Chemical and physical defenses of Singapore gorgonians (Octocorallia: Gorgonacea)

Warm temperature alters the chemical cue preference of Acropora tenuis and Heliopora coerulea larvae

Larvae released into the water column rely on chemical cues from the benthos for successful settlement. However, larval preference for substrates may be affected by rising seawater temperature brought about by global climate change. In this study, we examined the effect of elevated temperature on chemical cue preference by larvae of the scleractinian coral, Acropora tenuis, and the octocoral, Heliopora coerulea, collected from northwestern Philippines. At ambient temperature (28 °C), both H. coerulea and A. tenuis larvae showed preference for substrates containing either crustose coralline algae or crude ethanolic extracts from conspecific or congeneric corals. In contrast, at higher temperature (30 °C), greater preference was shown for substrates containing the crude extract from conspecific or congeneric corals. These results demonstrate that elevated temperature can change larval substrate preference, which will have downstream impacts on crucial biological processes, such as larval settlement and recruitment.

Comparison of chemical compounds associated with sclerites from healthy and diseased sea fan corals (Gorgonia ventalina)

BACKGROUND

The roles of gorgonian sclerites as structural components and predator deterrents have been widely studied. Yet their role as barriers against microbes has only recently been investigated, and even less is known about the diversity and roles of the chemical compounds associated with sclerites.

METHODS

Here, we examine the semi-volatile organic compound fraction (SVOCs) associated with sclerites from healthy and diseased Gorgonia ventalina sea fan corals to understand their possible role as a stress response or in defense of infection. We also measured the oxidative potential of compounds from diseased and healthy G. ventalina colonies.

RESULTS

The results showed that sclerites harbor a great diversity of SVOCs. Overall, 70 compounds were identified, the majority of which are novel with unknown biological roles. The majority of SVOCs identified exhibit multiple immune-related roles including antimicrobial and radical scavenging functions. The free radical activity assays further confirmed the anti-oxidative potential of some these compounds. The anti-oxidative activity was, nonetheless, similar across sclerites regardless of the health condition of the colony, although sclerites from diseased sea fans display slightly higher anti-oxidative activity than the healthy ones.

DISCUSSION

Sclerites harbor great SVOCs diversity, the majority of which are novel to sea fans or any other corals. Yet the scientific literature consulted showed that the roles of compounds found in sclerites vary from antioxidant to antimicrobial compounds. However, this study fell short in determine the origin of the SVOCs identified, undermining our capacity to determine the biological roles of the SVOCs on sclerites and sea fans.

Biotechnology of marine fungi

Filamentous fungi are the most widely used eukaryotes in industrial and pharmaceutical applications. Their biotechnological uses include the production of enzymes, vitamins, polysaccharides, pigments, lipids and others. Marine fungi are a still relatively unexplored group in biotechnology. Taxonomic and habitat diversity form the basis for exploration of marine fungal biotechnology. This review covers what is known of the potential applications of obligate and marine-derived fungi obtained from coastal to the oceanic and shallow water to the deep-sea habitats. Recent studies indicate that marine fungi are potential candidates for novel enzymes, bioremediation, biosurfactants, polysaccharides, polyunsaturated fatty acids and secondary metabolites. Future studies that focus on culturing rare and novel marine fungi, combined with knowledge of their physiology and biochemistry will provide a firm basis for marine mycotechnology.

New hemiketal steroid from the introduced soft coral Chromonephthea braziliensis is a chemical defense against predatory fishes

Recent studies show that chemical defenses in the exotic soft coral Chromonephthea braziliensis Ofwegen (Nephtheidae, Alcyonacea) can be one of the reasons for the success of this introduced species. We report for the first time the detailed composition of the monohydroxylated sterol fraction and a new hemiketal steroid, 23-keto-cladiellin-A, isolated from the unpalatable hexane extract from C. braziliensis. Bioassay-guided fractionation of this extract revealed that this hemiketal steroid exhibits potent feeding deterrent properties against a natural assemblage of fishes at the natural concentration. The major sterol fraction, containing the monohydroxylated sterols, was inactive in the bioassay. The results suggest that this active molecule may be driving the observed success of the invasion of this soft coral along the Brazilian Atlantic coast.

Antipredator defense and phenotypic plasticity of sclerites from Renilla muelleri, a tropical sea pansy

Calcified sclerites are common in many benthic marine invertebrates, and despite their widespread occurrence, little is known about their ecological roles. Previous studies suggested that the sclerite composition of coral colonies may be altered in response to environmental cues such as predation and water motion. Furthermore, larger sclerites are thought to be more effective than small ones in deterring predators, while small sclerites may provide greater stiffness and resistance to deformation. The present study compared the length of the sclerites of the sea pansy Renilla muelleri from three depths in Guanabara Bay in southeastern Brazil. Our results show that sclerites are larger in deep-water specimens than in those from shallow water. Field assays were conducted in which sclerites from sea pansies at three depths were incorporated into artificial foods and offered to a natural assemblage of fish. These assays demonstrate that sclerites from R. muelleri from all three depths significantly reduced consumption by generalist carnivorous fishes. We conclude that R. muelleri uses skeletal elements not only to give the body its form but also as a defense against biotic threats.
