Sorption removal of phthalate esters and bisphenols to biofilms from urban river: From macroscopic to microcosmic investigation

Potential mechanism of biochar enhanced degradation of oxytetracycline by Pseudomonas aeruginosa OTC-T

Extensive use of oxytetracycline (OTC) and the generation of its corresponding resistance genes have resulted in serious environmental problems. Physical-biological combined remediation is an attractive method for OTC degradation because of its high remediation efficiency, stability, and environmental friendliness. In this study, an effective OTC-degrading strain identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa OTC-T, was isolated from chicken manure. In the degradation experiment, the degradation rates of OTC in the degradation systems with and without the biochar addition were 92.71-100 % and 69.11-99.59 %, respectively. Biochar improved the tolerance of the strain to extreme environments, and the OTC degradation rate increased by 20.25 %, 18.61 %, and 13.13 % under extreme pH, temperature, and substrate concentration conditions, respectively. Additionally, the degradation kinetics showed that biochar increased the reaction rate constant in the degradation system and shortened the degradation period. In the biological toxicity assessment, biochar increased the proportion of live cells by 17.63 % and decreased the proportion of apoptotic cells by 58.87 %. Metabolomics revealed that biochar had a significant effect on the metabolism of the strains and promoted cell growth and reproduction, effectively reducing oxidative stress induced by OTC. This study elucidates how biochar affects OTC biodegradation and provides insights into the future application of biochar-assisted microbial technology in environmental remediation.

The seasonality of the concentration of endocrine phenolic compounds in the matter attached to the surface of microplastics

Rapid biofilm formation on microplastic (MP) surfaces in marine environments and the tendency of hydrophobic pollutants to bioaccumulate may increase the exposure of organisms to ingested plastics and transport pollutants far from their sources. The role of the matter attached to MPs (MaM) in the interactions between MPs and other pollutants in marine environments is poorly understood. This paper studies pollutant sorption in MaM for three phenolic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs): bisphenol A (BPA), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP), and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP). Polypropylene (PP), expanded polystyrene (EPS), and polylactide (PLA) MPs were exposed to an environment conducive to biofouling (Vistula Lagoon, Baltic Sea) for four weeks in summer, spring, and winter. The concentrations of EDCs in MaM and the suspended particulate matter (SPM) were similar and were 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than those in water and sediment. The type and morphology of the polymers were less significant for determining the concentrations of EDCs in MaM than the season. The concentrations were higher in the growing season than in winter. EDCs increased linearly with the increase in particulate organic carbon. The relationships between organic carbon partition coefficients and octanol/water partition coefficients indicate that hydrophobic partitioning into organic matter was the dominant mechanism of 4-t-OP and 4-NP binding in MaM and in SPM. For BPA, additional sorption mechanisms seem to be significant. In addition to the direct sorption from ambient water, the binding of phytoplankton-derived particles, most probably via attachment to extracellular polymeric substances, appears to be a source of EDCs in MPs. Rough estimates showed that the largest load of particulate matter and EDCs was attached to expanded polystyrene. This study suggests that the potential negative impacts of MPs on the environment are seasonal and that low-density porous plastics can be particularly effective carriers of large EDC loads.

Prevalence, distribution, accumulation, and risk of environmental corticosteroids and estrogens in biofilms from the Pearl River Delta

Biofilms play a significant role in the biogeochemical processing of organic matter and the environmental fate of emerging pollutants. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of 32 endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including 24 environmental corticosteroids (ECs) and 8 environmental estrogens (EEs), in natural biofilms from the Pearl River system. Their association between biofilms and water and environmental risk were assessed. The ECs and EEs ubiquitously occurred in the biofilms, ranging from <0.61-6.57 ng/g and <0.8-2535 ng/g, respectively. Temporally, there was no obvious variance in either ECs or EEs in the biofilms during the winter and summer, and their concentrations exhibited a spatial trend of upward to midstream, descending downstream, and then seaward attenuation at the estuary. For ECs and EEs, the similar levels of field-derived bioconcentration factors (BCFs) (logarithm values: 2.42-2.86 and 2.72-2.98, respectively) and biofilm organic carbon-normalized partitioning coefficients (Kboc) (3.39-3.69 and 3.35-3.95) suggest the comparable potential of accumulation and sorption by biofilms between these two classes of EDCs. In addition, higher values of BCF and Kboc for the EEs were found in winter and were correspondingly comparable to their distribution coefficients (Kd) and Koc derived from suspended particles and sediment, revealing that biofilms are a competitive environmental compartment for capturing EDCs, particularly during the mature period. A positive logKboc-logKow relationship suggests hydrophobic partitioning as a primary interaction mechanism between the biofilm and EEs. Moreover, high risks from biofilm-associated ECs and EEs might have posed to the fluvial ecosystem. This study provides original insights into the occurrence, fate, and risk of ECs in natural biofilms for the first time and demonstrates that biofilms may not only serve as reservoirs but also serve as sentinels for fluvial EDC contamination. These results contribute to the further understanding of the behavior and fate of EDCs in aquatic environments.

The fate of phthalate acid esters in wastewater treatment plants and their impact on receiving waters

Phthalates (PAEs) are gaining attention and being researched as an endocrine disruptor as global plastic use surge. There is an urgent need to explore the key factors affecting the removal of PAEs from wastewater and the impact of wastewater effluent on receiving water. Here we investigated the levels and distribution patterns of 16 typical PAEs in surface water and five wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) along the Dongyang River from Yiwu, China, collecting 42 surface water and 31 wastewater samples. We found that influent PAEs concentration and treatment process were the key factors affecting the degradation efficiency of PAEs in primary and secondary treatment, respectively. In primary treatment, long-chain PAEs were more easily removed (and sometimes less likely to accumulate) than short-chain PAEs, regardless of the influent PAEs concentration (a key factor in primary treatment), while in secondary treatment, short-chain PAEs were easily removed regardless of the treatment process (a factor in secondary treatment). This was not the case for long-chain PAEs, which were only more readily removed in the A/A/O process. In addition, by comparing the significant differences between wastewater and surface water, we found that the total PAEs in the treated effluent were significantly lower than in surface water upstream and in built-up urban areas, indicating that wastewater discharges in the study area did not increase PAEs in the receiving water. Finally, river in the city center and artificial treatment facilities in the study area were identified as requiring priority attention. The results of this study can serve as a model for controlling PAEs in other similar developing cities in China and provide valuable information on the fate of endocrine disruptor from wastewater treatment in China and their impact on surface water.

Immobilization of Biomass Materials for Removal of Refractory Organic Pollutants from Wastewater

In the field of environmental science and engineering, microorganisms, enzymes and algae are promising biomass materials that can effectively degrade pollutants. However, problems such as poor environmental adaptability, recycling difficulties, and secondary pollution exist in the practical application of non-immobilized biomass materials. Biomass immobilization is a novel environmental remediation technology that can effectively solve these problems. Compared with non-immobilized biomass, immobilized biomass materials have the advantages of reusability and stability in terms of pH, temperature, handling, and storage. Many researchers have studied immobilization technology (i.e., methods, carriers, and biomass types) and its applications for removing refractory organic pollutants. Based on this, this paper reviews biomass immobilization technology, outlines the mechanisms and factors affecting the removal of refractory organic pollutants, and introduces the application of immobilized biomass materials as fillers for reactors in water purification. This review provides some practical references for the preparation and application of immobilized biomass materials and promotes further research and development to expand the application range of this material for water purification.

The Roles of Different Fractions in Freshwater Biofilms in the Photodegradation of Methyl Orange and Bisphenol A in Aqueous Solutions

Freshwater biofilms play an important role in the migration and transformation of organic pollutants, especially under illumination conditions. Nonetheless, the roles of variable fractions in freshwater biofilms, e.g., extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), microbial cells and original biofilms, in promoting the photodegradation of trace organic pollutants remain largely unclear. In this study, two contaminants, i.e., methyl orange (MO) and bisphenol A (BPA), were selected, and the roles of different fractions in freshwater biofilms in their photodegradation performances were investigated. After dosing 696 mg/L SS biofilm harvested from an effluent-receiving river, the direct photodegradation rate of MO and BPA was increased 8.7 times and 5.6 times, respectively. River biofilm EPS contained more aromatic fractions, chromogenic groups and conjugated structures than biofilm harvested from a less eutrophic pond, which might be responsible for the enhanced photodegradation process. The quenching experiments suggested that when EPS fractions derived from river biofilm were dosed, ³EPS* was the major reactive oxygen species during the photodegradation of MO and BPA. Meanwhile, for EPS derived from the pond biofilm, ·OH/¹O₂ was predominantly responsible for the enhanced photodegradation. Batch experimental results suggested that the cells and EPS in river biofilms could collaboratively interact with each other to enhance the preservation of reactive species and protection of microbes, thus facilitating the photoactivity of biofilms. Our results might suggest that biofilms generated from eutrophic waterbodies, such as effluent-receiving rivers, could play a more important role in the photodegradation processes of contaminants.

Bioaccessibility of Microplastic-Associated Antibiotics in Freshwater Organisms: Highlighting the Impacts of Biofilm Colonization via an In Vitro Protocol

Microplastics in the environment can be colonized by microbes capable of forming biofilms, which may act as reactive coatings to affect the bioaccessibility of pollutants in organisms. This study investigated the dynamic evolution of biofilm colonization on microplastics and its impacts and mechanisms on the bioaccessibility of microplastic-associated sulfamethazine (SMT) via microcosm incubation in surface water and sediment. After 60 days of incubation, the microbial communities formed in microplastics were distinct and more diverse than those untethered in surroundings, and photoaging treatment decreased the affinity of biofilms on microplastics due to decreased hydrophobicity. Biofilm formation further enhanced the desorption and bioaccessibility of microplastic-sorbed SMT in organisms. In vitro experiments indicated that the critical effects were mainly related to the stronger interaction of gastrointestinal components (i.e., pepsin, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and NaT) with biofilm components (e.g., extracellular polymer substances) than with the pure surface of microplastics, which competed for binding sites in microplastics for SMT more significantly. Photoaging decreased the enhancing effects of biofilms due to their lower accumulation in aged microplastics. This study is the first attempt to reveal the role of biofilms in the bioaccessibility of microplastics with associated antibiotics and provide insights into the combined risk of microplastics in the environment.

Effects of lead pollution on bacterial communities in biofilm attached to submerged plants

Submerged plants and biofilms have significant advantages in hydro-ecology rehabilitation, but their tolerance and physiological responses to heavy metal stress have thus far been under-investigated. This study investigated the influence of lead on physiological and biochemical responses, as well as variation in bacterial communities and functional characteristics of submerged plant biofilms. The results showed that chlorophyll a content of two submerged plants decreased with increased lead concentration. The concentration of malondialdehyde of both submerged plants was higher under high lead concentrations than under low lead concentrations, and the concentrations of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide in Vallisneria natans were more stable. The antioxidant enzyme systems of the two plants played protective roles against lead stress. High lead concentration can inhibit the bacterial community and lead to decreased diversity. The most abundant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria (40.9%), Cyanobacteria (21.5%), and Bacteroidetes (14.3%). Proteobacteria abundance decreased with increased lead concentration, while Cyanobacteria abundance increased. The lead concentration in plants (19.7%, P < 0.01) and the lead concentration in aquatic environment (17.7%, P < 0.01) were significantly correlated with variation in bacterial communities. High lead concentration inhibits the activity of these bacteria related to the conversion of nitrogen and sulfur.

Disentangling the influence of microplastics and their chemical additives on a model detritivore system

Microplastics (MPs) can negatively impact freshwater organisms via physical effects of the polymer itself and/or exposure to chemicals added to plastic during production to achieve desired characteristics. Effects on organisms may result from direct exposure to plastic particles and/or chemical additives or effects may manifest as indirect effects through ecological interactions between organisms (e.g., reduced food availability that impairs a consumer). To disentangle these issues, we used a simplified freshwater food web interaction comprising microbes and macroinvertebrate detritivores to evaluate the toxicity of 1) polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs without added chemicals (virgin), 2) the common chemical additive dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and 3) PVC MPs with incorporated DBP. Exposure to virgin PVC MPs (0.33 and 3.3 mg/L) caused negligible ecological effect with the exception of reduced macroinvertebrate feeding rates at 3.3 mg/L. Exposure to DBP (1 mg/L) both individually and when incorporated into the PVC MPs negatively impacted all tested endpoints, including microbial and macroinvertebrate respiration, feeding rate and assimilation efficiency. DBP leached rapidly from the MPs into the water, and also accumulated in macroinvertebrates and their food, providing multiple routes of exposure. Our findings suggest that additives which are intentionally incorporated into MPs could play a key role in MP toxicity and contribute to the disruption of key ecological interactions underpinning ecosystem processes, such as leaf litter decomposition.

Insights into photocatalytic degradation of phthalate esters over MSnO3 perovskites (M = Mg, Ca): Experiments and density functional theory

In this study, the physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of two kinds of stannate perovskite oxides (MgSnO₃ and CaSnO₃) were investigated under simulated sunlight, where dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP) were selected as the probe pollutants. The results of photochemical characterization showed that MgSnO₃ perovskite exhibited better photocatalytic performance than CaSnO₃ perovskite. MgSnO₃ perovskite could effectively degrade 75% of DMP and 79% of DEP through pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics, which remained good in pH 3.0 to 9.0. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization indicated that photogenerated holes (h⁺), superoxide (O₂^-), and hydroxyl radicals (OH) worked in the photo-degradation, while O₂^- played the most important role. Furthermore, intermediates identification and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to explore the degradation mechanism. For both DMP and DEP, the reactive oxygen species (ROS, including O₂^- and OH) were responsible for the hydroxylation of benzene ring and the breaking of the aliphatic chain, while h⁺ was prone to break the aliphatic chain. This work is expected to provide new insights on the photocatalytic mechanism of stannate perovskites for environmental remediation.

Effects of biofouling on the uptake of perfluorinated alkyl acids by organic-diffusive gradients in thin films passive samplers

While organic-diffusive gradients in thin films (o-DGT) passive samplers have been used to assess organic contaminants in water, the effects of biofouling on accurate analyte quantification by o-DGT are poorly understood. We evaluated the effects of biofouling on the uptake of six common perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) using a previously developed polyacrylamide-WAX (weak anion exchange) o-DGT without a filter membrane. Linear uptake (R² > 0.91) over 21 days was observed in fouled samplers. The measured sampling rates (R_s) and accumulated masses of PFAS in pre-fouled o-DGT were significantly lower (p < 0.05, 20-39% relative error) than in control-fouled samplers. However, compared to clean o-DGT (no biofouling), the R_s of most PFAS in control-fouled samplers (i.e., those with clean diffusive and binding gels initially) were not affected by biofouling. Under flowing (∼5.8 cm s^-1) and static conditions, the measured diffusive boundary layer (DBL) thicknesses for clean o-DGT were 0.016 and 0.082 cm, respectively, whereas the effective in situ biofilm thicknesses for fouled o-DGT were 0.018 and 0.14 cm, respectively. These results suggest that biofilm growth does not have significant effects on target PFAS sampling by o-DGT under typical flowing conditions (≥2 cm s^-1). However, rapid surface growth of biofilm on o-DGT deployed in quiescent waters over long periods of time may exacerbate the adverse effects of biofilms, necessitating the estimation of biofilm thickness in situ. This study provides new insights for evaluating the capability of o-DGT samplers when biofilm growth can be significant.

Effects of biofilm on metal adsorption behavior and microbial community of microplastics

In this study, the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on the biofilm-developed polystyrene (PS) microplastics (MPs) was compared with the virgin PS (V-PS) and UV-aged PS (UV-PS). The results demonstrated that the biofilm could enhance the adsorption abilities onto MPs more than UV radiation. The intra-particle diffusion model suggested that the adsorption on V-PS was dominated by intra-particle diffusion, while the adsorption rate was controlled by the binding diffusion on UV-PS and biofilm-developed PS (Bio-PS). Compared with the V-PS and UV-PS, the Bio-PS showed the largest adsorption capacity based on the Freundlich isotherm model, which indicated that the adsorption of heavy metals onto Bio-PS was multilayer and heterogeneous. The adsorption mechanism of Bio-PS contained physical adsorption, chemisorption, and biosorption. These Bio-PS adsorption types participated in both oxygen and nitrogen groups. Based on the 16S rRNA analysis, the diversity of the microbial community with biofilm changed to a certain extent after the adsorption of heavy metals. Furthermore, the stress of lead (Pb) adsorption had a higher impact on the microbial community distribution and the PS biofilm. This study illustrated how the formation of biofilms can highly affect the adsorption behavior of MPs as well as the microbial community of MPs.

Propelling the practical application of the intimate coupling of photocatalysis and biodegradation system: System amelioration, environmental influences and analytical strategies

The intimate coupling of photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) possesses an enhanced ability of recalcitrant contaminant removal and energy generation, owing to the compact communication between biotic components and photocatalysts during the system operation. The photocatalysts in the ICPB system could dispose of noxious contaminants to relieve the external pressure on microorganisms which could realize the mineralization of the photocatalytic degradation products. However, due to the complex components in the composite system, the mechanism of the ICPB system has not been completely understood. Moreover, the variable environmental conditions would play a significant role in the ICPB system performance. The further development of the ICPB scheme requires clarification on how to reach an accurate understanding of the system condition during the practical application. This review starts by offering detailed information on the system construction and recent progress in the system components' amelioration. We then describe the potential influences of relevant environmental factors on the system performance, and the analytical strategies applicable for comprehending the critical processes during the system operation are further summarized. Finally, we put forward the research gaps in the current system and envision the system's prospective application. This review provides a valuable reference for future researches that are devoted to assessing the environmental disturbance and exploring the reaction mechanisms during the practical application of the ICPB system.

Ferrate (VI)-mediated transformation of diethyl phthalate (DEP) in soil: Kinetics, degradation mechanisms and theoretical calculation

Diethyl phthalate (DEP), as a kind of universally used plasticizer, has aroused considerable public concern owing to its wide detection, environmental stability, and potential health risks. In this work, the highly efficient removal of DEP by ferrate (VI) (Fe(VI)) was systematically explored in soil environment. The effects of the oxidant dosages, soil types, as well as the presence of coexisting cations and anions in tested soil on DEP removal were evaluated. When the dosage of Fe(VI) was 20 mM, complete removal of DEP (50 μg/g) was achieved in the tested soil after 2 min of reaction. Furthermore, the removal rate of DEP was closely related to the soil types, and the degradation rates were decreased obviously in red soil (RS), black soil (BS) and paddy soil (PS), probably due to the acidic condition and high content of organic matters. Moreover, the presence of Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and Al³⁺ in soil can inhibit the removal of DEP by Fe(VI), while SO₄^2- has an slightly promotion effect. Six oxidation intermediates were detected in the reaction process of DEP, product analysis revealed that the transformation of DEP was mainly through two pathways, including hydrolysis and hydroxylation reactions, which were probably mediated by oxygen atom transfer process of Fe(VI). Based on the frontier electron density theory calculation, two ester groups of DEP were prone to be attacked by Fe(VI), and the hydroxyl addition tended to occur at the para-position of one of the ester groups on the benzene ring. This study provides a novel approach for phthalate esters removal from soil using Fe(VI) oxidation and shows new insights into the oxidation mechanisms.

Insight into selected emerging micropollutant interactions with wastewater colloidal organic carbon: implications for water treatment and analysis

This study reports how adding a membrane filter (0.45-μm cellulose nitrate filter) between a glass fibre filter and the solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridge affected the GC/MS analysis of 48 emerging organic micropollutants in wastewater. Most of them are widely used as active pharmaceuticals, cosmetic and packaging material ingredients including classes of parabens, benzophenones and bisphenols among other chemicals tested. A high artificial organic carbon (OC) content in wastewater (DOC = 280 ± 14 mg/L) was investigated to gain insight into micropollutants/colloidal OC filter cake interactions. The results show that even with the use of matrix-matched calibration, the introduction of a second (membrane) filtration step can affect the analysis. Both positive, negative and no effects on the theoretical concentrations calculated from the calibration curves with and without additional filtration were observed. Positive effects on the concentration for the same analyte peak area relative to its surrogate standard were the consequence of a reduced signal for the same concentration, while the negative effects are the consequence of increasing signal for the same concentration. Effect types were dependent on the concentration and the nature of the analytes. Results show that bisphenols and parabens significantly interact with colloidal OC. Statistical analysis of molecular descriptor distribution with effect type showed that micropollutants that have a stronger interaction with colloidal OC have significantly higher ability to act as hydrogen bond donors (HBD) and have larger molar volume (MV). All compounds that experienced either positive or negative effects have a significantly higher median logD. However, further exploration within a single class of compounds (parabens, benzophenones and bisphenols) revealed that selected descriptors are unrelated to an effect type. Pearson's correlations showed that a correlation exists for certain concentration levels and groups of compounds between a negative effect and MV and logD and a positive effect with MV, MW and rotatable bond (RB) count.

Electro-Fenton approach in oxidative degradation of dimethyl phthalate - The treatment of aqueous leachate from landfills

Herein, the dimethyl phthalate (DMP) contamination, as an emerging pollutant, has been cost-effectively removed from landfill leachate through an advanced oxidation process, that is the electro-Fenton (EF) process. For this purpose, a quadratic polynomial model was developed via response surface methodology (RSM). Furthermore, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed for evaluating the significance of the proposed assumptions. The actual removal rate of 99.1% was obtained with optimal values of 4 mg L^-1 of initial DMP concentration, 50 mM Na₂SO₄, 600 μL L^-1 H₂O₂, 8-minute electrolytic time, solution pH 3 and 6 mA cm^-2 current density for the process variables and was consistent with the expected 99.6% removal rate. Satisfactory correlation coefficients were obtained, and a non-significant value of 0.0618 for model mismatch confirmed that the proposed model is extremely important and can successfully predict the effectiveness of DMP removal. The kinetics of the process and the effect of the presence of some radical scavengers were studied to understand the exact mechanism of DMP degradation. Therefore, it was observed that the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with DMPs followed the first-order kinetics model. Moreover, it was established that the optimal ratio of H₂O₂/Fe²⁺ mole was 1.6 and the electricity consumption was 0.157 kWh m^-3. The elaborated treatment model used to remove DMP from landfill leachate showed that DMP contamination was effectively removed with a 95.6% removal efficiency in the investigating process.

Organic and inorganic model soil fractions instigate the formation of distinct microbial biofilms for enhanced biodegradation of benzo[a]pyrene

This study conducted the sorption and biodegradation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) by microbial biofilm communities developed on proxies for materials typically found in soils. The half-life of BaP was 4.7 and 2.3 weeks for biofilms on the inorganic carrier (BC_INOR, montmorillonite) and on the organic carrier (BC_OR, humic acid), respectively. In contrast, the half-life was 7.0 weeks for specialized planktonic cultures (PK). The exposure to BaP caused the development of lipid inclusion bodies inside the bacteria of the PK systems and biofilms of the BC_INOR, but not on the biofilms of the BC_OR system. Interestingly, the BC_OR displayed not only the greatest BaP sorption capacity but also the greatest bacterial density and membrane integrity and the shortest bacteria-to-bacteria distances, which were consistent with the increased production of cell surface extracellular polymeric substances on the BC_OR. Both carriers caused a noticeable shift in the bacterial genera during the biodegradation of the BaP. The BC_INOR selected for Rhodococcus, Brucella, Chitinophaga, and Labrys, whereas the BC_OR favored Rhodococcus and Dokdonella. It indicated that ultra-structure and BaP degradation within the organic carrier-attached biofilms differed from the inorganic ones, and suggested that the microstructural heterogeneity and microbial biodiversity from biofilms on the organic carrier promoted biodegradation.

Effects of Weathering on the Sorption Behavior and Toxicity of Polystyrene Microplastics in Multi-solute Systems

Recent studies have demonstrated that weathering modifies the physicochemical properties and sorption behavior of microplastics (MPs). However, little is known about the effects of such weathering on the simultaneous sorption by MPs of different organic pollutants in multi-solute systems. In this study, the role of cosolute properties in the formation of solute multilayers with a hydrophobic primary solute (4-MBC) on pristine and various weathered polystyrene MPs (PSMPs) was examined. Three weathered PSMPs were studied namely, UV-irradiated PS (UV-PS), microbially degraded PS (MD-NPS), and UV-irradiated PS with subsequent microbial degradation (MD-UV-PS). The weathered PSMPs generally exhibited higher degree of oxygenated functionalities with less surface hydrophobicity than pristine particles. Our findings showed that the formation of solute multilayers with hydrophobic cosolutes was drastically suppressed in UV-PS due to more severe competition at hydrophobic sorption sites. Nevertheless, hydrophilic cosolutes contributed to solute multilayer formation with 4-MBC on PSMPs after UV irradiation, probably due to the stronger sorption of hydrophilic compounds to the oxidized surfaces of these particles via enhanced H-bonding. Strikingly, the sorption of 4-MBC by MD-UV-PS was notably enhanced when hydrophobic cosolutes were present. The observed synergistic sorption indicates that adhered biofilms and/or organic matter on MD-UV-PS could sorb the hydrophobic cosolute molecules, and eventually promote sorption of 4-MBC. Our further toxicity tests revealed that such solute multilayers formed on PSMPs inhibited microalgal growth. These results suggest that the fate and biological effects of MP-mediated chemical exposure could be strongly affected by weathering processes and coexistence of multiple organic contaminants in natural environments.

Microplastics as an emerging anthropogenic vector of trace metals in freshwater: Significance of biofilms and comparison with natural substrates

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in freshwater environments, and represent an emerging anthropogenic vector for contaminants, such as trace metals. In this study, virgin expanded polystyrene (PS) particles were placed in a eutrophic urban lake and a reservoir serving as the resource of domestic water for 4 weeks, to develop biofilms on the surface. For comparison, natural adsorbents in the form of suspended particles and surficial sediment were also sampled from these waterbodies. The trace metal adsorption properties of anthropogenic (virgin and biofilm covered microplastics) and natural substrates were investigated and compared via batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption isotherms fitted the Langmuir model, revealed that biofilms could enhance the trace metal adsorption capacity of MPs. However, natural substrates still had a greater adsorption capacity. Biofilms also alter the adsorption kinetics of trace metals onto MPs. The process of adsorption onto virgin MPs was dominated by intraparticle diffusion, whereas film diffusion governed adsorption onto biofilm covered microplastics and natural substrates. The trace metal adsorption of all the substrates was significantly dependent on pH and ionic strength. The adsorption mechanisms were further analyzed by SEM-EDS and FT-IR. The enhancement of adsorption was mainly attributed to complexation with functional groups contained in the biofilms, including carboxyl, amino, and phenyl-OH. Collectively, biofilm development intensifies the role of MPs in the migration and fate of trace metals in freshwater, since it does not give MPs an edge over natural substrates in adsorption.

Biofilms Provide New Insight into Pesticide Occurrence in Streams and Links to Aquatic Ecological Communities

Streambed sediment is commonly analyzed to assess occurrence of hydrophobic pesticides and risks to aquatic communities. However, stream biofilms also have the potential to accumulate pesticides and may be consumed by aquatic organisms. To better characterize risks to aquatic life, the U.S. Geological Survey Regional Stream Quality Assessment measured 93 current-use and 3 legacy pesticides in bed sediment and biofilm from 54 small streams in California across a range of land-use settings. On average, 4 times as many current-use pesticides were detected in biofilm at a site (median of 2) as in sediment (median of 0.5). Of 31 current-use pesticides detected, 20 were detected more frequently in biofilm than in sediment and 10 with equal frequency. Pyrethroids as a class were the most potentially toxic to benthic invertebrates, and of the 9 pyrethroids detected, 7 occurred more frequently in biofilm than sediment. We constructed general additive models to investigate relations between pesticides and 6 metrics of benthic community structure. Pesticides in biofilm improved fit in 4 of the 6 models, and pesticides in sediment improved fit in 2. The results indicate that the sampling of stream biofilms can complement bed-sediment sampling by identification of more current-use pesticides present and better estimation of ecological risks.

Cultivation substrata differentiate the properties of river biofilm EPS and their binding of heavy metals: A spectroscopic insight

River biofilms inevitably serve as recipients of heavy metals including copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) following their introduction in fluvial systems. Nevertheless, the effects of cultivation substrata on the characteristics of river biofilm extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the binding behaviors of heavy metals on biofilms remain unclear. Integrating spectroscopic methods with chemometric analyses, we explored the binding behaviors of Cu(II) and Cd(II) onto biofilm EPS cultivated from two representative substrata at the molecular level. Chemical analysis revealed that biofilm cultivated on polyethylene (PE) pieces contained more non-fluorescent protein fractions, whereas EPS from periphyton grown on mineral, i.e., cobblestones was richer in aromatic fractions and polysaccharides. Excitation-emmision matrix combined with parallel factor analysis suggested a stronger interaction between fluorophores in periphytic EPS with Cu(II) compared to fluorophores in plastic biofilm EPS. Integrated use of infrared spectroscopy and two-dimensional correlation analyses revealed that, during the heavy metal binding processes, the amines and phenolics in plastic biofilm EPS gave the fastest responses to metal binding. While the amides and the aliphatic fractions in periphytic EPS showed a preferential binding to heavy metals. This study differentiates the effects of cultivation substrata on structuring the biofilm EPS characteristics and offers new insights into the environmental behaviors of heavy metal discharge into fluvial systems in river biofilm matrix.

Use of Bacillus-siamensis-inoculated biochar to decrease uptake of dibutyl phthalate in leafy vegetables

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a frequently detected farmland contaminant that is harmful to the environment and human health. In this study, a DBP-degrading endophytic Bacillus siamensis strain T7 was immobilized in rice husk-derived biochar for bioremediation of DBP-polluted agricultural soils. The effects of this microbe-biochar composite on the soil prokaryotic community and the mechanism by which it regulates DBP degradation, were also investigated. A supplement of T7-biochar composite not only significantly boosted DBP biodegradation in soil by raising the DBP degradation rate constant and half-life from 0.1979 d^-1 and 2.3131 d to 0.2434 d^-1 and 2.1062 d, respectively, but also impeded DBP uptake by leafy vegetables. The general bioremediation effect of T7-biochar alliance excelled pure T7 suspensions and biochar, by trapping more DBP and boosting its complete degradation in soil. Besides, the combination of strain T7 and biochar can increase the proportion of some beneficial bacteria and boost the functional diversity of soil prokaryotic community, then to a certain extent may reverse the negative effect of DBP pollution on the agricultural soils. These results indicate that the rice-husk-derived biochar is a proper media when utilizing functional microbes into environmental treatment. Overall, T7-biochar composite is a promising soil modifier for soil bioremediation and the production of DBP-free crops.

Microstructure, bacterial community and metabolic prediction of multi-species biofilms following exposure to di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)

The occurrence and transportation of phthalate esters in biofilms from natural and engineered sources have attracted considerable research interest. However, little information is available highlighting the responses of multi-species biofilms in terms of their physicochemical structure and bacterial community induced by phthalate esters. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a model phthalate eater, was selected to treat multi-species biofilm aggregates, including an attached biofilm from a moving bed bioreactor (MBBR), a periphytic biofilm from a natural source and activated sludge in short-term exposure experiments (120 h). The production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from the three biofilms initially decreased and then slightly increased after exposure to DEHP, consistent with the variation of the most dominant fluorescent compounds consisting of humic-acid-like organic substances. The MBBR and periphytic biofilms secreted more fluorescence compounds than the activated sludge during the exposure period. The organic matter in the EPS was converted into smaller molecules, while limited variation was observed in the functional groups and secondary protein structures. Acinetobacter and Bacillus demonstrated significant increases and were likely the key genera responsible for DEHP degradation. The combined use of spectral, chromatographic and sequencing analyses indicated that the periphytic biofilm was more resistant to DEHP, possibly owing to the presence of more mature assemblages, including cells with higher metabolic activity and a higher diversity within the bacterial community. This study provides insights into the microstructural and bacterial responses of multi-species biofilms following exposure to phthalate esters, and provides important guidance for bioremediation of phthalate esters using periphytic biofilms.

Influence of organic carbon fractions of freshwater biofilms on the sorption for phenanthrene and ofloxacin: The important role of aliphatic carbons

Sorption to biofilms is thought to be a crucial process controlling the fate of trace organic contaminants in aquatic systems. The organic composition of biofilms is regarded as the determining factor in the sorption mechanism of biofilm organic carbon fractions; however, its role is not well known. Here, the sorption of phenanthrene and ofloxacin was modeled with classic and emerging organic contaminants, respectively, by comparatively investigating nine type of freshwater biofilms cultured in a river, lake, and reservoir in spring, summer, and autumn. The chemical features of the nine biofilms were analyzed using elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance. Results showed that the freshwater biofilms were aliphatic-rich natural amorphous solid substances with O-containing functional groups, and their surface polarity was significantly lower than their bulk polarity. All the isotherms of phenanthrene and ofloxacin sorption by the biofilms were linear. The organic carbon-normalized partition coefficient values for phenanthrene and ofloxacin on the nine biofilms ranged from 91.9 to 364.2 L g^-1 and 3.2 to 43.2 L g^-1, respectively. The van der Waals interaction between a majority of aliphatic carbon (73.4%-83.9%) in biofilms and the two sorbates was much stronger than π-π interactions between a minority of aromatic carbon (12.7%-21.7%) and sorbates. The surface polarity of the biofilms regulated polar interactions including the hydrogen bonding and electron donor-acceptor interactions. Both the aliphatic carbon and surface polarity in the biofilms enhanced the sorption of phenanthrene and ofloxacin. The sorption characteristics and mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and antibiotics on biofilms shown in our present and previous studies are different from those of other ubiquitous natural solid materials such as soils and sediments. This study provides insight into the importance of aliphatic carbon fractions of freshwater biofilms for the sorption of classic and emerging organic contaminants.

Residual chemical oxygen demand (COD) fractionation in bio-treated coking wastewater integrating solution property characterization

The refractory nature of residual COD in bio-treated coking wastewater (BTCW) creates barriers for its further treatment and reclamation. It is necessary to fractionate the residual COD in BTCW associated with characterization of solution properties. In this paper, a stepwise process composed of membrane filtration, coagulation, adsorption and ozonation was proposed to fractionate residual COD in the BTCW, in which the COD was stepwise reduced to near zero. In addition, the correlation between COD and water quality indexes as well as solution properties were discussed together with a safety assessment of the water quality. Results showed that the residual COD fractionation percentage contributed by suspended solids, colloids, dissolved organics and reductive inorganic substances in the BTCW was 43.7%, 22.1%, 26.2% and 4.9%, respectively. By stepwise fractionating of these substances, the residual COD was reduced from 168.8 to 5.2 mg L^-1, and the UV₂₅₄ value decreased from 1.90 to 0.15 cm^-1. In addition, the particle size of the dominant substances contributing to the residual COD was smaller than 450 nm. Among these substances, the hydrophobic fraction accounted for 78.66% (in the term of TOC). Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) analysis showed that hydrophobic neutral substances (HON) were the main fluorescence constituent in the BTCW, which was highly removable by adsorption. The residual COD after adsorption was mainly composed of reductive inorganic substances. Apart from pursuit of high COD removal rates, more emphasis should be given to the removal of toxic COD. Correlations were observed between the residual COD and water quality indicators as well as solution properties, providing a guideline for optimized removal of residual COD in the BTCW. In summary, these results gave a referential information about the nature of residual COD in the BTCW for the selection of advanced treatment technologies and the management of water quality safety.
