Laser ultrasonic frequency-domain imaging and phase weighted optimization based on full matrix capture

Far-field laser technology has greatly promoted the progress of nondestructive ultrasonic imaging of bulk structures. However, under thermoelastic excitation, the body waves exhibit a relatively low signal-to-noise ratio, resulting in images with low resolution and contrast. Based on the motivation, this paper developed a frequency-domain phase weighted imaging method to improve the quality of laser ultrasonic defect imaging. Firstly, laser ultrasonic scanning was performed on the sample with artificial transverse hole defects. The cylindrical lens focused line source was used to improve the intensity of the body wave signals, and ensure that there was no damage on the material surface under high laser energies. Then, the frequency-domain phase shift migration (PSM) algorithm was used to perform multimode imaging of defects, achieving frequency-domain synthetic aperture focusing technique (F-SAFT) and total focused method (F-TFM) imaging based on full matrix capture. Furthermore, the phase circular statistical vector (PCSV) was proposed for weighted optimization, which improved the image quality, suppressed the background noise and multimode artifacts. Finally, the imaging quality of several algorithms were discussed. The results indicate that frequency-domain images were superior to time-domain results. After phase weighting, the imaging quality can be further improved, and the detection blind zone was significantly reduced. This work will contribute to the rapid and high-quality defect imaging of laser ultrasonic.

Efficient testing of weld seam models with radii of curvature in the millimeter range using laser ultrasound

Laser ultrasound is a widely used tool for industrial quality assurance when a contactless and fast method is required. In this work, we used a laboratory setup based on a confocal Fabry-Perot interferometer to examine weld seam models. The focus was placed on small samples with curved surfaces (small in the sense that the radius of curvature is comparable to the largest ultrasonic wavelength) and on efficient ways to detect the presence and volume of process pores, with the goal to transfer this method to industrial applications. In addition to this experimental method for investigating welds, a numerical method that models the experimental setup was implemented in MATLAB. For this purpose, first the thermal effects of the excitation process were taken into account by solving the thermal diffusion equation with an explicit scheme. Then, the elastodynamic equations were solved using the Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique, taking into account the stresses induced by the excitation process. The B-Scans generated with this numerical model were compared with experimental B-Scans for simple test cases and good agreement was found. In a next step, the additional structures in the B-Scans resulting from air inclusions were identified and investigated with both methods using flat test specimens at first. Besides the direct echoes, structures from skimming surface waves and multiple reflections were visible. These additional structures are unwanted in defect reconstruction methods like the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) as they would lead to artifacts. In samples much larger than the largest ultrasound wavelength, however, these unwanted structures are still negligible in amplitude or can be well separated temporally, but for small samples this is no longer the case. As a result, reconstruction methods based on direct echoes like SAFT are difficult to apply. For many industrial applications, the reconstruction is not decisive at all, but only the knowledge of the total volume of process pores (TVPP). It is shown with both experimental and numerical methods, that this TVPP can be estimated from the variation in the B-Scans from various small weld seam models.

A Review of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Techniques for Defect Detection: Application to Fusion Welding and Future Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing Processes

In Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) and fusion welding, various defects such as porosity, cracks, deformation and lack of fusion can occur during the fabrication process. These have a strong impact on the mechanical properties and can also lead to failure of the manufactured parts during service. These defects can be recognized using non-destructive testing (NDT) methods so that the examined workpiece is not harmed. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of various NDT techniques for WAAM and fusion welding, including laser-ultrasonic, acoustic emission with an airborne optical microphone, optical emission spectroscopy, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, laser opto-ultrasonic dual detection, thermography and also in-process defect detection via weld current monitoring with an oscilloscope. In addition, the novel research conducted, its operating principle and the equipment required to perform these techniques are presented. The minimum defect size that can be identified via NDT methods has been obtained from previous academic research or from tests carried out by companies. The use of these techniques in WAAM and fusion welding applications makes it possible to detect defects and to take a step towards the production of high-quality final components.

Non-destructive laser-ultrasonic Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) for 3D visualization of defects

The Laser Ultrasonic (LU) technique has been widely studied. Detected ultrasonic signals can be further processed using Synthetic Aperture Focusing Techniques (SAFTs), to detect and image internal defects. LU-based SAFT in frequency-domain (F-SAFT) is developed to visualize horizontal hole-type defects in aluminum. Bulk acoustic waves are non-destructively generated by irradiating a laser line-source, and detected using a laser Doppler vibrometer at a point away from the generation. The influence of this non-coincident generation-detection on the equivalent acoustic velocity used in the algorithm is studied via velocity mappings. Because the wide-band generation characteristic of the LU technique, frequency range selections in acoustic wave signals are implemented to increase Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and reconstruction speed. Results indicate that by using the LU F-SAFT algorithm, and incorporating optimizations such as velocity mapping and frequency range selection, small defects can be visualized in 3D with corrected locations and improved image quality.

The Progress in Photoacoustic and Laser Ultrasonic Tomographic Imaging for Biomedicine and Industry: A Review

The current paper reviews a set of principles and applications of photoacoustic and laser ultrasonic imaging, developed in the Laser Optoacoustic Laboratories of ILIT RAS, NUST MISiS, and ILC MSU. These applications include combined photoacoustic and laser ultrasonic imaging for biological objects, and tomographic laser ultrasonic imaging of solids. Principles, algorithms, resolution of the developed methods, and related problems are discussed. The review is written in context of the current state-of-art of photoacoustic and laser ultrasonic imaging.
