Public attitudes toward stuttering in Malaysia

PURPOSE

This study aims to: (a) measure public attitudes toward stuttering in Malaysia using the Public Opinion Survey of Human Attitudes-Stuttering [POSHA-S], (b) determine how reported attitudes and knowledge related to stuttering compare to existing data, and (c) determine whether there are differences between groups for identified variables.

METHOD

A total of 250 adults (mean age = 29 years; range = 19-60 years) completed the POSHA-S in English. We compared this sample's attitudes toward stuttering to POSHA-S data from other global samples. General linear modeling examined differences in overall stuttering score, beliefs, and self reaction subscores for demographic variables such as age, gender, marital status, parenting, education, employment status, prior exposure to a person who stutters, multilingual, race, and religion.

RESULTS

The Malaysian participants' overall stuttering score and the beliefs and self reactions subscores were all considerably lower (i.e., less positive) than the other samples around the world from the POSHA-S database median values. Being male, receiving a higher education, and knowing someone who stutters were linked to having more positive self reactions, but none of those factors was linked to positive or negative beliefs. Those who had previously been exposed to stuttering scored significantly higher than those who had not.

CONCLUSION

Malaysians may have less positive attitudes toward stuttering than Westerners. More needs to be done to make society more accepting of people who stutter. Future research should aim to find ways to educate and to raise public awareness about stuttering.

Seizure remission rates remain low in a resource-limited country, a multicentre comparison study in Malaysia

Seizure remission rates of 60% with antiseizure medications were reported in developed countries, but might be lower in resource-limited countries. The challenges in epilepsy care in resource-limited regions were highlighted 10 years ago, and still remain an ongoing issue. This study aimed to determine the seizure freedom rates in level-2 epilepsy care centres (centres with general neurologists) compared to level-3/4 centres (centres with epileptologists providing epilepsy surgery evaluation) in Malaysia. This is a retrospective study of 1,347 adult epilepsy patients from two level-2 (n = 290) and two level-3/4 epilepsy care centres (n = 1,057). The seizure remission rates were significantly lower in level-2 centres (42.5%) compared to the level 3/4 centres (61.9%, p < 0.05). Level-2 centres had significantly more patients with undetermined seizure types compared to level-3/4 centres (6.6% vs 3.1%, p < 0.05). Level-3/4 centres had significantly more patients with epilepsy of structural and genetic origins, whereas more patients in level-2 centres had unknown aetiology (46.2% vs. 34.0% in level-3/4, p < 0.05). Level-2 centres had a lower neurologist-to-patient ratio (1:97 vs. 1:50 in level-3/4 centres, p < 0.05). Level-2 centres also had fewer patients, who underwent investigations such as EEG (74.1% vs. 89.6%) and brain MRI (54.1% vs. 72.4%, p < 0.05) in comparison with level-3/4 centres. Our study emphasized the existing challenges in epilepsy care in a resource-limited country to achieve the ideal 60% seizure remission rate.

Attitudes of individuals in Eastern Turkey toward epilepsy and the factors associated with these attitudes

AIM

This study was performed to analyze the attitudes of individuals in eastern Turkey toward epilepsy and the factors associated with these attitudes.

METHODS

Designed as a cross-sectional descriptive study, this study was performed from January 28 to February 8, 2021. A snowball sampling technique was used to select the study sample, and a survey was sent online to individuals aged 18 or above. A total of 617 individuals who filled in this online survey form were included in this research. Data were collected via a personal information form and the Public Attitudes Toward Epilepsy (PATE) scale.

RESULTS

The results showed that the mean scores of the participants on the PATE scale, on its general domain, and on its personal domain were 1.79±0.63, 1.70±0.63, and 1.96±0.77, respectively. Comparing the participants' mean PATE scale scores on the basis of their descriptive characteristics revealed statistically significant differences in the mean scores on the scale and its two domains in terms of age, place of residence, educational level, knowing anyone who had epilepsy or experienced epileptic seizures, and witnessing a person having an epileptic seizure (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Individuals living in eastern Turkey have positive attitudes toward epilepsy. Moreover, it was found that, among all the participants, those who were relatively young, those who lived in a provincial center, those who had a relatively high educational level, those who knew an individual with epilepsy, and those who had witnessed an epileptic seizure have more positive attitudes toward epilepsy than their counterparts.

IMPLICATIONS

It is recommended to design educational programs focusing on raising the level of public awareness and knowledge regarding epilepsy.
