The Genetic Architecture of House Fly Mating Behavior

Genetic control of courtship behavior in the housefly: evidence for a conserved bifurcation of the sex-determining pathway

In Drosophila melanogaster, genes of the sex-determination hierarchy orchestrate the development and differentiation of sex-specific tissues, establishing sex-specific physiology and neural circuitry. One of these sex-determination genes, fruitless (fru), plays a key role in the formation of neural circuits underlying Drosophila male courtship behavior. Conservation of fru gene structure and sex-specific expression has been found in several insect orders, though it is still to be determined whether a male courtship role for the gene is employed in these species due to the lack of mutants and homologous experimental evidence. We have isolated the fru ortholog (Md-fru) from the common housefly, Musca domestica, and show the gene's conserved genomic structure. We demonstrate that male-specific Md-fru transcripts arise by conserved mechanisms of sex-specific splicing. Here we show that Md-fru, is similarly involved in controlling male courtship behavior. A male courtship behavioral function for Md-fru was revealed by the behavioral and neuroanatomical analyses of a hypomorphic allele, Md-tra(man) , which specifically disrupted the expression of Md-fru in males, leading to severely impaired male courtship behavior. In line with a role in nervous system development, we found that expression of Md-fru was confined to neural tissues in the brain, most prominently in optic neuropil and in peripheral sensory organs. We propose that, like in Drosophila, overt sexual differentiation of the housefly depends on a sex-determining pathway that bifurcates downstream of the Md-tra gene to coordinate dimorphic development of non-neuronal tissues mediated by Md-dsx with that of neuronal tissues largely mediated by Md-fru.

Pheromonal communication involved in courtship behavior in Diptera

Sex pheromones are known for many dipteran species and play an important role in courtship behavior, together with visual, tactile, acoustic and other factors. Pheromones for a number of dipterans have been recently identified. This survey covers a number of species in all the families that have been studied. The review discusses diverse courtship behaviors in Diptera, with a special focus on the sex pheromones involved. In the Nematocera suborder, pheromones are volatile components, which act at a distance. They are derived from short-chain alkanes with acetoxy groups (Cecidomyidae) or terpenes (Psychodidae). In the Cyclorrhapha, pheromones may be volatile, derived from alkanes (Tephritidae) or terpenes (Agromyzidae), or non-volatile, unsaturated or methyl-branched hydrocarbons, which act by contact (the other subgenera). The behavioral roles and regulation of these pheromones are described, and their importance in species recognition is discussed.

Nonadditive effects of group membership can lead to additive group phenotypes for anti-predator behaviour of guppies, Poecilia reticulata

Nonadditive effects of group membership are generated when individuals respond differently to the same social environment and may alter predictions about how behavioural evolution will occur. Despite this importance, the relationship between an individual's behaviour in two different social contexts and how reciprocal interactions among individuals within groups influence group behaviour are poorly understood. Guppy anti-predator behaviour can be used to explore how individuals behaviourally respond to changes in social context. Individuals from two strains were tested for response to a model predator alone and in groups to evaluate how individuals alter their behaviour in response to social context and how group phenotype relates to individual behaviour. Nonadditive effects of group membership were detected for a number of behaviours, revealing that the effect of being in a group differed among individuals. These nonadditive effects, however, yielded an additive group phenotype. That is, the average behaviour of the group was equal to the average of its parts, for all behaviours in both strains. Such an additive group phenotype may have resulted because all individuals within a group respond to the specific social environment provided by the other members of their group.

The quantitative genetic basis of polyandry in the parasitoid wasp, Nasonia vitripennis

Understanding the evolution of female multiple mating (polyandry) is crucial for understanding sexual selection and sexual conflict. Despite this interest, little is known about its genetic basis or whether genetics influences the evolutionary origin or maintenance of polyandry. Here, we explore the quantitative genetic basis of polyandry in the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis, a species in which female re-mating has been observed to evolve in the laboratory. We performed a quantitative genetic experiment on a recently collected population of wasps. We found low heritabilities of female polyandry (re-mating frequency after 18 h), low heritability of courtship duration and a slightly higher heritability of copulation duration. However, the coefficients of additive genetic variance for these traits were all reasonably large (CV(A)>7.0). We also found considerable dam effects for all traits after controlling for common environment, suggesting either dominance or maternal effects. Our work adds to the evidence that nonadditive genetic effects may influence the evolution of mating behaviour in Nasonia vitripennis, and the evolution of polyandry more generally.

The conversion of variance and the evolutionary potential of restricted recombination

Genetic recombination is usually considered to facilitate adaptive evolution. However, recombination prevents the reliable cotransmission of interacting gene combinations and can disrupt complexes of coadapted genes. If interactions between genes have important fitness effects, restricted recombination may lead to evolutionary responses that are different from those predicted from a purely additive model and could even aid adaptation. Theory and data have demonstrated that phenomena that limit the effectiveness of recombination via increasing homozygosity, such as inbreeding and population subdivision and bottlenecks, can temporarily increase the additive genetic variance available to these populations. This effect has been attributed to the conversion of nonadditive to additive genetic variance. Analogously, phenomena such as chromosomal inversions and apomictic parthenogenesis that physically restrict recombination in part or all of the genome may also result in a release of additive variance. Here, we review and synthesize literature concerning the evolutionary potential of populations with effectively or physically restricted recombination. Our goal is to emphasize the common theme of increased short-term access to additive genetic variance in all of these situations and to motivate research directed towards a more complete characterization of the relevance of the conversion of variance to the evolutionary process.
