Abstract
Using a straightforward sequence of diphosphonylation and a Pd-catalysed concerted-metalation-deprotonation (CMD), a synthetic strategy towards polyaromatic phosphorus containing heterocycles was developed. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of new azaphosphaphenalenes, using easily accessible palladium catalysts and starting materials. The key tetrahydroquinoline intermediates of the reaction were synthesised via a fast and effective procedure and could be isolated as such, or further reacted towards the target polyaromatic structures. The obtained products showed interesting luminescent properties and their emission, excitation and quantum yields were evaluated.

Abstract
A method is described for thin film assembly of nano-sized Zn(II)-8-hydroxy-5,7-dinitroquinolate complex, Zn[((NO(2))(2)-8HQ)(2)] by using successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. Highly homogeneous assembled nano-sized metal complex thin films with particle size distribution in the range 27-47nm was identified by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Zn[((NO(2))(2)-8HQ)(2)] and [(NO(2))(2)-8HQ] ligand were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Graphical representation of temperature dependence of the dark electrical conductivity produced two distinct linear parts for two activation energies at 0.377eV and 1.11eV. The analysis of the spectral behavior of the absorption coefficient in the intrinsic absorption region reveals a direct allowed transition with a fundamental band gap of 2.74eV. The dark current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics showed the rectification effect due to the formation of junction barrier of Zn[((NO(2))(2)-8HQ)(2)] complex film/n-Si interface. The photocurrent in the reverse direction is strongly increased by photo-illumination and the photovoltaic characteristics were also determined and evaluated.

Abstract
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have attracted great attention because of their potential applications in full-color displays and solid-state lights. In the continual effort to search for ideal materials for OLEDs, small molecules with bipolar transporting character are extremely attractive as they offer the possibility to achieve efficient and stable OLEDs even in a simple single-layer device. In this Research News, we review the two design strategies of bipolar materials for OLEDs: molecules with or without donor-acceptor structures. The correlation between the experimental results and theoretical calculations of some of the materials is also discussed.

Abstract
A novel luminescent dye metal complex, (CZHQ)3Al, with 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum and hole-transporting carbazole units was designed and synthesized. The (CZHQ)3Al optical properties were carefully investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra in diluent solution. The results showed that the luminescent quantum yield of (CZHQ)3Al was 0.62 in DMSO and it emitted red-light with the band gap of 2.89 eV estimated from the onset absorption. In addition, the light-emission of (CZHQ)3Al can be quenched by electron acceptor (dimethylterephalate), where the process followed the Stern-Volmer equation. However, the fluorescent intensities of (CZHQ)3Al were slowly increased with the addition of electron donor (N,N-dimethylaniline). Furthermore, the molecular interactions of (CZHQ)3Al with fullerene (C60) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were also respectively investigated, which indicated the metal dye can be used as new fluorescent probe.
