Abstract
The redox properties of metallic nanoparticles are discussed, in particular the relationships between excess charge, size and the Fermi level of the electrons. The redox potentials are derived using simple electrostatic models to provide a straightforward understanding of the basic phenomena. The different techniques used to measure the variation of Fermi level are presented. Finally, redox aspects of processes such as toxicity, electrochromicity and surface plasmon spectroscopy are discussed.

Abstract
The dual concept of surface energy formally allows application of Gibbs thermodynamics to the surface tension of solids and is unlimited using the classical Lippmann equation for solids that is shown to contradict all available in situ experimental data. At present, the generalized Lippmann equation is believed to be the most universal, since the classical Lippmann equation, the Shuttleworth and Gokhshtein equations could be derived from it. Lately it was evaluated in two opposite ways: the first--the experimental verification of the Gokhshtein equation supports correctness of the generalized Lippmann and Shuttleworth equations; the second--the incompatibility of the Shuttleworth equation with Hermann's mathematical structure of thermodynamics makes invalid all its corollaries, including the generalized Lippmann and Gokhshtein equations. Both approaches are shown here to be incorrect, since the Gokhshtein equation cannot be correctly derived from any of the above-mentioned equations. The Frumkin derivation of the first and second Gokhshtein equations follows from one thermodynamic relationship general for the surface tension of both solid and liquid electrodes. The classical Lippmann equation is also derived from this general relationship as a particular case of the second Gokhshtein equations. We have considered the hierarchy of these equations and discussed the straightforward application of the classical Lippmann equation for solids with an account for elasticity of the surface structured layers of liquids. The partial charge transfer during anion adsorption cannot be measured in electrochemical experiments or reliably estimated by quantum-chemical and DFT calculations. However, it is directly involved in the adsorbate charge that is experimentally accessible by in situ contact electric resistance technique. We present the first quantitative evaluation of charge transfer during halides adsorption on silver from aqueous solutions in dependence on the electrode potential.

Abstract
The scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) combined with a computerized tensile stage was employed to measure the kinetics of electron transfer (ET) reactions at stainless steel electrodes as a function of the applied mechanical stress. Reproducible current versus distance curves were obtained for different values of the tensile stress applied to a stainless steel (T-316) sample by using hexaammineruthenium as a redox mediator. The dependences of the extracted rate constant on substrate potential (i.e., Tafel plots, ln k versus E) were linear, in agreement with classical electrochemical theory. Possible origins of the stress effect on the ET rate and its implications for studies of stress corrosion cracking are discussed.

Abstract
We report a cantilever bending investigation into the variation of surface stress, f, with surface charge density, q, for (111)-textured thin films of gold in aqueous NaF and HClO 4. The graphs of f(q) are highly linear, and the surface stress-charge coefficients, d f/d q, are -1.95 V for 7 mM NaF and -2.0 V for 10 mM HClO 4 near the potential of zero charge. These values exceed some previously published experimental data by a factor of 2, but they agree with recent ab initio calculations of the surface stress-charge response of gold in vacuum.

Abstract
The surface stress response of micromechanical cantilever-based sensors was studied as a function of the morphology, adhesion, and cleanliness of the gold sensing surface. Two model systems were investigated: the adsorption of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers at the gas-solid interface and the potential-controlled adsorption of anions at the liquid-solid interface. The potential-induced surface stress, on a smooth and continuous polycrystalline Au(111)-textured microcantilever in 0.1 M HClO4, is in excellent agreement with macroscopic Au(111) single-crystal electrode results. It is shown that ambient contaminants on the sensing surface dramatically alter the surface stress-potential response. This observation can be misinterpreted as evidence that for polycrystalline Au(111) microcantilever electrodes, surface stress is dominated by surface energy change. Results for anions adsorption on gold are in contrast to the gas-phase model system. We demonstrate that the average grain size of the gold sensing surface strongly influences the magnitude of the surface stress change induced by the adsorption of octanethiol. A 25-fold amplification of the change in surface stress is observed on increasing the average gold grain size of the sensing surface from 90 to 500 nm.

Abstract
We measure the surface stress induced by electrochemical transformations of a thin conducting polymer film. One side of a micromechanical cantilever-based sensor is covered with an electropolymerized dodecyl benzenesulfonate-doped polypyrrole (PPyDBS) film. The microcantilever serves as both the working electrode (in a conventional three-electrode cell configuration) and as the mechanical transducer for simultaneous, in situ, and real-time measurements of the current and interfacial stress changes. A compressive change in surface stress of about -2 N/m is observed when the conducting polymer is electrochemically switched between its oxidized (PPy+) and neutral (PPy0) state by cyclic voltammetry. The surface stress sensor's response during the anomalous first reductive scan is examined. The effect of long-term cycling on the mechanical transformation ability of PPy(DBS) films in both surfactant and halide-based electrolytes is also discussed. We have identified two main competing origins of surface stress acting on the PPy(DBS)/ gold-coated microcantilever: one purely mechanical due to the volume change of the conducting polymer, and a second charge-induced, owing to the interaction of anions of the supporting electrolyte with the gold surface.

Abstract
We analyze the simultaneous mechanical and chemical equilibrium at the interface between a fluid electrolyte and a solid conductor in terms of a continuum theory, with attention to surfaces of varying orientation and of arbitrary curvature. On top of the variable which is conjugate to the surface stress, the tangential strain, we introduce an additional degree of freedom for the surface deformation, the surface stretch, to account for the observation of a reversible normal relaxation of the top atomic layer as a function of the electrochemical potential. We derive relations between the materials constants of the surface, for instance, the pressure dependence of the electric potential at constant superficial charge density, and discuss experiments-using cantilevers or porous solids-by which they can be measured.

Abstract
Over the past three decades, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has gone through a tortuous pathway to develop into a powerful surface diagnostic technique for in situ investigation of surface adsorption and reactions on electrodes. This review presents the recent progress achieved mainly in our laboratory on the improvement of detection sensitivities as well as spectral, temporal, and spatial resolutions. Various surface roughening procedures for electrodes of different metals coupled with maximum use of a high-sensitivity confocal Raman microscope enable us to obtain good-quality SER spectra on the electrode surfaces made from net Pt, Ni, Co, Fe, Pd, Rh, Ru, and their alloys that were traditionally considered to be non-SERS active. A novel technique called potential-averaged SERS (PASERS) has been developed for the quantitative study of electrochemical sorption. Applications are exemplified on extensively studied areas such as coadsorption, electrocatalysis, corrosion, and fuel cells, and several advantages of in situ electrochemical SERS are demonstrated. Finally, further developments in this field are briefly discussed with emphasis on the emerging methodology.
