High resolution light diffraction tomography: nearfield measurements of 10 MHz continuous wave ultrasound

A reliability study of light refractive tomography utilized for noninvasive measurement of ultrasound pressure fields

Light refractive tomography is an optical measurement technique that is able to provide absolute sound pressure values in specified volumes. Because of the simplicity of the measurement principle as well as the compactness of the measurement setup, light refractive tomography offers higher measurement performance and fewer error sources than light diffraction tomography. In this contribution, a numerically simulated ultrasound pressure field is exploited to determine the experimental parameters and to analyze the error sources as well as their influences on final results. After that, several ultrasound transducers excited with 1 MHz signals are investigated. The light refractive tomography results show good agreement with hydrophone measurements. Finally, we reconstruct 2000 transient states of the ultrasound pressure field within a volume of about 38 cm(3) after sending the burst signal. Without applying any smoothing to the resulting images, the reconstructed pressure field varies continuously in both spatial and temporal dimensions.

Simulation of absolute amplitudes of ultrasound signals using equivalent circuits

Equivalent circuits for piezoelectric devices and ultrasonic transmission media can be used to cosimulate electronics and ultrasound parts in simulators originally intended for electronics. To achieve efficient system-level optimization, it is important to simulate correct, absolute amplitude of the ultrasound signal in the system, as this determines the requirements on the electronics regarding dynamic range, circuit noise, and power consumption. This paper presents methods to achieve correct, absolute amplitude of an ultrasound signal in a simulation of a pulse-echo system using equivalent circuits. This is achieved by taking into consideration loss due to diffraction and the effect of the cable that connects the electronics and the piezoelectric transducer. The conductive loss in the transmission line that models the propagation media of the ultrasound pulse is used to model the loss due to diffraction. Results show that the simulated amplitude of the echo follows measured values well in both near and far fields, with an offset of about 10%. The use of a coaxial cable introduces inductance and capacitance that affect the amplitude of a received echo. Amplitude variations of 60% were observed when the cable length was varied between 0.07 m and 2.3 m, with simulations predicting similar variations. The high precision in the achieved results show that electronic design and system optimization can rely on system simulations alone. This will simplify the development of integrated electronics aimed at ultrasound systems.

Characterization of micromachined ultrasonic transducers using light diffraction tomography

This paper demonstrates that light diffraction tomography can be used to measure the acoustic field of micromachined ultrasonic transducers (MUT) in cases in which standard methods like hydrophone and microphone measurements fail. Two types of MUTs have been characterized with the method, one air-coupled capacitive MUT (cMUT) and one waterloaded continuous wave (CW) miniature multilayer lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducer. Light diffraction tomography is an ultrasound measurement method with some special characteristics. Based on the interaction of light and ultrasound, it combines light intensity measurements with tomography algorithms to produce a measurement system. The method offers nonperturbing pressure measurements with high spatial resolution. It has been shown that, under certain circumstances, light diffraction tomography can be used as an absolute pressure measurement method with accuracy in the order of 10% in water and 13% in air. The results show that air-coupled cMUTs in the frequency range of about 1 MHz as well as the extreme near field of a miniaturized CW 10 MHz water-loaded transducer were successfully characterized with light diffraction tomography.

Trapping of microparticles in the near field of an ultrasonic transducer

We are investigating means of handling microparticles in microfluidic systems, in particular localized acoustic trapping of microparticles in a flow-through device. Standing ultrasonic waves were generated across a microfluidic channel by ultrasonic microtransducers integrated in one of the channel walls. Particles in a fluid passing a transducer were drawn to pressure minima in the acoustic field, thereby being trapped and confined at the lateral position of the transducer. The spatial distribution of trapped particles was evaluated and compared with calculated acoustic intensity distributions. The particle trapping was found to be strongly affected by near field pressure variations due to diffraction effects associated with the finite sized transducer element. Since laterally confining radiation forces are proportional to gradients in the acoustic energy density, these near field pressure variations may be used to get strong trapping forces, thus increasing the lateral trapping efficiency of the device. In the experiments, particles were successfully trapped in linear fluid flow rates up to 1mm/s. It is anticipated that acoustic trapping using integrated transducers can be exploited in miniaturised total chemical analysis systems (microTAS), where e.g. microbeads with immobilised antibodies can be trapped in arrays and subjected to minute amounts of sample followed by a reaction, detected using fluorescence.

Modelling of nonlinear effects and the response of ultrasound contrast micro bubbles: simulation and experiment

The propagation of diagnostic ultrasonic imaging pulses in tissue and their interaction with contrast micro bubbles is a very complex physical process, which we assumed to be separable into three stages: pulse propagation in tissue, the interaction of the pulse with the contrast bubble, and the propagation of the scattered echo. The model driven approach is used to gain better knowledge of the complex processes involved. A simplified way of field simulation is chosen due to the complexity of the task and the necessity to estimate comparative contributions of each component of the process. Simulations are targeted at myocardial perfusion estimation. A modified method for spatial superposition of attenuated waves enables simulations of low intensity pulse pressure fields from weakly focused transducers in a nonlinear, attenuating, and liquid-like biological medium. These assumptions enable the use of quasi-linear calculations of the acoustic field. The simulations of acoustic bubble response are carried out with the Rayleigh-Plesset equation with the addition of radiation damping. Theoretical simulations with synthesised and experimentally sampled pulses show that the interaction of the excitation pulses with the contrast bubbles is the main cause of nonlinear scattering, and a 2-3 dB increase of second harmonic amplitude depends on nonlinear distortions of the incident pulse.

Frequency dependence of speckle in continuous-wave ultrasound with implications for blood perfusion measurements

Speckle in continuous wave (CW) Doppler has previously been found to cause large variations in detected Doppler power in blood perfusion measurements, where a large number of blood vessels are present in the sample volume. This artifact can be suppressed by using a number of simultaneously transmitted frequencies and averaging the detected signals. To optimize the strategy, statistical properties of speckle in CW ultrasound need to be known. This paper presents analysis of the frequency separation necessary to obtain independent values of the received power for CW ultrasound using a simplified mathematical model for insonation of a static, lossless, statistically homogeneous, weakly scattering medium. Specifically, the autocovariance function for received power is derived, which functionally is the square of the (deterministic) autocorrelation function of the effective sample volumes produced by the transducer pair for varying frequencies, at least if a delta correlated medium is assumed. A marginal broadening of the modeled autocovariance functions is expected for insonation of blood. The theory is applicable to any transducer aperture, but has been experimentally verified here with 5-MHz, 6.35-mm circular transducers using an agar phantom containing small, randomly dispersed glass particles. A similar experimental verification of a transducer used in multiple-frequency blood perfusion measurements shows that the model proposed in this paper is plausible for explaining the decorrelation between different channels in such a measurement.

Ultrasonic Lamb wave diffraction tomography

Ultrasonic guided waves, Lamb waves, allow large sections of aircraft structures to be rapidly inspected. Unlike conventional ultrasonic C-scan imaging that requires access to the whole inspected area, tomographic algorithms work with data collected over the perimeter. Because the velocity of Lamb waves depends on thickness the travel times of the fundamental modes can be converted into a thickness map of inspected region. Lamb waves cannot penetrate through holes and other strongly scattering defects and the assumption of straight wave paths, essential for many tomographic algorithms, fails. Diffraction tomography is a way to incorporate scattering effects into tomographic algorithms in order to improve image quality and resolution. This work describes the iterative reconstruction procedure developed for Lamb wave tomography and allowing for ray bending correction for imaging of moderately scattering objects.

Characterization of air-coupled ultrasound transducers in the frequency range 40 kHz-2 mHz using light diffraction tomography

The aim of this work was to show the applicability of light diffraction tomography on airborne ultrasound in the frequency range 40 kHz-2 MHz. Seven different air-coupled transducers were measured to show the method's performance regarding linearity, absolute pressure measurements, phase measurements, frequency response, S/N ratio and spatial resolution. A calibrated microphone and the pulse-echo method were used to evaluate the results. The absolute measurements agreed within the calibrated microphone's uncertainty range. Pulse waveforms and corresponding FFT diagrams show the method's higher bandwidth compared with the microphone. Further, the method offers non-perturbing measurements with high spatial resolution, which was especially advantageous for measurements close to the transducer surfaces. The S/N ratio was higher than or in the same range as that of the two comparison methods.
