Abstract
Amongst the electron-deficient alkene derivatives, as molecular platforms widely used in organic synthesis, the readily available alkylidene Meldrum's acid derivatives hold a unique place due to the high electrophilicity and chemical versatility of the 1,3-dioxan-4,6-dione moiety. This short review intends to give an overview of recent advances in the asymmetric catalytic transformation of alkylidene Meldrum's acids into valuable chiral heterocycles, evolving from seminal investigations into C-C bond construction from the alkene moiety, to more recent enantioselective C-N and C-S bond formation, vinylogous processes, and the exploitation of the reactivity of the 1,3-dioxan-4,6-dione moiety to develop efficient annulation sequences.

Abstract
A domino Vinylogous aza-Michael-Aldol-Cyclocondensation (aza-VMAC) reaction was achieved with a series of alkylidene Meldrum's acid derivatives under simple operational conditions paving the way to novel pyrano[2,3-c]pyrroles in an excellent diasteroselectivity (>96 : 4), encompassing the relative control of three contiguous stereocenters.

Abstract
An asymmetric 1,6-conjugate addition to presynthesized δ-aryl-δ-cyano-disubstituted para-quinone methides through bifunctional phosphonium-amide-promoted ion-pair catalysis for acyclic all-carbon quaternary stereocenter construction has been described. Both acyclic and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls participate in the asymmetric alkylation reaction, furnishing a wide array of diarylmethanes bearing a single acyclic quaternary carbon stereocenter or vicinal cyclic and acyclic quaternary carbon stereocenters with high efficiency and excellent stereoselectivity. Computational studies elucidate the origin of the enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Copper-catalysed asymmetric C–C bond-forming reactions using organometallic reagents have developed into a powerful tool for the synthesis of complex molecules with single or multiple stereogenic centres over the past decades. Among the various acceptors employed in such reactions, those with a heterocyclic core are of particular importance because of the frequent occurrence of heterocyclic scaffolds in the structures of chiral natural products and bioactive molecules. Hence, this review focuses on the progress made over the past 20 years for heterocyclic acceptors.

Abstract
The copper-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition (ACA) of nucleophiles onto polyenic Michael acceptors represents an attractive and powerful methodology for the synthesis of relevant chiral molecules, as it enables in a straightforward manner the sequential generation of two or more stereogenic centers. In the last decade, various chiral copper-based catalysts were evaluated in combination with different nucleophiles and Michael acceptors, and have unambiguously demonstrated their usefulness in the control of the regio- and enantioselectivity of the addition. The aim of this review is to report recent breakthroughs achieved in this challenging field.

Abstract
An asymmetric doubly vinylogous Michael addition (DVMA) of α,β-unsaturated γ-butyrolactams to sterically congested β-substituted cyclic dienones with high site-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivity has been achieved. An unprecedented DVMA/vinylogous Michael addition/isomerization cascade reaction affords chiral fused tricyclic γ-lactams with four newly formed stereocenters.

Abstract
CC coupling: DiPPAM 1 and BINAP 2 ligands led to divergent behaviors in the asymmetric conjugate addition (ACA) of dialkylzinc reagents to linear aryldienones, which were applied to the development of a highly selective sequential asymmetric 1,6/1,4-ACA process (see scheme; Tf = triflate, DBU = 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene).

Abstract
Efficient and highly diastereo- and enantioselective conjugate additions of phenyldimethylsilyl units to acyclic and cyclic dienones and dienoates are disclosed. The C-Si bond forming reactions are catalyzed by 2.0-2.5 mol % of a copper complex of a chiral monodentate N-heterocyclic carbene; the requisite reagent, PhMe(2)Si-B(pin), is commercially available or can be easily prepared. Transformations generate allylsilanes in up to 98% yield and >99:1 enantiomeric ratio, and proceed with complete 1,4-selectivity, unless the dienone or dienoate carries a trisubstituted alkene conjugated to the carbonyl group; in the latter cases, 1,6-addition products are obtained exclusively and in up to >98% Z selectivity.

Abstract
The copper-catalyzed conjugate addition of various Grignard reagents to polyconjugated enones (dienone and enynone derivatives) is reported. The catalyst system, composed of copper triflate and an NHC ligand, led to the unusual selective formation of the 1,4-addition products. This reaction allows for the creation of all-carbon chiral quaternary centers with enantiomeric excesses up to 99%. The remaining unsaturation on the 1,4 adducts give access to valuable synthetic transformations.

Abstract
Meldrum's acid (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione) is a molecule with a unique history, owing to its originally misassigned structure, as well as a unique place among acylating agents, owing to its high acidity and remarkable electrophilicity. In this Account, we outline the work of our group and others toward harnessing the reactivity of Meldrum's acid derivatives in catalytic C-C bond-forming reactions. Taking advantage of the ability of Meldrum's acid to decompose to CO(2) and acetone following acyl substitution, we have shown that intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylations can be performed under mild Lewis acidic conditions to yield a variety of benzocyclic ketones. In a further expansion of this method, a domino Friedel-Crafts acylation/alpha-tert alkylation reaction was used to complete the first total synthesis of (+/-)-taiwaniaquinol B. The unique characteristics of Meldrum's acid extend to its alkylidene derivatives, which have also proven exceptionally useful for the development of new reactions not readily accessible from other unsaturated carbonyl electrophiles. By combining the electrophilicity and dienophilicity of alkylidene Meldrum's acid with our Friedel-Crafts chemistry, we have demonstrated new domino syntheses of coumarin derivatives and tetrahydrofluorenones by conjugate additions, Diels-Alder cycloadditions, and C-H functionalizations. Additionally, we have used these powerful acceptors to allow conjugate alkenylation with functionalized organostannanes, and conjugate allylation under very mild conditions. We have also shown that these molecules permit the asymmetric formation of all-carbon quaternary stereocenters via enantioselective conjugate additions. These reactions employ dialkylzinc nucleophiles, maximizing functional group compatibility, while the presence of a Meldrum's acid moiety in the product allows a variety of postaddition modifications. A full investigation of this reaction has determined the structural factors of the alkylidene that contribute to optimal enantioselectivity. We have also used these acceptors to form tertiary propargylic stereocenters in very high enantiomeric excess by an extremely mild, Rh(I)-catalyzed addition of TMS-acetylene. Overall, we demonstrate that Meldrum's acid and its derivatives provide access to a broad range of reactivities that, combined with their ease of handling and preparation, make them ideal electrophiles.
