SO2F2-mediated oxidation of primary and tertiary amines with 30% aqueous H2O2 solution

Hydrogen Peroxide-Assisted Alkaline Defluorination of the Fumigant and Potent Greenhouse Gas, Sulfuryl Fluoride: Hydrogen Peroxide as a Nucleophilic Reagent

Sulfuryl fluoride (SO2F2, SF) is an effective and increasingly popular fumigant for treating buildings and commodities in international trade but has come under scrutiny as a potent greenhouse gas. Passage of vent gases through an alkaline spray has been proposed for scrubbing SF, but base hydrolysis is insufficiently fast and generates equal yields of fluoride and fluorosulfate, the latter of unknown environmental hazard. We report here that alkaline hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) markedly accelerates SF removal and gives nearly quantitative yield of fluoride, with fluorosulfate produced in less than 3.5% yield. The other major products are sulfate, peroxymonosulfate, and oxygen. The oxidation state of S was unchanged. Hydroxyl and superoxide radical scavengers had no effect on the rate. The reaction proceeds by sequential nucleophilic displacement of fluoride by hydroperoxide ion (HO2-) to form a transient diperoxysulfate species that rapidly undergoes intramolecular redox rearrangement to give sulfate and singlet oxygen. Peroxymonosulfate, produced through side reactions, can fully defluorinate SF as well, although more slowly. Two new peaks were detected in the 19F-NMR spectrum corresponding to intermediates. Fluoride can be removed conventionally, and the other products are innocuous or short-lived. Thus, H2O2-assisted alkaline defluorination promises to be an effective method for scrubbing spent SF fumes and preventing SF from reaching the atmosphere. This study highlights the benefits of H2O2 and peroxymonosulfate as nucleophiles in remediation chemistry.

Controllable Selective Oxidation of Anilines to Azoxybenzenes and Nitrobenzenes by Regulating the Base

The importance of selectively oxidizing aniline into value-added chemicals azoxybenzene and nitrobenzene is well-recognized in organic synthesis. However, the lack of control over selectivity and the complex synthesis of costly catalysts significantly hinder these reactions' industrial applications. In this work, an environmentally friendly approach was developed for the selective oxidization of substituted anilines. This method involves adjusting the strength of alkalinity with peroxide as the oxidant, without the addition of any metals or additives. A mild base (NaF) facilitated azoxybenzene formation, while a stronger base (NaOMe) enabled the synthesis of nitroaromatics. These protocols are user-friendly and scalable, accommodating various substitution patterns and functional groups, yielding products with high to excellent yields. The findings of this work present a framework for investigating base catalysis in organic synthesis and provide a viable and effective approach for selectively oxidizing aniline.

Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Approach for the Synthesis of Azoxybenzenes from the Reductive Dimerization of Nitrosobenzenes and the Oxidation of Anilines

This study demonstrates a comparative synthesis of azoxybenzenes through the reductive dimerization of nitrosobenzenes and the oxidation of anilines. Utilizing the cost-effective DIPEA catalyst at room temperature with water as a green solvent, the one-pot procedure involves in situ generation of nitrosobenzene derivatives from anilines in the presence of oxone, followed by DIPEA addition. Both methods yield azoxybenzenes with high selectivity, showcasing the versatility of DIPEA in facilitating the synthesis of azoxybenzenes with various substituents in ortho, meta, and para positions, encompassing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups. The use of DIPEA proves pivotal in achieving moderate to high yields, emphasizing its significance in this environmentally friendly synthesis.
