Abstract
Pigs serve as critical reservoirs and amplifiers for numerous zoonotic viral diseases, presenting substantial public health challenges in India. This study highlights the epidemiology and emerging trends of key zoonotic viruses associated with pigs, emphasizing their role in endemic and emerging disease dynamics. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) persists as a major concern, with pigs acting as amplifying host, while hepatitis E virus (HEV) remains a prominent cause of viral hepatitis, transmitted via contaminated water and pork products. Emerging high-fatality viral zoonoses caused by Nipah virus (NiV) and recurrent threats from swine influenza virus (SIV) demonstrate that the zoonotic landscape is evolving. Furthermore, zoonotic viruses like rotavirus, pseudorabies (ADV or SuHV-1), porcine astrovirus (PAstV), and Torque teno sus virus (TTSuV) reflect the expanding diversity of pig-associated pathogens in India. Emerging evidence also implicates viruses such as Chandipura virus (CHPV) in localized outbreaks, indicating broader zoonotic potential. Novel risks such as swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) and SARS-CoV-2 emphasize the role of pigs as potential intermediaries for pandemic-prone viruses. This comprehensive study evaluates the prevalence, outbreak dynamics, and public health implications of zoonotic viral diseases of pigs in India, providing valuable direction for developing effective control measures.

Abstract
Acute gastroenteritis is common in infants and children of Sri Lanka. There is limited information on the burden of rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants and children in Sri Lanka but none in adults. Adenovirus gastroenteritis is not previously reported in Sri Lanka. This study is aimed to determine the viral etiology of acute gastroenteritis in hospitalized infants, children and adults of two geo-climatically different provinces of Sri Lanka. Diarrhoeic specimens from patients hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Western (n = 300) and Central (n = 271) provinces of Sri Lanka were tested for rotavirus and enteric adenovirus antigens by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay. In Western and Central provinces, overall positivity was 25.3 and 44.7% for rotavirus, 1.7 and 3.3% for enteric adenoviruses and, 0.7 and 1.5% for co-infections with rotavirus and adenovirus respectively. In children of Western and Central provinces, the positivity was 32.1 and 52.9% for rotavirus, and 2.2 and 3.4% for enteric adenoviruses respectively, whereas among adults, the positivity was 13.9 and 15.6% for rotavirus, and 0.9 and 0% for enteric adenoviruses respectively. Occurrence of rotavirus gastroenteritis in hospitalized children is significantly higher compared to adults in both Western and Central provinces. Adenovirus gastroenteritis in Sri Lanka occurs at a very low frequency with no significant difference between children and adults in both provinces. Rotavirus and adenovirus co-infection also occurs at a very low frequency.

Abstract
Rotavirus is one of the leading causes of diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide. In this study, we investigated the impact of rotavirus vaccination on the prevalence of diarrheal disease among children under five years of age in India. Research on the impact of the rotavirus vaccine on reducing diarrheal disease is therefore important in contributing to the growing body of evidence on the effectiveness of this intervention in improving child health outcomes. We adopted multivariate logistic regression and propensity score matching analysis to examine the association between diarrhea and the rotavirus vaccine. The bivariate analysis finding shows that the prevalence of diarrhea was remarkably higher (9.1%) among children who had not received rotavirus and the prevalence was 7.5%, 7.5%, and 7.2% among children who received one dose, two doses, and three rotavirus doses (all) respectively. The result of multivariate logistic regression shows that children who received all three doses of the rotavirus vaccine were 16% less likely to experience diarrhea compared to those who did not receive any rotavirus vaccine. Our analysis also found that the prevalence of diarrhea decreased significantly in the years following the introduction of the vaccine. The results of this study suggest that the rotavirus vaccine has a significant impact on reducing childhood diarrheal disease in India. These results have the potential to inform policy decisions and enable healthcare professionals to concert their efforts in reducing the diarrheal disease burden and its timely prevention in children. The study will also contribute to the existing literature on the impact of rotavirus vaccination in reducing the prevalence of diarrhea among children in India.

Abstract
In Italy, despite the documented positive effects of rotavirus (RV) vaccination on reducing the burden of RV disease, an updated national assessment of its impact on clinical outcomes is still lacking. This study aims to analyze the implementation of RV vaccination in Italy, evaluating its impact on discharges for acute pediatric gastroenteritis (AGE). A retrospective analysis, including hospital discharge records and data on vaccination coverage for children aged 0-71 months from 2009 to 2019, was conducted. We examined trends in hospital discharge standardized incidence before and after vaccine introduction using a negative binomial mixture model with fixed effects to evaluate the impact of universal vaccination. The percentage of vaccination coverage increased over the years, from <5% between 2009 and 2013 to 26% in 2017, reaching 70% in 2019. The standardized incidence of discharges decreased over the period from 16.6/100,000 inhabitants in 2009-2013 to 9.9/100,000 inhabitants in 2018-2019. In this phase, about 15% of the estimated hospital discharges were avoided compared with those estimated in the first phase. The implementation of RV vaccination reduced AGE incidence discharges in children aged 0-71 months. Further efforts are needed to continue monitoring the vaccination effect over time and to increase vaccination coverage.

BackgroundTwo rotavirus (RV) vaccines were licensed in Greece in late 2006 and included in the national immunisation programme in 2012.AimTo study the epidemiology and genotype distribution of RV in children during the post-vaccination period and assess the impact of increased vaccination coverage.MethodsIn a prospective multicentre hospital-based study, hospitalised children (≤ 16 years) with an RV-positive faecal sample were recruited. Epidemiological and genotyping analyses were performed; periods of low (2008-12) and moderate (2012-20) RV vaccination coverage were compared. Statistical analysis was performed with a chi-squared or Mann-Whitney U test and logistic regression.ResultsA total of 3,874 children (55.6% male; n = 2,153) with median age of 1.4 years (IQR: 0.5-3.3) were studied during 2008-20. Most RV-infected children were aged ≤ 3 years (72.2%) and hospitalised during December-May (69.1%). Common RV genotypes (G1P[8], G2P[4], G3P[8], G4P[8], G9P[8], G12P[8]) were detected in 92.2% of samples; G-P combinations with prevalence above 1% were G4P[8] (44.1%), G1P[8] (25.4%), G2P[4] (14.9%), G9P[8] (3.5%), G12P[8] (2.2%), G3P[8] (2.1%), other (4.3%) and mixed (3.5%). Of all samples, 97.6% were homotypic or partially heterotypic to vaccines' genotypes. With moderate vaccination coverage, the seasonal peak was detected earlier, children were older and partially or fully heterotypic genotypes were increased (p < 0.001).ConclusionsIn the era of moderate RV vaccination coverage in Greece, epidemiology of RV in hospitalised children seemed to change. However, most circulating genotypes remain homotypic or partially heterotypic to RV vaccines. Continuous epidemiological surveillance and genotyping are important to monitor possible changes arising from RV vaccines' implementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies found conflicting results about the effect of rotavirus (RV) vaccination on seizure hospitalizations in children younger than 5 years old. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the evidence of the impact of RV vaccination on the prevention of seizure hospitalizations in children. METHODS A systematic review was conducted in the electronic database MEDLINE of all observational studies in children younger than 5 years old published since 2006. Two reviewers performed title/abstract, full-text review, and data extraction. RESULTS Thirteen studies met eligibility criteria. Nine studies reported a significant reduction in seizure hospitalizations upon RV vaccine introduction, three studies reported an absence of significant impact, and one study reported a significant rise in seizure hospitalization after the introduction of RV vaccines. LIMITATIONS The great variability between study designs, case definitions and potential biases prevent quantifying the impact of RV vaccination against seizure hospitalizations. CONCLUSIONS RV vaccination might prevent seizure hospitalizations in children; however, robust, and well-designed studies are needed to better determine the strength of this association.

Abstract
Rotavirus (RV) is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE), particularly in infants. In 2006, the high efficacy of oral RV vaccines (RVVs, RotarixTM and RotaTeqTM) was demonstrated. Voluntary RVV started in Japan in 2011, and in October 2020 were launched as universal oral RVVs in Japan. However, the impact of changes from voluntary to universal RVVs has not been studied in a primary emergency medical center in Japan. We investigated changes in the number of pediatric patients with AGE after introducing universal RVVs in our center. A clinical database of consecutive patients aged <16 who presented to Kobe Children’s Primary Emergency Medical Center between 1 April 2016 and 30 June 2022 was reviewed. After implementing universal RVVs, fewer children presented with RV-associated AGE (the reduction of proportion of the patients in 2022 was −61.7% (all ages), −57.9% (<1 years), −67.8% (1−<3 years), and −61.4% (3−<5 years) compared to 2019). A similar decrease in those of age who were not covered by the universal RVV was observed. There was a significant decline in the number of patients with AGE during the RV season who presented to the emergency department after implementing universal RVVs.

Abstract
The leading cause of gastroenteritis among young children worldwide is the Group A rotaviruses (RV), which produce a wide range of symptoms, from a limited diarrhea to severe dehydration and even death. After an RV infection, immunity is not complete and less severe re-infections usually occur. These infections could be ameliorated by nutritional interventions with bioactive compounds, such as prebiotics. The aim of this research was to study the impact of a particular galactooligosaccharide (B-GOS) on the RV symptomatology and immune response during two consecutive infections. Lewis neonatal rats were inoculated with SA11 (first RV infection) on day 6 of life and with EDIM (second RV infection) on day 17 of life. B-GOS group was administered by oral gavage with a daily dose of B-GOS between days three to nine of life. Clinical and immunological variables were assessed during both infective processes. In the first infection, after the prebiotic intervention with B-GOS, a lower incidence, duration, and overall severity of the diarrhea (p < 0.05) was observed. In addition, it improved another severity indicator, the fecal weight output, during the diarrhea period (p < 0.05). The second RV infection failed in provoking diarrhea in the groups studied. The immune response during first infection with SA11 was not affected by B-GOS administration and had no impact on second infection, but the prebiotic intervention significantly increased IFN-γ and TNF-α intestinal production after the second infection (p < 0.05). In summary, B-GOS supplementation is able to reduce the incidence and severity of the RV-associated diarrhea and to influence the immune response against RV infections.
