An Inverse Class-E Power Amplifier for Ultrasound Transducer

An inverse Class-E power amplifier was designed for an ultrasound transducer. The proposed inverse Class-E power amplifier can be useful because of the low series inductance values used in the output matching network that helps to reduce signal distortions. Therefore, a newly designed Class-E power amplifier can obtain a proper echo signal quality. The measured output voltage, voltage gain, voltage gain difference, and power efficiency were 50.1 V, 22.871 dB, 0.932 dB, and 55.342%, respectively. This low voltage difference and relatively high efficiency could verify the capability of the ultrasound transducer. The pulse-echo response experiment using an ultrasound transducer was performed to verify the capability of the proposed inverse Class-E power amplifier. The obtained echo signal amplitude and pulse width were 6.01 mV_p-p and 0.81 μs, respectively. The -6 dB bandwidth and center frequencies of the echo signal were 27.25 and 9.82 MHz, respectively. Consequently, the designed Class-E power amplifier did not significantly alter the performance of the center frequency of the ultrasound transducer; therefore, it could be employed particularly in certain ultrasound applications that require high linearity and reasonable power efficiency.

Novel dual-resistor-diode limtier circuit structures for high-voltage reliable ultrasound receiver systems

BACKGROUND:

The limiters have been used to protect the ultrasound receivers because of the inherent characteristic of the transducers which are required to use the high voltage excitation to obtain the reasonable echo signal amplitudes.

OBJECTIVE:

Among the variety of the limiters, the performances of discharge voltage degradation from the limiters gradually deteriorate the whole ultrasound systems according to the applied voltages of the ultrasonic transducers. This could cause the ultrasound systems to be unreliable for the long-term operations, resulting in possibly breaking the receiver systems.

METHODS:

Designed limiters were evaluated with insertion loss, total harmonic distortion, and pulse-echo responses with the ultrasound transducer devices.

RESULTS:

Designed new dual-resistor-diode limiters exhibited greater and faster suppression of the pulse width (1.15 V and 6.1 μs) for high-voltage signals.

CONCLUSIONS:

Our proposed dual-resistor-diode limiter could be one of the potential candidates for reliable ultrasound receiver system.

High-efficiency high-voltage class F amplifier for high-frequency wireless ultrasound systems

This paper presents a novel amplifier that satisfies both low distortion and high efficiency for high-frequency wireless ultrasound systems with limited battery life and size. While increasing the amplifier efficiency helps to address the problems for wireless ultrasound systems, it can cause signal distortion owing to harmonic components. Therefore, a new type of class F amplifier is designed to achieve high efficiency and low distortion. In the amplifier, the resonant circuit at each stage controls the harmonic components to reduce distortion and improve efficiency. Transformers with a large shunt resistor are also helpful to reduce the remaining noise in the input signal. The proposed class F amplifier is tested using simulations, and the voltage and current waveforms are analyzed to achieve correct operation with adequate efficiency and distortion. The measured performance of the class F amplifier has a gain of 23.2 dB and a power added efficiency (PAE) of 88.9% at 25 MHz. The measured DC current is 121 mA with a variance of less than 1% when the PA is operating. We measured the received echo signal through the pulse-echo response using a 25-MHz transducer owing to the compatibility of the designed class F amplifier with high- frequency transducers. The measured total harmonic distortion (THD) of the echo signal was obtained as 4.5% with a slightly low ring-down. The results show that the low THD and high PAE of the new high-efficiency and high-voltage amplifier may increase battery life and reduce the cooling fan size, thus providing a suitable environment for high-frequency wireless ultrasound systems.

Power Amplifier Linearizer for High Frequency Medical Ultrasound Applications

Power amplifiers (PAs) are used to produce high-voltage excitation signals to drive ultrasonic transducers. A larger dynamic range of linear PAs allows higher contrast resolution, a highly desirable characteristic in ultrasonic imaging. The linearity of PAs can be improved by reducing the nonlinear harmonic distortion components of high-voltage output signals. In this paper, a linearizer circuit is proposed to reduce output signal harmonics when working in conjunction with a PA. The PA performance with and without the linearizer was measured by comparing the output power 1-dB compression point (OP_1dB), and the second- and third-order harmonic distortions (HD2 and HD3, respectively). The results show that the PA with the linearizer circuit had higher OP_1dB (31.7 dB) and lower HD2 (-61.0 dB) and HD3 (-42.7 dB) compared to those of the PA alone (OP_1dB (27.1 dB), HD2 (-38.2 dB), and HD3 (-36.8 dB)) at 140 MHz. A pulse-echo measurement was also performed to further evaluate the capability of the linearizer circuit. The HD2 of the echo signal received by the transducer using a PA with the linearizer (-24.8 dB) was lower than that obtained for the PA alone (-16.6 dB). The linearizer circuit is capable of improving the linearity performance of PA by lowering harmonic distortions.

Crossed SMPS MOSFET-based protection circuit for high frequency ultrasound transceivers and transducers

Background

The ultrasonic transducer is one of the core components of ultrasound systems, and the transducer’s sensitivity is significantly related the loss of electronic components such as the transmitter, receiver, and protection circuit. In an ultrasonic device, protection circuits are commonly used to isolate the electrical noise between an ultrasound transmitter and transducer and to minimize unwanted discharged pulses in order to protect the ultrasound receiver. However, the performance of the protection circuit and transceiver obviously degrade as the operating frequency or voltage increases. We therefore developed a crossed SMPS (Switching Mode Power Supply) MOSFET-based protection circuit in order to maximize the sensitivity of high frequency transducers in ultrasound systems.

The high frequency pulse signals need to trigger the transducer, and high frequency pulse signals must be received by the transducer. We therefore selected the SMPS MOSFET, which is the main component of the protection circuit, to minimize the loss in high frequency operation. The crossed configuration of the protection circuit can drive balanced bipolar high voltage signals from the pulser and transfer the balanced low voltage echo signals from the transducer.

Methods

The equivalent circuit models of the SMPS MOSFET-based protection circuit are shown in order to select the proper device components. The schematic diagram and operation mechanism of the protection circuit is provided to show how the protection circuit is constructed. The P-Spice circuit simulation was also performed in order to estimate the performance of the crossed MOSFET-based protection circuit.

Results

We compared the performance of our crossed SMPS MOSFET-based protection circuit with a commercial diode-based protection circuit. At 60 MHz, our expander and limiter circuits have lower insertion loss than the commercial diode-based circuits. The pulse-echo test is typical method to evaluate the sensitivity of ultrasonic transducers. Therefore, we performed a pulse-echo test using a single element transducer in order to utilize the crossed SMPS MOSFET-based protection circuit in an ultrasound system.

Conclusions

The SMPS-based protection circuit could be a viable alternative that provides better sensitivity, especially for high frequency ultrasound applications.
