Abstract
The complexes of general formulas [RuII(terpy)(4-CO2H-4'-Mebpy)(X)]n+ (X = NO (n = 3) and NO2 (n = 1); 1, 2) and [RuII(terpy)(4-COGHK-4'-Mebpy)(X)] (X = NO (n = 3) and NO2 (n = 1); 3, 4) were synthesized and characterized. The complex [RuII(terpy)(4-CO2-4'-Mebpy)(NO2)]_7.5H2O has also been characterized by X-ray crystallographic studies. It crystallizes in the triclinic system: a = 9.4982(1) A, b = 13.1330(1) A, c = 14.2498(2) A; alpha = 110.5870(6) x bc, beta = 98.4048(5) x bc, gamma = 106.4353(5), P1, Z = 2. The crystal structure reveals an extended hydrogen-bonding network. Two water molecules form strong hydrogen bonds with the nitro and the carboxylic oxygen atoms of two separate units of the complex, resulting in a dimeric unit. The dimers are bridged by a (H2O)15 cluster, consisting of two cyclo-(H2O)6 species, while an exo-H2O(8) connects them. Two more exo-H2O molecules are joined together and connect the cyclo-(H2O)6 units with the H2O(1) of the dimeric unit. It was found that complexes 1 and 3 can be transformed into their nitro derivatives in aqueous media at neutral pH. Photorelease of NO in dry MeCN solutions was observed for complexes 1 and 3. Also, complex 2 partially releases (NO2)- in MeCN upon visible light irradiation. Complex 2 interacts with short fragments (70-300 bp) of calf thymus DNA shortening slightly the apparent polynucleotide length, while the conjugation of the peptide GHK to it (2) affects its DNA-binding mode. The peptide moiety of complex 4 was found to interact with the DNA helix in a synergistic way with the whole complex. Preliminary results of photocleavage of DNA by complex 2 are also reported.

Abstract
The complex framework [Ru(tpy)(dpk)]2+ has been used to study the generation and reactivity of the nitrosyl complex [Ru(tpy)(dpk)(NO)]3+ ([4]3+). Stepwise conversion of the chloro complex [Ru(tpy)(dpk)(Cl)]+ ([1]+) via [Ru(tpy)(dpk)(CH3CN)]2+ ([2]2+) and the nitro compound [Ru(tpy)(dpk)(NO2)]+ ([3]+) yielded [4]3+; all four complexes were structurally characterized as perchlorates. Electrochemical oxidation and reduction was investigated as a function of the monodentate ligand as was the IR and UV-vis spectroscopic response (absorption/emission). The kinetics of the conversion [4]3+/[3]+ in aqueous environment were also studied. Two-step reduction of [4]3+ was monitored via EPR, UV-vis, and IR (nu(NO), nu(CO)) spectroelectrochemistry to confirm the {RuNO}7 configuration of [4]2+ and to exhibit a relatively intense band at 505 nm for [4]+, attributed to a ligand-to-ligand transition originating from bound NO-.

Abstract
The hydrogensquarates of glycine-containing tripeptides glycylglycylglycine (H-Gly-Gly-Gly-OH), glycylglycylmethionine (H-Gly-Gly-Met-OH), and methionylglycylglycine (H-Met-Gly-Gly-OH) have been characterized structurally. Quantum chemical ab initio calculations, solid-state linear-dichroic infrared (IR-LD) spectroscopy, 1H and 13C NMR data, ESI-MS, HPLC-MS/MS, TGV, and DSC methods were employed. The structures consist in a positively charged peptide moiety and a negative hydrogensquarate anion (HSq), stabilized by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
The complex cis-(Cl,Cl)-[RuCl2(terpy)(NO)]Cl (1) has been synthesized by the reaction of [RuCl3(H2O)2(NO)] with terpyridine (terpy) and characterized by various spectroscopic, analytical techniques and using electronic structure calculation (DFT) methods. The cytotoxic activity and the DNA-binding properties of have also been studied using biochemical techniques. The results establish unequivocally that corresponds to a so-called [RuNO]6 species, which readily releases the nitrosyl ligand upon irradiation with a mercury lamp in acetonitrile solution. DFT calculations provided a satisfactory description of structural, bonding, electronic and related properties of the new compound and throw light on the mechanism of the photo-induced NO release. Screening on A2780 (human ovarian carcinoma) cell lines showed significant cytotoxicity with an IC50 value of 0.49 microM. 31P and 23Na NMR spectroscopy along with electrophoretic mobility studies illustrated that complex primarily binds by coordination to DNA without any pi-interaction between the planar terpy ligand and the DNA bases, while weak electrostatic interactions could not be excluded. Studies on the inhibition of the restriction enzymes DraI and SmaI revealed that prefers the guanine and cytosine bases of DNA.

Abstract
Trans-[RuCl(NO)(dppe)2]2+ species were prepared. The complexes have been characterized by microanalysis, IR and 31P[1H] NMR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The trans-[RuCl(NO)(dppe)2](ClO4)2 complex shows a reversible one-electron-reduction process at E(1/2) = 0.200 V and another one-electron-reduction irreversible process at -0.620 V, both centered at the NO+ group. The dissociation of the NO group from the trans-[RuCl(NO)(dppe)2]2+ after two one-electron reductions results in the formation of the trans- and cis-[RuCl2(dppe)2] isomers. The product of an electrolyzed solution of the same complex at -0.300 V shows an EPR signal consistent with the presence of the [RuCl(NO(0))(dppe)2]+ complex. Crystal data for trans-[RuCl(NO)(dppe)2]2+*[RuCl4(NO)(H2O)]*1/2[RuCl6]4-*2[H2O] (I) and trans-[RuCl(NO)(dppe)(2)]2+*2[RuCl4(NO)(CH3O)]-*3[CH3OH] (II) are as follow: (I) Space group P-1, a=10.4040(3) A, b=12.3470(4) A, c=23.5620(8) A, alpha=95.885(2) degrees, beta=99.608(2) degrees, gamma=104.378(2) degrees, R=0.0521; (II) space group P-1, a=10.9769(2) A, b=13.2753(3) A, c=24.0287(4) A, alpha=99.743(1) degrees, beta=95.847(1) degrees, gamma=97.549(1) degrees; R=0.0496. The fac-[RuCl3(NO)(dppe)] (III) complex has been also prepared; its crystal data are: space group P2(1)/n (No. 14), a=11.841(2) A, b=13.775(2) A, c=16.295(4) A, beta=92.81(2) degrees; R1=0.0395.

Abstract
The reactivity of ruthenium(II)- and ruthenium(III)-chloride-dimethyl sulfoxide precursors and of the antimetastatic drug [ImH][trans-RuCl(4)(dmso-S)(Im)] (NAMI-A, Im = imidazole, dmso = dimethyl sulfoxide) toward NO was investigated. Treatment of [(dmso)(2)H][trans-RuCl(4)(dmso-S)(2)] and mer-RuCl(3)(dmso)(3) with gaseous NO yielded [(dmso)(2)H][trans-RuCl(4)(dmso-O)(NO)] (1) and mer,cis-RuCl(3)(dmso-O)(2)(NO) (2), respectively. Thus, coordination of the strong pi-acceptor NO induces a S to O linkage isomerization of the dmso trans to it to avoid competition for pi-electrons. In light-protected nitromethane solutions, complex 2 equilibrates slowly with the two isomers mer-RuCl(3)(dmso-S)(dmso-O)(NO) (3), with NO trans to Cl, and mer-RuCl(3)(dmso-S)(dmso-O)(NO) (4), with NO trans to dmso-O; the equilibrium mixture consists of ca. 64% 2, 3% 3, and 33% 4. Treatment of the Ru(II) precursor trans-RuCl(2)(dmso-S)(4) with gaseous NO in CH(2)Cl(2) solution yielded the nitrosyl-nitro derivative trans,cis,cis-RuCl(2)(dmso-O)(2)(NO)(NO(2)) (5). Finally, [(Im)(2)H][trans-RuCl(4)(Im)(NO)] (6) was prepared by treatment of [ImH][trans-RuCl(4)(dmso-O)(NO)] (1Im) with an excess of imidazole in refluxing acetone. The spectroscopic features are consistent with the [Ru(NO)](6) formulation for all complexes, that is, a diamagnetic Ru(II) nucleus bound to NO(+). Compounds 1, 2, 5, and 6 were characterized also by X-ray crystallography; they all show a linear nitrosyl group, with short Ru-NO bond distances consistent with a strong d(pi) --> pi NO back-bonding. An unusual inertness of O-bonded dmso was observed in compound 1. Complexes 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 are all redox active in DMF solutions showing irreversible reductions whose peak potentials depend on the other ligands attached to the Ru metal center. The site of reduction is the NO(+) moiety. The reduced complexes are not stable and release a Cl(-) or NO(2)(-) ligand followed by the NO(*) radical. The chemical reactions following electron transfer are all fast (rate constant >100 s(-1) at 293 K). The Ru product species are not redox active within the DMF window.
