Abstract
A short route from dihydrocarvone is described, which led to the tetracarbocyclic core common to artatrovirenol A and B and daphnenoid A. A variant of this route afforded guaia-4,6-dien-3-one (from Enterospermum madagascarensis) and its epimer. From 2-(2-oxoethyl)furan, a 15-step sequence then delivered the complete carbon skeleton and all functionality necessary for daphnenoid A. Key steps in the route include diastereoselective intramolecular oxidopyrylium cycloaddition, oxa-bridge cleavage under "push-pull" conditions, and intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloaddition.

Abstract
Three new guaiane type sesquiterpenes were isolated from the methanolic extract of the fruits of Torilis japonica together with a known compound, torilin (1). Their structures were established as 11-acetoxy-8-isobutyryl-4-guaien-3-one (2), 11-acetoxy-8-methacrylyl-4-guaien-3-one (3), and 11-acetoxy-8-propionyl-4-guaien-3-one (4) by spectroscopic methods. These compounds inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide production in murine macrophages RAW 264.7 cells.

Abstract
Investigation of antiinflammatory constituents of the stem and root barks of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica resulted in the isolation of three guaiane type sesquiterpenes, torilin, 1-hydroxytorilin, together with a new derivative, (1beta, 7beta, 8beta, 10beta)-1,8,11-trihydroxy-4-guaien-8-angeloyl-3-one named 1-hydroxytorilin A. All the three sesquiterpenes inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production in murine microglial BV2 cells.

Abstract
Three new cadinane- and guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids, 2-hydroxy-10-epi-zonarene 1, 2, 15-dihydroxycalamenene 2 and guaia-4, 6-dien-3-one 3, were isolated from the wood of Enterospermum madagascariensis (Rubiaceae) grown in Madagascar. Their structures were established from concerted application of 2D NMR techniques including gs-COSY, gs-HMQC, gs-HMBC and NOESY.

Abstract
From the methanolic extract of Torilis japonica D. C. fruit (Umbelliferae), two eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids were isolated together with five previously described sesquiterpenoids. From the results of spectral analyses, they were characterized as 4(15)-eudesmene-1beta,5alpha-diol and 4alpha,15-epoxyeudesmane-1beta,6alpha-diol, respectively. The absolute stereostructures of these sesquiterpenoids were elucidated by the modified Mosher's method.

Abstract
A new guaiane type sesquiterpene was isolated from the fruit of Torilis japonica (Umbelliferae). Based on NMR, IR and mass spectroscopy its structure was confirmed as deangeloyloxy torilin, 1beta, 7alpha, 10alphaH-11-acetoxy-guaia-4-en-3-one (1). This is the first report showing that this compound can be isolated from Torilis japonica.
