Pilot-scale evaluation of sulfite-activated ferrate for water reuse applications

Gradient purification of surface water and ultrafiltration membrane fouling mitigation based on Fe(VI) multifunctional integration characteristics: Is a sedimentation unit necessary?

Ferrate (Fe(VI)) can provide oxidation and in-situ coagulation/adsorption for the removal of emerging contaminants and natural organic matter, and can be used in conjunction with ultrafiltration (UF) membrane to enhance the removal of composite contaminants and mitigate UF membrane fouling. Based on the Fe(VI) multifunctional integration characteristics, the study objectively and comprehensively verified the gradient purification of surface water and the UF membrane fouling mitigation by Fe(VI)-UF and sulfite (S(IV)) activated Fe(VI) (S(IV)/Fe(VI))-UF, elucidated the effect of sedimentation unit on the UF mechanism and the membrane fouling behaviors, and revealed the free energy changes throughout the UF process. The experimental results demonstrated that S(IV)/Fe(VI)-UF showed superior purification performance and UF membrane fouling mitigation than Fe(VI)-UF. S(IV)/Fe(VI)-UF achieved removals of sulfamethoxazole, DOC, and UV254 up to 77.73 %, 61.86 %, and 86.33 %, and was able to significantly mitigate UF membrane fouling by prolonging the transition stage and positively shifting the interfacial free energy. Innovatively, the absence of a sedimentation unit was found to adversely affect the initial stages of Fe(VI)-UF and S(IV)/Fe(VI)-UF by lowering the energy barriers, while negligibly affecting cake filtration. Additionally, the water treatment cost of S(IV)/Fe(VI) was 0.3 yuan per ton, indicating notable economic benefits and engineering potential. While deepening the understanding of Fe(VI) multifunctional integration characteristics, the above results provided theoretical and data support for S(IV)/Fe(VI)-UF and Fe(VI)-UF treatment of surface water, and enriched the application scenarios of Fe(VI)-related technologies.

Multiple barriers as an efficient treatment for removing pesticides aiming direct potable reuse: A pilot scale study

Water reuse for potable purposes can represent a realistic source supply of drinking water in areas with water scarcity. Therefore, combining conventional wastewater treatment technologies with advanced technologies is necessary to remove contaminants and obtain high-quality and safe water. In this study, the pesticides and degradation products, atrazine (ATZ), hydroxyatrazine (ATZOH), deethylatrazine (DEA), deisopropylatrazine (DIA), simazine (SMZ), ametryn (AMT), diuron (DIU), 2,4-D, fipronil (FIP), fipronil sulfide (FIP-SF) and fipronil sulfone (FIP-SN) were evaluated in effluent after membrane bioreactor (MBR), effluent after advanced treatment by multiple barriers (MBR, reverse osmosis, UV/H2O2 and activated carbon), in tap water collected in the urban region of Campinas and in the Atibaia River (water supply source from city of Campinas). The pesticide concentrations in the Atibaia River and the post-MBR effluent ranged between 1 and 434 ng L-1 and 1 and 470 ng L-1, respectively. Therefore, the Atibaia River and the post-MBR effluent had the same magnitude pesticide concentrations. In the production of potable water reuse, after the multiple barriers processes, only fipronil (1 ng L-1) and atrazine (3 ng L-1) were quantified in some of the samples. In tap water from Campinas, atrazine, ATZOH, DEA, diuron, and 2,4-D were quantified in concentrations ranging between 3 and 425 ng L-1. Therefore, when comparing drinking water obtained from conventional treatment with potable water reuse, according to the pesticides studied, it is possible to conclude that the advanced treatment used on a pilot scale is promising for use in a potable water reuse plant. However, studies involving more microbiological and chemical parameters should be conducted to classify potable water reuse as drinking water.

Interactions of ferrate(VI) and aquatic humic substances in water treatment

Aquatic humic substances, encompassing humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA), can influence the treatment of ferrate(VI), an emerging water treatment agent, by scavenging Fe(VI) to accelerate its decomposition and hinder the elimination of target micro-pollutants. Meanwhile, HA and FA degrade the water quality through the transformation to disinfection byproducts over disinfection, contribution to water color, and enhanced mobility of toxic metals. However, the interplay with ferrate(VI) and humic substances is not well understood. This study aims to elucidate the interactions of ferrate(VI) with HA and FA for harnessing ferrate(VI) in water treatment. Laboratory investigations revealed distinctive biphasic kinetic profiles of ferrate(VI) decomposition in the presence of HA or FA, involving a 2nd order kinetic reaction followed by a 1st-order kinetic reaction. Both self-decay and reactions with the humic substances governed the ferrate(VI) decomposition in the initial phase. With increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the contribution of self-decomposition to ferrate(VI) decay declined, while humic substance-induced ferrate(VI) consumption increased. To assess relative contributions of the two factors, DOC50% was first introduced to represent the level at which the two factors equally contribute to the ferrate(VI) loss. Notably, DOC50% (11.90 mg/L for HA and 13.10 mg/L for FA) exceeded typical DOC in raw water, implying that self-decay predominantly governs ferrate(VI) consumption. Meanwhile, ferrate(VI) could degrade and remove HA and FA across different molecular weight (MW) ranges, exhibiting treatment capabilities that are either better or, at least, equivalent to ozone. The ferrate(VI) treatment attacked high MW, hydrophobic organic molecules, accompanied by the production of low MW, more hydrophilic compounds. Particularly, FA was more effectively removed due to its smaller molecular sizes, higher solubility, and lower carbon contents. This study provides valuable insights into the effective utilization of ferrate(VI) in water treatment in presence of humic substances.

Novel vacuum UV/ozone/peroxymonosulfate process for efficient degradation of levofloxacin: Performance evaluation and mechanism insight

Vacuum UV (VUV) irradiation has advantage in coupling oxidants for organics removal because VUV can dissociate water to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in situ and decompose oxidants rapidly. In this study, the synergistic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by VUV and ozone (O3) was explored via developing a novel integrated VUV/O3/PMS process, and the performance and mechanisms of VUV/O3/PMS for levofloxacin (LEV) degradation were investigated systematically. Results indicated that VUV/O3/PMS could effectively degrade LEV, and the degradation rate was 1.67-18.79 times of its sub-processes. Effects of PMS dosage, O3 dosage, solution pH, anions, and natural organic matter on LEV removal by VUV/O3/PMS were also studied. Besides, hydroxyl radical and sulfate radical were main ROS with contributions of 49.7% and 17.4%, respectively. Moreover, the degradation pathways of LEV in VUV/O3/PMS process were speculated based on density functional theory calculation and by-products detection. Furthermore, synergistic reaction mechanisms in VUV/O3/PMS process were proposed. The energy consumption of VUV/O3/PMS decreased by 22.6%- 88.1% compared to its sub-processes. Finally, the integrated VUV/O3/PMS process showed satisfactory results in removing LEV in actual waters, manifesting VUV/O3/PMS had great application potential and feasibility in removing organics in wastewater reuse.

Enhanced removal of phenolic compounds by ferrate(VI): Unveiling the Bi(III)-Bi(V) valence cycle with in situ formed bismuth hydroxide as catalyst

The use of 2-hydroxybenzophenone (2-HBP) in personal care products is of great concern due to its potential negative effects on the ecosystem and public health. This paper presents the degradation of 2-HBP by bismuth(III) (Bi3+)-ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42-, Fe(VI)) (Bi3+-Fe(VI) system). Experimental studies at different pH and dosages of Bi3+ and Fe(VI) showed that the Bi3+-Fe(VI) system increased the degradation rate and removal efficiency of 2-HBP compared to Fe(VI) alone. The in situ formed flake-like white flocculent precipitate of Bi(OH)3 showed catalytic performance through the Bi(III)-Bi(V)-Bi(III) valence cycle which was demonstrated through spectroscopic measurements. The hydrogen transfer-mediated reactions between Fe(VI) and Bi(OH)3 as well as subsequent formation of Bi(V) were supported by performing density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations. Seventeen identified transformation products of 2-HBP by Fe(VI) with and without Bi3+ revealed hydroxylation, bond breaking, carboxylation, and polymerization reaction pathways. Significantly, Bi3+ facilitated the polymerization reaction and the dioxygen transfer-mediated hydroxylation reaction pathways. The ions (anions and cations) and humic acids (HA) present in the Bi3+-Fe(VI) system had minimal influence on the removal efficiency of 2-HBP. Reusability tests and use of real water samples as well as toxicity assessments of transformation products unveiled the practical application aspect of the Bi3+-Fe(VI) system. Finally, the results showed that the system exhibits good removal efficiency for all 12 phenolic compounds, indicating theuniversality. The Bi3+-Fe(VI) system may be an easy-to-implement cost-effective method for the catalytic degradation of benzophenones by Fe(VI).

Insights into manganese(VII) enhanced oxidation of benzophenone-8 by ferrate(VI): Mechanism and transformation products

Benzophenones (BPs) are commonly used as UV filters in cosmetics and plastics products and are potentially toxic to the environment. This paper presents kinetics and products of BPs oxidation by ferrate(VI) (FeO₄^2-, Fe(VI)) promoted by permanganate (Mn(VII)) . Degradation of 10.0 µM 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP-8)were determined under different experimental conditions ([Mn(VII)] = 0.5-1.5 µM, [Fe(VI)] = 50-150 µM, and pH = 7.0-10.0). The addition of Mn(VII) traces to Fe(VI)-BP-8 solution enhanced kinetics and efficiency of the removal. Similar enhanced removals were also seen for other BPs (BP-1, BP-3, and BP-4) under optimized conditions. The second-order rate constants (k, M^-1s^-1) of the degradation of BPs showed positive relationship with the energy of the highest occupied orbital (E_HOMO). The possible interaction between Mn(VII) and BP-8 and the enhanced generation of Fe(V)/Fe(IV) and •OH was proposed to facilitate the oxidation of the target benzophenone, supported by in-situ electrochemical measurements, theoretical calculations and reactive species quenching experiments. Thirteen oxidation products of BP-8 suggested hydroxylation, bond breaking, polymerization and carboxylation steps in the oxidation. Toxicity assessments by ECOSAR program showed that the oxidized intermediate products posed a tapering ecological risk during the degradation process. Overall, the addition of Mn(VII) could improve the oxidation efficiency of Fe(VI).

Oxidation of Pharmaceuticals by Ferrate(VI)-Amino Acid Systems: Enhancement by Proline

The occurrence of micropollutants in water threatens public health and ecology. Removal of micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals by a green oxidant, ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42-, Fe(VI)) can be accomplished. However, electron-deficient pharmaceuticals, such as carbamazepine (CBZ) showed a low removal rate by Fe(VI). This work investigates the activation of Fe(VI) by adding nine amino acids (AA) of different functionalities to accelerate the removal of CBZ in water under mild alkaline conditions. Among the studied amino acids, proline, a cyclic AA, had the highest removal of CBZ. The accelerated effect of proline was ascribed by demonstrating the involvement of highly reactive intermediate Fe(V) species, generated by one-electron transfer by the reaction of Fe(VI) with proline (i.e., Fe(VI) + proline → Fe(V) + proline•). The degradation kinetics of CBZ by a Fe(VI)-proline system was interpreted by kinetic modeling of the reactions involved that estimated the rate of the reaction of Fe(V) with CBZ as (1.03 ± 0.21) × 106 M-1 s-1, which was several orders of magnitude greater than that of Fe(VI) of 2.25 M-1 s-1. Overall, natural compounds such as amino acids may be applied to increase the removal efficiency of recalcitrant micropollutants by Fe(VI).
