How important is the liquid bulk viscosity effect on the dynamics of a single cavitation bubble?

Study on the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activities of Flammulina velutipes polysaccharide under controllable ultrasonic degradation based on artificial neural network

The polysaccharide fraction (FVP2) with molecular weight of 1525.09 kDa and intrinsic viscosity of 3.43 dL/g was isolated and purified from Flammulina velutipes (F. velutipes), and the ultrasonic degradation model of FVP2 was established to predict the molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity at the same time based on artificial neural network. FVP2U1 (1149.11 kDa, 1.78 dL/g), FVP2U2 (618.91 kDa, 1.19 dL/g) and FVP2U3 (597.35 kDa, 0.48 dL/g) with different molecular weights or viscosity were produced by this model to explore the effect of ultrasound on the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of FVP2. The results showed that ultrasonic treatment did not change the types of characteristic functional groups, monosaccharide composition and glycosidic bond of FVP2, but changed the chemical composition ratio and the degree of polymerization. Under ultrasonic treatment, the intrinsic viscosity of FVP2 still decreased significantly when the molecular weight did not decrease. Compared to other components subjected to ultrasonic degradation, FVP2U1 demonstrated higher molecular weight and viscoelasticity, while exhibiting lower antioxidant activity. In the case of no significant difference in molecular weight and monosaccharide composition, FVP2U3 with lower intrinsic viscosity has stronger hydration ability, higher crystallization index, lower viscoelasticity and stronger antioxidant capacity than FVP2U2.

Sonochemistry dosimetries in seawater

Due to the complex physical and chemical interactions taking place in the sonicated medium, various methods have been proposed in the literature for a better understanding of the sonochemical system. In the present paper, the performance of calorimetry, iodometry, Fricke, 4-nitrophenol, H2O2, and ascorbic acid dosimetry techniques have been evaluated over the electric power range from 20 to 80 W (f = 300 kHz). These methods have been analyzed for distilled and seawater in light of the literature findings. It has been found that the lowest temperatures and calorimetric energies were obtained for seawater in comparison to distilled water. However, the discrepancy between both mediums disappears with the increase in the electric power up to 80 W. Compared to the calorimetry results, a similar trend was obtained for the KI dosimetry, where the discrepancy between both solutions (seawater and distilled water) increased with the reduction in the electric power down to 20 W. In contrast, over the whole range of the electric power (20-80 W), the H2O2 dosimetry was drastically influenced by the salt composition of seawater, where, I3- formation was clearly reduced in comparison to the case of the distilled water. On the other hand, a fluctuated behavior was observed for the Fricke and 4-nitrophenol dosimetry methods, especially at the low electric powers (20 and 40 W). It has been found that dosimetry techniques based on ascorbic acid or potassium iodide are the best means for accurate quantification of the sonochemical activity in the irradiated liquid. As a result, it has been concluded, in terms of the dosimetry process's performance, that the dosimetry methods are in the following order: Ascorbic acid ≈ KI > Fricke > 4-nitrophenol > H2O2.

Investigation of sludge disintegration using vortex cavitation circulating fluidised grinding technology

Waste-activated sludge (WAS) is regarded as a source of hazardous waste pollution from sewage treatment plants. To efficiently deal with WAS, vortex cavitation circulating fluidised grinding technology (VCCFGT) was proposed as a novel circulating fluidisation technology (CFT) to disintegrate WAS. To be specific, we investigated the effects of disintegration duration, pressure, and filling ratio of mill balls on sludge disintegration. The results of chemical and physical evaluation showed that the values of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), disintegration degree (DD_SCOD), DNA, protein, carbohydrate, and NH₄⁺-N increased with the increase in the filling ratio of the mill balls. Under a pressure and filling ratio of 0.30 MPa and 1.6%, respectively, the maximum effect was achieved after 60 min of treatment. Compared to those in the treatment without mill balls, the values of SCOD, DD_SCOD, DNA, protein, carbohydrate, and NH₄⁺-N in the treatment using mill balls increased by 218, 229, 230, 177, 371, and 190%, respectively. As a result of this technology, the temperature of the sludge dramatically increased, rising approximately 42.9 °C. Compared to that of the raw sludge, the sludge particle size after treatment was reduced by 83.25% at most, and the morphology of the sludge comprised smaller flocs. Compared to that of the ball-milling method, the mill balls filling ratio of VCCFGT reduced by 93.60-98.12%. Compared to that of sludge disintegration by the vortex cavitation method, VCCFGT indicating good disintegration degree (increased by 229%) and economic feasibility. VCCFGT has good application prospects for sludge disintegration. The main mechanisms of sludge disintegration and organic release include centrifugal force, grinding, shear force, cavitation, and cyclic fatigue effects, among which grinding plays a leading role. This study concluded that CFT can effectively disintegrate sludge flocs and disrupt bacterial cell walls.

The effect of bulk viscosity on single bubble dynamics and sonoluminescence

In our previous paper, we derived a new single bubble model including the effect of bulk viscosity. To confront it to experiments, single bubble dynamics was measured here in 30% (v/v) glycerol-water mixture under different acoustic amplitudes and compared to models including or not the effect of bulk viscosity. The results showed that calculated bubble dynamics were not significantly affected by the bulk viscosity within the experimental conditions used in this study. However, there was a noticeable delay for the first rebound when bulk viscosity was considered. The corresponding sonoluminescence intensities were collected and compared with theoretical predictions. The results did not allow to discriminate between the two models (one includes the effect of bulk viscosity, the other does not), confirming the negligible effect of bulk viscosity in this condition (30% (v/v) glycerol-water mixture). Due to the instability of a single bubble in higher viscosity solutions, we could not implement experiments that can discriminate between the two models.

Ultrasonic-assisted ozone degradation of organic pollutants in industrial sulfuric acid

In this work, a combination of ozone (O₃) and ultrasound (US) has been firstly used to decolorize black concentrated sulfuric acid with high organic content. The effect of different reaction factors on the transparency, extent of decolorization, H₂SO₄ mass fraction, and organic pollutants removal is studied. In addition, the systematic interaction between ultrasound and ozone on the decolorization process is reviewed through comparative experiments of O₃, US and US/O₃. A sulfuric acid product that meets the requirements for first-class products in national standards, with an extent of decolorization of 74.07%, transparency of 70 mm, and a mass fraction of 98.04%, is obtained under the optimized conditions. Under the same conditions, it has been established that the treatment time can be saved by 25% using the US/O₃ process compared to using O₃. Further, the production of oxidative free radicals (•OH) in a concentrated sulfuric acid system is enhanced using the US/O₃ process compared with O₃. In addition, the degree of effectiveness of different oxidizing components on the decolorization process is revealed by adding different free radical shielding agents when the US/O₃ process is used.

Effects of reservoir rock pore geometries and ultrasonic parameters on the removal of asphaltene deposition under ultrasonic waves

Asphaltene deposition around the wellbore is a major cause of formation damage, especially in heavy oil reservoirs Ultrasonic stimulation, rather than chemical injection, is thought to be a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly means of removing asphaltene deposition. However, it seems to be unclear how crucial features like reservoir pore geometries and ultrasonic parameters affect this ultrasound treatment. In this work, five two-dimensional glass micromodels with different pore geometries were designed to assess the impact of pore geometries on the ultrasonic removal of asphaltene deposition. Experiments were undertaken in an ultrasound bath at a set frequency (20 kHz) and adjustable powers (100-1000 W). Direct image analysis before, during and after sonication was used to assess the impact of pore geometry and a change in ultrasonic parameter on the removal of asphaltene deposition. The effectiveness of ultrasound treatment at various sonication periods were found to be reliant on the pore geometries of the individual micromodels. For micromodels with throat sizes 300 µm and pore shapes as circle, square and triangle, an increase in ultrasonic power from 400 to 1000 W resulted in an increase in the percentage of removed asphaltene deposition after 2 h from 12.6 to 14.7, 11.5 to 14.63, and 5.8 to 7.1 percent, respectively.

Effect of cavitation bubble on the dispersion of magnetorheological polishing fluid under ultrasonic preparation

In the ultrasonic dispersion process, the ultrasonic cavitation effect can seriously affect the dispersion efficiency of magnetorheological polishing fluid (MRPF), but the mechanism remains unclear now. Through considering the continuity equation and Vand viscosity equation of the suspension, a revised cavitation bubble dynamic model in the MRPF was developed and calculated. The effects of presence or absence of solid particles, the volume fraction of solid particles, and viscosity on the cavitation bubble motion characteristics in the MRPF were discussed. Settlement experiments of the MRPF under ultrasonic and mechanical dispersion were observed. Analysis of particle dispersion is made by trinocular biomicroscope and image processing of the microscopic morphology of the MRPF. The results show that the high volume fraction of carbonyl iron particle (CIP) will significantly weaken the cavitation effect, and the low volume fraction of green silicon carbide (GSC) has a negligible effect on the cavitation effect in the MRPF. When the liquid viscosity is greater than or equal to 0.1 Pa·s, it is inconvenient to produce micro-jets in the MRPF. The sedimentation rate of the MRPF prepared by ultrasonic dispersion is lower than mechanical dispersion when the volume fraction of CIP is between 1% and 25%. The dispersion ratio under ultrasonic dispersion is lower than that under mechanical dispersion. The experimental results fit the simulation well. It offers a theoretical basis for exploring the ultrasonic cavitation effect in the industrial application of the MRPF.

Impact of ultrasonic treatment process on pour point of vegetable oils based liquid insulation

This study presents an application of ultrasonic technology in the high voltage liquid insulation domain towards the reduction of pour point of vegetable oil samples for the utilization of vegetable oils as liquid insulation in cold climate areas on power transformers. Pour point reduction has been achieved by processing the vegetable oil samples by using ultrasonic treatment process with 100 W and 30 kHz ultrasonic waves for various exposure times of 15, 30, 45 and 60 min. Edible vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, palm oil, sesame oil and non edible vegetable oils such as honge oil, neem oil and punna oil are considered as two categories of vegetable oils for this experimental investigation. Ultrasonic treatment process results in the reduction of pour point of vegetable oils to meet out the standard value of pour point for liquid insulation as per IEEE Standard C57.147, 2018. A significant reduction in pour point temperature of vegetable oil samples have been obtained with an increased exposure time. The obtained variations in pour point after exposure with ultrasonic waves may be due to the possible changes in crystallization kinetics of fatty acids components of vegetable oil samples due to energy input of ultrasonic waves. The experimental results have given a way towards the positive encouragement and development with ultrasonic treatment for achieving low pour point vegetable oils as liquid insulation in power transformers for applications on cold climatic areas.

Influence of liquid density variation on the bubble and gas dynamics of a single acoustic cavitation bubble

The effects of liquid density variation at the bubble surface on the dynamics of a single acoustic cavitation bubble are numerically studied. The Gilmore model together with a comprehensive hydrochemical model is used. The evaporation and condensation of water vapor are included in the hydrochemical model. The simulation results are compared to those resulting from the widely known Keller-Miksis model, which assumes a constant liquid density at the bubble surface. The numerical results for a single argon bubble in water reveal that the pressure and the temperature inside the bubble in collapse phase significantly increase, when the non-constant liquid density is used. These differences increase by raising the ultrasonic amplitude and by decreasing the bubble ambient radius and ultrasonic frequency. More importantly, at higher ultrasonic frequencies, the models give the same results regarding the cavitation dynamics and much more remarkably on the thermodynamic behavior of the bubble contents. Also, it is revealed that the entered number of water vapor molecules into the bubble in expansion phase through evaporation are less than the simulated one by the diffusion limited model. Notably, in the case of an argon bubble in aqueous solution of H₂SO₄(85wt%), a better match between the results of two models is observed. In addition, it is shown that considering the liquid bulk viscosity, arising from the rapid liquid density variation at the end of bubble collapse, in the Gilmore model leads to a slight growth in the collapse strength, temperature, and pressure within the bubble.
