The sedimentation capabilities of hexadecyltrimethylammonium-modified montmorillonites

Enhanced treatment of dispersed dye-production wastewater by self-assembled organobentonite in a one-step process with poly-aluminium chloride

Organobentonite has been successfully applied in industrial wastewater treatment. However, the solid-liquid separation in wastewater treatment still needs improvement. This study presents an enhanced approach with high removal efficiency and short separation time for dispersed dye-production wastewater using self-assembled organobentonite in a one-step process with poly-aluminium chloride (PAC). The enhanced effects of PAC on wastewater treatment by organobentonite were comprehensively evaluated. Following the primary decontamination by the self-assembled organobentonite, the removal efficiency for dispersed dye-production wastewater was strengthened with PAC coagulation. The removal rates of TOC and organic pollutants were 55.0% and 63.5%, respectively, with the PAC-enhanced approach and were 1.3- and 1.6-fold higher, respectively, than those with the self-assembled organobentonite approach. The combination of PAC with self-assembled organobentonite was able to break the stability of the organobentonite suspension and enlarge the floc size, and thus reduce the solid-liquid separation time from 30 min to 10 min. Additionally, this enhanced approach could improve the biodegradability of wastewater with the BOD₅/COD_Cr ratio increasing from 0.22 to 0.39, which was 4.1-fold higher than that of only organobentonite in a one-step process. Therefore, the PAC-enhanced approach could be a promising technology for wastewater pretreatment in practical industrial applications.

Stress responses of duckweed (Lemna minor L.) and water velvet (Azolla filiculoides Lam.) to anionic surfactant sodium-dodecyl-sulphate (SDS)

Surfactants are used for several purposes and recently they have attracted the attention for their ability to modify the behavior of other preexistent or co-disposed contaminants, although their use or discharge in wastewaters can represent a real or potential risk for the environment. Lemna minor L. and Azolla filiculoides Lam. are floating aquatic macrophytes, very effective in accumulating several pollutants including sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). In this work we evaluated the effects of SDS on these species by determining the stress ethylene production via laser-based trace gas detection, and the activities of enzymes involved in stress response, such as guaiacol peroxidase (G-POD), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and polyphenol-oxidase (PPO). Phenolics content was also determined. The macrophytes were treated with different concentrations of SDS for one week. SDS affected duckweed enzymatic activities and phenol content. While in the fern phenolics amount, PAL, G-POD and PPO activities were not affected by SDS except for 100 ppm SDS, the only concentration that was taken up and not completely degraded. Stress ethylene production was induced only in the fern treated with 50 and 100 ppm SDS.

Removal of o-nitrobenzoic acid by adsorption on to a new organoclay: montmorillonite modified with HDTMA microemulsion

A new organoclay, consisting of montmorillonite modified by a hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium (HDTMA) microemulsion, was synthesized, characterized and used as an adsorbent for the removal of o-nitrobenzoic acid from aqueous solution. Adsorption kinetics, isotherms and effects of operating variables, such as adsorbent dosage, ionic strength and initial solution pH, were also investigated. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and BET surface area determination indicated that HDTMA molecules had entered into the interlayer of the montmorillonite. The optimized experimental conditions for the adsorption of o-nitrobenzoic acid by montmorillonite modified by HDTMA microemulsion were 0.5 g adsorbent dosage, 0.4 mL of 0.1 mol lbL(-1) CaCl2 solution, initial solution pH of 6.0 and contact time of 6 h. The adsorption isotherms of o-nitrobenzoic acid fitted the Langmuir model well (R2 = 0.9880). The adsorption kinetics data fitted the pseudo-second-order equation (R2 = 0.9999). These above results indicate that montmorillonite modified by an HDTMA microemulsion can be used as adsorbent for o-nitrobenzoic acid because of its high adsorption capacity and low cost.

Bioavailability and detoxification of cationics: I. Algal toxicity of alkyltrimethyl ammonium salts in the presence of suspended sediment and humic acid

We investigated the role of sorption in reducing bioavailability and consequently the measured toxicity of monoalkyl trimethyl ammonium salts (MAQ) under environmental conditions. The observed toxicity of MAQ in the presence of various types of sorbents was tested on algae. Decreased toxicity was found in the presence of all particulate sorbents tested, i.e. montmorillonite, silica, different sediments and for dissolved humic acid. Silica had a minor effect on the observed toxicity, whereas the clay mineral montmorillonite detoxified very effectively. The detoxification by several real-world sediments being mixtures of sand and clay was in-between silica and montmorillonite. Humic acid detoxified most effectively on weight basis. Polynomial relationships ('QSARs') were established for algal toxicity of MAQ in the presence of montmorillonite, silica and humic acid with carbon chain length as descriptor. Freundlich sorption isotherms for MAQ C16 for a clay sediment, montmorillonite, silica and for algae confirmed their relative detoxification in toxicity tests. Humic acid significantly reduced bioavailability and observed toxicity of quaternary ammonium salts. Sorption of positively charged amines to suspended sediment is effectively controlled by its silt/clay fraction, not by the organic fraction. Purchased defined quality montmorillonite can serve as model sorbent in standard tests mimicking the clay fraction of natural suspended matter. It enables to study the effect of bioavailability on toxicity in a standardised way. The QSARs developed for ecotoxicity of MAQ in the presence of suspended matter and humic acid enable quantitative incorporation of bioavailability in effect assessment. This increases realism in risk assessments of these fatty amine derivatives.

Influence of ionic surfactants on the flocculation and sorption of palladium and mercury in the aquatic environment

The influence of sub-micellar concentrations of an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulphate; SDS) and a cationic surfactant (hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide; HDTMA) on the aquatic behaviour of the strongly complexing metals, Pd(II) and Hg(II), has been investigated. In river water, flocculation of organic complexes of metal was suppressed by SDS but accentuated by HDTMA, effects that are consistent with electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between ionic surfactants and natural polyelectrolytes. In sea water, flocculation of metal complexes was enhanced by both surfactants because of the shielding and salting effects of inorganic ions on these interactions. Particle surface modification engendered by sorbed surfactant strongly influenced the sorption of Pd and Hg to estuarine particles. Thus, hydrophobically bound SDS enhances the negative charge at the particle surface and favours specific sorption of metal, while specifically sorbed HDTMA enhances the solvency of the particle surface, favouring non-specific sorption of metal complexes. Given the relatively short environmental half-life of SDS, its impacts on strongly complexing metals are predicted to be localised. However, greater stability of HDTMA suggests that its effects on such metals, including enhanced flocculation and sorption, are likely to be more pervasive.

Chemical and biological regeneration of HDTMA-modified montmorillonite after sorption with phenol

Hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA)-modified montmorillonite (HMM) has recently been recognized as a potential sorbentto remove organic contaminants from environmental systems. Potential applications of this material highly depend on the efficiency of regenerating contaminant-sorbing HMM. In this study, we investigated a chemical (NaOH solution) and a biological (yeast Pityrosporum sp.) method to regenerate phenol-sorbing HMM. Our results showed that the sorption coefficient of phenol to HMM is not a linear function of the ratio of the substitution of HDTMA in HMM. Chemical regeneration of HMMs (0-0.7 times of its cation exchange capacity (CEC)) proved the existence of a phenol residual amount of about 3 mg x g(-1) in the HMMs tested when aqueous pH is maintained above 11. In addition, the obvious deductions in the sorption capacity of the chemically regenerated HMMs were observed after four cycles of sorption-regeneration. However, the sorption capacities of intermediate substituted HMMs (0.3-0.7 CEC) can be completely restored by bioregeneration with yeast for extended cycles of reuse. The results imply that the bioregeneration method with yeast could be a promising technique for in-situ bioremediation of phenol-contaminated groundwater in the subsurface or for treatment of phenol containing wastewater.
