Reactivity of polychlorinated biphenyls in nucleophilic and electrophilic substitutions

To explain the chemical reactivity of polychlorinated biphenyls in nucleophilic (S(N)) and electrophilic (S(E)) substitutions, quantum chemical calculations were carried out at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of the Density Functional Theory in gas phase. Carbon atomic charges in biphenyl structure were calculated by the Atoms-in-Molecules method. Chemical hardness and global electrophilicity index parameters were determined for congeners. A comparison of calculated descriptors and experimental data for congener reactivity in the S(N) and S(E) reactions was made. It is shown that interactions in the S(N) mechanism are reactions of the hard acid-hard base type, these are the most effective in case of highly chlorinated substrates. To explain the congener reactivity in the SE reactions, correct descriptors were not established. The obtained results can be used to carry out chemical transformations of the polychlorinated biphenyls in order to prepare them for microbiological destruction or preservation.

Reductive dechlorination for remediation of polychlorinated biphenyls

Technologies such as thermal, oxidative, reductive, and microbial methods for the remediation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have previously been reviewed. Based on energy consumption, formation of PCDD/F, and remediation efficiency, reductive methods have emerged as being advantageous for remediation of PCBs. However, many new developments in this field have not been systematically reviewed. Therefore, reductive technologies published in the last decade related to remediation of PCBs will be reviewed here. Three categories, including catalytic hydrodechlorination with H(2), Fe-based reductive dechlorination, and other reductive dechlorination methods (e.g., hydrogen-transfer dechlorination, base-catalyzed dechlorination, and sodium dispersion) are specifically reviewed. In addition, the advantages of each remediation technology are discussed. In this review, 108 articles are referenced.

Highly effective degradation of polychlorinated biphenyls in soil mediated by a Ca/Rh bicatalytic system

Treatment of PCBs in soil using metallic calcium and alcohol ultimately reduced 1300 x 10(-3)mgkg(-1) PCB concentration to 1.8 x 10(-3)mg kg(-1). Moreover, using the metallic calcium catalyst method to promote the effective use of hydrogen gas in the presence of a specific reducing catalyst such as Rh/C, the decomposition efficiency of PCBs was notably increased despite mild reaction conditions. The total PCB concentration of treated soils decreased from 1300 x 10(-3)mg kg(-1) to 0.62 x 10(-3)mg kg(-1) (decomp. avg.=99.95%). Treatment of soils with metallic calcium and a Rh/C catalyst in alcohol under mild conditions such as 0.15-0.26 MPa at room temperature is extremely effective for degradation of existing PCBs.
