Abstract
Carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC4.2.1.1) are metalloenzymes that catalyse reversible hydration reaction of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and protons. In recent years, there has been a great interest in inhibitors/activators of carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes. Therefore, we investigated the effects of four different carbazole Schiff base derivatives, which are believed to have a potential to be used as a drug, on human carbonic anhydrase (hCA) isoenzymes I and II under in vitro conditions. The IC50 values of carbazole Schiff base derivatives were found to be in the range of 32.09-151.2 μM for hCA isoenzyme I and 21.82-40.54 μM for hCA isoenzyme II. Among all compounds, (E)-3-(((9-Octyl-9H-carbazole-3-yl)imino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol (C3) had the strongest inhibitory effect on hCA isoenzyme II. It was determined that 2,3,4-trimethoxy and 4-hydroxy phenyl containing carbazole compounds have selective inhibition against hCA II isoenzyme. Docking studies were performed against hCA I and II receptors using induced-fit docking method. The compounds had affinity scores varying from -7.74 ± 0.27 to -6.27 ± 0.07 kcal/mol for hCA I and from -8.04 ± 0.17 to -7.27 ± 0.18 kcal/mol for hCA II.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
In this study, a new series of N-alkyl-3,6-dibromocarbazole and N-alkyl-5-bromoindole derivatives have been synthesized and evaluated in vitro as anti-cancer and anti-migration agents. Cytotoxic and anti-migratory effects of these compounds were evaluated in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines and an insight on the structure-activity relationship was developed. Preliminary investigations of their anti-cancer activity demonstrated that several compounds have moderate antiproliferative effects on cancer cell lines with GI50 values in the range of 4.7-32.2 µM. Moreover, carbazole derivatives 10, 14, 15, 23, and 24 inhibit migration activity of metastatic cell line MDA-MB-231 in the range of 18-20%. The effect of compounds 10, 14, and 15 in extension of invadopodia and filopodia was evaluated by fluorescence microscopy and results demonstrated a reduction in actin-based cell extensions by compounds 10 and 15.

Abstract
Based on the efficacy of EHop-016 as an inhibitor of migration and Rac1 activation, a new series of carbazole derivatives has been synthesized. Cytotoxic and anti-migratory effects of these compounds were evaluated in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines. Preliminary investigations of their anticancer activity demonstrated that several compounds have moderate antiproliferative effects on cancer cell lines with GI50 values in the range of 13-50 µM. Furthermore, compounds 3b and 11b inhibit migration activity of metastatic cell line MDA-MB-231 by 32% and 34%, respectively. Compound 11b was shown to inhibit activation of the Rho GTPase Rac1 by 55% at 250 nM in both MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-435 cell lines. Compared with the IC50 of Rac1 inhibition by lead compound EHop-016 of 1.1 µM, compound 11b demonstrates 4X improved in vitro efficacy.

Abstract
Carbazoles represent an important class of heterocycles. These have been reported to exhibit diverse biological activities such as antimicrobial, antitumor, antiepileptic, antihistaminic, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrhoeal, analgesic, neuroprotective and pancreatic lipase inhibition properties. A series of carbazole derivatives such as N-substituted carbazoles, benzocarbazoles, furocarbazoles, pyrrolocarbazoles, indolocarbazoles, imidazocarbazoles, etc. have been synthesized. The N-substituted derivatives have gained the attention of researchers due to their therapeutic potential against neurological disorders and cell proliferation. Herein an attempt is made to review the medicinal importance of recently synthesized N-substituted carbazoles.

Abstract
A facile synthesis of hitherto unreported 3-(2-benzofuroyl)carbazoles 3a-k, 3,6-bis(2-benzofuroyl)carbazoles 5a-k, and naphtho[2,1-b]furoylcarbazoles 3l and 5l is described. The synthesis mainly relies on the ultrasound-assisted Rap-Stoermer reaction of 3-chloroacetyl- (1) or 3,6-dichloroacetyl-9-ethyl-9H-carbazole (4) with various salicylaldehydes 2a-k as well as 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde (2l) in CH(3)CN with the presence of PEG-400 as catalyst. The procedure offers easy access to benzofuroylcarbazoles in short reaction times and the products are obtained in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eugenol, the main constituent of clove oil possesses a number of medicinal activities. To enhance the medicinal property, structural modification is required. On the other hand, bismuth nitrate pentahydrate has been established as an excellent eco-friendly nitrating agent for several classes of organic compounds. RESULTS Bismuth nitrate pentahydrate-induced nitration of eugenol has been investigated very thoroughly. Twenty five different conditions have been studied. The microwave-induced solvent-free reaction has been identified as the best condition. CONCLUSIONS Spectral analyses confirm that 5-nitroeugenol is the sole product in all the cases. No oxidized or isomerized product could be detected.
