Women's body odour during the ovulatory phase modulates testosterone and cortisol levels in men

A growing body of evidence suggests that men may perceive women’s bodily odour to be more attractive during the high-fertility ovulatory phase than during other phases in the menstrual cycle. In particular, women’s bodily odour may influence important aspects of male mating behaviour, but the precise nature of this phenomena remains to be elucidated. Twenty-six men and five women participated in the study. Each woman wore a cotton T-shirt during the night for 3 days during the ovulatory phase, after which the regions of the T-shirt that had been in contact with the woman’s chest, armpits, and back, were cut out of the garment. We evaluated the changes in testosterone and cortisol levels in the saliva of men who smelled these cloth pieces. The odour emitted from the backs of women in the ovulatory phase was found to increase testosterone secretion in men, whereas the odour emitted from the chests of women in the ovulatory phase reduced cortisol secretion in men. These results suggest that the odour of specific body parts of women modulate unconscious physiological reactions in men.

Clinical and therapeutic aspects of Klinefelter's syndrome: sexual function

Klinefelter's syndrome (KS) is the most common sex chromosomal aberration among men, with estimated prevalence of about 1 in 500 newborn males. The classical phenotype of KS is widely recognized, but many affected subjects present only very mild signs. While the association between KS and infertility has been well documented, few studies have investigated sexual function in the KS patients. In the present paper we reviewed studies addressed to emotional processing and sexual function in KS. We searched the following databases Medline, Pubmed, Embase, for Klinefelter's syndrome, sexuality. We focus on the peculiar contribution of genetic and hormonal background, which characterizes sexual dysfunction in KS. Abnormal structure and function of the emotional brain circuits have been described in KS. These alterations were less pronounced when the patients underwent to testosterone replacement therapy suggesting that they were mediated by testosterone deficiency. Accordingly, clinical studies indicate that sexual dysfunctions, eventually present in KS, are not specifically associated with the syndrome but are related to the underlying hypogonadism. In conclusion, androgen deficiency more than chromosomal abnormality is the major pathogenic factor of sexual dysfunction in KS.

Plasticity of pelvic autonomic ganglia and urogenital innervation

Pelvic ganglia contain a mixture of sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons and provide most of the motor innervation of the urogenital organs. They show a remarkable sensitivity to androgens and estrogens, which impacts on their development into sexually dimorphic structures and provide an array of mechanisms by which plasticity of these neurons can occur during puberty and adulthood. The structure of pelvic ganglia varies widely among species, ranging from rodents, which have a pair of large ganglia, to humans, in whom pelvic ganglion neurons are distributed in a large, complex plexus. This plexus is frequently injured during pelvic surgical procedures, yet strategies for its repair have yet to be developed. Advances in this area will come from a better understanding of the effects of injury on the cellular signaling process in pelvic neurons and also the role of neurotrophic factors during development, maintenance, and repair of these axons.
