Sonophotocatalytic degradation of sodium diclofenac using low power ultrasound and micro sized TiO2

Piezo-photocatalysis for efficient charge separation to promote CO2 photoreduction in nanoclusters

The substantial emissions of CO2 greenhouse gases have resulted in severe environmental problems, and research on the implementation of semiconductor materials to minimize CO2 is currently a highly discussed subject. Effective separation of interface charges is a major challenge for efficient piezo-photocatalytic systems. Meanwhile, the ultrasmall-sized metal nanoclusters can shorten the distance of electron transport. Herein, we synthesized Au25(p-MBA)18 nanoclusters (Au25 NCs) modified red graphitic carbon nitride (RCN) nanocatalysts with highly exposed Au active sites by in-situ seed growth method. The loading of Au25 NCs on the RCN surface provides more active sites and creates a long-range ordered electric field. It allows for the direct utilization of the piezoelectric field to separate photogenerated carriers during photo-piezoelectric excitation. Based on the above advantages, the rate of CO2 reduction to CO over Au25 NCs/RCN (111.95 μmol g-1 h-1) was more than triple compared to that of pristine RCN. This paper has positive implication for further application of metal clusters loaded semiconductor for piezo-photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Sonochemical synthesis of Ce-TiO2 nanocatalyst and subsequent application for treatment of real textile industry effluent

Treatment of real textile industry effluent using photocatalysis, sonocatalysis, sonophotocatalysis and H₂O₂ assisted sonophotocatalysis have been studied based on the use of Ce-TiO₂ nanocatalyst synthesized using sonochemical co-precipitation method. Characterization studies of the obtained catalyst revealed crystallite size as 1.44 nm with particles having spherical morphology. A shift of the absorption edge to the visible light range was also observed in UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-DRS) analysis. The effects of different operational parameters viz catalyst dose (0.5 g/L-2 g/L), temperature (30 °C-55 °C) and pH (3-12) on the COD reduction were studied. The reduction in the COD was higher at lower pH and the optimum temperature established was 45 °C. It was also elucidated that the required catalyst dose was lesser in combined sonophotocatalysis when compared with individual photocatalysis and sonocatalysis. Combination of processes and addition of oxidants increased the COD reduction with the sonophotocatalytic oxidation combined with H₂O₂ treatment showing the best results for COD reduction (84.75%). The highest reduction in COD for photocatalysis was only 45.09% and for sonocatalysis, it was marginally higher at 58.62%. The highest reduction in COD achieved by sonophotocatalysis was 64.41%. Toxicity tests coupled with Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis revealed that there were no additional toxic intermediates added to the system during the treatment. Kinetic study allowed establishing that generalized kinetic model fits the experimental results well. Overall, the combined advanced oxidation processes showed better results than the individual processes with higher COD reduction and lower requirement of the catalyst.

Ternary Polyaniline@Bi2O3-BiOCl Nanocomposites as Innovative Highly Active Photocatalysts for the Removal of the Dye under Solar Light Irradiation

Ternary PANI@Bi₂O₃-BiOCl nanocomposites were successfully synthesized during the oxidative polymerization of aniline monomer in the presence of Bi₂O₃. PANI@Bi₂O₃-BiOCl nanocomposites were characterized by several analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N₂ physisorption, UV-Vis Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The effective PANI-semiconductor interaction promotes the fast separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes, enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency of the materials towards methylene blue (MB) degradation under solar light irradiation. The best results were obtained by 0.5%PANI@Bi₂O₃-BiOCl, leading to 80% MB degradation in 2 h, four times higher than pristine Bi₂O₃-BiOCl. Moreover, 0.5%PANI@Bi₂O₃-BiOCl maintained stable photocatalytic performances for four cycles without significant activity loss. Various scavengers (isopropyl alcohol, formic acid, and benzoquinone) were used to identify the active species by trapping holes and radicals generated during the photocatalytic degradation process. Finally, a probable photocatalytic mechanism of PANI@Bi₂O₃-BiOCl photocatalyst was suggested.

Sonophotocatalytic degradation of malachite green in aqueous solution using six competitive metal oxides as a benchmark

A comparison study examines six different metal oxides (CuO, ZnO, Fe3O4, Co3O4, NiO, and α-MnO2) for the degradation of malachite green dye using four distinct processes. These processes are as follows: sonocatalysis (US/metal oxide), sonocatalysis under ultra-violet irradiation (US/metal oxide/UV), sonocatalysis in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (US/metal oxide/H2O2), and a combination of all these processes (US/metal oxide/UV/H2O2). The effective operating parameters, such as the dosage of metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs), the type of the process, and the metal oxides’ efficiency order, were studied. At the same reaction conditions, the sonophotocatalytic is the best process for all six MOsNPs, CuO was the better metal oxide than other MOsNPs, and at the sonocatalysis process, ZnO was the best metal oxide in other processes. It was found that the metal oxide order for sonocatalytic process is CuO > α-MnO2 ≥ ZnO > NiO ≥ Fe3O4 ≥ Co3O4 within 15–45 min. The order of (US/metal oxide/UV) process is ZnO ≥ NiO ≥ α-MnO2 > Fe3O4 ≥ CuO ≥ Co3O4 within 5–40 min. The order of (US/ MOsNPs/ H2O2) process is ZnO ≥ CuO ≥ α-MnO2 ≥ NiO > Co3O4 > Fe3O4 within 5–20 min. The maximum removal efficiency order of the sonophotocatalytic process is ZnO ≥ CuO > α-MnO2 > NiO > Fe3O4 ≥ Co3O4 within 2–8 min. The four processes degradation efficiency was in the order US/MOsNPs ˂ US/MOsNPs/UV ˂ US/MOsNPs/H2O2 ˂ (UV/Ultrasonic/MOsNPs/H2O2). Complete degradation of MG was obtained at 0.05 g/L MONPs and 1 mM of H2O2 using 296 W/L ultrasonic power and 15 W ultra-violet lamp (UV-C) within a reaction time of 8 min according to the MOsNPs type at the same sonophotocatalytic/H2O2 reaction conditions. The US/metal oxide/UV/H2O2 process is inexpensive, highly reusable, and efficient for degrading dyes in colored wastewater.

Nanoarchitecture of graphene nanosheets decorated with NiCr layered double hydroxide for sonophotocatalytic degradation of refractory antibiotics

Highly efficient and durable catalysts for wastewater treatment are urgently required to tackle critical environmental issues. In this regard, NiCr LDH (NC), NiCr LDH-GO (NC-GO), and NiCr LDH-rGO (NC-rGO) nanocomposites were synthesized. The results of XRD, EDX, and FTIR analyses not only explored the crystallographic and chemical structures of catalysts but also confirmed the successful synthesis. Further morphological, physical, chemical, and optical characteristics of the catalysts were evaluated more by SEM, HRTEM, BET, DRS, and XPS techniques. The as-synthesized catalysts were used for the efficient mineralization of rifadin under 50 W LED visible light irradiation and the ultrasonic power of 150 W. Amongst, 0.75 g L^-1 of NC-rGO demonstrated high sonophotocatalytic efficiency (88%) in natural pH (pH = 8) of 15 mg L^-1 of rifadin. The introduced system is also powerful for the decontamination of pharmaceutical-containing wastewater as well as other refractory antibiotics. Moreover, the radical trapping experiments demonstrated that the main reactive species involved in the degradation of rifadin are ^•OH, h⁺, and O₂^•-. The possible intermediates were thoroughly investigated using GCMS analysis. Also, NC-rGO demonstrated superior antibacterial activity in comparison with NC, NC-GO samples.

Aqueous Acetamiprid Degradation Using Combined Ultrasonication and Photocatalysis Under Visible Light

Acetamiprid (ACE), a neonicotinoid pesticide widely used in pest control, was found in high concentrations in soils, rivers, and lakes. In the present study, ACE degradation was investigated using visible light driven photocatalysis over nitrogen-graphene oxide (N-GO) and palladium-graphene oxide (Pd-GO)-doped ZnO photocatalysts combined with ultrasonication implemented either as a pretreatment (sonolysis) or operated simultaneously with photocatalysis (sonophocatalysis). The effectiveness of the two ACE degradation processes was determined separately. The sonolysis pretreatment allowed reaching almost 40% acetamiprid conversion within 30 min of reaction. Pursuing with the photodegradation reaction in the presence of N-GO-ZnO and Pd-GO-ZnO resulted in a maximum conversion of 98% of ACE within 5 h. As for the sonophotocatalysis process, the reaction time was shortened from 5 to 2 h with 100% acetamiprid conversion. In addition, the photocatalysts were shown to keep their activity even after 5 sonophotocatalytic cycles, thus proving their reusability.

Sustainable Solar Light Photodegradation of Diclofenac by Nano- and Micro-Sized SrTiO3

Currently, photocatalytic reactions under solar illumination have attracted worldwide attention due to the tremendous set of associated environmental problems. Taking sunlight into account, it is indispensable to develop highly effective photocatalysts. Strontium titanate, SrTiO3 (STO), is a cubic perovskite-type semiconductor, an inexpensive material with high thermal stability and corrosion resistance that exhibits a similar energy bandgap to TiO2 and can represent an interesting alternative in photocatalytic applications. Particle size can significantly affect both photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties of a photocatalyst, thus altering the photooxidation of organic pollutants in air or water. In this context, this research aims at investigating the photocatalytic features of nano- and micro-sized commercial STO powders towards the photodegradation of diclofenac (DFC), a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug, widely used as analgesic, antiarthritic, and antirheumatic. Both nano- and micro-STO photocatalysts exhibited remarkable photocatalytic efficiency towards DCF, reaching photodegradation efficiency higher than 90% within one hour. Results obtained in simulated drinking water were also compared to those obtained in ultrapure water. Both STOs showed good stability during recycling tests, maintaining high performances after three cycles. Eventually, active species were identified using various scavengers by trapping holes and radicals generated during the photocatalytic degradation process.

Effect of advanced/hybrid oxidation process involving ultrasonication and ultraviolet radiation (sonophotolysis) on anthocyanin stability: Degradation kinetics and mechanism

The hybrid oxidation effect of ultrasonics (US) and ultraviolet light (UV-A) on Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) stability were examined. For comparison, sonolysis and photolysis experiments were also conducted. The results showed that under hybrid sonophotolysis and sonolysis treatment, C3G degradation undergoes zero-order kinetics, while under photolysis, first-order degradation kinetic prevailed. The degradation rate increases with the increase in US power, with the lowest, was recorded as 0.70 μg/ml/h (14 W/L) and 0.77 μg/ml/h (28 W/L), and highest as 0.80 μg/ml/h (42 W/L). Similarly, the degradation ability of UV photolysis at 400 μW/cm² was weak, which increased with increasing UV power (600 μW/cm²). Overall the sonophotolysis degradation rate was significantly higher than that of the individual effect. With the addition of gallic acid (GA), the degradation of C3G was found lower under sonophotolysis; thus, it could be used as a natural protective agent for C3G during food processing.

Sonoprocessing: From Concepts to Large-Scale Reactors

Intensification of ultrasonic processes for diversified applications, including environmental remediation, extractions, food processes, and synthesis of materials, has received attention from the scientific community and industry. The mechanistic pathways involved in intensification of ultrasonic processes that include the ultrasonic generation of cavitation bubbles, radical formation upon their collapse, and the possibility of fine-tuning operating parameters for specific applications are all well documented in the literature. However, the scale-up of ultrasonic processes with large-scale sonochemical reactors for industrial applications remains a challenge. In this context, this review provides a complete overview of the current understanding of the role of operating parameters and reactor configuration on the sonochemical processes. Experimental and theoretical techniques to characterize the intensity and distribution of cavitation activity within sonoreactors are compared. Classes of laboratory and large-scale sonoreactors are reviewed, highlighting recent advances in batch and flow-through reactors. Finally, examples of large-scale sonoprocessing applications have been reviewed, discussing the major scale-up and sustainability challenges.

Solar Light Photoactive Floating Polyaniline/TiO2 Composites for Water Remediation

In the present study, the development of innovative polyurethane-polyaniline/TiO2 modified floating materials applied in the sorption and photodegradation of rhodamine B from water matrix under solar light irradiation is reported. All the materials were fabricated with inexpensive and easy approaches and were properly characterized. The effect of the kind of polyaniline (PANI) dopant on the materials' behavior was investigated, as well as the role of the conducting polymer in the pollutant abatement on the basis of its physico-chemical characteristics. Rhodamine B is removed by adsorption and/or photodegradation processes depending on the type of doping agent used for PANI protonation. The best materials were subjected to recycle tests in order to demonstrate their stability under the reaction conditions. The main transformation products formed during the photodegradation process were identified by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS). The results demonstrated that photoactive floating PANI/TiO2 composites are useful alternatives to common powder photocatalysts for the degradation of cationic dyes.

Synthesis and Characterization of Carbon and Carbon-Nitrogen Doped Black TiO2 Nanomaterials and Their Application in Sonophotocatalytic Remediation of Treated Agro-Industrial Wastewater

The conventional open ponding system employed for palm oil mill agro-effluent (POME) treatment fails to lower the levels of organic pollutants to the mandatory standard discharge limits. In this work, carbon doped black TiO₂ (CB-TiO₂) and carbon-nitrogen co-doped black TiO₂ (CNB-TiO₂) were synthesized via glycerol assisted sol-gel techniques and employed for the remediation of treated palm oil mill effluent (TPOME). Both the samples were anatase phase, with a crystallite size of 11.09–22.18 nm, lower bandgap of 2.06–2.63 eV, superior visible light absorption ability, and a high surface area of 239.99–347.26 m²/g. The performance of CNB-TiO₂ was higher (51.48%) compared to only (45.72%) CB-TiO₂. Thus, the CNB-TiO₂ is employed in sonophotocatalytic reactions. Sonophotocatalytic process based on CNB-TiO₂, assisted by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and operated at an ultrasonication (US) frequency of 30 kHz and 40 W power under visible light irradiation proved to be the most efficient for chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. More than 90% of COD was removed within 60 min of sonophotocatalytic reaction, producing the effluent with the COD concentration well below the stipulated permissible limit of 50 mg/L. The electrical energy required per order of magnitude was estimated to be only 177.59 kWh/m³, indicating extreme viability of the proposed process for the remediation of TPOME.

Piezo-enhanced photocatalytic diclofenac mineralization over ZnO

The degradation of diclofenac has been realized for the first time by a piezo-enhanced sonophotocatalytic approach based on ZnO. The sonophotocatalytic degradation showed a slight enhancement in the degradation of the parent compound, whereas strong synergistic effects were observed for the mineralization process when suitable ZnO morphologies are used, reaching 70% of complete degradation of 25 ppm diclofenac using 0.1 g/L ZnO in 360 min. Tests in a complex water matrix show enhanced diclofenac removal, outperforming a TiO2 benchmark photocatalyst. These promising experimental results promote this process as a good alternative to traditional degradation approaches for remediation of real water matrices.

Application of advanced materials in sonophotocatalytic processes for the remediation of environmental pollutants

Significant advances in various industrial processes have resulted in the discharge of toxic pollutants into the environment. Consequently, it is essential to develop efficient wastewater treatment processes to reduce water contamination and increase recycling/reuse. Photocatalytic degradation is considered as an efficient method for the degradation of toxic pollutants in industrial wastewater. However, the use of photocatalytic approaches is associated with numerous limitations, such as lengthy procedures and the necessity for large amounts of catalysts. Hence, it has been proposed that photocatalysis could be combined with other techniques, including sonolysis, electrochemical, photothermal, microwave, ultrafiltration, and biological reactor. The integration of photocatalysis with sonolysis could be remarkably beneficial for environmental remediation. The combination of these processes has the advantages of using uniformly dispersed catalysts, regeneration of the catalyst surface, improved mass transfer, enhanced surface area due to smaller catalyst particles, and production of more active radicals for the degradation of organic pollutants. In this review, an overview on employing sonophotocatalysis for the removal of toxic organic contaminants from aqueous environments is provided. Additionally, the limitations of photocatalysis alone and the fundamental sonophotocatalytic mechanistic pathways are discussed. The importance of utilizing advanced two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials in sonophotocatalysis and the common synthetic approaches for the preparation of 2D materials are also highlighted. Lastly, the review provides comprehensive insights into different materials based on metal oxides, chalcogenides, graphene, and metal organic frameworks (MOFs), which are involved in sonophotocatalytic processes employed for the remediation of environmental pollutants.

Toward Scaling-Up Photocatalytic Process for Multiphase Environmental Applications

Recently, we have witnessed a booming development of composites and multi-dopant metal oxides to be employed as novel photocatalysts. Yet the practical application of photocatalysis for environmental purposes is still elusive. Concerns about the unknown fate and toxicity of nanoparticles, unsatisfactory performance in real conditions, mass transfer limitations and durability issues have so far discouraged investments in full-scale applications of photocatalysis. Herein, we provide a critical overview of the main challenges that are limiting large-scale application of photocatalysis in air and water/wastewater purification. We then discuss the main approaches reported in the literature to tackle these shortcomings, such as the design of photocatalytic reactors that retain the photocatalyst, the study of degradation of micropollutants in different water matrices, and the development of gas-phase reactors with optimized contact time and irradiation. Furthermore, we provide a critical analysis of research–practice gaps such as treatment of real water and air samples, degradation of pollutants with actual environmental concentrations, photocatalyst deactivation, and cost and environmental life-cycle assessment.
