting biological probes.

Validation of Ab-Initio-Predicted Magnetic Anisotropies and Magneto-structural Correlations in Linear Hetero-trinuclear DyIII -NiII 2 Compounds

Reported are single crystal SQUID and single crystal high-frequency/high-field EPR data of a trinuclear complex with a rare six-coordinate coordination sphere of a DyIII center coupled to two terminal six-coordinate NiII ions. The analysis of the single crystal spectroscopic parameters allows for an accurate description of the ground state wavefunction. The experimental analysis is supplemented by the analysis of the paramagnetic NMR spectra, allowing for a thorough description of the DyIII center. The experimental data are interpreted on the basis of an ab initio ligand field analysis, and the computed parameters are in good agreement with the experimental observations. This supports the quality of the theoretical approach based on a pseudo-spin Hamiltonian for the electronic ground state. Further support emerges from the ab initio ligand field theory based analysis of a structurally very similar system that, in contrast to the complex reported here, shows single molecule magnetic properties, and this is in agreement with the quantum-chemical prediction and analysis.

The Stronger the Better: Donor Substituents Push Catalytic Activity of Molecular Chromium Olefin Polymerization Catalysts

The donor strength of bifunctional pyridine-cyclopentadienyl ligands was altered systematically by the introduction of donating groups in the para-position of the pyridine. In the resulting chromium complexes an almost linear correlation between donor strength and the nitrogen-chromium distance as well as the electronic absorption maximum is experimentally observed. The connection of electron-donating groups in the ligand backbone leads to an efficient transfer of the electronic influences to the catalytically active metal centre without restricting it through steric effects. Therefore, catalytic olefin polymerization activity, which is already very high for the previously studied catalysts, increase considerably by attaching para-amino groups to the chelating pyridine or quinoline, respectively. Combining electron-rich indenyl ligands with para-amino substituted pyridines lead to the highest catalytic activities observed so far for this class of organo chromium olefin polymerisation catalysts. The resulting polymers are of ultra-high molecular weight and the ability of the catalysts to incorporate co-monomers is also very high.

Reductive Hydrogenation under Single-Site Control: Generation and Reactivity of a Transient NHC-Stabilized Tantalum(III) Alkoxide

One of the most attractive routes for the preparation of reactive tantalum(III) species relies on the efficient salt-free hydrogenolysis of tantalum(V) alkyls or tantalum(V) alkylidenes, a process known as reductive hydrogenation. For silica-crafted tantalum alkyls and alkylidenes, this process necessarily proceeds at well-separated tantalum centers, while related reductive hydrogenations in homogeneous solution commonly involve dimeric complexes. Herein, an NHC scaffold was coordinated to a novel tri(alkoxido)tantalum(V) alkylidene to circumvent the formation of dimers during reductive hydrogenation. Employing this new model system, a key intermediate of the process, namely a hydrido-tantalum alkyl, was isolated for the first time and shown to exhibit a bidirectional reactivity. Upon being heated, the latter complex was found to undergo either an α-elimination or a reductive alkane elimination. In the (overall unproductive) α-elimination step, H₂ and the parent alkylidene were regenerated, while the sought-after transient d²-configured tantalum(III) derivative was produced along the reaction coordinate of the reductive alkane elimination. The reactive low-valence metal center was found to rapidly attack one of the NHC substituents via an oxidative C-H activation, which led to the formation of a cyclometalated tantalum(V) hydride. The proposed elemental steps are in line with kinetic data, deuterium labeling experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) modeling studies. DFT calculations also indicated that the S = 0 spin ground state of the Ta(III) center plays a crucial role in the cyclometalation reaction. The cyclometalated Ta(V) hydride was further investigated and reacted with several alkenes and alkynes. In addition to a rich insertion and isomerization chemistry, these studies also revealed that the former hydride may undergo a formal cycloreversion and thus serve as a tantalum(III) synthon, although the original tantalum(III) intermediate is not involved in this process. The latter reactivity was observed upon reaction with internal alkynes and led to the corresponding η²-alkyne derivatives via vinyl intermediates, which rearrange via a remarkable, hitherto unprecedented, hydrogen shift reaction.

Dinuclear silver(i) complexes with a pyridine-based macrocyclic type of ligand as antimicrobial agents against clinically relevant species: the influence of the counteranion on the structure diversification of the complexes

New dinuclear silver(i) complexes with N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc), [Ag2(NO3)(tpmc)]NO3·1.7H2O (1), [Ag2(CF3SO3)2(tpmc)] (2), and [Ag2(tpmc)](BF4)2 (3) were synthesized and characterized by NMR (1H and 13C), IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and molar conductivity measurements. The molecular structures of the complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The spectroscopic and crystallographic data showed that the structure of the complexes strongly depends on the nature of the counteranion of silver(i) salt used for their synthesis. The antimicrobial activity of complexes 1-3 was examined against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and different species of unicellular fungus Candida spp. The ability of these complexes to inhibit the formation of Candida biofilms and to eradicate the already formed biofilms was tested in the standard microtiter plate-based assay. In addition, a bioelectrochemical testing of the antimicrobial activity of complex 1 against early biofilm was also performed. The obtained results indicated that complexes 1-3 showed increased activity toward Gram-negative bacteria and Candida spp. and could inhibit the formation of biofilms. In most cases, these complexes had positive selectivity indices and showed similar or even better activity with respect to the clinically used silver(i) sulfadiazine (AgSD). The values of the binding constants for complexes 1-3 to bovine serum albumin (BSA) were found to be high enough to indicate their binding to this biomolecule, but not so high as to prevent their release upon arrival at the target site. Moreover, the positive values of partition coefficients for these complexes indicated their ability to be transported through the cell membrane. Once inside the cell, complexes 1-3 could induce the formation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in C. albicans cells and/or interact with DNA. Taken together, silver(i) complexes with the tpmc ligand could be considered as novel antimicrobial compounds with favourable pharmacological properties, being safer than AgSD.

A 2,2'-diphosphinotolane as a versatile precursor for the synthesis of P-ylidic mesoionic carbenes via reversible C-P bond formation

A metal-templated synthetic route to cyclic (aryl)(ylidic) mesoionic carbenes (CArY-MICs) featuring an endocyclic P-ylide is presented. This approach, which requires metal templates with two cis-positioned open coordination sites, is based on the controlled cyclisation of a P,P'-diisopropyl-substituted 2,2'-diphosphinotolane (1) and leads to chelate complexes coordinated by a phosphine donor and the CArY-MIC carbon atom. The C-P bond formation involved in the former partial cyclisation of 1 proceeds under mild conditions and was shown to be applicable all over the d-block. In the presence of a third fac-positioned open coordination site, the P-C bond formation was found to be reversible, as shown for a series of molybdenum complexes. DFT modelling studies are in line with an interpretation of the target compounds as CArY-MICs.

Use of Crown Ether Functions as Secondary Coordination Spheres for the Manipulation of Ligand-Metal Intramolecular Electron Transfer in Copper-Guanidine Complexes

Intramolecular electron transfer (IET) between a redox-active organic ligand and a metal in a complex is of fundamental interest and used in a variety of applications. In this work it is demonstrated that secondary coordination sphere motifs can be applied to trigger a radical change in the electronic structure of copper complexes with a redox-active guanidine ligand through ligand-metal IET. Hence, crown ether functions attached to the ligand allow the manipulation of the degree of IET between the guanidine ligand and the copper atom through metal encapsulation.

Reactivity of a T-shaped cobalt(I) pincer-complex

The reactivity of a paramagnetic T-shaped cobalt(i) complex, [(iPrboxmi)Co], stabilised by a monoanionic bis(oxazolinylmethylidene)-isoindolate (boxmi) NNN pincer ligand is described. The exposure to carbon monoxide as an additional neutral ligand resulted in the square-planar species [(iPrboxmi)Co(CO)], accompanied by a change in the electronic spin state from S = 1 to S = 0. In contrast, upon treatment with trimethylphosphine the formation of the distorted tetrahedral complex [(iPrboxmi)Co(PMe3)] was observed (S = 1). Reacting [(iPrboxmi)Co] with iodine (I2), organic peroxides (tBu2O2, (SiMe3)2O2) and diphenyldisulphide (Ph2S2) yielded the tetracoordinated complexes [(iPrboxmi)CoI], [(iPrboxmi)Co(OtBu)], [(iPrboxmi)Co(OSiMe3)] and [(iPrboxmi)Co(SPh)], respectively, demonstrating the capability of the boxmi-supported cobalt(i) complex to homolytically cleave bonds and thus its distinct one-electron reactivity. Furthermore, a square-planar cobalt(ii) alkynyl complex [(iPrboxmi)Co(CCArF)] was identified as the main product in the reaction between [(iPrboxmi)Co] and a terminal alkyne, 4-fluoro-1-ethynylbenzene. Putting such species in the context of the previously investigated hydroboration catalysis, its stoichiometric reaction with pinacolborane revealed its potential conversion into a cobalt(ii) hydride complex, thus confirming its original attribution as off-cycle species.

Bis(perchlorocatecholato)germane: Hard and Soft Lewis Superacid with Unlimited Water Stability

Previously described Lewis superacids are moisture sensitive and predominantly hard in character-features that severely limit their widespread use in orbital-controlled reactions and under non-inert conditions. Described here are adducts of bis(perchlorocatecholato)germane, the first hard and soft Lewis superacid based on germanium. Remarkably, the synthesis of this compound is performed in water, and the obtained H2 O adduct constitutes a strong Brønsted acid. If applied as an adduct with aprotic donors, it displays excellent activity in a diverse set of Lewis acid catalyzed transformations, covering hydrosilylation, hydrodefluorination, transfer hydrogenation, and carbonyl-olefin metathesis. Given the very straightforward synthetic access from two commercially available precursors, the unlimited water stability and the soft Lewis acidic character, it promotes the transfer of Lewis superacidity into organic synthesis and materials science.

A Redox-Active Heterobimetallic N-Heterocyclic Carbene Based on a Bis(imino)pyrazine Ligand Scaffold

A new redox-active N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) architecture is obtained using N-methylated pyrazinediimine iron complexes as precursors. The new species exhibit strong π-accepting/σ-donating properties and are able to ligate two metal centres simultaneously. The redox activity was demonstrated by the reversible chemical oxidation of a heterobimetallic Fe0 /RhI example, which affords an isolable ligand-based radical cation. The reversible redox process was then applied in the catalytic hydrosilylation of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone, where the reaction rate could be reversibly controlled as a function of the catalyst oxidation state. The new NHC exhibits high electrophilicity and nucleophilicity, which was demonstrated in the reversible activation of alcohols and amines. The electronic structure of the resulting complexes was investigated through various spectroscopic and computational methods.

Reaction Pathways and Redox States in α-Selective Cobalt-Catalyzed Hydroborations of Alkynes

Cobalt(II) alkyl complexes supported by a monoanionic NNN pincer ligand are pre‐catalysts for the regioselective hydroboration of terminal alkynes, yielding the Markovnikov products with α:β‐(E) ratios of up to 97:3. A cobalt(II) hydride and a cobalt(II) vinyl complex appear to determine the main reaction pathway. In a background reaction the highly reactive hydrido species specifically converts to a coordinatively unsaturated cobalt(I) complex which was found to re‐enter the main catalytic cycle.

Single or Paired? Structure and Reactivity of PNP-Chromium(II) Hydrides

The preparation and reactivity of a range of novel paramagnetic chromium(II) complexes supported by a carbazole-based PNP pincer ligand is reported. Deprotonation of the ligand precursors ^R(PNP)H (1^R) and subsequent reaction with chromium(II) chloride led to the formation of square-planar chlorido complexes ^R(PNP)CrCl (2^R). Further reaction with various alkylating agents resulted in the isolation of chromium alkyl complexes ^R(PNP)CrR' (3^R-R') which were then hydrogenated to yield two rare examples of paramagnetic chromium(II) hydrides 4^iPr and 4^tBu. Both compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction and paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy supported by a comprehensive DFT-supported assignment of the resonances. While the di(tert-butyl)phosphino PNP substituted complex 4^tBu was found to exhibit a monomeric square-planar molecular structure, its isopropyl-substituted analog 4^iPr forms a dimer, also indicated by a strong antiferromagnetic coupling of the chromium centers. The pronounced reactivity of these compounds toward C═X double bonds was demonstrated by reaction with benzophenone, N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, and carbon dioxide, which gave the corresponding insertion products. The alkoxido complex 5^iPr, the amidinato complex 6^iPr, and the formato compound 7^tBu were also characterized by X-ray diffraction.

First-Generation Bispidine Chelators for 213 BiIII Radiopharmaceutical Applications

Hepta- and octadentate bispidines (3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane, diaza-adamantane) with acetate, methyl-pyridine, and methyl-picolinate pendant groups at the amine donors of the bispidine platform have been prepared and used to investigate BiIII coordination chemistry. Crystal structure and solution spectroscopic data (NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry) confirm that the rigid and relatively large bispidine cavity with an axially distorted geometry is well suited for BiIII and in all cases forms nine-coordinate complexes; this is supported by an established hole size and shape analysis. It follows that nonadentate bispidines probably will be more suited as bifunctional chelators for 213 BiIII -based radiopharmaceuticals. However, two isomeric picolinate-/acetate-based heptadentate ligands already show very efficient complexation kinetics with 213 BiIII at ambient temperature and kinetic stability that is comparable with the standard ligands used in this field. The experimentally determined hydrophilicities (log D7.4 values) show that the BiIII complexes reported are relatively hydrophilic and well suited for medicinal applications. We also present a very efficient and relatively accurate method to compute charge distributions and hydrophilicities, and this will help to further optimize the systems reported here.

Opening up the Valence Shell: A T-Shaped Iron(I) Metalloradical and Its Potential for Atom Abstraction

A thermally stable, T-shaped, d7 high-spin iron(I) complex was obtained by reduction of a PNP-supported ferrous chloride. Paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy combined with DFT modeling was used to analyze the electronic structure of the coordinatively highly unsaturated complex. The metalloradical character of the compound was demonstrated by the formation of a benzophenone ketyl radical complex upon addition of benzophenone. Furthermore, the compound displays a rich chemistry as an oxygen-atom abstractor from epoxides, yielding a dinuclear, diferrous [Fe2 O] complex.

1,2,5,6-Tetrakis(guanidino)-Naphthalenes: Electron Donors, Fluorescent Probes and Redox-Active Ligands

New redox-active 1,2,5,6-tetrakis(guanidino)-naphthalene compounds, isolable and storable in the neutral and deep-green dicationic redox states and oxidisable further in two one-electron steps to the tetracations, are reported. Protonation switches on blue fluorescence, with the fluorescence intensity (quantum yield) increasing with the degree of protonation. Reactions with N-halogenosuccinimides or N-halogenophthalimides led to a series of new redox-active halogeno- and succinimido-/phthalimido-substituted derivatives. These highly selective reactions are proposed to proceed via the tri- or tetracationic state as the intermediate. The derivatives are oxidised reversibly at slightly higher potentials than that of the unsubstituted compounds to dications and further to tri- and tetracations. The integration of redox-active ligands in the transition-metal complexes shifts the redox potentials to higher values and also allows reversible oxidation in two potentially separated one-electron steps.

Expanding the Boxmi Ligand Family: Synthesis and Application of NON and NSN Ligands

Two synthetic strategies for a new family of neutral NON ligands featuring a "bis(oxazolinylmethylidene)isobenzofuran" framework (boxman) are reported. A Pd-mediated cyclization reaction forming the isobenzofuran core constitutes the key reaction in the eight-step synthetic route to the nonbackbone-methylated target compound ^H,Rboxman. In contrast, the introduction of two additional methyl groups provides stereochemical control during backbone construction and thereby access to the methylated derivative ^Me,Rboxman, which was synthesized in five steps and improved yields. In addition, the synthetic sequence was transferred to the thio analogue, providing access to the NSN ligand ^H,Rboxmene. Subsequent complexation experiments with iron and cobalt chloride precursors afforded the four-coordinated chlorido complexes ^Me,RboxmanMCl₂ (R = Ph, iPr; M = Fe, Co) and established the boxman family as trans-chelating, bidentate bis(oxazoline) ligands. Application of the latter in the nickel(II)- and zinc(II)-catalyzed α-fluorination of β-ketoesters and oxindoles (up to 98% yield and 94% ee) demonstrated their suitability for enantioselective catalysis.

Luminogens for Aggregation-Induced Emission via Titanium-Mediated Double Nucleophilic Addition to 2,5-Dialkynylpyridines: Formation and Transformation of the Emitting Aggregates

New luminogens for aggregation‐induced emission (AIE), which are characterized by a branched cross‐conjugated 2,6‐bis(1,2,2‐triarylvinyl)pyridine motif, have been synthesized exploiting the one‐pot Ti‐mediated tetraarylation of 2,6‐bis(arylethynyl)pyridines. Thin layer solid‐state emitters were prepared by spin‐coating of the luminogens, while AIE‐colloidal dispersions were investigated in terms of optical density and scattering behaviour. This has given insight into particle size distributions, time evolution of the aggregation and the influence of different functionalization patterns on the luminescence of molecular aggregates. In particular, a combination of extinction spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering is being proposed as a powerful method for investigating the dynamic aggregation process in AIE‐type colloids.

Electron-Rich, Lewis Acidic Diborane Meets N-Heterocyclic Aromatics: Formation and Electron Transfer in Cyclophane Boranes

Herein reported are the reactions of an electron-rich, Lewis acidic diborane with N-heterocyclic aromatics to give first members of an unprecedented family of highly charged cationic cyclophanes with diboranyl units. Tetracationic cyclophanes with 4,4'-bipyridine/ 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene and diboranyl units were synthesized and their redox chemistry was studied. Cyclisation of two diboranyl and two pyrazine units is accompanied by electron transfer from the diboranyl unit to the pyrazine. Our results pave the way for the integration of redox-active diboranyl units into cyclophanes and supramolecular structures.

Perhalogenated Tetraazaperopyrenes and Their Corresponding Mono- and Dianions

Chlorination and bromination of 2,9-perfluoropropyl-substituted tetraazaperopyrenes (TAPPs) under forcing conditions resulted in fully core-halogenated TAPP derivatives, devoid of hydrogen atoms at the polycyclic aromatic core. The octahalogenation stabilized the reduced mono- and dianionic compounds sufficiently to allow for their characterization. The additional ortho-chlorination led to an improvement of the electron mobility compared to the bay-substituted tetrachloro-TAPP when employed as an n-channel semiconductor in thin-film transistors.
