Abstract
The control of luminous radiation has extremely important implications for modern and future technologies as well as in medicine. In this Review, we detail chemical structures and their relevant photophysical features for various groups of materials, including organic dyes such as metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines (and derivatives), other common organic materials, mixed metal complexes and clusters, fullerenes, dendrimeric nanocomposites, polymeric materials (organic and/or inorganic), inorganic semiconductors, and other nanoscopic materials, utilized or potentially useful for the realization of devices able to filter in a smart way an external radiation. The concept of smart is referred to the characteristic of those materials that are capable to filter the radiation in a dynamic way without the need of an ancillary system for the activation of the required transmission change. In particular, this Review gives emphasis to the nonlinear optical properties of photoactive materials for the function of optical power limiting. All known mechanisms of optical limiting have been analyzed and discussed for the different types of materials.

Abstract
Three unusual three-dimensional (3D) tetrazine chromophore-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {(Et4 N)[WS4 Cu3 (CN)2 (4,4'-pytz)0.5 ]}n (1), {[MoS4 Cu4 (CN)2 (4,4'-pytz)2 ]⋅CH2 Cl2 }n (2), and {[WS4 Cu3 (4,4'-pytz)3 ]⋅[N(CN)2 ]}n (3; 4,4'-pytz=3,6-bis(4-pyridyl)tetrazine) have been synthesized and characterized by using FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, gel permeation chromatography, steady-state fluorescence, and thermogravimetric analysis; their identities were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. MOF 1 possesses the first five-connected M/S/Cu (M=Mo, W) framework with an unusual 3D (4(4) ⋅6(6) ) topology constructed from T-shaped [WS4 Cu3 ](+) clusters as nodes and single CN(-) /4,4'-pytz bridges as linkers. MOF 2 features a novel 3D MOF structure with (4(20) ⋅6(8) ) topology, in which the bridging 4,4'-pytz ligands exhibit unique distorted arch structures. MOF 3 displays the first 3D MOF structure based on flywheel-shaped [WS4 Cu3 ](+) clusters with a non-interpenetrating honeycomb-like framework and a heavily distorted "ACS" topology. Steady-state fluorescence studies of 1-3 reveal significant fluorescence emissions. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 1-3 were investigated by using a Z-scan technique with 5 ns pulses at λ=532 nm. The Z-scan experimental results show that the π-delocalizable tetrazine-based 4,4'-pytz ligands contribute to the strong third-order NLO properties exhibited by 1-3. Time-dependent density functional theory studies afforded insight into the electronic transitions and spectral characterization of these functionalized NLO molecular materials.

Abstract
An extraordinary affinity of MoS₄²⁻ for Cu accounts for Mo-induced Cu deficiency in ruminants (molybdenosis) and offers an approach to treating Wilson's disease in humans. Evidence of thiomolybdates in sulfidic natural waters, and possibly even as metastable traces in oxic natural waters, raises the question of how Cu-Mo affinity might affect Cu availability or toxicity in aquatic ecosystems. Stabilities of inorganic Cu-MoS₄²⁻ complexes are characterized and quantified here for the first time. Two remarkably stable Cu(I) dissolved complexes are identified (T = 23°C ± 2°C): Cu₂(HS)₂MoS₄²⁻ and Cu₂S₂MoS₄⁴⁻. In addition, the solubility constant for a precipitate (NH₄CuMoS₄) was measured. Under the extremely reducing conditions in rumen fluids, these complexes will greatly suppress Cu(+) activity, supporting prior conclusions about the mechanism of molybdenosis. In sulfidic natural waters, they help to prevent complete Cu impoverishment, as might otherwise occur by sulfide mineral precipitation. On the other hand, the complexes discovered here are HS⁻-dependent and could not be important in oxic natural waters (with HS⁻ concentrations < 10⁻⁹ M) even if metastable, biogenic MoS₄²⁻ indeed were present as previously conjectured.

Abstract
Theoretical calculations were carried out on some neutral nest-shaped heterothiometallic cluster compounds [MOS(3)Py(5)Cu(3)X] (M=Mo, W; X=F, Cl, Br, I) with the high first static hyperpolarizabilities beta values. The geometries of these cluster compounds were optimized by the restricted DFT method at B3LYP level with LanL2DZ base set without any constrains. In order to understand the relationship between the first static hyperpolarizabilities and the compositions of these clusters, the frontier orbital compositions and energy gaps between the HOMO and LUMO orbitals were calculated and analysed. In these clusters the HOMO orbitals are mainly composed of halogen atoms and the first static hyperpolarizability increases from F to I atom. The LUMO orbitals of clusters [MoOS(3)Py(5)Cu(3)X] are comprised of Mo, O and S atoms while the LUMO orbitals of clusters [WOS(3)Py(5)Cu(3)X] composed of W atom and pyridine ring. The energy gaps between the HOMO and LUMO orbitals of the clusters [MoOS(3)Py(5)Cu(3)X] are smaller than those of the clusters [WOS(3)Py(5)Cu(3)X]. As a result the first static hyperpolarizability values of the clusters [MoOS(3)Py(5)Cu(3)X] are higher than those of the clusters [WOS(3)Py(5)Cu(3)X].

Abstract
The title compound, [Cu6V2O2S6(C6H8N2)6], is constructed from six CuS3N and two VOS3 distorted tetrahedra, forming an octanuclear V/S/Cu cluster with Ci symmetry. The geometry around the V atoms is slightly distorted tetrahedral, while there are large distortions from ideal tetrahedral geometry for the Cu atoms. Adjacent metal–metal distances range from 2.693 (1) to 2.772 (10) Å, indicating weak metal–metal interactions in the cluster.

Abstract
The title compound, {[Pr(C(2)H(6)OS)(8)](2)[Mo(6)Ag(6)S(24)]}(n), contains polymeric Mo(6)S(24)Ag(6) (2-) anions and [Pr(Me(2)SO)(8)](3+) cations, forming a one-dimensional polymeric Mo/S/Ag cluster. The anion assumes the conformation of a zigzag chain. The trivalent cations are arrayed amongst the anionic chains and are well separated from each other. Each Mo and Ag atom is coordinated by four S atoms in a distorted tetra-hedral geometry. The Pr(3+) atom is coordinated by eight dimethyl sulfoxide ligands, forming a polyhedron-shaped distorted square anti-prism.

Abstract
Reactions of AgI with salts of [WS(4)](2-) or [MoS(4)](2-) and with either imidazolidine-2-thione (Imt) or [1,3]diazepane-2-thione (Diap) give the complexes [WS(4)Ag(2)(Imt)(2)](n) and [MS(4)Ag(2)(Diap)(4)] [M = W or Mo]; in the case of Diap, corresponding Cu complexes can be obtained with CuCl instead of AgI. Decomposition of the Ag-Diap complexes during attempted recrystallization leads to the polymeric complex [AgI(Diap)](n). The monomeric mixed-metal Diap complexes contain edge-sharing WS(4) and AgS(4) tetrahedra, the Diap ligands being terminally bonded to Ag through sulfur. The mixed-metal W-Ag-Imt complex is a chain polymer with two different environments for the WS(4) unit and three different coordination environments for Ag, one of which is an unprecedented AgS(5) square-based pyramid; Imt ligands are terminally coordinated to Ag. [AgI(Diap)](n) has a complex polymeric chain structure with three different distorted tetrahedral environments for Ag, direct Ag-Ag bonding, both bridging and terminal I, and all Diap ligands bridging pairs of Ag atoms. All the crystal structures feature N-H[...]S or N-H[...]I hydrogen bonding. The complexes have also been characterised by infrared, UV-Vis and (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Addition of [Mo(V)2O2S2(edt)2]2- (edt =1,2-ethanedithiolate) to acetonitrile and/or methanol solutions of MnII containing bipyridines [4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (TDP), 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy), 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bpy)] or 15-crown-5 produces three new heterometallic cluster coordination polymers, [Mn2[Mo2O2S2(edt)2]2(TDP)3(CH3OH)2(NCMe)2].3CH3OH.0.25MeCN (1), [Mn(TDP)2(H2O)2]2+[Mn[Mo2O2S2(edt)2)2(TDP)2]]2-.6CH3OH (2), [Mn[Mo2O2S2(edt)2](TDP)2(CH3OH)(H2O)].CH3OH (3), and three new multinuclear clusters, [Mn[Mo2O2S2(edt)2](4,4'-bpy)(CH3OH)4].0.5(4,4'-bpy) (4), [Mn[Mo2O2S2(edt)2](2,2'-bpy)2].2CH3OH (5), and (NEt4)2[Mn(15-crown-5)[Mo2O2S2(edt)2]2] (6). All compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The coordination mode of Mn in these compounds depends on the ligands and the crystallization conditions. Compound 2 readily converts to 1 or 3 depending on the reaction and solvent conditions. Compounds 1 and 2 were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis combined with mass spectroscopy (TG-MS) in the temperature range 25-500 degrees C. The room-temperature magnetic moments for compounds 1-6 were determined.

Abstract
A new 3D polymeric inorganic cluster with Cu in mixed-valence states was synthesized by the solid-state reaction of (NH4)2WS4, S8, CuCl, and Et4NCl; S8 may be regarded as the oxidizing agent converting Cu(I) to Cu(II) and causing the polymerization of [WS4]2-. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are determined, and the results show that the cluster exhibits both large NLO absorptive and strong refractive behaviors.

Abstract
An open capsule-type octanuclear heterometallic sulfide cluster without an intramolecular inversion center [Ru(eta(6)-C(6)Me(6)){P(OMe)(3)}{MoO(mu(3)-S)(3)}(CuI)(2)](2) (5) has been synthesized for the first time by stepwise connection of three mononuclear building blocks, i.e., (i) [RuCl(2)(eta(6)-C(6)Me(6)){P(OMe)(3)}] (1a) as an octahedral terminal building block to control the direction of cluster expansion, (ii) [MoOS(3)](2)(-) as a tetrahedral polydentate building block owing to the strong coordination ability of the S atoms, and (iii) a CuI building block to form a trigonal planar (mu-S)(2)CuI unit or to form a linkage unit of two incomplete cubane-type octanuclear frameworks. The stepwise connection was made in the following order: [RuCl(2)(eta(6)-C(6)Me(6)){P(OMe)(3)}] (1a, mononuclear) --> [Ru(eta(6)-C(6)Me(6)){P(OMe)(3)}{MoOS(mu(2)-S)(2)}] (2a, dinuclear) --> [Ru(eta(6)-C(6)Me(6)){P(OMe)(3)}{MoO(mu(2)-S)(2)(mu(3)-S)}CuI] (3a, butterfly-type trinuclear) --> [Ru(eta(6)-C(6)Me(6)){P(OMe)(3)}{MoO(mu(3)-S)(3)}(CuI)(2)](2) (5). When P(OMe)(3) was replaced by P(OEt)(3), which is more bulky than P(OMe)(3), in the starting ruthenium building block [RuCl(2)(eta(6)-C(6)Me(6)){P(OEt)(3)}] (1b, mononuclear), only the tetranuclear incomplete single cubane cluster [Ru(eta(6)-C(6)Me(6)){P(OEt)(3)}{MoO(mu(3)-S)(3)}(CuI)(2)] (6) was generated, owing to the steric effect of P(OEt)(3).

Abstract
The vibrational spectra of MM'2X8(2-) and trans-MM'2S6O2(2-) (M = Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II); M' = Mo, W; X = O, S) are calculated using ab initio method at RHF/LanL2DZ level. The calculated vibrational frequencies of MM'2S8(2-) and trans-MM'2O2S6(2-) are evaluated via comparison with experimental data. The results obtained by this method have the deviation <5% for M'S and MS stretching vibrational frequencies, however, relatively higher deviation is obtained for M'O stretching vibrational frequencies. Some vibrational frequencies of these complexes that have not been experimentally reported are also predicted and some of the experimental values are assigned.

Abstract
Three new Mo(V) dithiolene compounds have been synthesized by addition of alkynes ((Me(3)Si)(2)C(2) (TMSA), (Me(3)Si)(2)C(4), and (Ph)(2)C(4) to MoO(2)S(2)(2-) in a MeOH/NH(3) mixture: [Mo(2)(O)(2)(mu-S)(2)(eta(2)-S(2))(eta(2)-S(2)C(2)H(2))](2)(-) 1, [Mo(2)(O)(X)(mu-S)(2)(eta(2)-S(2))(eta(2)-S(2)C(2)Ph(C(2)Ph))](2-) 2 (X = O or S), and [Mo(2)(O)(2)(mu-S)(2)(eta(2)-S(2))(eta(2)-S(2)C(2)H(C(2)H))](2-) 3. The structure of 1 as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study (space group Pbca, a = 13.3148(1) A, b = 15.7467(4) A, c = 28.4108(7) A, V = 5956.7(2) A(3)) is discussed. 2 and 3 have been identified by ESMS (electrospray mass spectrometry), (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, and infrared spectroscopies. This investigation completes our previous study devoted to the addition of DPA (C(2)Ph(2)) to MoO(2)S(2)(2-) which led to [Mo(2)(O)(X)(mu-S)(2)(eta(2)-S(2))(eta(2)-S(2)C(2)Ph(2))](2-) 4 (X = O or S). A reaction scheme is proposed to explain the formation of the different species present in solution. The reactivity of the remaining nucleophilic site of these complexes (eta(2)-S(2)) toward dicarbomethoxyacetylene (DMA) is also discussed.
