The oblique effect with colour defined motion throughout the visual field

Lateral glances toward moving stimuli among young children with autism: Early regulation of locally oriented perception?

Autistic adults display enhanced and locally oriented low-level perception of static visual information, but diminished perception of some types of movement. The identification of potential precursors, such as atypical perceptual processing, among very young children would be an initial step toward understanding the development of these phenomena. The purpose of this study was to provide an initial measure and interpretation of atypical visual exploratory behaviors toward inanimate objects (AVEBIOs) among young children with autism. A coding system for AVEBIOs was constructed from a corpus of 40 semistandardized assessments of autistic children. The most frequent atypical visual behavior among 15 children aged 33-73 months was lateral glance that was mostly oriented toward moving stimuli and was detected reliably by the experimenters (intraclass correlation > .90). This behavior was more common among autistic than typically developing children of similar verbal mental age and chronological age. As lateral vision is associated with the filtering of high spatial frequency (detail perception) information and the facilitation of high temporal frequencies (movement perception), its high prevalence among very young autistic children may reflect early attempts to regulate and/or optimize both excessive amounts of local information and diminished perception of movement. These findings are initial evidence for the need to consider the neural bases and development of atypical behaviors and their implications for intervention strategies.

Estimating chromatic contrast thresholds from the transient visual evoked potential

Chromatic contrast thresholds may be estimated from transient VEPs by measuring the peak-to-peak amplitude at a range of stimulus levels followed by extrapolation to zero amplitude. However, there have been reports of failure of this technique when applied to the transient chromatic VEP due to variability of amplitude, difficulties with component identification and poor correlation of amplitude with stimulus level. The aim of our study was to compare methods of transient VEP chromatic contrast threshold estimation in terms of success rate and comparison with psychophysical threshold. We found each of the methods we investigated to have a high success rate, and in most cases VEP and psychophysical thresholds did not differ significantly.

The fluttering-heart illusion: a new hypothesis

The fluttering-heart illusion is a perceived lagging behind of a colour target on a background of a different colour when the two are oscillated together. It has been proposed that the illusion is caused by a differential in the perceptual latencies of different colours (Helmholtz 1867/1962), a differential in rod-cone latencies (von Kries 1896) and rod-cone interactions (von Grünau 1975, 1976 Vision Research 15 431-436, 437-440; 16 397-401; see list of references there). The purpose of this experiment was to assess the hypothesis that the fluttering-heart illusion is caused by a differential in the perceived velocities of chromatic and achromatic motion. To evaluate this hypothesis, we tested observers possessing normal colour vision and deuteranopes. The perceived delay of a chromatic target relative to an achromatic target was measured as a function of background cone contrast and target colour. For observers with normal colour vision, the perceived delay of the chromatic target is greater in the L-S than the L-M testing conditions. The reverse is observed in deuteranope observers. We suggest that this is caused by the absence of an L-M opponent mechanism contributing to chromatic motion in deuteranopes. Greater background cone contrasts tended to yield smaller perceived delays in both normal and deuteranope observers, indicating that greater chromatic modulation decreases the perceived delay of the colour target. These results support the hypothesis that the fluttering-heart illusion can be explained by a differential in the perceived velocities of chromatic and achromatic motion.

Short-latency disparity-vergence eye movements in humans: sensitivity to simulated orthogonal tropias

Small disparity stimuli applied to large random-dot patterns elicit machine-like vergence eye movements at short latency. We have examined the sensitivity of these eye movements to simulated orthogonal tropias in three normal subjects by recording (1) the effects of vertical disparities on the initial horizontal vergence responses elicited by 2 degrees crossed and uncrossed (horizontal) disparity stimuli, and (2) the effects of horizontal disparities on the initial vertical vergence responses elicited by 1.2 degrees left-hyper and 0.8 degrees right-hyper (vertical) disparity stimuli. Initial vergence responses were strongest when the orthogonal disparity was close to zero, and decreased to zero as the orthogonal disparity increased to 3 degrees -5 degrees, i.e., there was only a limited tolerance for orthogonal disparity. Tuning curves describing the dependence of the initial change in the vergence angle on the orthogonal disparity were well fit by a Gaussian function. An additional subject, who had an esotropia of approximately 10 degrees in our experimental setup, showed almost no horizontal vergence responses but did show vertical vergence responses to vertical disparity stimuli at short latency (albeit slightly longer than normal) despite the fact that her esotropia resulted in uncrossed disparities that would have totally disabled the vertical vergence mechanism of a normal subject, cf., anomalous retinal correspondence.

The perceived speed of drifting chromatic gratings is mechanism-dependent

The perceived speed of chromatic motion was investigated for gratings that stimulate each chromatic mechanism [L-M and S-(L+M)] in isolation and for gratings that stimulate both chromatic systems. The observers' task consisted of adjusting the speed of a drifting achromatic grating to match the perceived speed of an isoluminant chromatic grating, drifting at 8 deg/s (temporal frequency of 4 Hz). Every observer reported a substantial decrease in perceived speed for chromatic gratings modulated along the S-(L+M) (blue-yellow) cardinal axis compared to other directions in color space. One observer even reported motion standstill for gratings modulated along this axis. Further testing demonstrates that the perceived speed of an isoluminant chromatic grating depends solely on the extent to which it stimulates the L-M (red-green) mechanism. Thus, under the conditions that were tested, the S-(L+M) postreceptoral mechanism does not appear to contribute significantly to determining the perceived speed of chromatic motion.

Perceived length in the central visual field: evidence for visual field asymmetries

Visual performance for judging the length of a simultaneously presented pair of radial lines, reciprocally opposed by 180 degrees at a central fixation point, was assessed for 24 radial positions of test lines, for three viewing conditions (binocular, left and right monocular) and five different standard line sizes (1.43-7.13 degrees ). Generally, the results showed underestimation of the test line. Furthermore, clear visual field asymmetries were observed between the upper versus lower visual fields and the left versus right visual fields with greater underestimation for test lines presented in the lower and right visual fields. Also, asymmetries tended to be strongest along the 30 and 150 degrees radial orientations. Fourier analysis indicated that these asymmetries are mainly described by summing up the f0, f1, f2 and f5 components.

An oblique effect of chromatic gratings measured by color-mixture thresholds

Contrast sensitivity is lower for obliquely oriented achromatic gratings than for vertical or horizontal gratings at high spatial and low temporal frequencies. Although this response is suggestive of mediation by P-pathway cortical correlates, no clear sensory (i.e. class 1) oblique effect has been demonstrated with isoluminant chromatic stimuli. In the present experiment, a two-alternative forced-choice detection task was used to measure observers' sensitivity to spatiotemporal sinusoids varying in orientation and color contrast. A maximum-likelihood method fit ellipses to the thresholds, with the length of each ellipse taken as a measure of chromatic contrast sensitivity at isoluminance, and the width as luminance contrast threshold. A chromatic oblique effect was observed at about 3 cycles deg-1 suggesting an orientation bias within the cortical stream conveying P-cell activity.
