Changes in description naming for common and proper nouns after left anterior temporal lobectomy

RNA barcode segments for SARS-CoV-2 identification from HCoVs and SARSr-CoV-2 lineages

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the pathogen responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), continues to evolve, giving rise to more variants and global reinfections. Previous research has demonstrated that barcode segments can effectively and cost-efficiently identify specific species within closely related populations. In this study, we designed and tested RNA barcode segments based on genetic evolutionary relationships to facilitate the efficient and accurate identification of SARS-CoV-2 from extensive virus samples, including human coronaviruses (HCoVs) and SARSr-CoV-2 lineages. Nucleotide sequences sourced from NCBI and GISAID were meticulously selected and curated to construct training sets, encompassing 1733 complete genome sequences of HCoVs and SARSr-CoV-2 lineages. Through genetic-level species testing, we validated the accuracy and reliability of the barcode segments for identifying SARS-CoV-2. Subsequently, 75 main and subordinate species-specific barcode segments for SARS-CoV-2, located in ORF1ab, S, E, ORF7a, and N coding sequences, were intercepted and screened based on single-nucleotide polymorphism sites and weighted scores. Post-testing, these segments exhibited high recall rates (nearly 100%), specificity (almost 30% at the nucleotide level), and precision (100%) performance on identification. They were eventually visualized using one and two-dimensional combined barcodes and deposited in an online database (http://virusbarcodedatabase.top/). The successful integration of barcoding technology in SARS-CoV-2 identification provides valuable insights for future studies involving complete genome sequence polymorphism analysis. Moreover, this cost-effective and efficient identification approach also provides valuable reference for future research endeavors related to virus surveillance.

The spatiotemporal dynamics of semantic integration in the human brain

Language depends critically on the integration of lexical information across multiple words to derive semantic concepts. Limitations of spatiotemporal resolution have previously rendered it difficult to isolate processes involved in semantic integration. We utilized intracranial recordings in epilepsy patients (n = 58) who read written word definitions. Descriptions were either referential or non-referential to a common object. Semantically referential sentences enabled high frequency broadband gamma activation (70-150 Hz) of the inferior frontal sulcus (IFS), medial parietal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and medial temporal lobe in the left, language-dominant hemisphere. IFS, OFC and posterior middle temporal gyrus activity was modulated by the semantic coherence of non-referential sentences, exposing semantic effects that were independent of task-based referential status. Components of this network, alongside posterior superior temporal sulcus, were engaged for referential sentences that did not clearly reduce the lexical search space by the final word. These results indicate the existence of complementary cortical mosaics for semantic integration in posterior temporal and inferior frontal cortex.

The Processing Differences between Chinese Proper Nouns and Common Nouns in the Left and Right Hemispheres of the Brain

In this study, we investigated whether there were differences between the processing of Chinese proper nouns and common nouns in the left and that in the right hemispheres of the brain by using a visual half-field technique. The experimental materials included four types of proper nouns (people’s names, landmark names, country names, and brand names), four types of common nouns (animals, fruits and vegetables, tools, and abstract nouns), and pseudowords. Participants were asked to judge whether target words that had been quickly presented in their left or right visual field were meaningful words. The results showed that there was a distinction between the processing of the two types of words in the left and right hemispheres. There was no significant difference in the processing of the two types of nouns in the right hemisphere, but the left hemisphere processed common nouns more effectively than proper nouns. Furthermore, the processing difference of proper nouns between the two hemispheres was less than that of common nouns, suggesting that proper nouns have a smaller lateralization effect than common nouns.

Examining the role of the uncinate fasciculus in proper noun naming: awake brain tumor resections and stereo EEG targeted electrical stimulation multiple case study

While there is strong evidence from lesion and functional imaging studies implicating the left anterior temporal pole (LTP) in naming unique entities, less is known about white matter tracts in category-specific naming. We present evidence that implicates the uncinate fasciculus (UF) in proper noun naming. First, we describe two patients with left LTP gliomas who developed category specific worsening in proper noun naming in real time during awake surgery when the UF was surgically involved . We then describe a third case involving targeted electrical stimulation of the UF using stereo-electroencephalography (sEEG) that resulted in category specific naming disturbance for proper nouns..

Neural correlates of recognition and naming of famous persons and landmarks: A special role for the left anterior temporal lobe

The anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) have been shown to be crucial for recognition and naming of unique entities such as persons and places. In this chapter, we review previous research that identified the neural underpinnings of these processes, and discuss the convergence zone theory of conceptual knowledge and proper name retrieval. Lesion-deficit and neuroimaging studies have found that the temporal poles are essential for recognition and naming of unique persons and places. Research has shown laterality, in that the right anterior temporal pole is specialized for recognition and the left for naming. Here, we analyzed recognition and naming of persons and landmarks in a large neurologic sample (N=244) using the Iowa Famous Faces and Famous Landmarks tests. For both categories, education had a significant effect on recognition and naming performances, but age and gender did not. Lesion-symptom maps revealed lower naming scores for both Faces and Landmarks associated with lesions to the anterior and mesial left temporal lobe. Lower recognition scores were also linked to left temporal lobe damage, possibly due to the method we used for measuring recognition (verbally based). Overall, the results demonstrate the importance of the temporal lobes for recognition and naming of unique persons and places.

Effects of laser interstitial thermal therapy for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy on the structural connectome and its relationship to seizure freedom

OBJECTIVE

Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive surgery for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE), but the effects of individual patient anatomy and location of ablation volumes affect seizure outcomes. The purpose of this study is to see if features of individual patient structural connectomes predict surgical outcomes after LITT for mTLE.

METHODS

This is a retrospective analysis of seizure outcomes of LITT for mTLE in 24 patients. We use preoperative diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to simulate changes in structural connectivity after laser ablation. A two-step machine-learning algorithm is applied to predict seizure outcomes from the change in connectomic features after surgery.

RESULTS

Although node-based network features such as clustering coefficient and betweenness centrality have some predictive value, changes in connection strength between mesial temporal regions predict seizure outcomes significantly better. Changes in connection strength between the entorhinal cortex (EC), and the insula, hippocampus, and amygdala, as well as between the temporal pole and hippocampus, predict Engel Class I outcomes with an accuracy of 88%. Analysis of the ablation location, as well as simulated, alternative ablations, reveals that a more medial, anterior, and inferior ablation volume is associated with a greater effect on these connections, and potentially on seizure outcomes.

SIGNIFICANCE

Our results indicate (1) that seizure outcomes can be retrospectively predicted with excellent accuracy using changes in structural connectivity, and (2) that favorable connectomic changes are associated with an ablation volume involving relatively mesial, anterior, and inferior locations. These results may provide a framework whereby individual pre-operative structural connectomes can be used to optimize ablation volumes and improve outcomes in LITT for mTLE.
